The first section of this essay deals with an iconographical analysis of Lavinia Fontana’s(1552-1614)Prudence or Personification of Wisdom of 1590,while the second part provides an iconological interpretation,demonstrating Fontana’s application of emblematic significations.This painting is presently on display at the Galerie Maison d’Art in Monte Carlo.At this time there is lack of knowledge about the patronage of this commission,except from the art gallery’s records showing that it acquired the painting from a private collection in New York.

Creating Character： Aristotle on Habituation, the Cognitive Power of Emotion, and the Role of Prudence

For Aristotle creating a virtuous character means habituating a stable emotional state or disposition （hex＆）, which enables the agent to feel and act rightly, and to have the intellectual virtue prudence （phron^sis） complete this habituation. But because feeling or emotion （pathos） is a passive state, it is not clear in what way we can make ourselves be affected correctly. This paper tries to solve this apparent difficulty by emphasizing the cognitive power of emotion. It also examines the role of prudence in the acquisition of ethical virtue, supporting an anti-intellectualist understanding of practical motivation.

Review of International Accounting Standards Board （IASB） Proposed New Conceptual Framework： Discussion Paper （DP/2013/1）

The International Accounting Standards Board （IASB） is one of the largest independent accounting standard setters whose publications, International Financial Reporting Standards （IFRSs）, have revolutionalized the accounting profession, investors, finance providers, and the entire accounting information stakeholder community. The conceptual frameworks are the theoretical accounting bases that are constituted by a set of principles that underlie as a bedrock foundation cornerstone for the development and updating of IFRSs. The existing conceptual frameworks were issued by IASB in 2010, after long years of protracted and wide consultation and joint project with the biggest American standard setter Financial Accounting Standards Board （FASB）. In year 2013, the IASB embarked on a solo project to update the conceptual framework and issued a discussion paper （DP/2013/1） to its users and stakeholder community for comments. The methodology used in this study of an extensive review of literature （secondary/primary） from the discussion paper, existing conceptual framework, and comment letters from investors, accounting, insurance, and international audit firms has been manipulated. The findings revealed that the existing conceptual framework has opposing objectives especially that of decision usefulness （future-oriented information） and concepts of ＂prudence and stewardship/accountability＂, which are deeply embedded within the framework as subsumed, but their prominence has been overshadowed and watered down by not identifying them as objectives. The finding also revealed that almost all public accounting and audit firms are advocating not only for the reinstatement of the ＂prudence and stewardship/accountability＂ but also for a clear definition of recognition, de-recognition, and measurement of statement of financial position elements （assets and liabilities） and also elements of the comprehensive income statement （revenues and expenses）, which have seriously compromised investors, public accounting profession, learning/teaching of a framework-based understanding, and the entire IFRS user stakeholder community. A recommendation for further studying the abandoned joint IASB/FASB project should be investigated in the best interest of international accounting standards convergence.

Precautionary Effort Investment under Cross Risk Aversion

This paper deals with the effort problem under multiple risks in bivariate utility setting. We identify preference conditions to insure positive or negative effect of a background variable uncertainty on effort in the presence of other risks. We allow for the simultaneous presence of wealth and background variable uncertainties. We investigate the joint effect of two-source uncertainties on effort when two risks are either small or positive quadrant dependent. Our work extends the previous model of effort to bivariate utility framework and presents new insights into the issue of optimal effort under uncertainty.

How the Investor’s Risk Preferences Influence the Optimal Allocation in a Credibilistic Portfolio Problem

A classical portfolio theory deals with finding the optimal proportion in which an agent invests a wealth in a risk-free asset and a probabilistic risky asset. Formulating and solving the problem depend on how the risk is represented and how, combined with the utility function defines a notion of expected utility. In this paper the risk is a fuzzy variable and the notion of expected utility is defined in the setting of Liu’s credibility theory. Thus, the portfolio choice problem is formulated as an optimization problem in which the objective function is a credibilistic expected utility. Different approximation calculation formulas for the optimal allocation of the credibilistic risky asset are proved. These formulas contain two types of parameters: Various credibilistic moments associated with fuzzy variables(expected value, variance, skewness and kurtosis) and the risk aversion, prudence and temperance indicators of the utility function.

Priority Setting in Health Care with Disease and Treatment Risks

This paper deals with the issue of priority setting in health care under uncertainties about the severity of the illness and the effectiveness of medical treatment. We examine the effect of a disease uncertainty(a treatment uncertainty) on the allocation of health care resources in the presence of a treatment risk(a disease risk) and identify preference conditions under which the social planner allocates more resources to higher risk population. We allow for the simultaneous presence of two risks and investigate the joint effect of two-source uncertainties on health care allocation when the two risks are either small or positively quadrant dependent. The effect of inequality aversion on health care allocation is also analyzed by introducing an equity weighting function. Our work extends the previous model of health care priority to two-risk framework and provides new insights into the problem of health care decision making under uncertainty.
