An Analysis of the Research Trends in Blended Learning Methods in Teaching College English Reading Courses

Curtis J.Bonk defined blended learning as a combination of face-to-face and computer-assisted online learning instruction since it was gradually formed after the emergence of the Internet[1,2].Breen pointed out that blended learning is a learning method that combines online and offline learning activities and resources[3].The blended learning approach is popular in school and e-learning.Moreover,it is one of the important trends in promoting higher education reform in the coming years.Therefore,it has attracted the attention of international researchers[4].In this paper,42 articles in Scopus(established by international institutions)and 30 articles in CNKI(found by Chinese mainland institutions)on the query of“college English reading blended learning”in the field of education were analyzed.Furthermore,CiteSpace software was used to analyze the research hotspots and trends with the keyword clusters and citations that occurred in the last two decades(1999 to 2022)to foresee future research prospects.

On the Reform of Vocabulary Teaching in College English Reading Course

Vocabulary is the basis of English learning.The mastery of vocabulary directly affects the development of students’listening,speaking,reading,writing,translation,and other abilities.Therefore,vocabulary teaching plays an important role in English teaching.As a basic course for College English majors,one of the teaching objectives of reading course is to help students expand their vocabulary,enhance their sense of English language,and increase their cultural background knowledge of English speaking countries.In the process of extensive reading teaching,teachers should not be limited to the traditional vocabulary teaching mode,but should guide students to memorize words quickly and efficiently through flexible teaching methods,expand vocabulary,and at the same time,teachers should pay attention to the introduction of cultural knowledge in the process of vocabulary explanation,so as to help students understand the meaning more deeply and thoroughly.

AN INITIAL ATTEMPT TO APPLY THE COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH TO THE INTENSIVE READING COURSE:An overall evaluation of the teaching practice on the Nankai University HTTC

IntroductionIn China,the significance of intensive reading in language learning and teaching is known to allconcerned.For a long period of time,roughly halfa century,there have been no great changes in the wayintensive reading is taught.As a result some schools and colleges continue to place too much emphasis onusage rather than use.The teacher spends a great deal of time explaining language points,paraphrasingdifficult sentence structures,and introducing the author’s background.Students,on the other hand,areaccustomed to accepting whatever is presented to them passively.

WARM-UP ACTIVITIES. MAKING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE INTENSIVE READING COURSE

This paper points out the problems existing in the Intensive Reading Course classrooms conducted under the teacher-centred pedagogy and proposes that varied warm-up activities be applied at the beginning of every class. The purpose is to motivate the students to be active participants in class, provoke communication at different levels, and foster the top-down reading schema, all of which serve to enable the students to become effective readers. The theoretical and applicative considerations of the warm-up activities are discussed in detail in the paper.

Validity Study on the Test Paper of the Academic English Reading and Writing Course

The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai.The validity is mainly analyzed from these three aspects:the content and construct validity,the reaction process,and the internal structure of the test paper.And the principles of language assessment in the design of the test paper are given in this study.The validity study was also conducted in a class with 42 freshmen,and the scores of them were analyzed through the internal correlation coefficient from Statistic Package for Social Science(SPSS)25.0.Finally,the validity of the test paper is concluded.

The Practice of ＂Flipped classroom＂ in the Reading and Writing Course of College English

The reform of college English should focus on the ways to improve the practicing ability. This ability should be based on the improvement of students, which is the fundamental aim of reform on the college English. In order to cope with this problem, ＂flipped classroom＂has many advantages. By Giving definitions to the ＂flipped classroom＂, this dissertation analyzed the differences between the regular class and the ＂flipped classroom＂ and carried out a new way to improve the reading and writing course： we can take advantage of multimedia and new internet technology.
