The Alienation of Nature in Emily Dickinson’s Poems through the Prism of Taoism

In the poems created by the renowned American poet Emily Dickinson,those related to nature constitute a considerable proportion.However,Dickinson’s attitude toward nature is,in fact,contradictory.On the one hand,Dickinson perceives nature as gentle and kind,akin to a mother.Nature is regarded as“heaven”and embodies harmony.On the other hand,nature possesses its own operational principles and harbors inherent cruelty.According to Dickinson,humans should refrain from excessive interference in the natural order.This article attempts to analyze the similarities in attitude towards nature between Dickinson’s poetry and Taoist philosophy.

The Influences of Taoism on Landscape Architecture

Based on interpretation of Dao De Jing(a book written by LAO Zi),the connotation of "Tao" had been analyzed and it emphasized that Taoism is the most basic and eternal universal law transcending physical existence and the origin of all changes.It pointed out that garden art was integrated art of time and space,Taoism had made profound effect on Chinese landscape art,and its philosophical thought was the important theoretical support for garden artistic creation.On this basis,it laid stress on great influence on artistic creation of Chinese garden produced by Taoist dialectical thoughts and Taoist thoughts such as "Taoism following nature","unity between heaven and human",and "immortal belief";and found ideological source for Chinese landscape art to pursue artistic spirit of natural beauty,uphold designing principle of harmonious coexistence between human and nature,and take supernatural being and fairyland legend as the design version.It also analyzed that Taoist philosophical thought happened to coincide with contrast methods of garden art involving tangibility and intangibility,falsehood and reality,internality and externality,bigness and smallness,highness and lowness,rising and falling,sparseness and denseness,exposedness and unexposedness,and so on.It highlighted artistic charm of "prospect generating beyond images" as the core connotation of Chinese classical garden art;emphasized frequently-used me-thods for garden spatial organization,spatial guidance and indication,layout pattern,arrangement of scenic spots and disposition of landscaping plants which were produced under the influence of Taoism,making Chinese garden be of more implicitness,interestingness and orient glamour.

Reasons of Taoism in Robert Bly's Poetry

Bly's preference of Taoist thoughts to Western philosophy and ideology in his poetry has its deeper reasons. It is his secluded life attitude and his poetics construction that promote him to learn from the ancient Chinese poetry which contains adequate Taoist ideas.

Ecotourism and environmental ethics: Based on Chinese Confucianism and Taoism philosophy

Based on traditional Chinese philosophy, we study the modern eco-tourism and environmental ethics and its implications. Firstly, the eco-tourism and environmental ethics were defi ned; Secondly, the Chinese philosophy of Confucianism and Taoism related to the concept of eco-tourism and environmental ethics were reviewed; Finally, we provide implications to the practitioners and experts of environment in China.

Features of Gardens of Shu Kingdom in Pre-Qin Period of China

After the illustration of Shu Kingdom in pre-Qin period, the origin of Sichuan gardens has been discussed. Through the research on relevant materials of old Shu Kingdom, and by comparing with the archaeological discovery of Yangzi Mountain Terrace, the paper has proposed that the origin of Sichuan gardens can trace back to gardens in the period of Duyu King. It is considered that gardens in pre-Qin period are dominated by imperial gardens, emperors' or aristocratic cemeteries, among which the historical function and features of Yangzi Mountain Garden, Nanzhong Garden and Wudan Mountain Cemetery have been introduced. On this basis, characteristics of Sichuan gardens in pre-Qin period have been concluded, and the grand manner manifested through "Great Stone Worship" in ancient Shu Kingdom has been highlighted.

Taoism in Lee Ang’s Films

Taoism is one of the oldest orient philosophies. Taoism advocates the respects for individual differences and the diversity of life in both human beings and nature from its origin till now. This immemorial and mysterious oriental philosophy seems hardly to be presented in the films. However, Lee Ang did quite well. To some extent, Ang is the best oriental storyteller in western film industry. In this essay, I will choose three of Ang’s Films to explain how Taoism exists in these works.

Since ancient times,agricultural religion has been infiltrated into all aspects of economic,political and social life in China. Using rich historical data such as archeology,anthropology and ethnology,this paper discussed the historical process of agricultural religion in the pre-Qin period from animal worship to agricultural worship. It also discussed the agricultural objects,land,celestial nature,and labor ghosts.Finally,it revealed the inevitable trend of combination of social sacrificing activities.

The History of Xu-style Garden in the Pre-Qin Period

Based on ancient documents and archaeology,this paper studied the general situation and landscape conditions of ancient Xuzhou in the pre-Qin period,including regional changes,economic development,and gardening activities and characteristics of Xu-style gardens.The study found that ancient Xuzhou had been inhabited by human beings as early as 6,000 years ago,and villages and kingdoms had gradually formed.When Yu the Great ruled the country(also known as Jiuzhou,or nine states),Xu was one of the nine states,known as Xuzhou.Local natural geographical environment was superior,the transportation was convenient,economy and society was relatively developed,thus by the Zhou Dynasty,ancient Xuzhou region had already had a large number of early garden forms.This period was the incubation period of Xu-style garden.

Inheritance and Development of Three Pre-Qin Classics of Confucianism——An Application of Topic Modeling in Classical Chinese Text Analysis

The Analects, Mengzi and Xunzi are the top-three classical works of pre-Qin Confucianism, which epitomized thoughts and ideas of Confucius, Mencius and XunKuang1. There have been lots of spirited and in-depth discussions on their ideological inheritance and development from all kinds of academics. This paper tries to cast a new light on these discussions through “machine reading2”.

The Stigmatization of Taoism and Its Destigmatizing Process in Modern China

Taoism has generally been discriminated by intellectuals and considered to be the root of many negative factors in Chinese society in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, especially during the New Culture Movement(around the time of the May 4 th movement in 1919). This discrimination encompasses both the conservation of the traditional scholarofficials’ conception and the launch of the Chinese Renaissance by the intellectuals of the New Culture. However, there is now a trend toward Taoism being the seed of native science in China since the 1930 s. This trend has started to destigmatize Taoism. In fact, the image of Taoism, either negative or positive, is shaped by science. The case study presented here helps us to better understand the religious views in the ideology of modern China and remind us that the image of Taoism from the perspective of science history is not its true color. What is more, two levels of "science view" have been formed in modern China: at the level of ideological structure, the traditional principle of "craft at climax can be closer to the Tao" and at the level of concrete connotation, the real meaning of either Tao or craft has undergone a rudimental change.

The pre-qin Scholars’views on human nature could be divided into two types:malleable human nature and immalleable human nature.Based on the theory of the malleability of human nature,Confucianism formed an educational concept aiming at shaping the ideal personality of Confucianism.The theory of immutability of human nature has become the root of the two distinct educational concepts of Taoism,which advocates letting nature take its course,and Taoism,which aims at reforming human behavior.Either idea has its reasonableness.All of these have a very important impact on our higher education today.
