The TPH of the soil was determined using GC analyzer after solvent extraction was carried out using hexane/dichloromethane mixture. Three batches of treatment were performed on the samples at every interval of eight weeks for a duration of six months. The result obtained was analyzed using a two-way ANOVA factorial experimental design to test the significance of the various sources of variation. From the result obtained, source of variation for sample and interactions were non-significantly different from each other which means that irrespective of the number of samples analyzed or the combination of both samples and batches of treatment, they will still not be significantly different from each other. The source of variation for batch and replications were significantly different from each other and this means that irrespective of the batches of treatment applied or the number of replications (methods of treatment used), they will always be significantly different from each other. The individual comparison of each sample showed that the efficiency of the Remedial Nutrient Solution method was better than Enhanced Natural Attenuation method.展开更多

Most of these chemicals are exposed into the natural environment during the life cycles of their production, transportation, storage, consumption, and as by-products and wastes. The rising rates of cancer, obesity, and infertility suggests that there are compounds recently introduced to the environment that have altered the chemistry of the human body, and it is only with the monitoring of xenobiotics such as Bisphenol A (BPA), nonyphenols, estrogen (natural and synthetic) and other endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) that patterns and links could be drawn. This paper investigates the safety, environmental and health (SHE) impacts caused by BPA, nonyphenols and estrogens. Derived from petroleum, bisphenol A is used in manufacturing plastic consumer products, including certain water bottles, in dental sealants for children's teeth, and in resins used to line tin cans. Nonyphenol is one of the by-products of alkylphenolpolyethoxilates which is widely used as nonionic surfactants. Synthetic estrogen used for birth control pills as well as natural estrogen excreted by women through urine enters the domestic wastewater streams. These compounds are considered to be EDCs and have severe SHE concerns. In this paper, the challenges of entry of these compounds (xenobiotics) into nature, health and environmental issues and their remediation have been reviewed in detail.展开更多

The results showed that arsenic plume was to reach the pumping well in the downstream farmland after eight years, and the longest lateral and longitudinal distance of arsenic plume was to reach 200 m and 260 m, respectively. But the area of high concentration region of arsenic plume was not to obviously increase from eight years to ten years and the plume was to spread to the downstream river and the farmland region after 20 years; while the landfill's ground was hardened, the plume was not to reach the downstream farmland region after eight years; when the pumping well was installed in the plume downstream and discharge rate was 200m3/d, the plume was to be effectively restrained; for leakage-proof barriers, it might effectively protect the groundwater of sensitive objects within an extent time range. But for the continuous point source, the plume was still to circle the leakage-proof barrier; when discharge rate of drainage ditches was 170.26 m3/d, the plume was effectively controlled; the comprehensive method combining ground-harden with drainage ditches could get the best effect in controlling contaminant diffusion, and the discharge rate was to be reduced to 111.43 m3/d. Therefore, the comprehensive remedial alternative combining ground-harden with drainage ditch will be recommended for preventing ground-water contamination when leachate leakage has happened in unregulated landfills.展开更多

文摘A fault-tolerant permanent-magnet vernier(FT-PMV)machine incorporates the merits of high fault-tolerant capability and high torque density. In this paper,a remedial phase-angle control(RPAC)strategy is proposed for a five-phase FT-PMV machine with short-circuit fault.Firstly, the proposed strategy can reduce the amount of unknown quantities by structuring the phase-angles of the normal phases. It can simplify the calculation of the remedial currents. Then,in order to obtain the desired torque, only the amplitudes of the remedial currents need to be calculated.Based on the principle of instantaneous electrical input power and mechanical output power balance condition, the real components are used to maintain the torque capability, while the reactive components are limited zero to minimize the torque ripple. Both simulations and experiments are presented to verify the proposed RPAC strategy.
文摘With the use of over 100,000 industrially produced chemicals, there have been several concerns on human health and environment. In this paper, the challenges of entry of these compounds (xenobiotics) into nature, health and environmental issues and their remediation have been reviewed in detail.

The teaching approach based on learning cycle is described giving examples of different teaching elements applied in particular quadrants of the learning cycle. The attitude of students and their different approaches to, learning are presented and discussed in detail. The results presented cover different aspects of the course delivery and students' perception. The results include students' statistics with respect to their registration and previous history related to the course, their motivatiion, assessment and satisfaction with the approach applied. This initial introduction of cooperative activities into the remedial Dynamics class can be assessed as a positive step in increasing student understanding and performance in the course. The students' positive reception of the non-traditional teaching method and their overall improved performance seem to confirm the advantages of collaborative leaming. In terms of the final grades, the results of the experiment were not as good as expected. However, the application of 4MAT learning system which exposed students to a variety of diverse learning styles improved the quality of education. The positive aspect of the experiment was the attitude of students and their acceptance of the new mode of course delivery. In conclusion collaborative learning could be extended beyond remedial groups to normal student classes.
文摘Road constructing in Ethiopia is increasingly in demand to meet its medium and long term development programs. Most internal roads of Oromia city/town are cobblestone and gravel. Some portions along the alignment proposed and existing roads traversed low resistance of the subgrade that affect the stability of the upper layers of cobblestones.Structural failure is observed on cobblestone roads, and it would be constructed with good quality or low quality of materials.Nekemte Cobblestones Projects have been started in 2014 widely which were filled in most areas today as we observed that needs to be addressed and a corresponding remedial measures must be drawn.A possible counteractive actions had been ordered for every observed destroyed to achieve the standard road situation of the study zone.An evaluation was made use observation, interviews, laboratory test and field test to govern an appropriateness of cobblestones. The lie beneath soil used for bottom layers of road structure based on standard of Ethiopian Road Authority(ERA)low volume road standards. Therefore, result from the field test and laboratory test shown, causes of cobblestone road failures of Nekemte street segment were mostly because of the construction steps/sequence,quality of materials, road construction time, absence of appropriate design, quality supervisor, absences of drainage structures, lack of highly compaction, lack of accurately fill fine aggregate and suddenly high loads vehicle applied on cobblestone road.

文摘Based on hydro-geological of Qilongcun landfill, the transportation mathematical model of leachat was established. The boundaries conditions and replenishment ofmodel were determined. The leachate COD density and the water level were simulated, and the model was identified, and then the right model was defined. The right model was used to simulate leachate COD density in the interior, exterior, and peripheral of landfill. The results show that the COD densities are not high. The pollution is slight in the interior of landfill and is little in the exterior of landfill. They are proving the overburden on top of landfill and drain around the landfill is right. The max. density on the south of landfill shows it is scientific that the cisterns are building on the south of landfill. The paper shows the remediation scheme is feasible.
文摘Groundwater pollution by fluoride is one of the prime concerns of the world population due to its toxicity, which results in adverse health impacts. In this paper,we review the current scenario of the fluoride contamination of groundwater in various countries across the globe and its impact on human health.During the last decade, several newly affected regions have been reported all over the world, with more than 100 countries affected by fluoride contamination in groundwater(concentration exceeding the acceptable limit of 1.5 mg/L defined by the World Health Organization).Fluoride poisoning is mainly due to the unsupervised ingestion of products for dental and oral hygiene and over-fluoridated drinking water. It is estimated that more than 200 million people from different countries are affected by fluoriderelated groundwater issues and health problems. The highest among these are from the countries in Africa(38),Asia(28),and Europe(24),followed by countries like South America(5),North America(3),and Australia(2).The source of fluoride in drinking water is primarily geogenic, together with forage, grasses and grains, tea, and anthropogenic sources. These countries affected were correlated with climatic zones and geological factors to gain insights into geospatial relations. Our analyses show that most of the fluoride pollution-prone zones are located in high-grade metamorphic terranes with granitoid or alkaline intrusions, geothermal hot springs, and volcanic regions with arid or semi-arid climatic conditions. This study also finds that children across the globe are more vulnerable than adults to fluoride contamination. The review finds that, although there are efficient fluoride removal techniques, including filters with next-generation nanomaterials,to date, there has not been a single technique developed that can claim to be a practically robust solution for fluoride removal from drinking water. Therefore,we suggest developing next-generation filters that can retain essential minerals in water and remove only harmful ones and selecting purification technologies according to need, climate, geology, and geographic location. The findings from our review would help policymakers take effective and sustainable measures for safe water supply in the affected areas.Within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),particularly SDG 3(Good Health and Well-being)and SDG 6(Clean Water and Sanitation),this study emphasizes the critical role of fluoride as a key indicator. It underscores the imperative of addressing elevated fluoride levels in drinking water, particularly in African and Asian countries,to achieve the overarching objective of universal and equitable access to safe, affordable, and uncontaminated drinking water for global society by the targeted year of 2030.
文摘A groundwater flow and solute transport model was developed using Visual Modflow for forecasting contaminant transport and assessing effects of remedial alternatives based on a case study of an unregulated landfill leachate-contaminated groundwater in eastern China. Therefore, the comprehensive remedial alternative combining ground-harden with drainage ditch will be recommended for preventing ground-water contamination when leachate leakage has happened in unregulated landfills.
文摘Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)have been extensively considered as one of the most promising types of porous and crystalline organic-inorganic materials, thanks to their large specific surface area, high porosity, tailorable structures and compositions, diverse functionalities, and well-controlled pore/size distribution. However, most developed MOFs are in powder forms, which still have some technical challenges, including abrasion, dustiness, low packing densities,clogging,mass/heat transfer limitation, environmental pollution, and mechanical instability during the packing process, that restrict their applicability in industrial applications. Therefore,in recent years, attention has focused on techniques to convert MOF powders into macroscopic materials like beads,membranes,monoliths,gel/sponges,and nanofibers to overcome these challenges.Three-dimensional(3D)printing technology has achieved much interest because it can produce many high-resolution macroscopic frameworks with complex shapes and geometries from digital models. Therefore, this review summarizes the combination of different 3D printing strategies with MOFs and MOF-based materials for fabricating 3D-printed MOF monoliths and their environmental applications, emphasizing water treatment and gas adsorption/separation applications.Herein, the various strategies for the fabrication of 3D-printed MOF monoliths, such as direct ink writing,seed-assisted in-situ growth, coordination replication from solid precursors, matrix incorporation, selective laser sintering, and digital light processing, are described with the relevant examples. Finally, future directions and challenges of 3D-printed MOF monoliths are also presented to better plan future trajectories in the shaping of MOF materials with improved control over the structure, composition, and textural properties of 3D-printed MOF monoliths.
文摘Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) has the responsibility for restoring uranium mining facilities once the operations have finished.CNEA,within its Environmental Program and in compliance with its legal responsibilities, decides to implement a restoration project for all sites related to the mining and processing of uranium ores. The Malargüe Site is located within the Province of Mendoza in the city of Malargüe.It is the first site to successfully complete its remediation. The activities consist of relocation of tailings to an engineering repository. The tailings management(encapsulation) and rehabilitation of the area was finished in June 2017.The remediation alternative for the ore tailings was selected after conducting comparative studies and submitted the project to the society for consideration. The objective of the encapsulation of the mineral tails is to isolate them from the environment, also proceeding with the decontamination and rehabilitation of the area (landscaping,post-closure monitoring and 20 years monitoring period).Encapsulation consisted of the construction of a containment cell for the mine tailings,to isolate them and prevent pollutants from entering the environment through the transfer routes. To clean the impacted areas, the soil was removed,it was incorporated into the encapsulation, and the filling was carried out with natural soils from the area.Remediation prevents radon transfer to the environment,as ^(222)Ra is an alpha emitter with a half-life of four days, which produces its own radioactive progeny.Radon progeny are solids, and when a ^(222)Ra nucleus emits an alpha particle into the air,the resulting ^(218)Po nucleus, momentarily electrically charged, adheres to any dust particle.Remediation prevents the discharge into the air containing radon and also containing dust particles charged with intensely radioactive radon progeny. The tasks mentioned make it possible to decrease radon emanation, reduce radiological risks to the public and prevent the entry of rainwater into the system. In addition, the containment system prevents the discharge of contaminated liquids into the environment, avoiding contamination of the groundwater. All these activities are according to the concepts of sustainability.

文摘Direct conversion of solar energy into chemical energy in an environmentally friendly manner is one of the most promising strategies to deal with the environmental pollution and energy crisis.Among a variety of materials developed as photocatalysts, the core-shell metal/covalent-organic framework(MOF or COF)photocatalysts have garnered significant attention due to their highly porous structure and the adjustability in both structure and functionality. The existing reviews on core-shell organic framework photocatalytic materials have mainly focused on core-shell MOF materials. However, there is still a lack of indepth reviews specifically addressing the photocatalytic performance of core-shell COFs and MOFs@COFs.Simultaneously,there is an urgent need for a comprehensive review encompassing these three types of core-shell structures.Based on this, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable core-shell organic framework photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental governance.Firstly, the classification, synthesis, formation mechanisms, and reasonable regulation of core-shell organic framework were summarized. Then, the photocatalytic applications of these three kinds of core-shell structures in different areas, such as H_(2)evolution,CO_(2)reduction,and pollutants degradation are emphasized. Finally, the main challenges and development prospects of core-shell organic framework photocatalysts were introduced. This review aims to provide insights into the development of a novel generation of efficient and stable core-shell organic framework materials for energy conversion and environmental remediation.

文摘Chromium plays a vital role in stainless steel due to its ability to improve the corrosion resistance of the latter. However, the re-lease of chromium from stainless steel slag(SSS)during SSS stockpiling causes detrimental environmental issues. To prevent chromium pollution, the effects of iron oxide on crystallization behavior and spatial distribution of spinel were investigated in this work. The results revealed that FeO was more conducive to the growth of spinels compared with Fe2O3 and Fe3O4.Spinels were found to be mainly distrib-uted at the top and bottom of slag. The amount of spinel phase at the bottom decreased with the increasing FeO content, while that at the top increased. The average particle size of spinel in the slag with 18wt%FeO content was 12.8μm.Meanwhile,no notable structural changes were observed with a further increase in FeO content. In other words, the spatial distribution of spinel changed when the content of iron oxide varied in the range of 8wt%to 18wt%.Finally,less spinel was found at the bottom of slag with a FeO content of 23wt%.

文摘Opencast coal mining produces trash of soil and rock containing various minerals, that are usually dumped nearby the abandoned sites which causes severe environmental concern including the production of acid mine drainage(AMD)through oxidation pyrite minerals. The current study entailed assessing the potential production of AMD from an opencast coal mining region in Northeast part of India. In order to have a comprehensive overview of the AMD problem in Makum coalfield, the physico-chemical,geochemical,and petrological characteristics of the coal and overburden(OB)samples collected from the Makum coalfield(Northeast India)were thoroughly investigated. The maceral compositions reveal that coal features all three groups of macerals(liptinite, vitrinite, and inertinite),with a high concentration of liptinite indicating the coal of perhydrous, thereby rendering it more reactive.Pyrite(FeS_(2))oxidation kinetics were studied by conducting the aqueous leaching experiments of coal and(OB)samples to interpret the chemical weathering under controlled laboratory conditions of various temperature and time periods, and to replicate the actual mine site leaching.Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy(ICP-OES)was operated to detect the disposal of some precarious elements from coal and OB samples to the leachates during our controlled leaching experiment. The Rare earth element(REE)enrichment in the samples shows the anthropogenic incorporation of the REE in the coal and OB.These experiments reveal the change in conductivity, acid producing tendency, total dissolved solid(TDS),total Iron(Fe)and dissolved Sulfate(SO_(4)^(2−))ions on progress of the leaching experiments. Moreover, the discharge of FeS_(2) via atmospheric oxidation in laboratory condition undergoes a significant growth with the rise of temperature of the reaction systems in the environment and follows pseudo first order kinetics.A bio-remediative strategies is also reported in this paper to mitigate AMD water by employing size-segregated powdered limestone and water hyacinth plant in an indigenously developed site-specific prototype station.Apart from neutralisation of AMD water, this eco-friendly AMD remediation strategy demonstrates a reduction in PHEs concentrations in the treated AMD water.

文摘Since hydrate resources play a part of the stratigraphic framework structure in sediments, establishing a safe and economic method for hydrates exploitation remains the primary challenge to this day.Among the proposed methods, the spontaneous displacement of CH_(4) from hydrate cages by CO_(2) seems to be a perfect mechanism to address gas production and CO_(2) storage, especially in today's strong demand for carbon reduction and replacing clean energy. After extensive lab researches,in the past decade, injecting a mixture of CO_(2) and small molecule gas has become a key means to enhance displacement efficiency and has great potential for application. However, there is a lack of in-depth research on gas flow in the reservoir, while the injected gas always passes through low-saturated hydrate areas with high permeability and then occurs gas channel in a short term, finally resulting in the decreases in gas production efficiency and produced gas quality. Therefore,we explored a new injection-production mode of alternate injection of N2 and CO_(2) in order to fully coordinate the advantages of N_(2) in enhanced hydrate decomposition and CO_(2) in solid storage and heat compensation. These alternate"taking"and"storing"processes perfectly repair the problem of the gas channel, achieving self-regulation effect of CH_(4) recovery and CO_(2) storage. The 3-D experimental results show that compared to the mixed gas injection,CH_(4) recovery is increased by>50%and CO_(2) storage is increased by>70%.Additionally,this alternate injection mode presented a better performance in CH_(4) concentration of produced gas and showed outstanding N_(2) utilization efficiency.Further,we analyzed its self-adaptive gas flow mechanism and proposed an application model of"one injection and multiple production".We look forward to this study accelerating the application of CO_(2)-CH_(4) replacement technology.
