The study indicates that the compressive strength and ductility of 0.05% Y(mass fraction)-containing alloy are superior to those of other alloys at the strain rate of 1.94×10 -3 s -1 over a range from room temperature to high temperature. It is also found that the microstructure of alloys is refined gradually with increasing Y content. This is reflected by more grain cells, finer spacing between Cr(Mo) fibers and smaller Cr(Mo) rods at the grain boundary. When 0.1% Y(mass fraction) and above are added to the matrix, the yttrious compounds of Y 2Ni 17 and Al 3Y form at the interfaces between NiAl and Cr(Mo) phases, which leads to the decrease of strength and ductility. Therefore, the proper addition of Y can improve the compressive strength and ductility of the alloy.展开更多

The microstructure, tensile properties as well as tensile creep of the heat-treated alloy at different temperatures were studied. The alloy was composed of NiAI, Cr(Mo) and Hf-rich phase and small amount of fine Heusler phase (Ni2AlHf). Although the present alloy exhibited high tensile strength at low temperature, it was weaker than that of system with high content Hf but still stronger than that of many NiAl-based alloys at high temperatures. The fracture toughness is lower than that of DS NiAl-28Cr-6Mo alloy. Nevertheless, advantageous effects on the mechanical properties, i.e. the decrease in brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (BDTT) were obtained for the low content of Hf. The obtained creep curves exhibit conventional shape: a short primary creep and long accelerated creep stages. The rupture properties of the heat-treated alloy follow the Monkman-Grant relationship, which exhibits similar creep behavior to that of NiAl/Cr(Mo) system with high Hf content.展开更多

Upon milling for a certain time, an abrupt exothermic reaction occurs and a large amount of NiAl and TiB2 compounds form simultaneously. It is suggested that two separate chemical reactions,i.e. Ni+Al →NiAl and Ti+2B→TiB2, are involved during the exothermic reaction. Additionof Ti and B to Ni-Al system impedes the structural evolution of Ni and Al powders and delays the abrupt reaction. The final products are equilibrium phases without any metastable phases formed. This type of reaction is suggested to be suitable for alloy systems with two large heatrelease reactions.展开更多

X-ray and Auger spectra studies indicate that Nd not only is soluble in grain interiors, but also segregates to the grain boundaries. Nd solid-solution induces an increase of the microhardness from 269 to 290 HV in grain interiors and segregation results in an enhancement of hardness from 252 to 342 HV on grain boundaries. Thus, the cohesion of grain boundaries is enhanced by Nd segregation, which make the alloy doped with 0.05 wt pct Nd exhibit more compressive microstrain, i.e. the higher the compressive ductility at room temperature, the better the final surface condition at elevated temperature. Finally, a discussion was made on the reason that Nd strengthens the grain boundaries in NiAl intermetallic alloy.展开更多

Our calculated lattice parameters and cohesive energies of Ni-A1 compounds are consistent with the experimental and the other EAM results. The results of enthalpy of formation indicate a strong chemical interaction between Ni and Al in the intermetallic compounds. Through analyzing the alloy elastic constants, we find that all the Ni-Al intermetallic compounds discussed are mechanically stable. The bulk moduli of the compounds increase with the increasing Ni concentration. Our results also suggest that NiAl, Ni3Al, NiAl3, and Ni5Al3 are ductile materials with lower ratios of shear modulus to bulk modulus; while Ni3Al4 is brittle with a higher ratio.展开更多

A continuous AlN-layer was formed at the interface due to the reaction between NiAl and BN. At the same time, Cr diffused extensively into the BN-layer and reacted with boron to form Cr boride precipitates (CrsB3). In addition, a few particles of Ta-rich phase were also precipitated in NiAl matrix near the interface.展开更多
