To avoid the harmful impacts of the circuit parameter variations and the random disturbances on quasi-PID control method, a single neuron is introduced to endow it with self-adaptability. Quasi-PID control method and the single neuron combine with each other perfectly, and their formation is named as single-neuron adaptive quasi-PID control method. Simulation and experimental results show that single-neuron adaptive quasi-PID control method can accurately track both the predictable and the unpredictable waveforms. Quantitative analysis demonstrates that the accuracy of single-neuron adaptive quasi-PID control method is comparable to that of linear power amplifiers (LPAs) and so can fulfill the requirements of some high-accuracy applications, such as protective relay test. Such accuracy is very difficult to be achieved by many modern control methods for converter controls. Compared with other modern control methods, the programming realization of single-neuron adaptive quasi-PID control method is more suitable for real-time applications and realization on low-end microprocessors for its simple structure and lower computational complexity.展开更多

From a specification of a desired output time domain of the plant, a linear optimization system is proposed to adjust the PID controller leading the output signal to stable operation condition with minimum oscillations. The constraint set used in the optimization process is defined by using numerical integration approach. The generated optimization problem is convex and easily solved using an interior point algorithm. Results obtained using familiar plants from literature have shown that the proposed linear programming problem is very effective for tuning PID controllers.展开更多

However, this technology often faces reliability problems due to structural vibration. This study proposes a smart semi-active vibration control system using Magnetorheological (MR) dampers where feedback controllers are optimized with nature-inspired algorithms. Proportional integral derivative (PID) and Proportional integral (PI) controllers are designed to achieve the optimal desired force and current input for MR the damper. PID control parameters are optimized using an Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. The eff ectiveness of the ACO algorithm is validated by comparing its performance with Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The placement of the MR damper on the tower is also investigated to ensure structural balance and optimal desired force from the MR damper. The simulation results show that the proposed semi-active PID-ACO control strategy can signifi cantly reduce vibration on the wind turbine tower under diff erent frequencies (i.e., 67%, 73%, 79% and 34.4% at 2 Hz, 3 Hz, 4.6 Hz and 6 Hz, respectively) and amplitudes (i.e. 50%, 58% and 67% for 50 N, 80 N, and 100 N, respectively). In this study, the simulation model is validated with an experimental study in terms of natural frequency, mode shape and uncontrolled response at the 1st mode. The proposed PID-ACO control strategy and optimal MR damper position is also implemented on a lab-scaled wind turbine tower model. The results show that the vibration reduction rate is 66% and 73% in the experimental and simulation study, respectively, at the 1st mode.展开更多

Genetic Algorithm is a probabilistic search algorithm which is substantially used as an optimization technique in power electronics. A bunch of modifications have already been introduced to enhance the performance depending upon the applications. However, in this paper, modified genetic algorithm has been used in order to tune the key parameters in the converter. Hence, an analysis is carried out where the performance of the converter is illustrated in terms of rise time, settling time and percentage of overshoot by deploying GA based PID controller and the overall comparative study is presented. Responses of the overall system are accumulated through rigorous simulation in MATLAB environment.展开更多

Taking time delay of combustion and actuator into account, a simulation model of a PID control system for a turbine engine was developed. A performance index based on the integral of absolute error (IAE) was given as an objective function of optimization. In order to avoid the sensitivity that resulted from the initial values of the simplex search method, the traditional Ziegler-Nichols method was used to tune PID parameters to obtain the initial values at first, then the simplex search method was applied to optimize PID parameters for the turbine engine. Simulation results indicate that the simplex search method is a reasonable and effective method for PID controller parameters tuning and optimization.展开更多
