These actions may degrade beach habitats and reduce biomass and invertebrate density at sites where they were employed. We conducted an eco-environmental evaluation at the Anping artificial beach-nourishment project area. At this site, sand piles within a semi-enclosed spur groin have been enforced by use of eco-engineering concepts since 2003. Four sampling sites were monitored during the study period from July 2002 to September 2008. The environmental impact assessment and biological investigations that we conducted are presented here. The results from this study indicate that both biotic (number of species, number of individual organisms, and Shannon-Wiener diversity) and abiotic parameters (suspended solids, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, total phosphorus, total organic carbon, median diameter, and water content) showed significant differences before and after beach engineering construction. Biological conditions became worse in the beginning stages of the engineering but improved after the restoration work completion. This study reveals that the composition of benthic invertebrates changed over the study period, and two groups of organisms, Bivalvia and Gastropoda, seemed to be particularly suitable to this habitat after the semi-enclosed artificial structures completion.展开更多

The evolution of the profile configuration of the artificial cobble beach in Tianquan Bay can be divided into four stages. The beach was unstable during the initial stage after the beach nourishment the profile configuration changed obviously, and an upper concave composite cobble beach formed gradually, which was character- ized by a steep upper part and a gentle lower part. In the second stage, the cobble beach approached dynamic equilibrium with minor changes in the profile configuration. At the third stage the beach was in a high-energy state under the influence of Typhoon Meranti, and the response of the artificial cobble beach differed significantly from that of the low-tide terrace sandy beach. Within a short time, there was net onshore transport of cobbles in the cross-shore direction. The beach face was eroded, the beach berm was accumulated, and the slope of the beach was steepened considerably. In the alongshore direction, there was notable transport of cobbles on the beach from east to west along the shore, and the total volume of the beach decreased by 4.5×103 m 3, which accounted for 50% of the total amount of beach volume lost within three years. The fourth stage was the restoration stage after the typhoon, characterized by a little gentler profile slope and the increase in width and the decrease in height of beach berm. Because of the action of waves and the wave-driven longshore current caused by the specific terrain and landform conditions along the coast (e.g., coastal headlands, near-shore artificial structures, and reefs), the coastline of the artificial cobble beach gradually evolved from being essentially parallel to the artificial coast upon completion to a slightly curved parabolic shape, and three distinct erosion hotspots were formed on the west side of the cape and the artificial drainpipe, and the reefs. Generally, the adoption of cobbles for beach nourishment on this macro-tidal coast beach with severe erosion has yielded excellent stability and adaptability.展开更多

Sea-level rise causes slow but constant shoreline retreats and became a more serious threat.Different types of hard solutions for coastal protection against erosion were used in Shandong.Seawalls are most widely used, especially at the Yellow River Delta and city center waterfront.Groynes, jetties and breakwater are used on the north and east sandy coast of the Peninsula.Hard approaches are effective to protect the coast erosion but not change the erosion causes and led secondary impact on the coast.Soft engineering solution or the combined solutions are taken into acts.Beach nourishment is mostly considered as the better soft solution, especially to those tourists attracting sandy beaches along the Shandong coast.Long term monitoring and continuous lessons learning from the coastal erosion management will be adaptive for better coast solution in the future.展开更多

Nourishment, health and survival are considered some of the elementary capabilities, and the concept of malnutrition, including under and over-nutrition, is discussed, based upon the comparison of data on food production and distribution from the macro level context, as well as from the family and individual levels included anthropometrical measurements. The advantages and limits of different kinds of measurements are discussed, suggesting more complex approaches, based also upon family and gender equality. The double burden of malnutrition, under and over-nourishment of children is highlighted as a public health issue to be resolved by adequate policies and considering the role of female empowerment, nutrition-knowledge and education as relevant keys to achieve equality in family food and resource distribution, healthy lifestyles and human development.展开更多

Each year approximately, 579,732 people are adversely affected by this phenomenon, putting Pakistan 9th in terms of flood-affected countries worldwide. Patients and Methods: All patients suffering from diarrhea (more than 3 stools per day for the last 2 days), abdominal pain, vomiting or fever who were residing in the camps were included in the study. After taking consent, a fresh stool sample for D/R and C/S, and 5 ml of venous blood sample for CP and ALT and other viral markers were collected from each patient suffering from any of the symptoms like jaundice, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain during past 2-3 days. Direct microscopy of the stools was done to see any protozoal or bacterial infection. Culture of stool was also set up simultaneously. Hemoglobin % age was noted for each patient. Serology of Hepatitis E and A virus using ELISA (Anti HEV-IgM, and anti HAV IgM) was done in those with more than 2 times raised ALT level. Results: A total of 500 samples collected from refugee camps of flood affected areas near Karachi were included in this study. All patients were mal nourished, having below normal Hb% ages, and were suspected cases or patients of diarrhea with elevated ALT (Alanine Transaminase) values. Occult blood was found positive in 40% (200) specimens;protozoa were also seen i.e., trophozoit stage of Giardia lamblia in 45% (225) of specimens;Entamoeba coli in 95% (475) and Balantidium coli in 20% (100) of stool specimens, while cyst forms of Entamoeba histolytica were present in 35% (175) specimens. Bacteriological analysis showed high bacterial prevalence of E. coli with 63% (315), followed by Enterobacter specie with 55% (275), then 20% (100) and 12% (60) of Klebseilla oxytoca and Klebseilla pneumoniae respectively. Proteus vulgaris and Citrobacter freundii found in the same ratio of 8% (40, 39) with 2% (10) specimens of no microbial growth. Overall <0.05 P value and 95% of confidence interval level was observed. Further serological evidences for water associated viral hepatitis revealed 4% (20) positive specimens for anti-HEV IgM antibodies, and 2.6% (13) positive specimens of anti-HAV IgM antibodies. Conclusion: The present study reveals the presence of HEV and HAV associated viral diarrhea along with the presence of protozoal and bacterial infections in the flood relief camps. It is suggested that there is a strong need of natural disaster associated awareness program for general population in order to minimize the mortality and morbidity ratio associated with diseases, which can be easily controlled by managing proper sanitary conditions and supply of safe and clear water.展开更多

It is only when these cells are classified as non-local by the normal cells that confrontation occurs, and thus cancer begins as a disease. The tumorogenic degradation of the skeletal muscle plays a highly important role in the pathomechanism of the disease. It transforms a diminishing differentiation into an increasing homeostatic disorder, and is forced to provide energy to the malignant cells. This characterizes the completed form of the pathomechanism. Blocking the pathomechanism is the goal of a therapy that can be realized on two levels: At the level of reprogramming of the gene expression, which initiates the formation of neoplastic cells, a “reprogramming” of the reprogramming of gene expression could be achieved by altering the genomic flow of information. Increased anabolism (corresponding to the nutrient surplus) as well as increased catabolism (corresponding to nutrient) could lead to respective changes of the flows of genomic information. These opposing flows in a patient could be expected to result in interference or a shearing effect. Patients with acromegaly exhibit a 9.25% increased neoplasia prevalence, whilst patients with hyperthyroidism have 8.41% increased neoplasia prevalence. Patients with acromegaly and hyperthyroidism have a lower prevalence of neoplasia of 3.30%, i.e. the chance of these patients not contracting cancer is three times greater than patients with either only acromegaly or only hyperthyroidism. At the level of tumorogenic degradation of skeletal muscle, inhibition of muscle degradation by means of hypertriglyceridemia results in a significant prolongation of the life of carcinoma patients. This is based on the fact that inhibition of muscle degradation occurs after infusion of triglyceride emulsion. In the case of S. sanguinis bacteremia, there may be an interaction between enzymes from S. sanguinis, from the digestive tract and from the tumor. The source of infection determines the inactivation of the tumor enzyme and thus suppresses tumor development.展开更多

The method implies the γ rays detection emitted by natural ^40K-^40Ar present in foodstuff, by using a 3 × 3" low background NaI (TI) scintillation detector coupled to a PC charged with the Maestro Program. When this detection system is calibrated in order to determine its efficiency for 1461 KeV γrays emitted during ^40K-^40Ar decaying, it is possible to measure easily and with enough precision the specific activity due to natural ^40K present in any foodstuff. Once this figure is divided by the constant value of ^40K specific activity of elementary K, the concentration of this element in the foodstuff sample is established. This paper describes the procedure and shows the results obtained with four basic diet products: milk (powdered, light and cream), eggs (yellow and white), wheat (whole and refined flour) and corn (whole and cornstarch flour). The possible application of this study seems to be to establish the necessary threshold to evaluate the importance of any possible radioactive contamination, as well as to measure the concentration of the mineral nutrient K in foodstuff, by means of an easy, practicable method. Also, it might be useful as an experiment for teaching purposes.展开更多

METHODS: Using stratified random sampling according to fibrinogen (Fib) levels, 145 liver cirrhosis patients due to hepatitis B complicated by coagulation disorder were treated. Of them, 70 in research group were treated with TCM by "nourishing yin, cooling blood and invigorating blood circulation" and Western medicine, 75 in control group were treated with conventional Western medicine. The indexes of liver function, coagulation function and bleeding events were observed and compared. RESULTS: The prothrombin time (PT) was shorter and the fibrinogen (Fib) level was higher in the research group than in the control group (Fib = 1.6-2.0 g/L, 1.1-1.5 g/L, and ≤ 1.0 g/L). The total bilirubin (TBIL) level was significantly lower in the research group than in the control group, except for the subgroup of FIB ≤ 1.0 g/L. CONCLUSION: TCM therapy can improve coagulation fuction and decrease TBIL.展开更多

文摘The cross-shore variation in wind speeds influenced by beach nourishment, especially the dramatic changes at the nourished berm,is important for understanding the aeolian sand transport processes that occur after beach nourishment, which will contribute to better beach nourishment project design on windy coasts. In this paper, the influencing factors and potential mechanism of wind speed variation at the edge of a nourished berm were studied.Field observations, together with the Duna model, were used to study the cross-shore wind speed distribution for different nourishment schemes. The results show that the nourished berm elevation and beachface slope are the main factors controlling the increase in wind speed at the berm edge. When the upper beach slope is constant, the wind speed at the berm edge has a positive linear correlation with the berm elevation. When the berm elevation remains constant, the wind speed at the berm edge is also proportional to the upper beach slope.Considering the coupling effects of nourished berm elevation and beachface slope,a model for predicting the wind speed amplification rate at the nourished berm edge was established, and the underlying coupling mechanism was illustrated.

文摘By tracking and monitoring the profile configuration, topography, and hydrodynamic factors of an artificial cobble beach in Tianquan Bay, Xiamen, China over three consecutive years after its completion, we analyzed the evolution of its profile configura- tion and plane morphology, and its storm response characteristics. Generally, the adoption of cobbles for beach nourishment on this macro-tidal coast beach with severe erosion has yielded excellent stability and adaptability.

文摘Shandong has more than 70% of natural coasts are under erosion.Coastal erosion started from the 1970's and became a very serious problem at 1990 's.The dramatic decrease of sediment supplies from rivers caused rapid erosion at the delta and estuary areas, especially in the abandoned Yellow River Delta. Most sandy coasts along the Peninsula were eroded due to lack of sand supply and interruption of alongshore sediment drift, sand dredging from the beach or the offshore area caused serious erosion during short time. Sea-level rise causes slow but constant shoreline retreats and became a more serious threat.Different types of hard solutions for coastal protection against erosion were used in Shandong.Seawalls are most widely used, especially at the Yellow River Delta and city center waterfront.Groynes, jetties and breakwater are used on the north and east sandy coast of the Peninsula.Hard approaches are effective to protect the coast erosion but not change the erosion causes and led secondary impact on the coast.Soft engineering solution or the combined solutions are taken into acts.Beach nourishment is mostly considered as the better soft solution, especially to those tourists attracting sandy beaches along the Shandong coast.Long term monitoring and continuous lessons learning from the coastal erosion management will be adaptive for better coast solution in the future.

文摘In this article, capacities and freedom approach, as well as lifestyles are explored taking into account child nutrition, and other relevant dimensions of human life more than just economic and other elementary resources, and also social, cultural, psychological, values and freedom dimensions. The double burden of malnutrition, under and over-nourishment of children is highlighted as a public health issue to be resolved by adequate policies and considering the role of female empowerment, nutrition-knowledge and education as relevant keys to achieve equality in family food and resource distribution, healthy lifestyles and human development.

文摘Potential sandy coast erosion and socio-economic impacts under sea level rise scenarios as well as socio-economic pathways were assessed in Liaodong Bay.Results show that sea level is projected to rise by 20-43 cm in Liaodong Bay by 2100.And dry land loss increases in all sea level rise scenarios, with the maximum loss of 32.1 km2 in 2100 under RCP8.5.Coastal erosion results in forced migration, and the forced migration is higher under SSP3 than other pathways due to its higher population growth rate, reaching the highest of 3.1×10^4 under SSP3/RCP8.5 in 2100.Moreover,the differences of forced migration among all scenarios increas after 2050,and the migration increasing rates tend to decrease under RCP2.6 and RCP4.5.The maximum economic loss due to coastal erosion will reach 8.05 billion yuan under SSP5/RCP8.5 in 2100,in which land loss cost is two order less than migration cost, and the share of total erosion-induced economic loss in local GDP varies from 1.12‰ to 4.76‰ under all scenarios, which is an important indicator to draw local government's attention to take measures such as beach nourishment, especially for tourist beaches.Optimally,it is recommended by cost-benefit analysis to carry out nourishment mainly on beaches with high value, while there is no need for nourishment in areas where erosion impacts are negligible.
文摘The present study was aimed to determine the frequency of water borne diarrheal infections and gastroenteritis in two of the flood affected camps of Karachi and nearby areas. It is suggested that there is a strong need of natural disaster associated awareness program for general population in order to minimize the mortality and morbidity ratio associated with diseases, which can be easily controlled by managing proper sanitary conditions and supply of safe and clear water.
文摘Neoplastic cells are formed as a result of reprogramming the gene expression. The source of infection determines the inactivation of the tumor enzyme and thus suppresses tumor development.
文摘The purpose of this paper is double: first to measure the natural radioactivity in any food by detecting the omnipresent radiation of ^40K, and then to use this date to obtain the concentration of the important mineral nutrient K, by dividing the specific activity of the sample (Bq/g) by the specific activity of elementary K (31.19 Bq/g). Also, it might be useful as an experiment for teaching purposes.

文摘AIM: TO observe the therapeutic effects of new traditional Chinese medicine (TClVl) therapy on coagulation disorder and accompanying intractable jaundice in HBV-related liver cirrhosis patients. CONCLUSION: TCM therapy can improve coagulation fuction and decrease TBIL.
