Earthquake-induced strong near-fault ground motion is typically accompanied by largevelocity pulse-like component, which causes serious damage to slopes and buildings.Although not all near-fault ground motions contain a pulse-like component,it is important to consider this factor in regional earthquake-induced landslide susceptibility assessment. In the present study,we considered the probability of the observed pulse-like ground motion at each site(PP)in the region of an earthquake as one of the conditioning factors for landslide susceptibility assessment.A subset of the area affected by the 1994Mw6.7 Northridge earthquake in California was examined. To explore and verify the effects of PP on landslide susceptibility assessment, seven models were established, consisting of six identical influencing factors(elevation, slope gradient, aspect, distance to drainage, distance to roads, and geology)and one or two factors characterizing the intensity of the earthquake(distance to fault, peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, and PP)in logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the model considering PP performed better in susceptibility assessment, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value of 0.956.Based on the results of relative importance analysis, the contribution of the PP value to earthquakeinduced landslide susceptibility was ranked fourth after the slope gradient, elevation, and lithology. The prediction performance of the model considering the pulse-like effect was better than that reported previously.A logistic regression model that considers the pulse-like effect can be applied in disaster prevention, mitigation, and construction planning in near-fault areas. 展开更多

A comparative study of selected bridge damage due to the Wenchuan, Northridge, Loma Prieta and San Fernando earthquakes is described in this paper. Typical ground motion effects considered include large ground fault displacement, liquefaction, landslide, and strong ground shaking. Issues related to falling spans, inadequate detailing for structural ductility and complex bridge configurations are discussed within the context of the recent seismic design codes of China and the US. A significant lesson learned from the Great Wenchuan earthquake, far beyond the opportunities to improve the seismic design provisions for bridges, is articulated. 展开更多

The objective of this research is to determine the effect earthquakes have on the performance of transportation network systems. To do this, bridge fragility curves, expressed as a function of peak ground acceleration(PGA)and peak ground velocity(PGV),were developed.Network damage was evaluated under the 1994 Northridge earthquake and scenario earthquakes.A probabilistic model was developed to determine the effect of repair of bridge damage on the improvement of the network performance as days passed after the event. As an example, the system performance degradation measured in terms of an index,'Drivers Delay,'is calculated for the Los Angeles area transportation system, and losses due to Drivers Delay with and without retrofit were estimated. 展开更多

The objective of this study is to identify system parameters from the recorded response of base isolated buildings, such as USC hospital building, during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.Full state measurements are not available for identification.Additionally, the response is nonlinear due to the yielding of the lead-rubber bearings. Two new approaches are presented in this paper to solve the aforementioned problems.First,a reduced order observer is used to estimate the unmeasured states.Second,a least squares technique with time segments is developed to identify the piece-wise linear system properties. The observer is used to estimate the initial conditions needed for the time segmented identification.A series of equivalent linear system parameters are identified in different time segments. It is shown that the change in system parameters, such as frequencies and damping ratios, due to nonlinear behavior of the lead-rubber bearings, are reliably estimated using the presented technique. It is shown that the response was reduced due to yielding of the lead-rubber bearings and period lengthening. 展开更多

In response to the challenge inherent in classical high-dimensional models of random ground motions, a family of simulation methods for nonstationary seismic ground motions was developed previously through employing a wave-group propagation formulation with phase spectrum model built up on the frequency components’ starting-time of phase evolution. The present paper aims at extending the formulation to the simulation of non-stationary random seismic ground motions. The ground motion records associated with N–S component of Northridge Earthquake at the type-II site are investigated. The frequency components’ starting-time of phase evolution of is identified from the ground motion records, and is proved to admit the Gamma distribution through data fitting. Numerical results indicate that the simulated random ground motion features zeromean, non-stationary, and non-Gaussian behaviors, and the phase spectrum model with only a few starting-times of phase evolution could come up with a sound contribution to the simulation. 展开更多
