CZO (CeO2-ZrO2) and CZYO (CeO2-ZrO2-Y2O3) series of mixed oxides were prepared by coprecipitaion, and a part of these oxides were loaded with precious metals (PM). XRD, BET, and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) i... CZO (CeO2-ZrO2) and CZYO (CeO2-ZrO2-Y2O3) series of mixed oxides were prepared by coprecipitaion, and a part of these oxides were loaded with precious metals (PM). XRD, BET, and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) investigations were performed on samples aged at 750, 900, and 1050 ℃. It was observed that BET surface area and OSC showed a marked decrease in CeO2 aged at high temperature, and the erystallite size showed an obvious increase. The CZO samples consist of cubic- and tetragonal crvstal phases, and their crystallite size increase rapidly when aged at high temperature. The CZYO samples consist of single crystal phase when the content of Y exceeds 0.15 mol, and their erystallite size increases slowly during high-temperature aging. It is concluded that additive Y can stabilize the performance of CZYO oxides. In the aged CZO and CZYO mixed-oxide systems, addition of a small amount of precious metals (Pt, Pd, Rh) increased the rate of reduction and led to an obvious improvement in OSC. OSC of CZO and CZYO with precious metals are related to their composition and the type of precious metal. 展开更多

Pr2O3 possesses the similar oxygen storage properties to CeO2, and its dynamic oxygen storage capacity is 14.9 mumol.g(-1). The studies on TPD Of O-2, H2O and CO and TPR show that Pr2O3 provides more active surface oxygen species and at a lower temperature than CeO2. It is suggested that Pr2O3 can be a well candidate as an oxygen storage component in automobile three-way catalyst. 展开更多

Dynamic Oxygen Storage Capacity Measurements on Ceria-Based Material

Dynamic oxygen storage and release capability (OSC) measurement apparatus was designed to evaluate the OSC performance of ceria-based oxygen storage material. The optimum measurement condition was at a frequency of 0.1 Hz with the inlet gas-flow sequence CO (5S)→O2(5S)→CO→O2 and a flow rate of 300 ml·min^-1. Under this condition, similar regular square wave in the inlet and outlet of the reactor was obtained to guarantee the reliability of the dynamic OSC results. The dynamic OSC performance of the CeO2 and Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 mixed oxide prepared using the citric sol-gel method was studied at the optimum measurement condition with focus on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, The results reveal distinctly that Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 had better dynamic OSC performance because of its higher oxygen migration rate than CeO2. Under dynamic conditions, two CO2 production peaks occurred corresponding to the CO pulse and the O2 pulse, respectively, during the entire cycle. The intensity and ratio between the two CO2 productions were highly influenced by temperature and frequency indicating complex surface phenomena during the oxygen storage/release process, As a result, this set-up can be applied to the evaluation of ceria-based material on the OSC performance. 展开更多

The structure and reducibilit... Praseodymium (Pr) was impregnated to CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution by an impregnation method. The as-obtained Pr modi- fied CeO2-ZrO2 was impregnated with 1 wt.% Pd to prepare the catalysts. The structure and reducibility of the fresh and hydrother- really aged catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO chemi- sorption and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) was evaluated with CO serving as probe gas. Effects of impregnated Pr on the structure and oxygen storage capacity of catalysts were investigated. The results showed that the aged Pr-impregnated samples had much higher OSC and better reducibility than the unmodified ones. The scheme of structural evolutions of the catalysts with and without Pr was also established. Partial of the impregnated Pr diffused into the bulk of CeO2-ZrO2 during ageing, which inhibited the sintering, and increased the amount of oxygen vacancies in CeO2-ZrO2 support. Furthermore, those impregnated Pr species which covered on the surface of the support obstructed the strong metal-support interaction between Pd and Ce so as to reduce the encapsulation of Pd as well as the back spill-over of the oxygen during the catalytic process. 展开更多

Binary Ce-Zr(CZ),Pr-Zr(PZ) and ternary Ce-Zr-Pr(CZP) mixed oxides were prepared by an ammonia-aided co-precipitation method,and were aged in a steam/air flow at 1050 °C.X-ray diffraction(XRD),Raman spectra,X-photon spectra(XPS) and CO temperature programmed reduction(TPR) were carried out to characterize the micro-structure and reducibility of catalysts.The oxygen storage capacity(OSC) was evaluated with CO serving as probe gas.The results showed that a pseudo cubic structure was formed for the Zr-rich ceria-zirconia mixed oxides with Pr doping.The insertion of Pr prevented the phase segregation of the mixed oxides during the hydrothermal ageing.The Pr doped samples showed better redox performances in comparison with CZ,and the sample doped with 5 wt.% Pr showed the most remarkably promoted dynamic oxygen storage capacity.This phenomenon was closely related to both the reducibility and oxygen mobility of the mixed oxides.The introduction of praseodymium into ceria-zirconia could accelerate the oxygen migration by increasing the amount of oxygen vacancies,although it was difficult for Pr3+ ions themselves to participate in the oxygen exchange process. 展开更多

Cerium and cerium-based oxides are found to be an important element in three-way catalytic converter(TWC).The effective utilization of TWC is found to be reduced due to thermal loading which results in structural deformation of ceria,Doping Zr^(4+)into the rare earth element can increase the oxygen storage capacity and thermal stability.Hence,an attempt was made to study the oxygen storage capacity and thermal stability of ceria by doping Zr^(4+)and Nd^(3+).Cerium-based nanocrystallite in the composition of Ce_(0.6)Zr_(0.4-x)Nd_(1.3)xO_(2)(0≤x≤0.4)was prepared by sol-gel synthesize technique with citric acid as a gel-forming agent.X-ray diffraction(XRD)result shows that doping Nd^(3+)into ceria lattice forms homogenous solid solution of cubic fluorite structure up to 25%of substitute only.Doping higher amount of Nd^(3+)into ceria lattice leads to the formation of Nd_(2)O_(3).Raman spectrum study confirms that oxygen storage capacity band is present in Ce_(0.6)Zr_(0.4)O2 and Ce_(0.6)Zr_(0.3)Nd_(0.13)O_(2).The oxygen storage capacity was calculated through weight loss of the sample during the second heating cycle with cyclic heating from30 to 800℃in thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The TGA study reveals that the oxygen storage capacity of Ce_(0.6)Zr_(0.4)O2 decreases after the substitution of Nd^(3+),which is due to the larger ionic radius of Nd^(3+)compared with that of Zr4+and CeO2. 展开更多

Four kinds of CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxides, i.e., a physical mixture of ceria and zirconia (CZP), zirconia-coated ceria (ZCC), ceria-coated zirconia (CCZ) and a chemical mixture of celia and zirconia (CZC), were prepared. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurements at 500℃ were performed under transient and stationary reaction conditions. All the curves of CO2 evolution during CO-O2 cycles presented a bimodal shape. The fast peak was primarily the result of the reaction of CO with the oxygen from the oxides, which was mainly determined by the nature of the material The sec- ond peak was mostly related to the CO2 adsorption behavior and was highly influenced by the surface area and the number of surface active sites. As a result, OSC activity of the samples followed in the order of CZC 〉 CCZ 〉 ZCC=CZP. 展开更多

The effect of Co doping on ceria-zirconia mixed oxides was investigated for Co0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox sample prepared by sol-gel method. The Pd-only three-way catalyst (TWC) was obtained by incipient wetness impregnation with 0.5 wt.% Pd loading. The structural and oxygen handling properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and the dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC). The introduction of Co into ceria-zirconia lattice strongly modified the mobility of oxygen and enhanced the DOSC performance. Pd-only TWC based on the Co0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox support exhibited superior activity for water-gas shift and steam reforming and ampli- fied amplitude of stoichiometric window. 展开更多

High thermal stability of the textural properties is one of the most important requirements for practical application since temperatures up to 1273 K are easily experienced by these materials under real working conditions. In the present paper, we investigated how hydrothermal treatments applied to cakes of doped and undoped ZrO2-rich CeO2-ZrO2 precursors might improve the thermal stability of the final CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution. A rationale was developed that allowed to correlate the morphology of the hydrothermaUy treated cake with the thermal stability at 1273 K of the final product, which did not depend on the composition of the mixed oxides. 展开更多

CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 ternary oxides were successfully prepared by a green route of supercritical anti-solvent precipitation with supercritical CO2 as anti-solvent and methanol as solvent. The structures and oxygen storage capacities of these ternary oxides were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra and oxygen storage capacity measurements. It was found that Al3+ and Zr4+ inserted into CeO2 lattice, forming CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 solid solution. The concentration of aluminium isopropoxide in the solution affected the concentration of oxygen vacancy and the distortion of oxygen sublattice which were responsible for the oxygen storage capacity. The rapidest oxygen uptake/release rate and maximum total oxygen storage capacity (122.0 mmolO2/molCeO2) were obtained with the aluminitun isopropoxide concentration at 0.2 wt.% in the solution. 展开更多

Au]Cel_xZrxO2 catalysts (x = 0-0.8) were prepared by a deposition-precipitation method using Cel_xZrxO2 nanoparticles as supports with variable Ce and Zr contents. Their structures were characterized by complimentary means such as X-ray diffraction, Raman, scanning trans- mission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These Au catalysts possessed similar sizes and crystalline phases of Cel_xZrzO2 supports as well as similar sizes and oxidation states of Au nanoparticles. The oxidation state of Au nanoparticles was dominated by Au~ especially in CO oxidation. Their activities were examined in CO oxidation at different temperatures in the range of 303-333 K. The CO oxidation rates normalized per Au atoms increased with the increasing Ce contents, and reached the maximum value over Au/CeO2. Such change was in parallel with the change in the oxygen storage capacity values, i.e. the amounts of active oxygen species on Au/Cel_zZrzO2 catalysts. The excellent correlation between the two properties of the catalysts suggests that the intrinsic support effects on the CO oxidation rates is related to the effects on the adsorption and activation of O2 on Au/Cel_xZrxO2 catalysts. Such understanding on the support effects may be useful for designing more active Au catalysts, for example, by tuning the redox properties of oxide supports. 展开更多

Copper intercalated birnessite MnO2(δ-MnO2)with weak crystallinity and high specific surface area(421 m2/g)was synthesized by a one-pot redox method and investigated for low-temperature CO oxidation.The molar ratio of Cu/Mn was as high as 0.37,which greatly weakened the Mn-O bond and created a lot of low-temperature active oxygen species.In situ DRIFTS revealed strong bonding of copper ions with CO.As-synthesized MnO2-150Cu achieved 100%conversion of 250 ppm CO in normal air(3.1 ppm H2O)even at−10°C under the weight-hourly space velocity(WHSV)of 150 L/(g·h).In addition,it showed high oxygen storage capacity to oxidize CO in inert atmosphere.Though the concurrent moisture in air significantly inhibited CO adsorption and its conversion at ambient temperature,MnO2-150Cu could stably convert CO in 1.3%moisture air at 70°C owing to its great low-temperature activity and reduced competitive adsorption of water with increased temperature.This study discovers the excellent low-temperature activity of weakly crystallizedδ-MnO2 induced by high content intercalated copper ions. 展开更多

The next-generation Euro 7 standard proposed much lower pollutant limits from gasoline vehicles,specifically for CO and NO_(x),which would be challenging for the three-way catalysts(TWCs)utilized commercially to eliminate these pollutants.TWCs with reductive(Rh)and oxidative(Pd)active components on gasoline particulate filters(TWC on GPF)play importantly auxiliary roles in the remediation of CO and NO_(x)downstream the close coupled TWCs to meet their emission targets.Here,a low-content Rh-based TWC(0.17 wt%)zoned with a less expensive Pd-based TWC(0.29 wt%)for GPF applications(cGPF)is reported using improved colloidal deposition method.The supporting of Rh on Y-stabilized ZrO_(2)rather than on CeO_(2)-ZrO_(2)inhibits the formation of inactive Ce rhodate species,while Pd on CeO_(2)-ZrO_(2)not only guarantees the high oxygen storage capacity(OSC)but also enhances catalytic activity.The layout of the front one-fifth in volume being 0.29 wt%Pd on Ce_(0.43)Zr_(0.5)7O_(2)and the rear four-fifths being 0.17 wt%Rh on Zr_(0.85)Y_(0.15)O_(2)prevents the possible alloying of Rh with Pd.The highly effective zoned Rh and Pd TWCs show synergistic three-way activity before and after severe hydrothermal aging at 1000℃with 10%water for24 h,which could be potential choices for close coupled GPF application to satisfy the upcoming stringent emission standards,such as Euro 7 and China 6b. 展开更多

A series of Pt-Pd bimetallic catalysts supported on CeO_(2)-ZrO_(2)-La_(2)O_(3) mixed oxides were synthesized through the conventional impregnation method.Three-way catalytic performance evaluations along with detailed physio-chemical characterizations were carried out to establish possible structure-activity correlations.Results show that on the one hand,different Pt/Pd ratios can strongly affect the TWC behaviors of Pt-Pd/CZL catalysts by modulating the synergistic effect between Pt and Pd.On the other hand,higher Pt/Pd ratio also favors better dispersion of precious metals.Such improved precious metals(PM)dispersion can promote the metal-support interaction and increase the surface oxygen vacancies concentration,thereby raising the dynamic oxygen storage/release capacity,improving the redox ability as well as enha ncing the thermal stability of the Pt-Pd/CZL catalyst.Moreover,the stro ng metal-support interaction can augment surface oxygen vacancy concentration,thereby benefiting low temperature CO and NO reaction via augmented NOxadsorption and nitrate conversion. 展开更多

Potassium-modified ceria-zirconia catalyst was synthesized by wetness impregnation method. The ageing treatment was performed in static air at 800℃ for 20 hr to evaluate the thermal stability of the catalyst. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, oxygen storage capacity, NOx-temperature programmed desorption and soot-temperature programmed oxidation measurements. By introduction of potassium, the maximum soot oxidation rate temperature (Tin) of the ceria-zirconia based catalyst decreased from 525 to 428℃ in the presence of NO under a loose contact mode. The shift of Tm of the K-modified catalyst after ageing is only 15℃. The enhanced activity of the aged catalyst mainly lies in the promotional effect of potassium on the NOx/oxygen storage capacity as well as the soot-catalyst contact. 展开更多

The nano-crystalline Cu-Ce-Zr-O composite oxides were successfully prepared by the supercritical anti-solvent (SAS) process. The physicochemical properties and catalytic performances were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2 -TPR), oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurement and catalytic activity evaluation. It was found that Cu2+ ions incorporated into CeO2 -ZrO2 lattice to form Cu-Ce-Zr-O solid solution associated with the formation of oxygen vacancies. The Cu-Ce-Zr-O catalysts prepared via the SAS process with the Cu content 2.63 mol.% showed the highest OSC index of 636.9 μmol/g. Compared with the samples prepared by impregnation method, Cu doping using SAS process could improve the dispersion of Cu2+ in the composite oxide, enhance the interaction between Cu2+ and CeO2-ZrO2 , improve the reducibility of catalyst, and thus improve the OSC performance and increase the catalytic activity for CO oxidation at low temperature. 展开更多

The effect of H2O2 on the properties of Ce0.65Zr0.35O2 a mixed aqueous solution of ammonia and was explored by treating cerium nitrate and zirconium nitrate with in the presence/absence of H2O2. The resultant products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and H2- reduction (H2-TPR). The presence of H2O2 was found to have profound effect on powder properties such as surface area, crystallite size of the samples. It was also shown that the addition of H2O2 favored the incorporation of Zr4+ into CeO2 lattice, which facilitated the formation of CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution, and enhanced the thermal stability of the samples. OSC and H2-TPR studies indicated that the use of H2O2 enhanced the OSC and redox properties. Catalytic activity tests showed that as a support, the Ce0.65Zr0.35O2 prepared in the presence of H2O2 was more suitable for three-way catalyst. The corresponding Pd-only three-way catalyst demonstrated outstanding performance: wide air to fuel operation window, low light-off and total conversion temperature for the conversion of C3H8, NO and CO. 展开更多
