During the late 18th and early 19th centuries,a series of conflicts erupted in the Caribbean, leading to the spread of yellow fever to North America and Europe. This yellow fever epidemic was aggravated by war, migration, trade, and other human behaviors, resulting in a decadelong transatlantic pandemic.Groups of physicians in Europe and the United States established a transatlantic network focused on epidemic prevention,to investigate the pathology, causes, and treatments of yellow fever Subsequently, some consular officers were also concerned about the yellow fever epidemic, which led to the expansion of this network. The formation and expansion of the transatlantic knowledge network profoundly demonstrated the spirit of transnationalism and promotes progress in international public health. It sets a precedent for international health cooperation. However, this network was dominated by the so-called"white elite",with European and American countries holding the knowledge hegemony,it had a clear racist and colonialism feature. 展开更多

Background:The awareness, treatment and prevention of chronic diseases are generally poor among the elderly population of China, whereas the prevention and control of chronic diseases in elderly veteran communities have been ongoing for more than 30 years. Therefore, investigating the awareness status of chronic disabling neurological diseases (CDND) and common chronic diseases (CCD) among elderly veterans may provide references for related programs among the elderly in the general population. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted among veterans ≥60 years old in veteran communities in Beijing. The awareness of preventive strategies against dementia,Alzheimer's disease (AD),Parkinson's disease (PD),sleep disorders, cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and CCD such as hypertension, and the approaches used to access this information, including media, word of mouth (verbal communication among the elderly) and health care professionals, were investigated via face-to-face interviews. Results:The awareness rates for CCD and CVD were approximately 100%,but that forAD was the lowest at 〈10%.The awareness rates for sleep disorders,PD and dementia, were 51.0-89.4%.Media was the most commonly selected mode of communication by which veterans acquired knowledge about CCD and CVD.Media was used by approximately 80% of veterans. Both health care professionals and word of mouth were used by approximately 50% of veterans. With respect to the source of information about CDND excluding AD,the rates of the use of health care professionals, word of mouth and media were 10.6-28.2%,56.5-76.5%,and approximately 50%,respectively.Conclusions:The awareness of CDND among elderly veterans was significantly lower than that of CCD.More information about CDND should be disseminated by health care professionals.Appropriate guidance will promote the rapid and extensive dissemination of information about the prevention of CDND by media and word-of-mouth peer education. 展开更多

Background:This study was aimed to investigate whether patients with epilepsy(PWE)have higher depression and anxiety levels than the normal population in low-risk areas for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)in the northern part of Guizhou Province,China, during the COVID-19 epidemic,to evaluate their knowledge on COVID-19,and to analyze related factors for the psychological distress of PWE at this special time. Methods:The survey was conducted online from February 28,2020 to March 7,2020 via a questionnaire.PWE from the outpatient clinic of epilepsy of the Aflited Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, and healthy people matched for age and sex, participated in this study.Mental health was assessed via a generalized anxiety self-rating scale(GAD-7)and the self-rating depression scale(PHQ-9).The knowledge of COVID-19 in both groups was investigated. Results:There were no significant differences in the general demographics between the PWE and healthy control groups. The scores of PHQ-9(P<0.01)and GAD-7(P<0.001)were higher in the PWE group than in the healthy group. There was a signifcant difference in the proportions of respondents with different severities of depression and anxi-ety,between the two groups, which revealed significantly higher degree of depression and anxiety in PWE than in healthy people(P=0,P=0).Overwhelming awareness and stressful concerns for the pandemic and female patients with epilepsy were key factors that affect the level of anxiety and depression in PWE.Further, the PWE had less accu-rate knowledge of COVID-19 than healthy people(P<0.001).There was no statistically signifcant difference between the two groups in the knowledge of virus transmission route, incubation period, susceptible population,transmis-sion speed, clinical characteristics, and isolation measures on COVID-19(P>0.05).PWE knew less about some of the prevention and control measures of COVID-19 than healthy people. Conclusions:During the COVID-19 epidemic, excessive attention to the epidemic and the female sex are factors associated with anxiety and depression in PWE,even in low-risk areas. 展开更多
