A Comparison Between the Teacher's Role in the Task-based Language Teaching and that in the Traditional Language Teaching

This paper talks about the different teacher's role between traditional language teaching and task-based language teaching. Atthe beginning we will compare the teacher's role in terms of language theory and language teaching theory. The traditional teaching ob-jective is teaching the grammar. The teacher is the guider of the grammar. In the new English curriculum syllabus, the teaching objectiveis to train students' communicative competence. The teacher is the organizer of the teaching. In the traditional language teaching proce-dure, the teacher is authority and dictator. In the task-based approach, the teacher is equal to the students. A Reflection on a Teaching Practice

The present paper is a reflection on a teaching practice which employed second language acquisition(SLA) theories and teaching methodologies. The students taught were second-year non-English majors from X university and the course book used was New Horizon College English: Reading and Writing(3 rd edition). SLA theories involved include Input Hypothesis, Noticing Hypothesis and Comprehensible Output Hypothesis; teaching methodologies applied include Grammar-Translation Method,Communicative Language Teaching and Task Based Language Teaching(TBLT). After a semester-long teaching practice, the present reflection was completed after a deep discussion with the teacher. Students description, teaching process, and merits and demerits of this practice were illustrated.

IntroductionI have been teaching ESL in Guangzhou for over ten years,and I find the teaching of oral English a ratherdifficult task.A few years ago,I taught the course to first year English majors,using:‘50 EverydayTopics in English’as the coursebook.The topics include‘Greeting and Farewells’,‘Introduction’,‘Calling on somebody’etc.,each consisting of a few dialogues.In each lesson,there is a list of new wordsand a considerable number of pattern drills.When using the book,I conducted the class using the following procedure:1.Students study the new words before class.2.Teacher presents the dialogue and explains the language points.3.Students read aloud the dialogue after the teacher or the tape recording.4.Students practise the pattern drills or do Chinese to English translation for structural practice.5.Students repeat the dialogue in pairs or individually.6.Students act out the dialogue in class.
