Abstract In early 1919, people like Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu were regarded as members of an ivory-tower "academic faction" (xuepai), embroiled in a debate with an opposing "faction." After the May Fourth demonstrations, they were praised as the stars of a "New Culture Movement." However, it was not obvious how the circle around Hu Shi and Chert Duxiu was associated with the May Fourth demonstrations. This link hinged on the way in which newspapers like Shenbao reported about the academic debates and the political events of May Fourth. After compartmentalizing the debating academics into fixed xuepai, Shenbao ascribed warlord-political allegiances to them. These made the Hu-Chen circle look like government victims and their "factional" rivals like the warlords' allies. When the atmosphere became hostile to the government during May Fourth, Hu Shi's "faction" became associated with the equally victimized May Fourth demonstrators. Their ideas were regarded as (now popular) expressions of anti-government sentiment, and soon this was labeled the core of the "New Culture Movement." The idea and rhetoric of China's "New Culture Movement" in this way emerged out of the fortuitous concatenation of academic debates, newspaper stories, and political events. 展开更多

The New Standards for English issued in 2001 defined English learning as to develop "comprehensive competence in language using", which consists of language competence, language knowledge, affective aspects, learning strategy and cultural awareness. Meanwhile, as educational psychologists, De Corte et al advocate four theories in teaching and learning process, which include a theory of expertise, namely, (1) A well-organized and flexibly accessible domain specific knowledge base; (2) Heuristic methods; (3) Meta-knowledge; (4) Self-regulatory skills; (5) Beliefs. Not coincidently, the New Standards is in line with the theory of educational psychology. This gives the way to the author to argue, from the view of educational psychology, by analyzing culture awareness as being functional in meta-cognition and self-regulation aspects in expertise development, the importance of emphasizing culture awareness in English language teaching and learning. 展开更多

In 1923, Wu Ruiyan, a schoolgirl at the Beijing People's Art Drama School, starred in a play titled Hero and Beauty, written by Chert Dabei. This was the first joint performance of male and female performers in the history of Chinese drama. The incident immediately triggered a debate in the Morning Newspaper Supplement between a group of middle-class intellectuals concerning "female involvement in art performances". This paper sees the boom in female participation in politics in the 1920s, as well as the "improvement in traditional drama" during the early republican period in China as the reasons behind the discussion. This incident shows how the New Cultural Movement shaped intellectuals' views on females and art performances. 展开更多

This paper explores Mao Zedong’s early views on physical education and practice, focusing on the“Six-Section Exercise”he created. The exercise, which integrates elements from traditional health-preserving techniques, gymnastics, boxing, and military training, was designed to promote balanced physical development,be practical and effective, and require less time per session. The paper argues that Mao Zedong’s views on physical education were grounded in the belief that it could effectively transform individuals and contribute to the creation of a strong sports nation. The paper also discusses the historical context and social trends behind the creation of the“Six-Section Exercise”,including the New Culture Movement and debates between Chinese and Western, static and dynamic, and new and old approaches to physical education. The paper concludes by suggesting that Mao Zedong’s early sports thinking has significant academic value and can provide guidance for the construction of a healthy China today. 展开更多

English has not only become the international language, as it is spoken by a large number of native speakers of other languages and severs as a language of wider communication, but also has achieved a genuinely global status. Thus the spread of English provides language teachers with an abundance of data for relating second language issues to pedagogical concerns. To achieve positive pedagogical goals, it is very essential for language teachers to be aware of the status and functions of Englishes in the world today and in the future as well. To serve the purpose, this article suggests that varieties of English should be taught and special attention should be paid to teaching culture in our College English classroom so as to help our students to establish a sphere of interculturalism. 展开更多

Recent years have witnessed a phenomenon in Chinese academia, which denies the inevitable connection between May Fourth New Literature and the New Culture Movement during the May Fourth Movement period, and often views fragments of civilization before the New Culture Movement as the real form of kernel culture of New Literature. In fact, the emergence of New Literature had to depend upon the intense and profound revolutionary movement of new culture, and the May Fourth New Culture Movement fostered a totally new literary form with its combined strength, and constituted the new ideological qualities of New Literature by recourse to the values of New Culture centered on democracy and science. 展开更多

On Zhang Jingsheng's Sexual Discourse: Women's Liberation and Translated Discourses on Sexual Differences in 1920s China 被引量:1

This article explores and re-evaluates Zhang Jingsheng's views on sex education and aesthetic education, as revealed in his book Sexual Histories and in articles that he published in the journal New Culture. His endorsement of sex education and aesthetic education constructed a sexual discourse, advocating the redefinition- of Chinese men and women's gender and sexuality through knowledge/power. Zhang Jingsheng highly valued eugenics and "aesthetic sexual intercourse," and he attempted to use sex education to improve Chinese people's innate physical weakness and their "androgynous" sexual characteristics. By prescribing an aesthetic education that covered all fundamental aspects of life, he also attempted to remedy what he saw as the inadequate or inverted models of masculinity and femininity available to Chinese men and women. Furthermore, by collecting and analyzing articles solicited for Sexual Histories and letters addressed to New Culture, he discussed how to cure the sexual perversions that were associated with Chinese men and women's sexualities. Finally, this article compares the contents of New Culture with the discourses (in Chinese and other languages) on sexual difference published in other Chinese journals in the 1920s, including how the discourses on sexual difference by Havelock Ellis and Edward Carpenter were translated into the modern Chinese context. The article concludes that the contributors to New Culture held unified opinions on the issues of homosexuality and women's liberation. Thus, in comparison with journals such as The Chinese Educational Review, The Ladies 'Journal, and New Women, New Culture was less tolerant of divergent opinions. Although Zhang supported sexual liberation, he nonetheless sought to eliminate homosexuality from the aesthetic society that he envisioned. His idea of sexual liberation tended to signify women's liberation and excluded a homosexual agenda because he was homophobic. For most of the May Fourth Generation, including Zhang Jingsheng, sexual and women's liberation were not equivalent to self-liberation. Instead, the concepts of sexual liberation and women's liberation were invoked to re-code the bodies of Chinese men and women, with the aim of creating a "Strong Breed to Rescue the Nation." 展开更多
