Hai Wen, economist and vice president of Peking University, has for many years been involved in in-depth investigation and research of China's medical reform, earning a reputation as one of the foremost economists in the field of medical reform. However, in the recent debate on medical reform policy, Hai Wen deliberately decided to keep a low profile. In his view, some of the ideas coming out of academic circles these days are "too short-sighted and political-motivated." During this interview, he talks about this recent round of medical reform debate, its challenges, and prospects for future reform. 展开更多

The paper gives an overview of the Anti-Christian Movement of 1922-1927, focusing on the role of Peking University faculty and students in the first stage of the movement. Statements by some important Peking University intellectuals, such as University President Cai Yuanpei (蔡元培) and Professors Chen Duxiu (陈独秀), Hu Shi (胡适), Zhou Zuoren (周作人), etc. are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to those comments that stand out as against "majority opinion". Neither the Communists nor the Nationalists were key leaders during the first stage of the movement. It was the clash of core Chinese cultural values with those of Christianity and the Chinese desire to industrialize a country overwhelmed by the Western powers that were instrumental in the instigation of the Anti-Christian Movement. 展开更多

Late nineteenth and early twentieth century China faced a grave national crisis resulting from intense foreign pressure and a rigid political system that was incapable of adapting to the challenges of the modern world.China's decline did, however, lead to a wave of nationalism that swept across Chinese society.Set against this backdrop,a new generation of patriotically minded intellectuals, one with relatively broad exposure to Western thinking and academic methods, turned its focus to enlightening the oppressed masses as a means of bringing about national salvation. These intellectuals pursued this forward-looking aim by looking to the past for inspiration.More specifically, they looked to folk culture as a means of connecting with the common people and weaving together a new discourse that promoted national unity.Under these circumstances,a group of professors at Peking University, including Zhou Zuoren,Liu Fu,and Gu Jiegang, began to search for vernacular works in folk culture. This article examines folklore studies at Peking University expanding from folksongs to folk customs and other forms of folk literature. It focuses on early folklorists’activities, folklore organizations, and primary publications.Under the university’s influence, folklore studies appeared in various newspapers and other research institutions in Beijing and Shanghai in rapid succession. 展开更多

Identifying DNA sequence variations is a fundamental step towards deciphering the genetic basis of traits of interest. Here, a total of 20 cultivated and lo wild apples were genotyped using specific-locus ampli- fied fragment sequencing, and 39,635 single nucleotide polymorphisms with no missing genotypes and evenly distributed along the genome were selected to investi- gate patterns of genome-wide genetic variations between cultivated and wild apples. Overall, wild apples displayed higher levels of genetic diversity than culti- vated apples. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) decays were observed quite rapidly in cultivated and wild apples, with an r2-value below 0.2 at 440 and 280 bp, respectively. Moreover, bidirectional gene flow and different distribu- tion patterns of LD blocks were detected betweendomesticated and wild apples. Most LD blocks unique to cultivated apples were located within QTL regions controlling fruit quality, thus suggesting that fruit quality had probably undergone selection during apple domes- tication. The genome of the earliest cultivated apple in China, Nai, was highly similar to that of Malus sieversii, and contained a small portion of genetic material from other wild apple species. This suggested that introgres- sion could have been an important driving force during initial domestication of apple. These findings will facilitate future breeding and genetic dissection of complex traits in apple. 展开更多
