Introduction Life research serves as the vanguard of scientific exploration,where the intricate symphony of living organisms unfolds,unraveling the mysteries of existence.Encompassing biology,genetics,ecology,and beyond,it weaves a narrative delving into life’s essence,propelling us toward a profound comprehension of our world.In the relentless pursuit of knowledge,life researchers decode fundamental processes,from unraveling DNA’s secrets to probing the delicate balances of ecosystems.The hallmark of contemporary life research lies in its interdisciplinary character,fostering collaboration among biologists,chemists,physicists,and computational scientists.This collaborative synergy embraces a holistic approach,enabling researchers to address intricate biological questions,spur innovation,and redefine the limits of what was once deemed possible.

Full ranking procedure based on best and worst frontiers

In the traditional data envelopment analysis （DEA） structure, the efficiency score for one decision making unit （DMU） is calculated by measuring the distance of the evaluated DMU to the best practice frontier. Recent researches have provided the reasonability of considering the worst practice frontier as a supple- ment to the traditional DEA techniques. The existing researches take only one type of frontier into account, and they cannot com- pare the evaluated DMU with both the best and the worst perform- ing DMUs. A DEA-based procedure is developed to consider the best and the worst frontiers in the same scenario where the ratio of two distances （RDS） measure is proposed. The principal appli- cation of this approach is for ranking, and, as a complement tool, for performance evaluation. The proposed approach can be used in a wide range of applications such as the performance evaluation of employees and others. Finally, a bookstore data set is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

Geoscience Frontiers Best Paper Award

GEOSCIENCE FRONTIERS （GSF） has instituted an Award （GSF Best Paper Award） to the author（s） of the paper judged to be the best published each year from 2012 onwards. The objective of this recognition is to encourage high quality studies on the frontier fields of Earth Sciences. Only articles that contain original research data and/or models are eligible for the Award, and can include arti- cles published under the categories of ＂FOCUS＂ and ＂RESEARCH PAPERS＂. The Award Committee comprising of members nomi- nated from the Editorial Board/Council of GEOSCIENCE FRONTIERS, shall be responsible for assessing the papers published during each year, and for selecting the winning paper.

Frontiers in early Earth history and primordial life--PartⅠ

The history of the early Earth is shrouded in mystery, and one of the major outcomes of the Apollo Program, lunar sampling, and the data acquired by subsequent orbiting missions, is that the Moon is an important analogue for the Hadean Earth, which includes primordial planet-forming materials. We assemble two special issues of ＂Geoscience Frontiers＂ with state-of-the-art contributions that provide insights into planetary formation, Earth＇s early history and primordial life. New theories show why the Earth began as a dry planetary system and was later seeded by an ocean-atmosphere system through the bombardment of carbonaceous chondrites. A combination of the information concerning the evolution of Earth, Mars, and the other terrestrial planets is important in understanding the fate of the primordial continental crustal materials and the making of habitable planets.

Global Governance of New Frontiers： China＇s Perspective

The new frontiers for global governance serve as a new stage for international competition and cooperation. By playing a successful role in the governance of these new frontiers, China can facilitate the establishing of a community of shared future for all mankind.

The Nanjing International Symposium of New Frontiers in Cancer Research(Nov 9-10,2007)

The Nanjing International Symposium of New Frontiers in Cancer Research will be held on Nov 9-10, 2007. The purpose of this symposium is to stimulate a dialogue among basic and clinical cancer researchers between China and other countries to speed up translation of new findings in basic cancer biology into disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We hope to use this conference as a forum to create a unique opportunity for exchange in current discoveries, fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, and identification of future opportunities in cancer treatment and patient care. There will be four sessions in this symposium：

A bibliometric analysis of core articles ofinternational nursing research frontiersbased on the Web of Science database

Objective:To review and analyze the basic information and distribution of core articles in the global research frontier of nursing,so as to ascertain the current trend in the field.Methods:A total of 37 highly cited essential science indicator(ESI)papers in the nursing discipline were retrieved,which were compared with the core article collection of the ESI research frontier in January 2019 to understand the current nursing research frontiers.Subsequently,a statistical analysis of the core articles that constituted the nursing research frontiers was performed using a bibliometric method.The analysis was conducted with multiple aspects including the number of core articles,total number of citations,average publication year,issuing country,participating institution,citing paper,journal distribution,and core researcher.Results:At present,the two international research frontiers of nursing are patient-centered care(Research Frontier 1)and missed care(Research Frontier 2).These two frontiers include a total of 12 core articles,6 of which are highly cited Web of Scienceindexed nursing papers.Research Frontier 1 includes three core articles that were cited 389 times.Research Frontier 2 includes nine core articles that were cited 841 times.Articles in the two frontiers were cited by 454 and 841 papers,respectively,most of which are in the United States.In addition,the 12 core articles were published across eight journals,the impact factors of which are all relatively high.Lastly,Research Frontier 1 involves 11 authors,whereas Research Frontier 2 involves 49 authors,of which seven authors have published more than two articles.Conclusions:The core articles in the frontier of international nursing research demonstrate distinctive features in their issuing country/region,journal distribution,and participating institution.Review and analysis of the core articles of international nursing research frontiers can help nursing staff understand the current research hotspots and consequently perform corresponding scientific research to promote the development of the nursing discipline.

Editorial for special issue on frontiers and advances in cemented paste backfill

As an important guarantee for human survival and development,the increasing use of mineral resources has led to the generation of a large amount of tailings and slags.However,with the deep promotion of green concepts such as solid waste resource utilization and sustainable development,adding additives to tailings as filling materials can not only improve resource utilization efficiency and prevent surface collapse,but also reduce solid waste discharge to the surface,which is an effective way to fully utilize tailings resources and achieve land and energy saving,environmental protection,and waste utilization.

Geoscience Frontiers 2017 Annual Convention

The 2017 Geoscience Frontiers Annual Convention was held in Beijing, China during October 19e21, 2017 hosted by China University of Geosciences, Beijing (Fig. 1). This convention assembled earth scientists from seven countries, including Australia (Dr. Christopher Spencer and Dr. Stijn Glorie), Korea (Dr. S. Kwon), India (Dr. Shaji Erath), Japan (Dr. Toshiaki Tsunogae and Dr. Masaki Yoshida), Russia (Dr. Inna Safonova), UK (Dr. Nick Roberts), China, and also representatives from Elsevier (Beijing).

Preface to special issue on frontiers of chemical engineering thermodynamics
