As we know,the Conceptual Metaphor Theory is the part of Cognitive Linguistics,and it is the bridge between metaphor and vocabulary learning.Through the detailed discussion towards the definition of conceptual metaphor,this article analyses how to improve the learners' learning competence by using conceptual metaphor theory that is applied into the practice of teaching Polysemy.

Animal is a necessary concept in every culture, and in order to express this concept, every culture has linguistic forms standing for different animals. Prototypical motivation of polysemy

This paper applies prototype theory to explain the motivation of polysemy. There are mainly 3 types of meaning model of polysemy, namely, radiation, concatenation and integrated model. According to prototype theory, in the semantic category formed by a polysemic word, category members are determined by prototype. They are the result of development from prototype to boundary. Connected by a network of overlapping similarities （i.e., family resemblances）, category members present different degrees of prototypicality, but not all of them can represent the category. Only the prototype can fully embody the category. With the extension of the semantic category, the boundary of the category is fuzzy and begins to intersect another semantic category.

A Qualia Structure Approach to Nominal Polysemy

Nominal polysemy is a ubiquitous phenomenon in natural languages. How to eliminate the ambiguity caused by polysemous nominals is one of the major concerns in semantics. Drawing on Generative Lexicon Theory, this paper addresses the interpretation of nominal polysemy and attempts to reveal the different meanings of a polysemous nominal from four aspects of its qualia structure, namely, constitutive, formal, telic, and agentive. An Analysis of Polysemy in English for Science and Technology Translation

The monosemy term is one of the important features of English for Science and Technology(EST),but in the process of usage,the monosemy will often be changed gradually,and polysemy is an important factor that influences the term’s monosemy.This paper analyzes the internal and external causes of polysemy in EST translation from the perspective of translation practice,and further elaborates on polysemy with specific translation examples.Finally,some preliminary suggestions for the preferred correct meaning are put forward.

A Study of Polysemy Translation in the Inner Canon of Huangdi-Su Wen From the Perspective of Prototype Category Theory

Based on the difficulties of polysemy in translation,this paper explains the rationality of prototype category theory in polysemy translation.Taking Li Zhaoguo’s English version of Su Wen as the research object,it analyzes the polysemy translation of“Jing”,“Zong”,and“Jiu”as examples,and puts forward the translation strategies of polysemy under the guidance of prototype category theory:equivalent substitution between categories,synonymous conversion between categories,transliteration and introspection outside categories,so as to provide reference for the study of polysemy in English translation of texts on traditional Chinese medicine.

A Study of Cognitive Mechanism of Polysemy Word“Star”From the Perspective of Embodied Philosophy

Embodied philosophy see metaphorical and metonymy thinking and language as grounded in the interactions between bodily experience,mind,and world.An important application of embodied philosophy is to explain the cognitive mechanism behind the generation of polysemy in language.As a crucial part of cognitive linguistics,conceptual metaphor and metonymy theory illustrates the progress of human’s cognitive capacities essentially,i.e.from concrete and simple categories to abstract and complex categories.This paper advocates a method of seeking the relation between metonymy and metaphor in generating polysemic words to prove that embodied philosophy lays the philosophical theoretical foundation for language research,including the mechanism and specific methods of adopting this method.By examining the relation between metaphor and cognitive mind supported by embodied philosophy,the traditional view that language is autonomously generated can be eradicated.On the basis of previous researches,this paper adopts the mechanism of a continuum of metaphor and metonymy to illustrate polysemy through a case study of the word“Star”and analyzes the reflection of embodied philosophy in the generation of polysemy.The findings will bring certain advantages to the cognitive study of polysemy,to the research on interaction between metaphor and metonymy,and to the reflection of philosophy in language.

Study on Polysemy of Prepositions from the Perspective of Cognitive Semantics——a Case Study of Preposition On and Over

This thesis aims to distinguish polysemy and homonomy in the diachronic prospective by comparing the definition, cause of formation, analyzing principles of distinction. The study also values the principles in which the limit exists and points out that etymology and sense relations are not the only factors to differentiate polysemy and homonymy of a word.

Visual polysemy and synonymy:toward near-duplicate image retrieval

that are duplicate or near duplicate to a query image.One of the most popular and practical methods in near-duplicate image retrieval is based on bag-of-words(BoW)model.However,the fundamental deficiency of current BoW method is the gap between visual word and image’s semantic meaning.Similar problem also plagues existing text retrieval.A prevalent method against such issue in text retrieval is to eliminate text synonymy and polysemy and therefore improve the whole performance.Our proposed approach borrows ideas from text retrieval and tries to overcome these deficiencies of BoW model by treating the semantic gap problem as visual synonymy and polysemy issues.We use visual synonymy in a very general sense to describe the fact that there are many different visual words referring to the same visual meaning.By visual polysemy,we refer to the general fact that most visual words have more than one distinct meaning.To eliminate visual synonymy,we present an extended similarity function to implicitly extend query visual words.To eliminate visual polysemy,we use visual pattern and prove that the most efficient way of using visual pattern is merging visual word vector together with visual pattern vector and obtain the similarity score by cosine function.In addition,we observe that there is a high possibility that duplicates visual words occur in an adjacent area.Therefore,we modify traditional Apriori algorithm to mine quantitative pattern that can be defined as patterns containing duplicate items.Experiments prove quantitative patterns improving mean average precision(MAP)significantly.

Photographic Image: Thematization of Its Discourses

This paper deals with thematization as a fundamental step towards the determination of photography image discourses in order to index them. It deals with questions related to photographic reality, polysemy, denotation and connotation, whose comprehension is fundamentally important for the interpretation of photography discourses. It also approaches aspects that have influenced photography analysis towards its thematization, such as the characterization of an image bank, the functions performed by photos, as well as technical and visual quality.
