This paper aimed to examine the site dependence and evaluate the methods for site analysis of far-source ground motions. This was achieved through the examination of frequency content estimated by different methods based on strong ground motions recorded at twelve far-source stations in Shandong province during the Wenchuan earthquake. The stations were located in sites with soil profiles ranging from code classes Ⅰ to Ⅲ. Approaches used included the Fourier amplitude spectrum (FAS), the earthquake response spectrum (ERS), the spectral ratio between the horizontal and the vertical components (H/V), the spectral ratio between the spectra at the site and at a reference site (SRRS), and coda wave analysis (CWA). Results showed that major periods of these ground motions obtained by FAS, ERS and H/V ratio methods were all evidently larger than site dominant periods; the periods were also different from each other and mainly reflected the frequency content of long period components. Prominent periods obtained by the SRRS approach neither illuminated the long period aspect nor efficiently determined site features of the motions. The CWA resulted in a period close to site period for stations with good quality recordings. The results obtained in this study will be useful for the evaluation of far-source effect in constructing seismic design spectra and in selecting methods for ground motion site analysis. 展开更多

3D simulation of near-fault strong ground motion: comparison between surface rupture fault and buried fault 被引量:1

In this paper, near-fault strong ground motions caused by a surface rupture fault (SRF) and a buried fault (BF) are numerically simulated and compared by using a time-space-decoupled, explicit finite element method combined with a multi-transmitting formula (MTF) of an artificial boundary. Prior to the comparison, verification of the explicit element method and the MTF is conducted. The comparison results show that the final dislocation of the SRF is larger than the BF for the same stress drop on the fault plane. The maximum final dislocation occurs on the fault upper line for the SRF; however, for the BE the maximum final dislocation is located on the fault central part. Meanwhile, the PGA, PGV and PGD of long period ground motions (≤ 1 Hz) generated by the SRF are much higher than those of the BF in the near-fault region. The peak value of the velocity pulse generated by the SRF is also higher than the BE Furthermore, it is found that in a very narrow region along the fault trace, ground motions caused by the SRF are much higher than by the BF. These results may explain why SRFs almost always cause heavy damage in near-fault regions compared to buried faults. 展开更多

Both the symmetric period n-2 motion and asymmetric one of a one-degree- of-freedom impact oscillator are considered. The theory of bifurcations of the fixed point is applied to such model, and it is proved that the symmetric periodic motion has only pitchfork bifurcation by the analysis of the symmetry of the Poincar6 map. The numerical simulation shows that one symmetric periodic orbit could bifurcate into two antisymmet- ric ones via pitchfork bifurcation. While the control parameter changes continuously, the two antisymmetric periodic orbits will give birth to two synchronous antisymmetric period-doubling sequences, and bring about two antisymmetric chaotic attractors subse- quently. If the symmetric system is transformed into asymmetric one, bifurcations of the asymmetric period n-2 motion can be described by a two-parameter unfolding of cusp, and the pitchfork changes into one unbifurcated branch and one fold branch. 展开更多

Its Poincard mapping equation is established too. Periodic motions of the system and their routes to chaos are also illustrated by numerical simulation. The ranges of the system excited frequency from periodic motions to chaotic motions are obtained. The chaotic motions of the system are shown by di- agrams of Poincarg mapping, phase portraits and diagrams of bifurcation. The chaos controlling methods by the addition of constant load and the addition of phase are dissertated and analyzed numerically by the numerical solu- tion. The chaos of the system is controlled by the two methods. The allowable range controlling variables and the steady orbits of the controlled system are obtained. 展开更多

During slow level flight of a pigeon, a caudal muscle involved in tail movement, the levator caudae pars vertebralis, is activated at a particular phase with the pectoralis wing muscle. Inspired by mechanisms for the control of stability in flying animals, especially the role of the tail in avian flight, we investigated how periodic tail motion linked to motion of the wings affects the longitudinal stability of ornithopter flight. This was achieved by using an integrative ornithopter flight simulator that included aeroelastic behaviour of the flexible wings and tail. Trim flight trajectories of the simulated omithopter model were calculated by time integration of the nonlinear equations of a flexible multi-body dynamics coupled with a semi-empirical flapping-wing and tail aerodynamic models. The unique trim flight characteristics of ornithopter, Limit-Cycle Oscillation, were found under the sets of wingbeat frequency and tail elevation angle, and the appropriate phase angle of tail motion was determined by parameter studies minimizing the amplitude of the oscillations. The numerical simulation results show that tail actuation synchronized with wing motion suppresses the oscillation of body pitch angle over a wide range of wingbeat frequencies. 展开更多

This is the first part of direct numerical simulation(DNS)of double-diffusive convection in a slim rectangular enclosure with horizontal temperature and concentration gradients.We consider the case with the thermal Rayleigh number of 105,the Pradtle number of 1,the Lewis number of 2,the buoyancy ratio of composition to temperature being in the range of[0,1],and height-to-width aspect ration of 4.A new 7thorder upwind compact scheme was developed for approximation of convective terms,and a three-stage third-order Runge-Kutta method was employed for time advancement.Our DNS suggests that with the buoyancy ratio increasing form 0 to 1,the flow of transition is a complex series changing from the steady to periodic,chaotic,periodic,quasi-periodic,and finally back to periodic.There are two types of periodic flow,one is simple periodic flow with single fundamental frequency(FF),and another is complex periodic flow with multiple FFs.This process is illustrated by using time-velocity histories,Fourier frequency spectrum analysis and the phase-space trajectories. 展开更多

The aim of this article is to detect the detachment between the cam and the follower using the largest Lyapunov exponent parameter,the power density function of fast Fourier transform,and Poinarémaps due to the nonlinear dynamics phenomenon of the follower.The detachment between the cam and the follower was investigated for different cam speeds and different internal distances of the follower guide from inside.This study focuses on the use of the cam–follower system with a bionic quadruped robot through a linkage mechanism.Multishock absorber(spring–damper–mass)systems at the very end of the follower were used to improve the dynamic performance and to reduce the detachment between the cam and the follower.The SolidWorks program was used in the numerical solution,while a high‐speed camera at the foreground of the OPTOTRAK 30/20 equipment was used to identify the follower position.The friction and impact were considered between the cam and the follower and between the follower and its guide.In general,when the cam and the follower are in permanent contact,there is no loss in potential energy,and no impact or restitution.The detachment between the cam and the follower increases with increasing coefficient of restitution in the presence of the impact. 展开更多
