Making use of mechanical analysis method, by acting couples along the interior edges with suitable evaluations, the deflection surface is divided into piecewise form, therefore, the relation between a class of bivariate splines on rectangular partition and the pure bending of thin plate is established. In addition, the interpretation of smoothing cofactor and conformality condition from the mechanical point of view is given. Furthermore, by introducing twisting moments, the mechanical background of any spline belong to the above space is set up.展开更多

Theoretical estimation based on the uniform ovalization model and local collapse model proposed in the paper is incorporated to give several simple formulations with reasonable accuracy for determining the relationship between bending moment (M) and curvature (kappa) in the purely bended pipes. Attention is focused on the critical curvature associated with maximum resistant moment and the maximum change in the original diameter before the end of uniform ovalization stage as well as the local collapse behaviour. Some comparisons between analytical results and experimental results are made in order to examine the theory.展开更多

Suppose that the material is elastically isotropic, ideally elastic-plastic and its elastic modulus and yield limit vary radially according to exponential functions. Closed-form solutions to the stresses and radial displacement in both purely elastic stress state and partially plastic stress state are presented. Numerical examples reveal the distinct characteristics of elastoplastic bending of a curved beam composed of inhomogeneous materials. Due to the inhomogeneity of materials, the bearing capac- ity of the curved beam can be improved greatly and the initial yield mode can also be dominated. Closed-form solutions presented here can serve as benchmark results for evaluating numerical solutions.展开更多

The bellows was divided into protruding sections, concave sections and ring plates for the calculation that the general solution (Ⅰ) with its reduced form to ring plates were used respectively, but the continuity of the surface stresses and the meridian rotations at each joint of the sections were entirely satisfied. The present results were compared with those of the slender ring shell solution proposed earlier by the authors, the standards of the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA), the experiment and the finite element method. It is shown that the governing equation and the general solution (Ⅰ) are very effective.展开更多

Besides the twisting, elementary morphing models of a bat wing are proposed, including wing-bending in the spanwise direction,wing-cambering in the chordwise direction, and wing area-changing. A plate of aspect ratio 3 is used to model a bat wing, and a three-dimensional unsteady panel method is used to predict the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the cambering model has great positive influence on the lift, followed by the area-changing model and then the bending model. Further study indicates that the vortex control is a main mechanism to produce high aerodynamic forces. The mechanisms of aerodynamic force enhancement are asymmetry of the cambered wing and amplification effects of wing area-changing and wing bending. Lift and thrust are generated mainly during downstroke, and they are almost negligible during upstroke by the integrated morphing model-wing.展开更多
