Diabetes has become a global concern at present, among which type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)accounts for approximately 90%-95%of patients.T2DM is a type of metabolic disorder syndrome that results from a genetic defect, and it is based on insulin resistance and an insulin secretion disorder. The occurrence of T2DM is usually the outcome of both genetic and environmental factors and their interactions. The etiology and pathogenesis of diabetes have not been fully elucidated, and no radical therapeutic cure has been found.Patients with T2DM suffer from complications such as the development of a chronic hyperglycemic condition and even serious metabolic disorders and organ damage in the body and depression and dementia,in addition to other chronic complications. Many studies have suggested that diet is crucial in the development of diabetes and the control of blood glucose.Natural substances have the characteristics of low toxicity and few side effects and may be key to the development of diabetic health products and preventive treatments. This paper reviews the etiology, pathogenesis, risks, treatments and diets related to T2DM to summarize the types of recently available natural products, from both local and foreign sources, for lowering blood glucose at home and their application in supplementary hypoglycemic foods. The key findings and conclusions suggest that there are various known T2DM-inducing factors, including genetic and environmental factors and three types of hybrid factors. 展开更多

Bee venom (BV) was used from long time ago in the medical field as treatment of chronic joint affections. In the recent decades, the screening process of new sources of antimicrobials discovers its high advantageous characteristics for combating various types of microbes, as well as trials to discover its anti-cancer medicinal fields. Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) causes disease in cattle of economic importance, and this work aimed to find treatment as well as alternative inactivant for LSDV. The use of bee venom as antiviral was experimented in this work and exhibited satisfied inhibitory effects on LSDV, meanwhile, the antigenic properties was still intact. The viability of virus was tested in tissue culture cells lines and in embryonated chicken eggs. According to doses and time of exposure, the cell lines of Hep-2 (human larynx carcinoma) and MCF7 (breast carcinoma cell line) were treated with different concentrations of BV and examined after 24 h post-inoculation. The Hep-2 and MCF7 cell lines were treated with various concentrations of BV in descending doses as follow: 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 0.5 ug/mL of BV. Then bee venom pathological effects on Hep-2 cells and MCF7 cells were observed, such as apoptosis, retarded growths and cytolysis. The results indicate the possibilities of using bee venom as anti-neoplastic and antiviral. 展开更多

The aim of this study was the conversion of the ovine dermal proteins as a natural product that has an antimicrobial power which used for tissue repair and skin lesion. After dehairing, fleshings, deliming the animal tissues (ovine) and purification, the essential oils of Lavandula officinalis, Eucalyptus globules and Eugenia caryophyllata had been supplied and fixed. The product obtained is a spongy material communicating with open voids between the fibers. With a transparent light yellow color, it has a remarkable antibacterial power and a very strong inhibitory activity on all the bacterial strains tested whose average diameter of the inhibition zones exceeds 16 mm. It is also characterized by a smell which can be aromatic, pleasant and spicy or fresh and spicy depending on the essential oil used. 展开更多

Food-borne viruses and contaminants,as an important global food safety problem, are caused by chemical, microbiological, zoonotic, and other risk factors that represent a health hazard.Natural bioactive substances, originating from plants, animals,or microorganisms, might offer the possibility of preventing and controlling foodborne diseases. In this contribution, the common bioactive substances such as polyphenols, essential oils, proteins, and polysaccharides which are effective in the prevention and treatment of food-borne viruses and contaminants are discussed.Meanwhile, the preventive effects of natural bioactive substances and the possible mechanisms involved in food protection are discussed and detailed. The application and potential effects of natural bioactive substances in the adjuvant treatment for food-borne diseases is also described. 展开更多

Preventing microbial colonization or infections that cause offensive smells may lead to odor reduction. As both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria cause the release of malodor from wounds, the most direct way of avoiding or eliminating wound odor is to prevent or eradicate the responsible infection through the debridement of necrotic tissues. However, some burn patients with malodorous wounds are unable to undergo debridement due to systemic conditions, especially in the acute stage. Moreover, the optimal drug doses and dressings to ensure the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of odorous burn wound management is unclear. The purpose of this commentary is to outline the odor management options available for burn patients, focusing on topical strategies.Numerous potential therapies for treating odorous wounds after burn injuries are suggested. 展开更多

Ideally, packaging materials should ensure the safety and quality of foods, without contributing to environmental degradation.Consequently, there is interest in the development of biodegradable films assembled from natural materials, such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and their mixtures. In this review, the physicochemical attributes and functional characteristics of biodegradable films prepared from these food-grade natural substances are summarized.Recent advances in the production of active and intelligent packaging materials are also discussed.Active packaging is designed to improve the shelf life of packaged foods by including antimicrobials or antioxidants, such as essential oils.Intelligent packaging is designed to provide real-time information about the quality, freshness,or safety of packaged foods by including indicators in the film that are responsive to changes in storage conditions, gas levels,pH,etc.Potential applications of intelligent and active packaging materials to fruit, vegetable, meat, seafood, and dairy products are discussed. 展开更多
