Korean pine population strueture in natural Korean pine forest was studied through massive field investigation and indoor analvsis. Small-diameter Korean pines origination, growth charaeter and their roles in stand were discussed from the view of population origination and tree growth. The results show that small-diameter Korean pines origination and growth havc close relations to the overstory canopy structure dynamics and play an important role in the maintenance and development of Korean pine forest. The process from small-diameter trees to dominant canopy is a selfmaintenance phase, with diffieulty, in Korean pine population. To complete this phase, it not only demands some morphological characters and physiological conditions, but severe forest strueture conditions as well. The time for complating this phase needs separation from overstory Korean pines and converge with overstory broad-leaf trees. In vertical space, it needs to fell overstory canopy or reduce the layers of overstory canopy, and in horizontal space it should be separated from Korean pines but accompanied by broad-leaf trees. 展开更多

Monochamus alternatus is the primary carrier of pine wood nematodes, which pose a serious threat to Pinus spp.in many countries.Newly emerging M.alternatus adults feed on heathy host pines, while matured adults transfer to stressed host pines for mating and oviposition.Several odorant-binding proteins(OBPs)of M.alternatus have been proved to aid in the complex process of host location. To clarify the corresponding relations between OBPs and pine volatiles, more OBPs need to be studied. In this research,MaltOBP19 showed a specific expression in the antennae and mouthparts of M.alternatus, and it was marked in 4 types of antenna sensilla by immunolocalization.Fluorescence binding assays demonstrated the high binding affinity of MaltOBP19 with camphene and myrcene in vitro. In Y-tube olfactory experiments,M.alternatus adults were attracted by camphene and RNAi of OBP19 via microinjection significantly decreased their attraction index.Myrcene induced phobotaxis, but RNAi had no significant effect on this behavior.Further,we found that ingesting dsOBP19 produced by a bacteria-expressed system with a newly constructed vector could lead to the knockdown of MaltOBP19.These results suggest that MaltOBP19 may play a role in the process of host conversion via the recognition of camphene, which has been identified to be strongly released in stressed host pines. In addition,it is proved that knockdown of OBP can be achieved by oral administration of bacteria-expressed double-stranded RNA in M.alternatus adults, providing a new perspective in the control of M.alternatus. 展开更多

Needle chlorosis(NC)in Pinus taeda L.systems in Brazil becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation cycles. In a study to identify factors contributing to yellowing needle chorosis(YNC),trees were grown in soils originating from contrasting parent materials, and soils and needles(whole, green and chlorotic portions)from 1-and 2-year-old branches and the first and second needle flush release at four sites with YNC on P.taeda were analyzed for various elements and properties. All soils had very low base levels(Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+)and K^(+))and P,suggesting a possible lack of multiple elements.YNC symptoms started at needle tips, then extended toward the needle base with time.First flush needles had longer portions with YNC than second flush needles did.Needles from the lower crown also had more symptoms along their length than those higher in the canopy.Symptoms were similar to those reported for Mg.In chlorotic portions,Mg and Ca concentrations were well below critical values;in particular,Mg levels were only one third of the critical value of 0.3 g kg^(-1).Collectively,results suggest that Mg deficiency is the primary reason for NC of P.taeda in various parent soils in Brazil. 展开更多

Discerning vulnerability differences among different aged trees to drought-driven growth decline or to mortality is critical to implement age-specific countermeasures for forest management in water-limited areas. An important species for afforestation in dry environments of northern China,Mongolian pine(Pinus sylvestris var.mongolica Litv.)has recently exhibited growth decline and dieback on many sites, particularly pronounced in old-growth plantations. However, changes in response to drought stress by this species with age as well as the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study,tree-ring data and remotely sensed vegetation data were combined to investigate variations in growth at individual tree and stand scales for young(9-13 years)and aging(35-52 years)plantations of Mongolian pine in a water-limited area of northern China.A recent decline in tree-ring width in the older plantation also had lower values in satellited-derived normalized difference vegetation indices and normalized difference water indices relative to the younger plantations. In addition, all measured growth-related metrics were strongly correlated with the self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index during the growing season in the older plantation.Sensitivity of growth to drought of the older plantation might be attributed to more severe hydraulic limitations,as reflected by their lower sapwood-and leaf-specific hydraulic conductivities. Our study presents a comprehensive view on changes of growth with age by integrating multiple methods and provides an explanation from the perspective of plant hydraulics for growth decline with age.The results indicate that old-growth Mongolian pine plantations in water-limited environments may face increased growth declines under the context of climate warming and drying. 展开更多

Over the past decade, the presence of mistletoe(Viscum album ssp.austriacum)in Scots pine stands has increased in many European countries.Understanding the factors that influence the occurrence of mistletoe in stands is key to making appropriate forest management decisions to limit damage and prevent the spread of mistletoe in the future. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the probability of mistletoe occurrence in Scots pine stands in relation to stand-related endogenous factors such as age,top height, and stand density,as well as topographic and edaphic factors. We used unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery from 2,247 stands to detect mistletoe in Scots pine stands, while majority stand and site characteristics were calculated from airborne laser scanning(ALS)data.Information on stand age and site type from the State Forest database were also used.We found that mistletoe infestation in Scots pine stands is influenced by stand and site characteristics. We documented that the densest, tallest, and oldest stands were more susceptible to mistletoe infestation.Site type and specific microsite conditions associated with topography were also important factors driving mistletoe occurrence. In addition, climatic water balance was a significant factor in increasing the probability of mistletoe occurrence, which is important in the context of predicted temperature increases associated with climate change. Our results are important for better understanding patterns of mistletoe infestation and ecosystem functioning under climate change. In an era of climate change and technological development, the use of remote sensing methods to determine the risk of mistletoe infestation can be a very useful tool for managing forest ecosystems to maintain forest sustainability and prevent forest disturbance. 展开更多

Forest management planning often relies on Airborne Laser Scanning(ALS)-based Forest Management Inventories(FMIs)for sustainable and efficient decision-making.Employing the area-based(ABA)approach,these inventories estimate forest characteristics for grid cell areas(pixels),which are then usually summarized at the stand level.Using the ALS-based high-resolution Norwegian Forest Resource Maps(16 m×16 m pixel resolution)alongside with stand-level growth and yield models, this study explores the impact of three levels of pixel aggregation(standlevel,stand-level with species strata, and pixel-level)on projected stand development. The results indicate significant differences in the projected outputs based on the aggregation level.Notably, the most substantial difference in estimated volume occurred between stand-level and pixel-level aggregation, ranging from-301 to+253 m^(3)·ha^(-1)for single stands. The differences were,on average, higher for broadleaves than for spruce and pine dominated stands, and for mixed stands and stands with higher variability than for pure and homogenous stands. In conclusion, this research underscores the critical role of input data resolution in forest planning and management, emphasizing the need for improved data collection practices to ensure sustainable forest management. 展开更多

In recent years, there has been a significant acceleration in the thinning, calving and retreat of the Pine Island Ice Shelf(PIIS).The basal channels, results of enhanced basal melting, have the potential to significantly impact the stability of the PIIS.In this study,we used a variety of remote sensing data, including Landsat,REMA DEM,ICESat-1 and ICESat-2 satellite altimetry observations, and Ice Bridge airborne measurements,to study the spatiotemporal changes in the basal channels from 2003 to 2020 and basal melt rate from 2010 to 2017 of the PIIS under the Eulerian framework. We found that the basal channels are highly developed in the PIIS,with a total length exceeding 450 km.Most of the basal channels are ocean-sourced or groundingline-sourced basal channels, caused by the rapid melting under the ice shelf or near the groundingline.A raised seabed prevented warm water intrusion into the eastern branch of the PIIS,resulting in a lower basal melt rate in that area.In contrast,a deepsea trough facilitates warm seawater into the mainstream and the western branch of the PIIS,resulting in a higher basal melt rate in the main-stream,and the surface elevation changes above the basal channels of the mainstream and western branch are more significant. The El Ni?o event in 2015–2016 possibly slowed down the basal melting of the PIIS by modulating wind field, surface sea temperature and depth seawater temperature.Ocean and atmospheric changes were driven by El Ni?o,which can further explain and confirm the changes in the basal melting of the PIIS. 展开更多

The longleaf pine(Pinus palustris Mill.)ecosystem is an endangered ecosystem in the southeastern USA,and efforts to restore the species are ongoing. However,in recent decades, the region has experienced drastic fluctuations between wet and dry growing season conditions from year to year, and it is not fully understood how these fluctuations have influenced the growth of P.palustris.To address this topic,we cored P.palustris trees in woodlands of southwest Georgia and used dendrochronology techniques to determine how climate fluctuations have influenced the growth and drought resilience of P.palustris.We also cored slash pine(Pinus elliottii Engelm.)trees in the same woodlands to compare growth between species. While P.palustris growth was less impacted by adverse climate conditions compared to P.elliottii, the strength of correlations between P.palustris growth and temperature, precipitation, and Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI)changed over time.In recent decades, climate conditions during the growing season became more influential on P.palustris growth than the previous year's conditions. This is concerning given that drought severity during the growing season has been increasing. Our results also indicate that P.palustris was less resilient to droughts during the 2000s and 2010s than to those of the 1950s.Under this new climate paradigm, our results suggest that P.palustris might be more susceptible to growth reductions and less resistant to droughts than once expected. This work highlights the importance of understanding the impact of novel climate conditions on P.palustris and has implications for restoration efforts, such as using silvicultural treatments that reduce tree vulnerability to drought(e.g.,thinning)and promote other climate-adapted species in mixture with P.palustris. 展开更多

To evaluate the relationships among clones and open pollinated families from the same plus trees and to select elite breeding materials, growth, and wood characteristics of 33-year-old Pinus korainsis clones and families were measured and analyzed. The results show that growth and wood characters varied significantly. The variation due to clonal effects was higher than that of family effects. The ratio of genetic to phenotypic coefficient of variation of clones in growth and wood traits was above 90%,and the repeatability of these characteristics was more than 0.8,whereas the ratio of genetic to phenotypic coefficient of variation of families was above 90%.The broad-sense heritability of all characteristics exceeded 0.4,and the narrow-sense family heritability of growth traits was less than 0.3.Growth characteristics were positively correlated with each other, but most wood properties were weakly correlated in both clones and families.Fiber length and width were positively correlated between clones and families.Using the membership function method, eleven clones and four families were selected as superior material for improved diameter growth and wood production, and two families from clonal and open-pollinated trees showed consistently better performance.Generally, selection of the best clones is an effective alternative to deployment of families as the repeatability estimates from clonal trees were higher than narrow-sense heritability estimates from open pollinated families. The results provide valuable insight for improving P.koraiensis breeding programs and subsequent genetic improvement. 展开更多

A century and a half ago,in the European part of Russia(Moscow),forest scientists established the first long-term observations of forests, many of which are under observation to the present day.In the twentieth century, climate changes and,due to industrial development, forest areas were under air pollution.Based on observations from 157 sites, this study shows that the growth and density of Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)have decreased by the end of the twentieth century. The environment has changed, and the growth and development of plantations has slowed.Pine yields(-34%stand volume)and their life expectancy(on average 50 years)have decreased. These changes are critical for forestry and for the management of forests in urban centers.Due to the decline in growth, ecosystem functions by urban forests has decreased. In order to increase the sustainability of urban forests and the provision of ecosystem services,it is preferable to create multi-species stands with a complex structure. 展开更多

Background:Chinese pine(Pinus tabuliformis Carr.)is one of the major afforestation species in northern China and plays a key role in restoring forest ecosystems and preserving soil and water. However, most Chinese pine plantations are experiencing ecological problems such as the low diversity of understory plants and difficulty in natural regeneration.Thinning has been widely used to maintain and improve a variety of forest ecosystem services from plantations. To date, however, few studies have been conducted to systematically determine the effects of thinning on understory plant diversity and the regeneration of Chinese pine in plantations. Methods:We conducted a literature search, and selected 22 publications covering a total of 83 treatments related to thinning effects on the species richness of understory plants and 15 publications covering a total of 43 treatments related to thinning effects on the regeneration of Chinese pine,in tree plantations of northern China. The data from the literature were synthesized and evaluated with meta-analysis approach to determine the treatment effects. Results:Compared with the control stands, thinning increased the species richness of shrubs and herbs by an average of 25.3%and 26.5%,respectively.While the varying thinning intensities all had significantly positive effects on the species richness of understory plants, only moderate thinning(30%–50%)had a positive effect on the density of regenerating seedlings and saplings of Chinese pine(60.2%).The species richness of understory plants was greatest after 14 years of thinning with an increase of 36.3%,whereas the density of regenerating Chinese pine seedlings and saplings reached a maximum after≥11 years of thinning with an increase of 76.5%,compared to that of the unthinned stands.Thinning in the half-mature plantations had the greatest effects on the understory shrub richness(44.1%)and the density of regenerating Chinese pine seedlings and saplings(86.5%).Both single and multiple thinning were found to significantly promote the species richness of understory plants and the density of regenerating Chinese pine seedlings and saplings, and the positive effects of thinning were greater in areas with a humidity index(HI)<30 than in areas with an HI≥30.In general, age group, planting density and recovery time were prominent factors affecting the species richness of understory plants, whereas the slope,HI and recovery time were the dominant controls of the density of regenerating Chinese pine seedlings and saplings, indicating differential effects of thinning on the species richness of understory plants and the regeneration capacity of Chinese pine in plantations. Conclusion:Thinning appears to be a feasible management measure to improve the understory plant diversity and regeneration capacity of Chinese pine in plantations. We postulate that moderate thinning in half-mature forest stands with an HI<30 can help effectively promote the species diversity of understory plants and the natural regeneration of Chinese pine, thereby maintaining a more resilient stand structure and the development of Chinese pine plantations. 展开更多

Boreal forests commonly suff er from nitrogen defi ciency due to low rate of nitrogen mineralization.Biochar may promote soil organic matter decomposition and accelerate nitrogen mineralization. In this study,Illumina NovaSeq sequencing combined with functional annotation of prokaryotic taxa(FAPROTAX)analysis was used to investigate the eff ect of biochar pyrolysis temperatures, the amount of applied biochar, and the period since the biochar application(2-and 3-year)on soil bacterial communities. The results show that biochar pyrolysis temperatures(500℃ and 650℃)and the amount of applied biochar(0.5 kg m^(−2)and 1.0 kg m^(−2))did not change soil properties.Nevertheless, the interaction of biochar pyrolysis temperature and the amount had signifi cant eff ects on bacterial species richness and evenness(P<0.05).The application of biochar produced at 500℃ had a lower abundance of Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia, while that produced at 650℃ had a higher abundance of Conexibacter and Phenylobacterium. When biochar produced at 650℃ was applied, applying 0.5 kg m^(−2)had a higher abundance of Cyanobacteria,Conexibacter, and Phenylobacterium than that of 1.0 kg m^(−2)(P<0.05).Functionally,the abundance of the aromatic compound degradation group increased with the extension of application time and increase of pyrolysis temperature. The time since application played an important role in the formation of soil bacterial communities and their functional structure.Long-term studies are necessary to understand the consequence of biochar on bacterial communities in boreal forests. 展开更多

Basic wood density is an excellent indicator of quality,it is correlated with numerous physical, physiological and mechanical characteristics of a species and is a good descriptor of wood quality and important indicator of tree performance in community ecology. An accurate method is thus needed to estimate wood density. The standard way is to calculate the ratio of the oven-dried mass of a wood sample divided by its green volume, but wood characteristics within and between growth rings are highly variable;the density can vary in the longitudinal and the radial directions. The present study investigates the longitudinal and radial fl uctuations in the basic density of Abies cephalonica Loud and Pinus halepensis Mill.Four logs were cut from four diff erent trees for each species and 16 discs were formed(two discs from each log,one at the base and one at the top). Each disc was cut into cubes where their distance from the pith was measured and then sorted into 2 cm wide concentric zones. The results revealed a mild decreasing trend in basic density from the foot of the trunk upward for both species. The pith in both species also seems to have a relatively high density, which in the immediate next growth rings decreases only to resume increasing toward the bark. 展开更多

The effects of sulfuric acid-associated mechanical pretreatment on the hydrolysis behavior of pine sawdust were investigated in this study.Sulfuric acid could act as an acidic catalyst to depolymerize holocellulose through cleavage of the glycosidic bonds, the dissociation energies of which were supplied by the impact of a ball on pine sawdust, during milling. The destruction of glycosidic and hydrogen bonds in pine sawdust resulted in a decrease of crystallinity and an increase of water solubility. The sulfuric acid could promote the hydrolysis of holocellulose and its hydrolysis products. It also destroyed the chemical linkages between holocellulose and lignin during ball milling. The cleavage of chemical linkages with holocellulose made lignin more difficult to hydrolyze in subcritical water, and higher activation energy was needed to hydrolyze pretreated pine sawdust at higher reaction temperatures. It also led to the formation of glucose char and aromatic-linked polymer char from the hydrolysis products of holocellulose. 展开更多

Forest fires are frequent under a Mediterranean climate and have shaped the landscape of the region but are currently altered by human action and climate change.Fires have historically conditioned the presence of pine forests, depending on severity and forest regeneration.Regeneration of Mediterranean pine forests is not always successful, and a transition to shrublands or stands of resprouting species can occur, even after reforestation. This study analyses vegetation changes in two Mediterranean pine forests after severe fires and both reforested. The pines had difficulty to regenerate, even despite post-fire reforestation. The problem is the difficulty of young seedlings to survive, possibly due to increased summer drought.Problems are greater in pine species at the limit of their ecological tolerance:Pinus pinea had a much better recovery success while P.sylvestris and P.nigra virtually disappeared.Pinus pinaster had intermediate results but recovery was generally poor.A transition has taken place in many burnt areas to scrubland or to thickets of the resprouting Quercus rotundifolia, although it is not possible to know whether they will evolve into forests or remain in a sub climatic state.Resprouting species may increase fire severity but facilitates post-fire colonisation.Post-fire recovery difficulties are closely linked to issues of natural regeneration.Fire could initiate the disappearance of pine forests, but even in the absence of fire they may disappear in the long-term due to the lack of regeneration.Action is needed to increase the resilience of these forests, ensuring natural regeneration, and incorporating resprouting species in the understorey. 展开更多

Climate-driven changes in the thermal and moisture regimes may variously influence different tree species growth and ranges. We hypothesize that drought resistant Siberian larch(Larix sibirica Ledeb.)and precipitation-sensitive Siberian pine(Pinus sibirica Du Tour)responded differently to climate change along the elevational thermal and precipitation gradients. We studied the influence of air temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and atmospheric drought(indicated by the drought index SPEI)on larch and pine growth along the southward megaslope of the West Sayan Ridge. We found that since 2000 climate change resulted in increasing larch and pine radial growth index(GI)(c.1.5–3times)within treeline(2000–2300 m)and timberline(1900–2000 m)ecotones,i.e.within high precipitation zones.Within the forest-steppe ecotone(1100–1200 m)in which L.sibirica is the only species, larch GI stagnated or even decreased. The total forested area increased since 2000 up to+50%in the high elevations, whereas in the low elevations(<1400 m)area changes were negligible.Within treeline and timberline, trees’GI was stimulated by summer temperature.Meanwhile, temperature increase in early spring reduces GI due to living tissue activation followed by tissue damage by desiccation.Within forest-steppe,larch radial growth was mostly dependent on soil moisture.Warming shifted dependence on moisture to the early dates of the growing period.Acute droughts decreased GI within forest-steppe as well as within treeline, whereas the drought influence on both species within highlands was insignificant.Within forest-steppe seedlings establishment was poor, whereas it was successful within treeline and timberline.Current climate change leads to stagnation or even decrease in Larix sibirica growth in the southern lowland habitat. In combination with poor seedlings establishment, reduced growth threatens the transformation of open lowland forests into forest-steppe and steppe communities.Meanwhile,in the highlands warming facilitated the growth of Siberian larch and pine and the increase of forested area. 展开更多

The basal channel is a detailed morphological feature of the ice shelf caused by uneven basal melting. This kind of specifically morphology is widely distributed in polar ice shelves. It is an important research object of sea-ice interaction and plays a vital role in studying the relationship between the ice sheet/ice shelf and global warming. In this paper,high-resolution remote sensing image and ice penetration data were combined to extract the basal channel of the Pine Island Ice Shelf. The depth variation of Pine Island Ice Shelf in the recent 20 years was analyzed and discussed by using ICESat-1,ICESat-2,and IceBridge data.Combined with relevant marine meteorological elements(sea surface temperature, surface melting days, circumpolar deep water and wind)to analyze the basal channel changes, the redistribution of ocean heat is considered to be the most important factor affecting the evolution and development of the basal channel. 展开更多
