This paper deals with the robust control problem for a class of uncertain nonlinear networked systems with stochastic communication delays via sliding mode conception (SMC). A sequence of variables obeying Bernoulli distribution are employed to model the randomly occurring communication delays which could be different for different state variables. A discrete switching function that is different from those in the existing literature is first proposed. Then, expressed as the feasibility of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) with an equality constraint, sufficient conditions are derived in order to ensure the globally mean-square asymptotic stability of the system dynamics on the sliding surface. A discrete-time SMC controller is then synthesized to guarantee the discrete-time sliding mode reaching condition with the specified sliding surface. Finally, a simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

In order to make the information transmission more efficient and reliable in a digital communication channel with limited capacity, various encoding-decoding techniques have been proposed and widely applied in many branches of the signal processing including digital communications, data compression, information encryption, etc. Recently, due to its promising application potentials in the networked systems(NSs), the analysis and synthesis issues of the NSs under various encoding-decoding schemes have stirred some research attention. However, because of the network-enhanced complexity caused by the limited network resources, it poses new challenges to the design of suitable encoding-decoding procedures to meet certain control or filtering performance for the NSs. In this survey paper, our aim is to present a comprehensive review of the encoding-decodingbased control and filtering problems for different types of NSs.First, some basic introduction with respect to the coding-decoding mechanism is presented in terms of its engineering insights, specific properties and theoretical formulations. Then, the recent representative research progress in the design of the encodingdecoding protocols for various control and filtering problems is discussed. Some possible further research topics are finally outlined for the encoding-decoding-based NSs. 展开更多

This paper considers the problem of control of networked systems via output feedback. The controller consists of two parts: a state observer that estimates plant state from the output when it is available via the communication network, and a model of the plant that is used to generate a control signal when the plant output is not available from the network. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the exponential stability of the closed loop system are derived in terms of the networked dwell time and the system parameters. The results suggest simple procedures for designing the output feedback controller proposed. Numerical simulations show the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed methods. 展开更多

With the rapid development of network technology and control technology,a networked multi-agent control system is a key direction of modern industrial control systems, such as industrial Internet systems. This paper studies the tracking control problem of networked multi-agent systems with communication constraints, where each agent has no information on the dynamics of other agents except their outputs.A networked predictive proportional integral derivative(PPID)tracking scheme is proposed to achieve the desired tracking performance, compensate actively for communication delays, and simplify implementation in a distributed manner. This scheme combines the past, present and predictive information of neighbour agents to form a tracking error signal for each agent, and applies the proportional, integral, and derivative of the agent tracking error signal to control each individual agent. The criteria of the stability and output tracking consensus of multi-agent systems with the networked PPID tracking scheme are derived through detailed analysis on the closed-loop systems. The effectiveness of the networked PPID tracking scheme is illustrated via an example. 展开更多

This paper proposes a novel event-driven encrypted control framework for linear networked control systems(NCSs),which relies on two modified uniform quantization policies, the Paillier cryptosystem, and an event-triggered strategy.Due to the fact that only integers can work in the Pailler cryptosystem, both the real-valued control gain and system state need to be first quantized before encryption. This is dramatically different from the existing quantized control methods, where only the quantization of a single value,e.g.,the control input or the system state,is considered. To handle this issue, static and dynamic quantization policies are presented, which achieve the desired integer conversions and guarantee asymptotic convergence of the quantized system state to the equilibrium. Then, the quantized system state is encrypted and sent to the controller when the triggering condition, specified by a state-based event-triggered strategy,is satisfied.By doing so,not only the security and confidentiality of data transmitted over the communication network are protected, but also the ciphertext expansion phenomenon can be relieved.Additionally,by tactfully designing the quantization sensitivities and triggering error, the proposed event-driven encrypted control framework ensures the asymptotic stability of the overall closedloop system. Finally,a simulation example of the secure motion control for an inverted pendulum cart system is presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the theoretical results. 展开更多

In this paper,we explore the relationship between dual decomposition and the consensusbased method for distributed optimisation. The relationship is developed by examining the similarities between the two approaches and their relationship to gradient-based constrained optimisation.By formulating each algorithm in continuous-time,it is seen that both approaches use a gradient method for optimisation with one using a proportional control term and the other using an integral control term to drive the system to the constraint set. Therefore,a significant contribution of this paper is to combine these methods to develop a continuous-time proportional-integral distributed optimisation method.Furthermore,we establish convergence using Lyapunov stability techniques and utilising properties from the network structure of the multi-agent system. 展开更多

In recent years, theoretical and practical research on event-based communication strategies has gained considerable research attention due primarily to their irreplaceable superiority in resource-constrained systems(especially networked systems). For networked systems, event-based transmission scheme is capable of improving the efficiency in resource utilization and prolonging the lifetime of the network components compared with the widely adopted periodic transmission scheme. As such, it would be interesting to 1) examining how the event-triggering mechanisms affect the control or filtering performance for networked systems, and 2) developing some suitable approaches for the controller and filter design problems. In this paper, a bibliographical review is presented on event-based control and filtering problems for various networked systems. First, the event-driven communication scheme is introduced in detail according to its engineering background, characteristic, and representative research frameworks. Then, different event-based control and filtering(or state estimation) problems are categorized and then discussed. Finally, we conclude the paper by outlining future research challenges for event-based networked systems. 展开更多

The guaranteed cost control problem for networked control systems (NCSs) is addressed under communication constraints and varying sampling rate. First of all, a simple information-scheduling scheme is presented to describe the scheduling approach of system signals in NCSs. Then, based on such a scheme and given sampling method, the design procedure in dynamic output feedback manner is also derived which renders the closed loop system to be asymptotically stable and guarantees an upper bound of the LQ performance cost function. 展开更多

Networked control systems are spatially distributed systems in which the communication between sensors, actuators, and controllers occurs through a shared band-limited digital communication network. Several advantages of the network architectures include reduced system wiring, plug and play devices, increased system agility, and ease of system diagnosis and maintenance. Consequently, networked control is the current trend for industrial automation and has ever-increasing applications in a wide range of areas, such as smart grids, manufacturing systems, process control, automobiles, automated highway systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The modelling, analysis, and control of networked control systems have received considerable attention in the last two decades. The ‘control over networks’ is one of the key research directions for networked control systems. This paper aims at presenting a survey of trends and techniques in networked control systems from the perspective of ‘control over networks’, providing a snapshot of five control issues: sampled-data control, quantization control, networked control, event-triggered control, and security control. Some challenging issues are suggested to direct the future research. 展开更多

Based on bounded network-induced time-delay, the networked control system is modeled as a linear time-variant singular system. Using the Lyapunov theory and the linear matrix inequality approach, the criteria for delay-independent stability and delay-dependent stability of singular networked control systems are derived and transformed to a feasibility problem of linear matrix inequality formulation, which can be solved by the Matlab LMI toolbox, and the feasible solutions provide the maximum allowable delay bound that makes the system stable. A numerical example is provided, which shows that the analysis method is valid and the stability criteria are feasible. 展开更多

This enables us to apply the rich theory of switched systems to analyzing such NCSs. Sufficient conditions are presented on the stabilization of NCSs. Stabilizing state/output feedback controllers can be constructed by using the feasible solutions of some linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The merit of our proposed approach is that the behavior of the NCSs can be studied by considering switched system without augmenting the system. Wireless Networked Control Systems (WNCS) are used to implement a control mechanism over a wireless network that is capable of carrying real-time traffic. This field has drawn enormous attention from current researchers because of its flexibility and robustness. However, designing efficient WNCS over Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) is still a challenging topic because of its less-predictable aspects, such as inconsistent delay, packet drop probability, and dynamic topology. This paper presents design guidelines for WNCS over MANET using the Network Simulator version 2, NS2 software. It investigates the impact of packet delay and packet drop under the AODV and DSR routing protocols. The simulation results have been compared to MATLAB results for validation. Feedback control systems wherein the control loops are closed through a real-time network are called networked control systems (NCS). The defining feature of an NCS is that information is exchanged using a network among control system components. Two new concepts including long time delay and short time delay are proposed. The sensor is almost always clock driven. The controller or the actuator is either clock driven or event driven. Four possible driving modes of networked control systems are presented. The open loop mathematic models of networked control systems with long time delay are developed when the system is driven by anyone of the four different modes. The uniformed modeling method of networked control systems with long time delay is proposed. The simulation results are given in the end. 展开更多

The main aspects are focused on the stability analysis of Network Control Systems (NCSs) with network-induced delays, data packet dropouts, and multiple-packet transmission. These issues must be considered in the design of an NCS. This work summarizes the main research results, and remarks on some related handling approaches and techniques. In this paper, stability and disturbance attenuation issues for a class of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) under uncertain access delay and packet dropout effects are considered. Our aim is to find conditions on the delay and packet dropout rate, under which the system stability and H∞ disturbance attenuation properties are preserved to a desired level. The basic idea in this paper is to formulate such Networked Control System as a discrete-time switched system. Then the NCSs' stability and performance problems can be reduced to the corresponding problems for switched systems, which have been studied for decades and for which a number of results are available in the literature. The techniques in this paper are based on recent progress in the discrete-time switched systems and piecewise Lyapunov functions. 展开更多
