Make Full Use of Nonverbal Codes in Teaching ESP Students

Based on Larry A. Samovar’s theory and combined with my own teaching practice, this essay mainly analyzes four nonverbal codes: body behavior, silence, seating and personal space in teaching ESP students. Meanwhile, it also provides suggestions on how to make full use of them so as to direct, stimulate and encourage students in classroom activities.

A Study on the Effects of English Teachers' Nonverbal Behavior on the Classroom Teaching in Higher Vocational College

The two main communications between the teacher and students in the classroom teaching are teachers' verbal and nonverbal behavior. The teachers teach students knowledge in words and convey a large amount of information using nonverbal behavior. These nonverbal behavior exert a subtle influence on the students, thus affect the classroom teaching. The English teachers' classroom nonverbal behavior in a higher vocational college in Gansu province was investigated through questionnaires. The results indicate that the teachers' behaviors affect the different aspects of students and then influence the effectiveness of teaching on English classroom teaching in higher vocational college.

Application of Nonverbal Language in Foreign Language Teaching and Testing

Communication is a combination of both verbal language and nonverbal language. Verbal language varies in different cultures, so does nonverbal language. Nowadays more and more teachers have realized the necessity for students to speak the foreign language in class. However, there are still some problems in teaching, studying and testing foreign language, which will be dealt with in this paper. Some teachers speak foreign language with Chinese body language. Thus students, while talking in class,also use Chinese body language to indicate their thoughts. How can't misunderstanding occur when they communicate with native speakers of foreign language? So body language should be set as one of the contents of foreign language teaching. Therefore,body language and courtesies should play an important role in tests.

The Application of Nonverbal Communication in Classroom Teaching

Nonverbal communication plays a vital role not only in intercultural communication,but also in classroom teaching.Using nonverbal communication exactly and compatibly in class can enrich information for the students and improve their learn ing interests.Also it will help to promote the communication between teachers and students,thus to creat good classroom teach ing atmosphere and optimize the teaching effects。There are practical benefits for teachers to apply the nonverbal communica tion in classroom teaching.

Nonverbal Behavior as an Educational Symbolic Mediator in Class

Effective language strategies play an essential role in traditional teaching.However,the benefits of nonverbal behavior teaching strategy in the classroom have been underestimated.Facial expressions,gestures,and eye contact are all instantaneous nonverbal behaviors that play a significant part in exchanging information in classroom.This study aims to examine how different nonverbal teaching strategies affect teaching and learning and discover what it is used for and how important they are in education.Finally,some suggestions for improving teachers’use of nonverbal behaviors from a teacher professional development perspective are presented.

Understanding Nonverbal Communication Cues of Human Personality Traits in Human-Robot Interaction

With the increasing presence of robots in our daily life,there is a strong need and demand for the strategies to acquire a high quality interaction between robots and users by enabling robots to understand users’mood,intention,and other aspects.During human-human interaction,personality traits have an important influence on human behavior,decision,mood,and many others.Therefore,we propose an efficient computational framework to endow the robot with the capability of understanding the user’s personality traits based on the user’s nonverbal communication cues represented by three visual features including the head motion,gaze,and body motion energy,and three vocal features including voice pitch,voice energy,and mel-frequency cepstral coefficient(MFCC).We used the Pepper robot in this study as a communication robot to interact with each participant by asking questions,and meanwhile,the robot extracts the nonverbal features from each participant’s habitual behavior using its on-board sensors.On the other hand,each participant’s personality traits are evaluated with a questionnaire.We then train the ridge regression and linear support vector machine(SVM)classifiers using the nonverbal features and personality trait labels from a questionnaire and evaluate the performance of the classifiers.We have verified the validity of the proposed models that showed promising binary classification performance on recognizing each of the Big Five personality traits of the participants based on individual differences in nonverbal communication cues.

Intercultural Nonverbal Communication and Foreign Language Teaching

Nonverbal communication, which is often consciously or unconsciously neglected in foreign language teaching, is an inseparable part in human communication process. This paper will give a brief account of nonverbal communication and an analysis of the significance in improving the students’ nonverbal communicative ability in FLT. It will also provide some workable suggestions to the students on enriching their cultural knowledge of nonverbal communication so as to improve their nonverbal communicative competence in ELT.

Nonverbal Communication and Emojis Usage in Arabic Tweets: A Cross-Cultural Study

People spend most of their time communicating their thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and emotions on social media platforms like Twitter, however, an important mode of communication as the nonverbal component which requires visual and audible cues is not allowed due to the nature of these text-based platforms. The aim of this research is to discover the alternative ways Arabs use across different dialects to compensate for the absence of the nonverbal component. To be able to discover that the researchers collected a corpus of tweets written in the Arabic language by using python through the Twitter application programming interface (API). The results can be summed up as follows: emojis helped Arabs to communicate their facial expressions and the top used emoji across the different dialects was Face with Tears of Joy, it was also apparent that the top used emojis reflected the universal emotions, regarding the usage of hand gestures, Egyptian dialect came in the first place and Emirati dialect in the second place. Prosodic features such as the tone and loudness of the voice are expressed by the mean of character repetition, Punctuation usage across the Arabic dialects was limited, and Lebanese seemed to use them the most, Arabs tend to replace punctuation marks with emojis, finally, Arabs used vocal expressions like Interjections to communicate their affective state.

A Study on Pragmatic Failures in Nonverbal Communication in Intercultural Communicative Context

In the intercultural communication, people often ignore the nonverbal behavior when they talk to others. With the raid progress of modern traffic and tools of communication, people’s contacts have become increasingly frequent with different regions and countries. The research on pragmatic failures in nonverbal communication allows people to understand its nature and eliminate some unnecessary misunderstanding. This paper aims at finding out the root causes about pragmatic failures in nonverbal communication in the intercultural communication, and providing several sensible recommendations.

Nonverbal Communication in College English Teaching

This thesis mainly focuses on the significance of nonverbal communication in college English teaching. An Analysis of Nonverbal Codes in Desert Flower

With the process of globalization,more intercultural encounters are raising with the exchange of ideas,values,worldviews etc.To understand better of how each elements functions in the course of the intercultural communication,this paper explores the film Desert Flower from nonverbal codes.On the basis of discussion and analysis in the paper,it can be concluded that nonverbal codes play a significant role in intercultural relations,which molds the extraordinary life of Waris Dirie.Although the observations are grounded on the scenes of an artificial film,those intercultural encounters do exist.Strategies adopted in the film to cope with communication issues could be applied to the intercultural settings in real life.

Assessment criteria for nonverbal interaction contents in r-learning

r-learning,which is based on e-learning and u-learning,is defined as a learning support system that intelligent robots serve verbal and nonverbal interactions on ubiquitous computing environment.In order to guarantee the advantages of r-learning contents with no limits of timc and place and with nonverbal interaction which are not in e-learning contents,in recent years,assessment criteria for r-learning contents are urgently rcquired.Therefore,the reliable and valid assessment criteria were developed for nonverbal interaction contents in r-learning,and its detailed research content is as follows.First,assessment criteria for nonverbal interaction in r-learning contents will be specified into gesture,facial expression,semi-verbal message,distance,physical contact and time.Second,the validity of the developed assessment criteria will be proved by statistics.Consequently,the assessment criteria for nonverbal interaction contents will be helpful when choosing the better r-learning content and producing the better r-learning content,and the reliability of school education is improved ultimately.

Salivary Alpha-Amylase Reactivity under Psycho-Physiological Stress. A Nonverbal Communication Measurement Tool?

Previous studies have shown that changes in salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) levels are dependent on psychosocial stress stimulation and reflect the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. sAA measurement can be performed easily and quickly;therefore, it may be useful for evaluating psychosocial or physical stress. The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the use of sAA measurements as objective indicators of psychological and physiological stress levels by examining sAA changes in volunteers subjected to conditions similar to those suffered by children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities and cerebral paralysis. Twelve healthy volunteers were required to not move or speak, as is found in patients suffering from total paralysis, for 30 min. Saliva samples were taken at three points, and sAA activity was measured using a hand-held monitor before the test, immediately after the test, and 10 min after the test. In the present study, a marked increase in sAA activity due to physiological stress and a rapid return to the baseline level were observed. Many subjects felt bodily pain and psychotic discomfort. This measurement method is useful for evaluating stress in children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities, who can not fully express their emotions or communicate with their caregivers.

Improving college non-English majors＇ nonverbal communication competence

Under the widespread view that verbal competence is essential in foreign language acquisition. nonverbal communication has not been given sufficient attention and importance in foreign language teaching in China. In most cases in intercultural interaction, people focus on verbal cues while neglecting those nonverbal messages produced by the bodies and the environment. Such neglect often results in misunderstandings and conflicts because nonverbal communication reveals basic cultural traits from which people are able to gather clues about underlying attitudes and values. Grounded on the model of cultural learning put forward by Hanvey, the study puts forward a set of feasible suggestions on how to improve intercultural nonverbal communication competence of college non-English majors.
