This paper presents an investigation of the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete(RC)structures in which shear walls are the main lateral load-resisting elements and the participation of flat slab floor systems is not considered in the seismic design procedure. In this regard, the behavior of six prototype structures(with different heights and plan layouts)is investigated through nonlinear static and time history analyses, implemented in the OpenSees platform. The results of the analyses are presented in terms of the behavior of the slab-column connections and their mode of failure at different loading stages. Moreover, the global response of the buildings is discussed in terms of some parameters, such as lateral overstrength due to the gravity flat slab-column frames.According to the nonlinear static analyses,in structures in which the slab-column connections were designed only for gravity loads, the slab-column connections exhibited a punching mode of failure even in the early stages of loading. However, the punching failure was eliminated in structures in which a minimum transverse reinforcement recommended in ACI 318(2019)was provided in the slabs at joint regions.Furthermore, despite neglecting the contribution of gravity flat slab-column frames in the lateral load resistance of the structures,a relatively significant overstrength was imposed on the structures by the gravity frames. 展开更多

A numerical method is presented for the large deflection in elastic analysis of tensegrity structures including both geometric and material nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearity is considered based on both total Lagrangian and updated Lagrangian formulations, while the material nonlinearity is treated through elastoplastic stress-strain relationship. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are solved using an incremental-iterative scheme in conjunction with the modified Newton-Raphson method.A computer program is developed to predict the mechanical responses of tensegrity systems under tensile, compressive and flexural loadings.Numerical results obtained are compared with those reported in the literature to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed program. The flexural behavior of the double layer quadruplex tensegrity grid is sufficiently good for lightweight large-span structural applications. On the other hand, its bending strength capacity is not sensitive to the self-stress level. 展开更多

A kinetics approach is developed for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of photo-induced wrinkling of glassy twist nematic films on soft elastic substrates. In this way,the problem is reduced to finding the steady state of an overdamped evolution system according to a kinetic law, rather than directly solving the coupled nonlinear equations. This enables one to account for the complicated director distribution and obtain the precise wrinkling morphology of the film.Though the approach proposed here is for a twist nematic film,it can be extended to study glassy nematic films with other director distributions. 展开更多

This article demonstrates a novel approach for material nonlinear analysis. This analysis procedure eliminates tedious and lengthy step by step incremental and then iterative procedure adopted classically and gives direct results in the linear as well as in nonlinear range of the material behavior.Use of elastic moduli is eliminated.Instead, stress and strain functions are used as the material input in the analysis procedure. These stress and strain functions are directly derived from the stress-strain behavior of the material by the method of curve fitting. This way,the whole stress-strain diagram is utilized in the analysis which naturally exposes the response of structure when loading is in nonlinear range of the material behavior. It is found that it is an excellent computational procedure adopted so far for material nonlinear analysis which gives very accurate results, easy to adopt and simple in calculations. The method eliminates all types of linearity assumptions in basic derivations of equations and hence, eliminates all types of possibility of errors in the analysis procedure as well.As it is required to know stress distribution in the structural body by proper modelling and structural idealization, the proposed analysis approach can be regarded as stress-based analysis procedure.Basic problems such as uniaxial problem, beam bending, and torsion problems are solved. It is found that approach is very suitable for solving the problems of fracture mechanics.Energy release rate for plate with center crack and double cantilever beam specimen is also evaluated. The approach solves the fracture problem with relative ease in strength of material style calculations. For all problems, results are compared with the classical displacement-based liner theory. 展开更多

The suitability of six higher order root solvers is examined for solving the nonlinear equilibrium equations in large deformation analysis of structures. The applied methods have a better convergence rate than the quadratic Newton-Raphson method. These six methods do not require higher order derivatives to achieve a higher convergence rate.Six algorithms are developed to use the higher order methods in place of the Newton-Raphson method to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equations in geometrically nonlinear analysis of structures. The higher order methods are applied to both continuum and discrete problems(spherical shell and dome truss). The computational cost and the sensitivity of the higher order solution methods and the Newton-Raphson method with respect to the load increment size are comparatively investigated. The numerical results reveal that the higher order methods require a lower number of iterations that the Newton-Raphson method to converge. It is also shown that these methods are less sensitive to the variation of the load increment size.As it is indicated in numerical results, the average residual reduces in a lower number of iterations by the application of the higher order methods in the nonlinear analysis of structures. 展开更多

The beam-wave interaction efficiency and the electron bunching process are studied. The variation of output efficiency with the length of drift tubes and output power and the variation of Ohmic loss with the length of output cavity are considered. Numerical simulations predict an optimal output efficiency of 1.8%, a power output of more than 2 kW and a gain of 33 dB after taking into account Ohmic losses when the frequency-quadrupling gyroklystron, driven by a 40-kV, 3-A electron beam and 1 Watt input power, operates at 225 CHz. 展开更多

Reinforced concrete (r.c.) framed buildings designed in compliance with inadequate seismic classifi- cations and code provisions present in many cases a high vulnerability and need to be retrofitted. To this end, the insertion of a base isolation system allows a considerable reduction of the seismic loads transmitted to the super- structure. However, strong near-fault ground motions, which are characterised by long-duration horizontal pulses, may amplify the inelastic response of the superstructure and induce a failure of the isolation system. The above considerations point out the importance of checking the effectiveness of different isolation systems for retrofitting a r.c. framed structure. For this purpose, a numerical inves- tigation is carried out with reference to a six-storey r.c. framed building, which, primarily designed (as to be a fixed-base one) in compliance with the previous Italian code (DM96) for a medium-risk seismic zone, has to be retrofitted by insertion of an isolation system at the base for attaining performance levels imposed by the current Italian code (NTC08) in a high-risk seismic zone. Besides the (fixed-base) original structure, three cases of base isolation are studied: elastomeric bearings acting alone (e.g. HDLRBs); in-parallel combination of elastomeric and friction bearings (e.g. high-damping-laminated-rubber beatings, HDLRBs and steel-PTFE sliding bearings, SBs); friction bearings acting alone (e.g. friction pendulum bearings, FPBs). The nonlinear analysis of the fixed-base and base-isolated structures subjected to horizontal com- ponents of near-fault ground motions is performed for checking plastic conditions at the potential critical (end) sections of the girders and columns as well as critical conditions of the isolation systems. Unexpected high val- ues of ductility demand are highlighted at the lower floors of all base-isolated structures, while re-centring problems of the base isolation systems under near-fault earthquakes are expected in case of friction beatings acting alone (i.e. FPBs) or that in combination (i.e. SBs) with HDLRBs. 展开更多

In contemporary society, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and achieving sustainable development are paramount goals. One effective approach is to preserve existing RC (Reinforced Concrete) buildings rather than demolishing them for new construction. However, a significant challenge arises from the lack of elevator designs in many of these existing RC buildings. Adding an external elevator becomes crucial to solving accessibility issues, enhancing property value, and satisfying modern residential buildings using convenient requirements. However, the structural performance of external elevator wells remains understudied. This research is designed by the actual external elevator project into existing RC buildings in Jinzhong Rd, Shanghai City. Specifically, this research examines five different external elevator wells under nonlinear pushover analysis, each varying in the height of the RC (Reinforced Concrete) footing. By analyzing plastic hinge states, performance points, capacity curves, spectrum curves, layer displacement, and drift ratio, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these structures of the external elevator well respond to seismic events. The findings are expected to serve as a valuable reference for future external elevator projects, ensuring the external elevator designs meet the seismic requirements. By emphasizing seismic resistance in the design phase, the research aims to enhance the overall safety and longevity of external elevator systems integrated into existing RC buildings. 展开更多

The current theory in NF EN 1995-1-1/NA of Eurocode 5, which is based on maximum deflection, has been investigated on softwoods. Therefore, this theory is not adapted for slender glulam beam columns made of tropical hardwood species from the Congo Basin. This maximum deflection is caused by a set of loads applied to the structure. However, Eurocode 5 doesn’t provide how to predict this deflection in case of long-term load for such structures. This can be done by studying load-displacement (P-Δ) behaviour of these structures while taking into account second order effects. To reach this goal, a nonlinear analysis has been performed on a three-dimensional beam column embedded on both ends. Since conducting experimental investigations on large span structural products is time-consuming and expensive especially in developing countries, a numerical model has been implemented using the Newton-Raphson method to predict load-displacement (P-Δ) curve on a slender glulam beam column made of tropical hardwood species. On one hand, the beam has been analyzed without wood connection. On the other hand, the beam has been analyzed with a bolted wood connection and a slotted-in steel plate. The load cases considered include self-weight and a uniformly applied long-term load. Combinations of serviceability limit states (SLS) and ultimate limit states (ULS) have also been considered, among other factors. A finite-element software RFEM 5 has been used to implement the model. The results showed that the use of steel can reduce displacement by 20.96%. Additionally, compared to the maximum deflection provided by Eurocode 5 for softwoods, hardwoods can exhibit an increasing rate of 85.63%. By harnessing the plastic resistance of steel, the bending resistance of wood can be increased by 32.94%. 展开更多

Due to the importance of vibration effects on the functional accuracy of mechanical systems, this research aims to develop a precise model of a nonlinearly vibrating single-link mobile flexible manipulator. The manipulator consists of an elastic arm,a rotary motor, and a rigid carrier, and undergoes general in-plane rigid body motion along with elastic transverse deformation. To accurately model the elastic behavior,Timoshenko’s beam theory is used to describe the flexible arm, which accounts for rotary inertia and shear deformation effects.By applying Newton’s second law,the nonlinear governing equations of motion for the manipulator are derived as a coupled system of ordinary differential equations(ODEs)and partial differential equations(PDEs).Then, the assumed mode method(AMM)is used to solve this nonlinear system of governing equations with appropriate shape functions. The assumed modes can be obtained after solving the characteristic equation of a Timoshenko beam with clamped boundary conditions at one end and an attached mass/inertia at the other. In addition, the effect of the transverse vibration of the inextensible arm on its axial behavior is investigated.Despite the axial rigidity, the effect makes the rigid body dynamics invalid for the axial behavior of the arm. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed model, and the results are compared with those obtained by the finite element approach. The comparison confirms the validity of the proposed dynamic model for the system.According to the mentioned features, this model can be reliable for investigating the system’s vibrational behavior and implementing vibration control algorithms. 展开更多

To provide appropriate uses of nonlinear ground response analysis for engineering practice, a three-dimensional soil column with a distributed mass system and a time domain numerical analysis were implemented on the Open Sees simulation platform. The standard mesh of a three-dimensional soil column was suggested to be satisfied with the specified maximum frequency. The layered soil column was divided into multiple sub-soils with a different viscous damping matrix according to the shear velocities as the soil properties were significantly different. It was necessary to use a combination of other one-dimensional or three-dimensional nonlinear seismic ground analysis programs to confirm the applicability of nonlinear seismic ground motion response analysis procedures in soft soil or for strong earthquakes. The accuracy of the three-dimensional soil column finite element method was verified by dynamic centrifuge model testing under different peak accelerations of the earthquake. As a result, nonlinear seismic ground motion response analysis procedures were improved in this study. The accuracy and efficiency of the three-dimensional seismic ground response analysis can be adapted to the requirements of engineering practice. 展开更多

Based on the nonlinear constitutive equation,a piezoelectric semiconductor(PSC)fiber under axial loads and Ohmic contact boundary conditions is investigated. The analytical solutions of electromechanical fields are derived by the homotopy analysis method(HAM),indicating that the HAM is efficient for the nonlinear analysis of PSC fibers, along with a rapid rate of convergence.Furthermore, the nonlinear characteristics of electromechanical fields are discussed through numerical results. It is shown that the asymmetrical distribution of electromechanical fields is obvious under a symmetrical load, and the piezoelectric effect is weakened by an applied electric field. With the increase in the initial carrier concentration, the electric potential decreases, and owing to the screen-ing effect of electrons, the distribution of electromechanical fields tends to be symmetrical. 展开更多

The offshore reinforced concrete structures are always subject to cyclic load, such as wave load.In this paper a new finite element analysis model is developed to analyze the stress and strain state of reinforced concrete structures including offshore concrete structures, subject to any number of the cyclic load. On the basis of the anal ysis of the experimental data, this model simplifies the number of cycles-total cyclic strain curve of concrete as three straight line segments, and it is assumed that the stress-strain curves of different cycles in each segment are the same, thus the elastoplastic analysis is only needed for the first cycle of each segment, and the stress or strain corresponding to any number of cycles can be obtained by superposition of stress or strain obtained by the above e lastoplastic analysis based on the cyclic numbers in each segment. This model spends less computer time, and can obtain the stress and strain states of the structures after any number of cycles. The endochronic-damage and ideal offshore concrete platform subject to cyclic loading are experimented and analyzed by the finite element method based on the model proposed in this paper. The results between the experiment and the finite element analysis are in good agreement, which demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the proposed model. 展开更多

Previous work examined the effect of the attached stiffness matrix terms on stability of an elastic beam undergoing prescribed large overall motion. The aim of the present work is to extend the nonlinear formulations to an elastic beam with free large overall motion. Based on initial stress method, the nonlinear coupling equations of elastic beams are obtained with free large overall motion and the attached stiffness matrix is derived by solving sub-static formulation. The angular velocity and the tip deformation of the elastic pendulum are calculated. The analytical results show that the simulation results of the present model are tabled and coincide with the one-order approximate model. Pre-tensioned high strength trusses using alloy steel bar are widely used as glass wall supporting systems because of the high degree of transparency. The breakage of glass panes in this type of system occurs occasionally, likely to be due to error in design and analysis in addition to other factors like glass impurity and stress concentration around opening in a spider system. Most design does not consider the flexibility of supports from finite stiffness of supporting steel or reinforced concrete beams. The resistance of lateral wind pressure of the system makes use of high tension force coupled with the large deflection effect, both of which are affected by many parameters not generally considered in conventional structures. In the design, one must therefore give a careful consideration on various effects, such as support settlement due to live loads and material creep, temperature change,pre-tension force, and wind pressure. It is not uncommon to see many similar glass wall systems fail in the wind load test chambers under a design wind speed. This paper presents a rigorous analysis and design of this type of structural systems used in a project in Hong Kong,China. The stability function with initial curvature is used in place of the cubic function, which is only accurate for linear analysis. The considerations and analysis techniques are believed to be of value to engineers involved in the design of the structural systems behaving nonlinearly. 展开更多

The work presented in this paper serves as numerical verification of the analytical model developed in the companion paper for nonlinear dynamic analysis of multi-base seismically isolated structures. To this end, two numerical examples have been analyzed using the computational algorithm incorporated into program 3D-BASIS-ME-MB, developed on the basis of the newly-formulated analytical model. The first example concerns a seven-story model structure that was tested on the earthquake simulator at the University at Buflhlo and was also used as a verification example for program SAP2000. The second example concerns a two-tower, multi-story structure with a split-level seismic-isolation system. For purposes of verification, key results produced by 3D-BASIS-ME-MB are compared to experimental results, or results obtained from other structural/finite element programs. In both examples, the analyzed structure is excited under conditions of bearing uplift, thus yielding a case of much interest in verifying the capabilities of the developed analysis tool. 展开更多
