Comments were made on the "word-for-word" literal translation method used by Mr. Nigel Wiseman in A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine. He believes that only literal translation can reflect Chinese medical concepts accurately. The so-called "word-for-word" translation is actually "English-word-for- Chinese-character" translation. First, the authors of the dictionary made a list of Single Characters with English Equivalents, and then they gave each character of the medical term an English equivalent according to the list. Finally, they made some minor modifications to make the rendering grammatically smoother. Many English terms thus produced are confusing. The defect of the word-for-word literal translation stems from the erroneous idea that a single character constitutes the basic element of meaning corresponding to the notion of "word" in English, and the meaning of a disyllabic or polysyllabic Chinese word is the simple addition of the constituent characters. Another big mistake is the negligence of the polysemy of Chinese characters. One or two English equivalents can by no means cover all the various meanings of a single character which is a polysemous monosyllabic word. Various examples were cited from this dictionary to illustrate the mistakes. 展开更多

Mr. Wiseman believes that Western medical terms chosen as equivalents of Chinese medical terms should be the words known to all speakers and not requiring any specialist knowledge or instrumentation to understand or identify, and strictly technical Western medical terms should be avoided regardless of their conceptual conformity to the Chinese terms. Accordingly, many inappropriate Western medical terms are selected as English equivalents by the authors of the Dictionary, and on the other hand, many ready-made appropriate Western medical terms are replaced by loan English terms with the Chinese style of word formation. The experience gained in solving the problems of translating Western medical terms into Chinese when West- ern medicine was first introduced to China is helpful for translating Chinese medical terms into English. However, the authors of the Dictionary adhere to their own opinions, ignoring others" experience. The English terms thus created do not reflect the genuine meaning of the Chinese terms, but make the English glossary in chaos. The so-called true face of traditional Chinese revealed by such terms is merely the Chinese custom of word formation and metaphoric rhetoric. In other words, traditional Chinese medicine is not regarded as a system of medicine but merely some Oriental folklore. 展开更多

Chinese medicine (CM) has been an experience based practice over the past three thousand years. The safety and efficacy of CM has been practised through experience, rather than nowadays’ modern scientific measurements. In this way, the development of CM has not been keeping pace with the advance in science and technology and the progress in orthodox medicine. In order to meet the requirements of modern science and technology, an evidence based approach must be adopted. Reassurance is needed to convince people for safety and efficacy of CM and give confidence to the evidence based demands ——“Tradition is confirmed by Modern Science” (1) . 展开更多

BACKGROUND : c-fos and c-jun, the important immediate early genes (IEG), are regarded as the markers for the location and function of neuronal activity, as well as the third signal messengers, they couple the stress stimulation and the gene expression in neuron, and hippocampus is involved in the process of signal transmission after stress stimulation induced depression. OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effects of Bushen Yiqi (tonifying kidney to benefit qi), Huoxue Huayu (promoting blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis) and Ditan Kaiqiao (eliminating phlegm for resuscitation) on the expressions of c-Fos and c-Jun proteins in hippocampus and spontaneous behaviors of rats with post-stroke depression (PSD), and compare the results with those of fluoxetine, which is known to have definite effect on depression. DESIGN: A randomized controlled tna SETTING : Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine MATERIALS : The trial was completed in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January to July in 2003. Fifty-six healthy adult Wistar male rats of clean grade, weighing (250±50) g, were randomly divided into 7 groups with 8 rats in each group: control group, model group, forced swimming group, Bushen Yiqi group; Huoxue Huayu, Ditan Kaiqiao group and fluoxetine group. The Bushen Yiqi Tang contained Renshen, Huangqi, Heshouwu, Gouqi, Shudi, etc., crude drugs 1 800 g/L. The Huoxue Huayu Tang contained Danshen, Chuanxiong, Chishao, Yujin, etc., crude drugs 3 600 g/L. The Ditan Kaiqiao Tang contained Banxia, Danxing, Changpu, Yuanzhi, etc., crude drug 1 000 g/b METHODS: ① Except the control group and forced swimming group, rats in the other groups were made into PSD models by deligating the bilateral common carotid artedes permanently. ② Rats in the control group, model group and forced swimming group were intragastncally perfused by saline (3 mL for each time); those in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Huayu, Ditan Kaiqiao group and fluoxetine group were intragastncally perfused with Bushen Yiqi Tang (18 g/kg), Huoxue Huayu Tang (9 g/kg), Ditan Kaiqiao Tang (9 g/kg) and fluoxetine (2.5 mg/kg) respectively, once a day. ③ At 55 days after model establishment, rats in the forced swimming group were managed according to the Porsolt's method. They were placed in water for 15 minutes, and then taken out and dned, no moving-time within 5 minutes was recorded at drying and 24 hours after drying. ④ Measurement of spontaneous behaviors: Except the forced swimming group, the spontaneous behaviors and activities (including horizontal and vertical movements) of rats were observed with the Open-Field method at 28, 42 and 56 days after administration in the other groups. ⑤ The expressions of c-Fos and coJun proteins in hippocampus were determined with the immunohistochemical method, the relative sectional area ratio and average objective gray value of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells in hip- pocampus were measured with the computerized image analytical system. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The spontaneous behaviors of rats, the relative sectional area ratio and average objective gray value of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells in hippocampus were observed. RESULTS: Of the 56 rats, 1 died in the forced swimming group, and finally 55 rats were involved in the analysis of results. ① Results of spontaneous activities: At 28 days, the times of crossing movements were obviously fewer in the model group and fluoxetine group [(69.00±37.01), (98.11 ±36.68) times/3 minutes] than in the control group [(128.44±16.85) times/3 minutes, P 〈 0.01, 0.05], but those in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group had no obvious differences as compared with those in the control group (P 〉 0.05). At 42 and 56 days, the times of crossing movements were obviously more in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group [(106.44±31.24), (117.20±23.95), (134.80±28.18), (136.36±40.95) times/3 minutes; (117.33±35.91), (129.60 ±23.78), (131.90 ±26.81), (136.09±28.34) times/3 minutes] than in the model group [(64.00±17.51), (72.86±20.68) times/3 minutes, P 〈 0.01]. The times of rearing movements had no obvious differences among the groups for the three times (P 〉 0.05). ② The no moving-time within 5 minutes 24 hours after drying was obviously longer than that at drying in the forced swimming group. ③ The average objective gray values of c-Fos positive cells were not obviously different in the Bushen Yiqi group and Ditan Kaiqiao group from the control group (P 〉 0.05), but lower in the model group than in the control group (69.84±9.82, 75.78±5.89, P 〈 0.01), and higher in the forced swimming group than in the control group (85.97±10.99, P 〈 0.01); all higher in the fluoxetine group, Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the model group (81.27±10.73, 74.04±8.34, 83.29±9.89, 70.14±4.92, P 〈 0.05-0.01). The average objective gray values of c-Jun positive cells were obviously lower in the Bushen Yiqi group than in the control group (68.11 ±6.89, 79.58±5.86, P 〈 0.01), but all higher in the other groups than in the control group (84.68±7.15, 81.34 ±8.36, 97.51±10.55, 85.68±9.25, 86.19±10.98, P 〈 0.05-0.01); Those were obviously higher in the fluoxetine group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the model group (P 〈 0.05-0.01 ), lower in the Bushen Yiqi group than in the model group (P 〈 0.05), all obviously lower in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the fluoxetine group (P 〈 0.01). The relative sectional area ratios of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells had no obvious differences among the groups (P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION : The methods of Bushen Yiqi, Huoxue Quyu and Ditan Kaiqiao can effectively treat PSD in rats, and the results were equivalent with those of fluoxetine, the actions of the above-mentioned drugs may correlated with their regulation to c-Fos and c-Jun expressions in hippocampus. PSD animal models can be successfully established by both permanent deligation of bilateral common carotid arteries and forced swimming, and the models induced by the former has similar basic cerebrovascular lesions as human stroke in clinic. 展开更多

Accumulating data indicate that kidney tonifying recipe to treat depression patients may significantly reduce clinical symptoms, effectively improve the quality and prognosis of the patient's life. Clinical and experimental studies have suggested that tonifying kidney recipe has multiple targets, and thereby via multiple ways to accomplish antidepressant effect. The tonifying kidney recipe has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to control neurotrophic factor so as to promote the growth, differentiation, maturation of neurons. The tonifying kidney recipe participates in protection of neural plasticity, brain development, immune regulation, and a variety of other physiological processes to act as an antidepressant that has great similarity as vitamin D axis. In this article, we describe the current knowledge to introduct the relationship between kidney deficiency and vitamin D axis, and speculate about the molecular mechanism of tonifying kidney recipe in the treatment of depression by regulating vitamin D axis. 展开更多

A case of progressive supranuclear palsy in a 66-year-old woman is presented. The patient complained of“progressive stiffness of both lower limbs for five years, accompanied by choking and coughing for more than 1 year,”and was diagnosed with paralysis in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which was characterized by a deficiency of liver and kidney, and phlegm and blood stasis blocking the collaterals.Western medicine diagnosed it as progressive supranuclear palsy. The patient was diagnosed with“Parkinson’s disease”several times in the past and was given“polybasic hydrazide”and“amantadine hydrochloride tablets,”etc. The patient did not have significant symptomatic relief,so she sought further treatment with a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.Based on the concept of deficiency and excess, this disease is categorized as a paralytic disease in Chinese medicine, and the onset of the disease is closely related to the deficiency of the body after a long period of illness, with wind, phlegm, blood stasis, and deficiency as the main pathogenetic mechanism. The treatment is based on the combination of disease and evidence, with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture as the main treatments, supplemented by intermediate-frequency pulsed electrical stimulation, transcranial repetitive magnetic stimulation, medicated canisters, wax therapy, traditional Chinese medicine guasha, and acupoint injections.Western medicine is based on symptomatic treatment, and the patient’s symptoms were relieved significantly after the combination of Chinese and Western medicine. 展开更多

The research and development (R&D) process of Chinese medicine, with one notable feature, clinical application based, is significantly different from which of chemical and biological medicine, from laboratory research to clinics. Besides, compound prescription is another character. Therefore, according to different R&D theories between Chinese and Western medicine, we put forward a new strategy in drug design of Chinese medicine, which focuses on "combination- activity relationship (CAR)", taking prescription discovery, component identification and formula optimization as three key points to identify the drugs of high efficacy and low toxicity. The method of drug design of Chinese medicine includes: new prescription discovery based on clinical data and literature information, component identification based on computing and experimental research, as well as formula optimization based on system modeling. This paper puts forward the concept, research framework and techniques of drug design of Chinese medicine, which embodies the R&D model of Chinese medicine, hoping to support the drug design of Chinese medicine theoretically and technologically. 展开更多

Translational medicine is a new concept presented in recent decades, the core of which is to build a bridge between basic medical research and clinical application. From the beginning of constitution of Chinese medicine, clinical application has been given priority. Therefore, the idea of translational medicine is fully demonstrated in the research into the three key scientific problems of "classification of constitution of Chinese medicine", "relationship between constitution and disease" and "adjustment of constitution". Under its guidance, not only was the systematic theory of constitution of Chinese medicine established, but also the Constitution of Chinese Medicine Scale and the Standards of Classification and determination of Constitution of Chinese Medicine were developed, which translates methods of classifying the nine constitutional types into guidance for prevention of disease, management of health and clinical application. The research findings of constitution of Chinese medicine have been applied in clinical practice and public health, establishing the diagnosis and treatment model of constitution-disease-syndrome differentiation. The nationwide application of constitution differentiation has shown good effect. In the future, constitution of Chinese medicine should strengthen the evidence-based research and multi-disciplinary cooperation, and establish a research team on comprehensive constitution of Chinese medicine and translational medicine, to translate the findings into clinical practice and public health more accurately and quickly. 展开更多

We studied the effects of nasal thermosensible gels containing Chinese medicine Xingbi on Bufo gargarizans maxillary mucosal cilia movement and the ciliotoxicity in rats nasal mucosa. The saline water was used as a blank control, and 1% hydrochloric acid of methamphetamine Massachusetts was used as the negative control. Compared with normal saline control, the relative percentage of the lasting time of ciliary movement treated with Chinese medicine Xingbi was 94.1%. There was no remarkable pathological change in the tissue slice of nasal mucosa, and no stimulation on nasal mucous membrane was observed. So these data suggest that nasal thermosensible gel of Chinese medicine Xingbi is of high safety. It has no damage to the mucosa of toads and rats and can be used for intranasal administration. 展开更多
