The migration of healthcare professionals, including nurses,is a global phenomenon. It is driven by various factors, including the pursuit of better opportunities, living conditions, and professional development,as well as political instability or conflict in their home countries. The World Health Organization(WHO)has noted that high-income countries often rely on foreign-trained nurses to fill gaps in their healthcare systems[1].For instance,as of 2021,over 40%(52 million)of all nurses in the United States(US)were expatriates[2].In the United Kingdom(UK),the percentage of expatriate nurses was even higher, reaching approximately 18%in 2021[3].Owing to globalization and migration, healthcare providers must possess cultural competence to deliver improved care[4,5].Culturally responsive teaching(CRT)is rooted in the idea that culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s behaviors, beliefs, values, and communication styles[6].Furthermore,these cultural factors influence patients’perspectives on health, illness, healing, and their preferences for care and communication[7].By recognizing and embracing these cultural differences, nurses can provide more effective and compassionate care to their diverse patient population[8]. 展开更多

Objective:The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in nurses performing shift work in therapeutic and surgical depar tments and to establish possible relationships between level of blood pressure(BP)and quality of sleep. Methods:A total of 20 nurses of the therapeutic depar tments and 20 nurses of the surgical depar tments were enrolled in the study.Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).BP was measured according to the standard protocol using the Korotkoff method;a sphygmomanometer was used for this twice with an interval of 2 min between 10:00 a.m.and 10:30 a.m.The average value for the 2 indicators was calculated. The diagnosis of essential ar terial hyper tension(AH)was established according to the recommendations of the European Association of Cardiology and the European Association of Hypertension(2018).Results:The overall assessment of the sleep quality of the nurses involved in shift work indicates poor sleep quality;this was true in respondents of both the surgical and therapeutic profiles. However,it was observed that the quality of sleep was significantly lower in nurses of the therapeutic departments. Moreover, poor sleep quality was associated with AH,which was diagnosed in 65%of the nurses of the therapeutic departments and 45%of the nurses of the surgical departments, that is,in almost all of the subjects.Herewith,in the nurses of the therapeutic departments, the level of systolic BP exceeded that of the nurses of the surgical departments. Conclusions:Poor sleep quality is a significant risk factor for AH development and is relevant to nurses performing shift work.Additional clinical studies should be conducted to better understand the mechanisms underlying such adverse cardiometabolic outcomes associated with sleep disorders in the health-sector shift workers. 展开更多

Nurses are the main groups that are exposed to these drugs in hospital setting. Generally, the occupational activities that pose to greatest risk of exposure are the preparation and administration of antineoplastic agents, cleaning of chemotherapy spills, and handling of patient excreta. Objective: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the knowledge of nurse regarding the way of exposure of Cytotoxic Drugs (CDs) and to determine the current patterns of use of personal protective equipments while handling antineoplastic chemotherapeutic agents. Methods: An analytic cross sectional study was carried out at BPKIHS Dharan. The study was carried out on 125 nurses. The random sampling technique was used to select the study subjects using structured and semi-structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: More than 92% of participants reported usually wearing gloves during chemotherapy handling;6% reported using laboratory coats as protective garments. Usual use of face and respiratory protection was less than 5%. Chemotherapy was reported to be prepared in nursing station where there are no laminar airflow hoods in 100% of work settings. None of the subjects have reportedly provided any type of medical monitoring. Conclusion: Use and availability of gloves have increased but personal protective equipment like protective garments, face and respiratory protective, when handling chemotherapy have decreased and medical monitoring of exposed employees still is neither widely practiced nor consistent with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. 展开更多

The recent global economic recession has affected nursing working conditions in terms of salary reductions, increased workload and staff shortages. Poor nursing working conditions are associated with higher levels of burnout. However in Greece this association has not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to explore financial crisis related changes in nurses’ working conditions and their associations with burnout. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted and data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from 299 Greek nurses from two Public Hospitals in 2012. Multiple linear regression analyses were used in order to find independent factors associated with burnout. The results showed that Greek nurses had high levels of burnout. Satisfaction from the job, quality of care and feeling equivalent with other professionals were independent predictors of lower emotional exhaustion. Workload increase and willingness to change career and work department were independent predictors of higher emotional exhaustion. Job satisfaction and satisfaction from care quality were independent predictors of lower depersonalization. Changes in working relationships and willingness to change career were independent predictors of higher depersonalization. Higher personal accomplishments were independently associated with more years in nursing, satisfaction from the salary prior to reductions, better quality of care, feeling suitable for the job and being anxious about future career. Influence on nurse efficiency by income reduction was an independent predictor of lower personal accomplishments. In conclusion, Greek nurses were suffering from high levels of burnout which was independently associated with crisis related working conditions. Interventions are needed in order to reduce the burden of burnout among Greek nurses. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the hospice care compliance of nurses working at a hospice ward and provide meaningful data to improve the hospice care compliances. Methods: Participants included 104 nurses working at the hospice ward of the hospital located at P and D cities. Data was collected from February to March 2012. The level of hospice care compliance was measured using Bae (2000)’s questionnaires. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffè test using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The level of hospice care compliance in hospice nurses working at a hospice ward was high (3.25 out of 4). In hospice care compliance, the physical area was highest, followed by the emotional, spiritual, and social areas. Hospice care compliance was significantly different according to age, marital status, education, religion, importance of religion, job position, job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Hospice care compliance was also significantly different according to the nurses’ experience of death, having license or certification related to hospice care and experiences related to clients’ death. Conclusions: The findings of this study showed that the level of hospice care compliance was high and the hospice care compliance in South Korea was primarily focused on physical care. Considering that spiritual needs are important needs in hospice clients, hospice nurses need to focus on those aspects more. To improve the quality of hospice care compliance in the hospice nurses, programs to increase hospice nurses’ job and life satisfaction are needed. 展开更多

Background: Nurses serve as the primary source of care for minor patients in intensive care units. Even though they support both patients and their relatives, these nurses may experience moral distress from their profession. While managing their daily relationships with their patients, nurses must also be able to control their actions to feel that they are from a social unit and feel their competence in association with others. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between professional autonomy and moral distress among nurses working in children's units and pediatric intensive care wards. Methods: This descriptive/comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 using 120 nurses as subjects. Subjects were selected using the census method. The research tools used to gain measurable data were the Pankratznursing questionnaire(PNQ) and Corley'sMoral distress scale (MDS). In order to analyze the collected data, descriptive statistic tests such as the relative frequency distribution, mean, standard deviation and the Pearson correlation test, T-test, ANOVA, and regression were used. The SPSSv.20 software was also used to analyze the data obtained. Results: The relationship between professional autonomy and moral distress revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between professional autonomy and moral distress in the intensity (r=0.39;P<0.001) and the iteration (r=0.41;P<0.001). In addition, professional autonomy predicted 18% of changes in intensity of moral distress in total(MR = 0.42, R2 = 0.18) and also professional au-tonomy predicted 25% of iteration in moral distress in total(MR = 0.507, R2= 0.25). Conclusions: The results of this study revealed that there was a direct positive relationship between professional autonomy and moral distress. 展开更多

A quantitative cross-sectional design was used. The study period was from December 2017 to February 2018. 638 nurses with more than 5 years clinical experience were recruited from seven medical facilities. The questionnaire included the Families’ Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses’ Attitudes (FINC-NA), the Family Sense of Coherence (FSOC), and items on nursing practice ability, job satisfaction, and background characteristics. A multiple regression analysis with FINC-NA as the dependent variable and a path analysis of nursing practice ability as the dependent variable were performed. Responses from 416 nurses (effective response rate, 65.2%) were analyzed. Variables that were significantly related to FINC-NA (p < 0.05) were nursing practice ability, FSOC, job satisfaction, family nursing learning experience, presence of a partner and experience in family nursing. Multiple regression analysis with FINC-NA as the dependent variable revealed significant regression coefficients for nursing practice ability, FSOC and job satisfaction. Moreover, path analysis with nursing practice ability as the dependent variable showed job satisfaction, FSOC, managerial experience, family nursing learning experience were significant. In addition, it was revealed that the direct effect of FSOC on FINC-NA to mediate nursing practice ability was higher than the indirect effect, but the direct effect of job satisfaction on FINC-NA was lower than the indirect effect. It was suggested that it is important that nurses recognize their own thoughts, behaviors and ways of coping with stress within their family, and establish a good work environment and strive to enhance their nursing practice ability. 展开更多

Background: Public health nurses in Japan are nationally licensed professionals who act as members of local governments and provide services to local community residents. Public health nurses must establish their professional identity early on in order to deliver high quality public health services. However, the structure of their professional identity is not fully understood. Objectives: Our purpose was to investigate structures of professional identity of public health nurses working for governmental agencies, and to clarify characteristics of their professional identity. Methods: Questionnaire surveys were conducted on 670 PHNs working for local governmental agencies. The investigation items included measurement indices for professional identity of PHNs, basic attributes, and scales which reflect aspects of self-respect. After analyzing the investigated items, we conducted exploratory factor analysis. Also we named extracted factors, and investigated reliability and appropriateness. Relationships with the attributes or self-respect aspects were also analyzed. Results: Of 350 respondents (52.2%), 309 effective answers (effective answer ratio: 88.2%) were analyzed. Item and factor analyses identified 12 items, which were categorized into 3 factors: “intention to develop professionally”, “confidence in own abilities”, and “occupational affinity”. Scales of self-respect aspects and the index for professional identity showed positive correlation. The coefficient for all 12 items was 0.89. Significant difference with the attributes were noted for “age”, “years of experience as PHNs”, and “number of PHN in the workplace”. Conclusion: Professional identify of PHNs is found to be consisted of 3 factors. 展开更多

Emotional intelligence is a social skill and an important component of communication. It can be expressed as the ability to correctly identify emotions, to make proper decisions and to solve problems. Based on the conducted researchs, emotional intelligence is an important factor in achieving success in life including occupation and education. This study was designed and implemented to determine the effects of emotional intelligence on the quality of nurses' working life. This quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2015 on 70 of hospital nurses. Samples were randomly collected and divided into 2 groups (35 nurses in each group) and training sessions of emotional intelligence were conducted. Before the first session and after session 12, the quality of working life was measured by Walton's standard questionnaire of working life in both groups. The average age of the control and the experimental group was 30.83 ± 3.785 and 29.54 ± 3.407 respectively. Quality of working life in the experimental group had significant positive changes in comparison with the control group (P 〈 0.001) after the completion of training sessions. Based on the results, nurses' quality of working life improved after training. It seems that it is possible to improve university students and nurses" quality of working life by holding special workshops of emotional intelligence in training centers. 展开更多

Background: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the stages of nurse burnout in hospitals (their states of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization) as well as factors related to the nurses personal characteristics and coping behaviors in order to obtain suggestions for stress and health management strategies that nurses themselves can employ. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using anonymous self-administered questionnaires. The subjects were nurses employed at public hospitals with 500 beds in 3 cities in Hokkaido, Japan. The questionnaire items for burnout were those included on the Japanese Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which are designed to ascertain the subjects’ emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and sense of personal accomplishment. In addition, we used 11 items related to physical and mental stress responses on the Stress Coping Inventory and the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire to determine factors such as the nurses’ basic attributes, whether or not they worked night shifts, and their overtime hours, etc. Results: We received responses from 1461 hospital nurses. Those whose scores for both emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were the mean or above were 40.2% of those in their twenties, 35.8% of those in their thirties, and 26.8% of those in their forties or older. The results of logistic regression analysis indicated that among those in the group that scored high for both emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, the influential factors were stress score (odds ratio 1.889), twenties age group (odds ratio 1.982), thirties age group (odds ratio 1.720), coping behavior: avoidance-focused behaviors (odds ratio 1.140), and engaged in childcare (odds ratio 0.487). Similarly, when looked at by age group, being in the twenties age group and having a spouse were influential factors (odds ratio 3.114 - 4.171). Conclusion: The results of this study elucidated the fact that for hospital nurses, the burnout stage, age, state of physical and mental stress response, and coping behavior can be effectively used as predictive indices. 展开更多

Background and Aim: Work-Related Stress in nurses is considered a common problem worldwide. Therefore, this study aims to identify the sources of stress among nurses in Saudi Arabia to understand the effect of these stressors on their mental health and physical health. Materials and Methods: A self-administrative questionnaire to assess sources of work stress, physical health, and mental health was administrated to 213 nurses working in intensive care units. Results: The results demonstrated that workload, lack of resources and support, and dealing with death and dying are the principal sources of work’s stress. Nurses reported that back pain, headache, and fatigue are the most common health problems while nervousness (32.4%) and exhaustion (30%) were the most frequent mental health problem. Moreover, the results revealed a positive correlation between Work-Related Stress and Health Problems. Objective:The objective of the present study is to explore the effects of personality traits on job burnout among hospital nurses.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional research was done during 2019-2020 at Kashan Shahid Beheshti Hospital. The data analysis procedures included descriptive statistics and the partial least squares-based structural equation modeling. The participants were 150 nursing professionals.A questionnaire indicating information on demographics, burnout(measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory with three dimensions of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and personal accomplishment),and personality profile(measured employing the neuroticism extraversion openness five-factor inventory including extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, and openness to experience dimensions)was used to gather the required data. Results:The results of the study showed that the validity and reliability of the measurement model were desirable(factor load higher than 0.5,the Cronbach’s alpha value and the composite reliability are>0.7).Structural model showed statistically drastic, negative relationship between the nurses’burnout levels and neuroticism(β=0.722)and openness to experience(β=0.437).However,the relationship was significantly positive between the nurses’burnout levels and conscientiousness(β=0.672),agreement(β=0.594),and extraversion(β=0.559)(P<0.03).Conclusions:The present study helped the recognition of burnout among nurses working in hospitals and approved the effects of personality features on the burnout experience. 展开更多
