It is expected that Asia will acco...Booming economic development during the past decades has made the East and Southeast Asian region one of the most dynamic economies in the world and brought about rapid urbanization. It is expected that Asia will account for 12 of the world’s 25 cities with population exceeding 10 million by 2000. Tokyo will have more than 27 million people and Shanghai and Jakarta will each have more than 20 million people. Demand for water supply, as a result, will drastically increase. Data show that most of the East and Southeast Asian countries are faced with serious water shortage and contamination, in particular in the urbanized areas. The vulnerability of water supply constituents one of the greatest threats to the sustainable socio economic development of the region. Great efforts have been made to conserve both surface and subsurface water resources, to protect water from contamination and to use water in an efficient way. In addition to the establishment of administrative agencies under the governments in individual countries, a number of regional and country wide projects have been launched for a solution to ease the water vulnerability. The Coordinating Committee for Coastal and Offshore Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP), an intergovernmental organization of the region, has devoted itself to coordinating regional endeavours to solve applied geoscientific problems through technology transfer, human resources development and regional data compilation. The regional map series and related databases produced by CCOP have provided useful information on regional geological background, which is also essential for the solution of water problems. However, it is obvious that regional efforts are not enough to meet the challenges we are faced with. In addition to raising public awareness and governmental concerns, advanced technologies, in particular those used in the petroleum industry to deal with oil and gas, a sort of fluid resources similar to water, must be adopted to the water supply industry. Since 1996, CCOP has, in cooperation with the developed countries, been working on a project called Petrowater. The Project aims at using the technology and infrastructures related to the oil industry to the water supply industry.展开更多

Food system resilience to climate change is uniquely imperative for bringing Sustainable Development Goals within reach and leaving no one behind.Food systems in East and Southeast Asia are interacting with planetary ...Food system resilience to climate change is uniquely imperative for bringing Sustainable Development Goals within reach and leaving no one behind.Food systems in East and Southeast Asia are interacting with planetary boundaries and are adversely affected by extreme weather-related events.A practical question for East and Southeast Asian stakeholders is how to foster climate-resilient food systems in the face of lingering food system vulnerabilities and policy gaps.This paper reviews food system vulnerabilities and policy responses to climate change.In the policy-based review,this paper compares the economy-wide and agriculture-specific targets of low-carbon development across East and Southeast Asia.With China and member states of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations as case studies,multilevel policies in building and financing climate-resilient food systems are further synthesized.The findings confirm significant differences in agriculture-specific emission goals and public financing supports across East and Southeast Asian nations.With an objective to break practical barriers and finance climate-resilient food systems for the future,this paper recommends defining agriculture-specific greenhouse gas emission goals,reorienting the public finance scheme and enhancing mechanisms for the synergy of public and private resources.展开更多

The features and gen...Multi-stage Mesozoic thrust-nappe and extensional structures are distributed in the east segment of the Southeast Yangtze Block situated in the junction region of Zhejiang-Jiangxi-Anhui provinces. The features and genetic mechanism of the deformations were analyzed after a detailed field observation of their distribution, geometry, and kinematics. In addition, the time sequences of the thrust and extensional structures were determined by combining the results of the comparative analysis with the chronological evidence of strata and magmatic rocks cut by a fault or formed after a fault according to field facts. This study identified three stages of the nappe structures and at least two stages of the extensional structures during the Mesozoic. The geotectonic setting of the nappe and extensional structures was considered to be related to the different geodynamics in the study area including the Early Mesozoic geological event, i.e., N-S compression, forming Lantian fault, etc.;the Late Mesozoic flat-slab subduction, forming Xiaoxi thrust fault and tectonic window;and the roll-back of the paleoPacific Plate, forming extensional structures like basin marginal fault;the last compression, forming Wucheng-Shenxian fault. These findings provide additional evidence for remodeling the tectonic and geodynamic evolution of Southeast China.展开更多
Based on the wind and hydrographic data obtained from the cruise of China - Japan Cooper- ative Research on Subtropical Gyre during December 1997, the Kuroshio east of Taiwan Island and the currents southeast of the R...Based on the wind and hydrographic data obtained from the cruise of China - Japan Cooper- ative Research on Subtropical Gyre during December 1997, the Kuroshio east of Taiwan Island and the currents southeast of the Ryukyu-gunto are computed by using three-dimensional diagnostic, semidiag- nostic and prognostic models in the a coordinate. The computed results show that: (1 ) The density and velocity fields have been adjusted when time is about 15 d, namely, the solution of semidiagnostic calcu- lation is obtained. The quasi-steady state solution has been reached after 300 d, thus and the results of prognostic calculation got. (2) From the diagnostic calculation, the following main results can be obtained-1) There is a stronger cyclonic eddy with tongue-shaped in the region south of Taiwan Island, and the Kuroshio is located east of this cyclonic eddy. Compared with the results in July 1997, the position of the main axis of the Kuroshio moves eastward. 2) There is an anticyclonic eddy south of Miyako- jima, and there is a cyclonic eddy near the middle of the southern computational boundary. 3) The upwelling dominates in an area of the Kuroshio near Taiwan Island. (3) Comparing the results of diagnostic calculation with those of semidiagnotic and prognostic calculations indicates that the hortizontal velocity fields agree qualitatively, and there is a little difference between them in quantity. For example, the maximun horizontal velocities of the Kuroshio at the sea surface at t = 0 d (diagnostic), 15 d (semiaiagnostic) and 300 d (prognostic) are 88. 6, 98. 0 and 97. 0 cm/s, respectively. As to the distributions of vertical components of velocity, there are some differences between them, which shows that the semidiagnostic and porognostic results can coincide with better the salinity and temperature distributions.展开更多
This paper examines the prominence of East and Southeast Asia as a focus of communications and game studies.The idea of going regional when researching video games comes from the fact that each locale has its trait to...This paper examines the prominence of East and Southeast Asia as a focus of communications and game studies.The idea of going regional when researching video games comes from the fact that each locale has its trait to construct its gaming industry and gaming environment from which the gaming experience is also reflected differently.The reasons provided,ranging from the regional market^dynamic nature to the attention that the governing states have paid to the gaming industry,help place Asia-Pacific in general and East and Southeast Asia particularly in the global gaming juxtaposition where the other part is usually the Western countries.Examples that help highlight the rising prominence of the regions as the most potential areas are also considered.This review’s findings indicate that East and Southeast Asia have gradually built up their reputation by actively joining the designing,processing,and distributing digital products system.Thus,the focus of future research on the regions should be more concerned with video gaming.展开更多
