The contact, in different domains between English and indigenous langu...In Nigeria, almost 500 indigenous languages continue to compete with the English language that has assumed the status of a global linguistic code. The contact, in different domains between English and indigenous languages in the country continues to affect performance in English and contact languages, making effective communication in either English or any of the indigenous languages unattainable. The purpose of this study is to show that although no particular document, so named, exists expressing the nation's policy on language, nonetheless, the country has a policy on language that accommodates the indigenous languages as substrates, while the English language holds sway in various linguistic domains. Using a simple descriptive survey with data from previous studies, this paper examines the linguistic implications of the contact between English and indigenous languages on the younger generations who are losing contact with the mother tongue, and also not demonstrating enough proficiency in the English language. It is recommended that the opportunities that competence and maturation afforded a second language learner should be latched onto to gain the needed proficiency in English thus making them effective bilinguals and communicators in a world that is fast becoming a global village, and the inhabitants global citizens.展开更多

The robots are classified into DBC (Dialogue-Based Communication) robots and TBC (Touch-Based Communication) robots. DBC robots have an effect to be conversational partners. A typical application of TBC robots is Paro (a baby harp seal robot) which has an effect to entertain humans. The combination of DBC and TBC will be able to achieve both a conversational ability and an entertaining effect, but there is no study of combination of DBC and TBC. This paper proposes a response algorithm that can combine conversational information and touch information from humans. Criterions for estimation are defined as follows: FFV (Familiarity Factor Value), EFV (Enjoyment Factor Value), CR (Concentration Rate), ER (Expression Rate), and RR (Recognition Rate). FFV and EFV are total ratings for questionnaire related to familiarity and enjoyment factors, respectively. CR measures attention for humans. ER is the interest of communication with robots by representing Level 2 (laugh with opening one’s mouse), Level 1 (smile), and Level 0 (expressionless). RR is recognition ability for voices and touch actions. From the experiment for impressions of robot responses with 11 subjects, it turns out that the proposed method with combination of DBC and TBC is improved by 20.7 points in FFV, and by 12.6 points in EFV compared to only TBC. From the robot communication experiment, it turns out that the proposed method is improved by 8 points in the ER, by 5.3 points in the ER with Level 2, and by 24.5 points in the RR compared to only DBC.展开更多

Nonverbal communication may be as important to understand as words are, for it can cause misunderstandings between people from different cultures if they misinterpret nonverbal symbols. Nonverbal communication is largely beyond our conscious, and the system we learn is not determined by the genetic heritage but by the socio-cultural environment. The differences across cultures in nonverbal signals have been studied widely, because of the importance and necessity in communication .The paper mainly focuses on the differences related to body language, body space, body touch and paralanguage.
文摘Communication inevitably becomes an essential part of interaction among people in every part of the world.Foreign language course provides opportunities for those who need to improve their foreign language skills like English,French,and German.However,this course finds some obstacles to the learning process like different curriculum,teaching technique,the background of the target language,pattern,as well as its culture.This research aims to dig out the learner’s obstacles and solutions in learning European language on communication at a foreign language course in Malang Raya.As the number of participants who put their interest more in learning European language course is growing,this research applied descriptive quantitative method by taking the population from the learners of European foreign language courses with purposive sampling.Meanwhile,the instrument used was a questionnaire,and it was analyzed by using the percentage formula.The finding shows that the obstacles to learning European communication consist of linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles,whereas the solutions done are various.
文摘Culture and language are both products of hum an society. This paper concerns the close relationship betweelanguage and culture. Some social scientists consider that language is the keystone of culture. Language is a media of communicationwhich is culturally conditioned. Culture, as a significant feature of human society and the soil for language emergence as well abackground for language use, is closely knitted together with language. However, current teaching syllabus in China does noprovide a system of the specific cultural contents to be included in any teaching program. Culture as a set of traits is by and largeneglected area and has drawn little attention. According to a famous professor Hu Wenzhongs paper, more than 90% students admithat there is a cultural gap between native English speakers and Chinese English learners and all of them think that awareness ocultural difference should be made a goal in language learning and teaching. In intercultural communication, culturamisunderstanding is often worse than linguistic one and tend to create ill feeling between native speakers and Chinese speakers oEnglish. Therefore, cultural mistakes as well as linguistic mistakes should be avoided in order to be successful in inter culturacommunication.
文摘The negative pragmatic transfer in second language acquisition has been seen as the major cause of pragmatic failure. In fact, the constant experiencing of negative pragmatic transfer is an active process of learning. The paper investigates the characteristics and classification of the negative pragmatic transfer so that people will have an objective attitude towards it. The author also provides suggestions and strategies so as to help the foreign language learners to establish the confidence in the foreign language study and intercultural communication.
