Reactive transport modeling(RTM)is an emerging method used to address geological issues in diagenesis research. However, the extrapolation of RTM results to practical reservoir prediction is not sufficiently understood. This paper presents a case study of the Eocene Qaidam Basin that combines RTM results with petrological and mineralogical evidence. The results show that the Eocene Xiaganchaigou Formation is characterized by mixed siliciclastic-carbonate-evaporite sedimentation in a semiclosed saline lacustrine environment.Periodic evaporation and salinization processes during the syngeneticpenecontemporaneous stage gave rise to the replacive genesis of dolomites and the cyclic enrichment of dolomite in the middle-upper parts of the meter-scale depositional sequences. The successive change in mineral paragenesis from terrigenous clastics to carbonates to evaporites was reconstructed using RTM simulations.Parametric uncertainty analyses further suggest that the evaporation intensity(brine salinity)and particle size of sediments(reactive surface area)were important rate-determining factors in the dolomitization,as shown by the relatively higher reaction rates under conditions of higher brine salinity and fine-grained sediments.Combining the simulation results with measured mineralogical and reservoir physical property data indicates that the preservation of original intergranular pores and the generation of porosity via replacive dolomitization were the major formation mechanisms of the distinctive lacustrine dolomite reservoirs(widespread submicron intercrystalline micropores)in the Eocene Qaidam Basin. The results confirm that RTM can be effectively used in geological studies, can provide a better general understanding of the dolomitizing fluid-rock interactions, and can shed light on the spatiotemporal evolution of mineralogy and porosity during dolomitization and the formation of lacustrine dolomite reservoirs. 展开更多

With the construction of the Three Gorges Reservoir dam, frequent reservoir landslide events have been recorded. In recent years,multi-row stabilizing piles(MRSPs)have been used to stabilize massive reservoir landslides in China. In this study, two centrifuge model tests were carried out to study the unreinforced and MRSP-reinforced slopes subjected to reservoir water level(RWL)operation, using the Taping landslide as a prototype. The results indicate that the RWL rising can provide lateral support within the submerged zone and then produce the inward seepage force, eventually strengthening the slope stability. However,a rapid RWL drawdown may induce outward seepage forces and a sudden debuttressing effect, consequently reducing the effective soil normal stress and triggering partial pre-failure within the RWL fluctuation zone.Furthermore, partial deformation and subsequent soil structure damage generate excess pore water pressures, ultimately leading to the overall failure of the reservoir landslide. This study also reveals that a rapid increase in the downslope driving force due to RWL drawdown significantly intensifies the lateral earth pressures exerted on the MRSPs.Conversely, the MRSPs possess a considerable reinforcement effect on the reservoir landslide, transforming the overall failure into a partial deformation and failure situated above and in front of the MRSPs.The mechanical transfer behavior observed in the MRSPs demonstrates a progressive alteration in relation to RWL fluctuations. As the RWL rises, the mechanical states among MRSPs exhibit a growing imbalance. The shear force transfer factor(i.e.the ratio of shear forces on pile of the n th row to that of the first row)increases significantly with the RWL drawdown. This indicates that the mechanical states among MRSPs tend toward an enhanced equilibrium. The insights gained from this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the failure mechanisms of reservoir landslides and the mechanical behavior of MRSPs in reservoir banks. 展开更多

This study aims to formulate a steady-state mathematical model for a three-dimensional permeable enclosure(cavity)to determine the oil extraction rate using three distinct nanoparticles,SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),and Fe_(2)O_(3),in unconventional oil reservoirs. The simulation is conducted for different parameters of volume fractions, porosities, and mass flow rates to determine the optimal oil recovery. The impact of nanoparticles on relative permeability(kr)and water is also investigated. The simulation process utilizes the finite volume ANSYS Fluent. The study results showed that when the mass flow rate at the inlet is low,oil recovery goes up.In addition, they indicated that silicon nanoparticles are better at getting oil out of the ground(i.e.,oil reservoir)than Al_(2)O_(3)and Fe_(2)O_(3).Most oil can be extracted from SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),and Fe_(2)O_(3)at a rate of 97.8%,96.5%,and 88%,respectively. 展开更多

In this study,a fully coupled hydromechanical model within the extended finite element method(XFEM)-based cohesive zone method(CZM)is employed to investigate the simultaneous height growth behavior of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures in layered porous reservoirs with modulus contrast. The coupled hydromechanical model is first verified against an analytical solution and a laboratory experiment. Then, the fracture geometry(e.g.height,aperture,and area)and fluid pressure evolutions of multiple hydraulic fractures placed in a porous reservoir interbedded with alternating stiff and soft layers are investigated using the model. The stress and pore pressure distributions within the layered reservoir during fluid injection are also presented. The simulation results reveal that stress umbrellas are easily to form among multiple hydraulic fractures’tips when propagating in soft layers, which impedes the simultaneous height growth. It is also observed that the impediment effect of soft layer is much more significant in the fractures suppressed by the preferential growth of adjoining fractures. After that, the combined effect of in situ stress ratio and fracturing spacing on the multi-fracture height growth is presented, and the results elucidate the influence of in situ stress ratio on the height growth behavior depending on the fracture spacing. Finally,it is found that the inclusion of soft layers changes the aperture distribution of outmost and interior hydraulic fractures. The results obtained from this study may provide some insights on the understanding of hydraulic fracture height containment observed in filed. 展开更多

The paper presents the results of comprehensive studies of filtration and capacitance properties of highly porous reservoir rocks of the aquifer of an underground gas storage facility. The geomechanical part of the research included studying the dependence of rock permeability on the stress-strain state in the vicinity of the wells, and physical modeling of the implementation of the method of increasing the permeability of the wellbore zone-the method of directional unloading of the reservoir. The digital part of the research included computed tomography(CT)-based computer analysis of the internal structure, pore space characteristics, and filtration properties before and after the tests.According to the results of physical modeling of deformation and filtration processes,it is found that the permeability of rocks before fracture depends on the stress-strain state insignificantly, and this influence is reversible. However, when downhole pressure reaches 7-8 MPa,macrocracks in the rock begin to grow, accompanied by irreversible permeability increase.Porosity, geodesic tortuosity and permeability values were obtained based on digital studies and numerical modeling.A weak degree of transversal anisotropy of the filtration properties of rocks was detected.Based on the analysis of pore size distribution, pressure field and flow velocities, high homogeneity and connectivity of the rock pore space is shown. The absence of pronounced changes in pore space characteristics and pore permeability after non-uniform triaxial loading rocks was shown. On the basis of geometrical analysis of pore space, the reasons for weak permeability anisotropy were identified. The filtration-capacitance properties obtained from the digital analysis showed very good agreement with the results of field and laboratory measurements. The physical modeling has confirmed the efficiency of application of the directional unloading method for the reservoir under study. The necessary parameters of its application were calculated:bottomhole geometry, stage of operation, stresses and pressure drawdown value. 展开更多

At present, the architecture modeling method of fluvial reservoirs are still developing.Traditional methods usually use grids to characterize architecture interbeds within the reservoir.Due to the thin thickness of this type of the interlayers, the number of the model grids must be greatly expanded. The number of grids in the tens of millions often makes an expensive computation;however, upscaling the model will generate a misleading model. The above confusion is the major reason that restricts the largescale industrialization of fluvial reservoir architecture models in oilfield development and production. Therefore, this paper explores an intelligent architecture modeling method for multilevel fluvial reservoirs based on architecture interface and element.Based on the superpositional relationship of different architectural elements within the fluvial reservoir, this method uses a combination of multilevel interface constraints and non-uniform grid techniques to build a high-resolution 3D geological model for reservoir architecture.Through the grid upscaling technology of heterogeneous architecture elements, different upscaling densities are given to the lateral-accretion bedding and lateral-accretion bodies to simplify the model gridding. This new method greatly reduces the number of model grids while ensuring the accuracy of lateral-accretion bedding models, laying a foundation for large-scale numerical simulation of the subsequent industrialization of the architecture model. This method has been validated in A layer of X oilfield with meandering fluvial channel sands as reservoirs and B layer of Y oilfield with braided river sands as reservoirs. The simulation results show that it has a higher accuracy of production history matching and remaining oil distribution forecast of the targeted sand body. The numerical simulation results show that in the actual development process of oilfield, the injected water will not displace oil in a uniform diffusive manner as traditionally assumed, but in a more complex pattern with oil in upper part of sand body being left behind as residual oil due to the influences of different levels of architecture interfaces. This investigation is important to guiding reservoir evaluation, remaining oil analysis, profile control and potential tapping and well pattern adjustment. 展开更多

To investigate the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of ischemic stroke, some methods have been proposed that can simultaneously monitor and create embolisms in the animal cerebral cortex. However, these methods often require complex systems and the effect of age on cerebral embolism has not been adequately studied, although ischemic stroke is strongly age-related.In this study,we propose an optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy-based visualized photothrombosis methodology to create and monitor ischemic stroke in mice simultaneously using a 532 nm pulsed laser. We observed the molding process in mice of different ages and presented age-dependent vascular embolism differentiation. Moreover,we integrated optical coherence tomography angiography to investigate age-associated trends in cerebrovascular variability following a stroke. Our imaging data and quantitative analyses underscore the differential cerebrovascular responses to stroke in mice of different ages, thereby highlighting the technique's potential for evaluating cerebrovascular health and unraveling age-related mechanisms involved in ischemic strokes. 展开更多

Control signaling is mandatory for the operation and management of all types of communication networks, including the Third Generation Partnership Project(3GPP)mobile broadband networks. However, they consume important and scarce network resources such as bandwidth and processing power. There have been several reports of these control signaling turning into signaling storms halting network operations and causing the respective Telecom companies big financial losses. This paper draws its motivation from such real network disaster incidents attributed to signaling storms. In this paper,we present a thorough survey of the causes,of the signaling storm problems in 3GPP-based mobile broadband networks and discuss in detail their possible solutions and countermeasures. We provide relevant analytical models to help quantify the effect of the potential causes and benefits of their corresponding solutions.Another important contribution of this paper is the comparison of the possible causes and solutions/countermeasures,concerning their effect on several important network aspects such as architecture, additional signaling, fidelity, etc.,in the form of a table. This paper presents an update and an extension of our earlier conference publication. To our knowledge,no similar survey study exists on the subject. 展开更多

In heterogeneous natural gas reservoirs, gas is generally present as small patchlike pockets embedded in the water-saturated host matrix. This type of heterogeneity, also called "patchy saturation", causes significant seismic velocity dispersion and attenuation. To establish the relation between seismic response and type of fluids, we designed a rock physics model for carbonates. First, we performed CT scanning and analysis of the fluid distribution in the partially saturated rocks. Then, we predicted the quantitative relation between the wave response at different frequency ranges and the basic lithological properties and pore fluids. A rock physics template was constructed based on thin section analysis of pore structures and seismic inversion. This approach was applied to the limestone gas reservoirs of the right bank block of the Amu Darya River. Based on poststack wave impedance and prestack elastic parameter inversions, the seismic data were used to estimate rock porosity and gas saturation. The model results were in good agreement with the production regime of the wells. 展开更多

Based on the percolation network model characterizing reservoir rock's pore structure and fluid characteristics, this paper qualitatively studies the effects of pore size, pore shape, pore connectivity, and the amount of micropores on the I - Sw curve using numerical modeling. The effects of formation water salinity on the electrical resistivity of the rock are discussed. Then the relative magnitudes of the different influencing factors are discussed. The effects of the different factors on the I - Sw curve are analyzed by fitting simulation results. The results show that the connectivity of the void spaces and the amount of micropores have a large effect on the I - S, curve, while the other factors have little effect. The formation water salinity has a large effect on the absolute resistivity values. The non-Archie phenomenon is prevalent, which is remarkable in rocks with low permeability. 展开更多

Hydrocarbon production from shale has attracted much attention in the recent years. When applied to this prolific and hydrocarbon rich resource plays, our understanding of the complexities of the flow mechanism(sorption process and flow behavior in complex fracture systems- induced or natural) leaves much to be desired. In this paper, we present and discuss a novel approach to modeling, history matching of hydrocarbon production from a Marcellus shale asset in southwestern Pennsylvania using advanced data mining, pattern recognition and machine learning technologies. In this new approach instead of imposing our understanding of the flow mechanism, the impact of multi-stage hydraulic fractures, and the production process on the reservoir model, we allow the production history, well log, completion and hydraulic fracturing data to guide our model and determine its behavior. The uniqueness of this technology is that it incorporates the so-called "hard data" directly into the reservoir model, so that the model can be used to optimize the hydraulic fracture process. The "hard data" refers to field measurements during the hydraulic fracturing process such as fluid and proppant type and amount, injection pressure and rate as well as proppant concentration. This novel approach contrasts with the current industry focus on the use of "soft data"(non-measured, interpretive data such as frac length, width, height and conductivity) in the reservoir models. The study focuses on a Marcellus shale asset that includes 135 wells with multiple pads, different landing targets, well length and reservoir properties. The full field history matching process was successfully completed using this data driven approach thus capturing the production behavior with acceptable accuracy for individual wells and for the entire asset. 展开更多

Due to inherent limits of data acquisition and geophysical data resolution, there are large uncertainties in the characterization of subsurface fractures. However, outcrop analogies can provide qualitative and quantitative information on a large number of fractures, based on which the accuracy of subsurface fracture characterization can be improved. Here we take the tectonic fracture modeling of an ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoir based on an outcrop analogy, a case study of the Chang6t~ Formation of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Group of the Wangyao Oilfield in the Ordos Basin of China. An outcrop at the edge of the basin is a suitable analog for the reservoir, but the prerequisite is that they must have equivalent previous stress fields, similar final structural characteristics, relative timing and an identical depositional environment and diagenesis. The relationship among fracture density, rock type and bed thickness based on the outcrop is one of the most important fracture distribution models, and can be used to interpret fracture density in individual wells quantitatively. Fracture orientation, dip, geometry and scale, also should be described and measured in the outcrop, and can be used together with structure restoration and single well fracture density interpretation to guide fracture intensity prediction on bed surfaces and to constrain the construction of the 3D fracture geometry model of the subsurface reservoir. The application of the above principles shows the outcrop-based tectonic fracture models of the target ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoir are consistent with fractures inferred from microseismic interpretation and tracer tests. This illustrated that the fracture modeling based on the outcrop analogy is reliable and can reduce the uncertainty in stochastic fracture modeling. 展开更多

This paper discusses the principles of geologic constraints on reservoir stochastic modeling. By using the system science theory, two kinds of uncertainties, including random uncertainty and fuzzy uncertainty, are recognized. In order to improve the precision of stochastic modeling and reduce the uncertainty in realization, the fuzzy uncertainty should be stressed, and the "geological genesis-controlled modeling" is conducted under the guidance of a quantitative geological pattern. Fractured reservoirs are an important target for oil and gas exploration in the Tarim Basin and the prediction of this type of reservoir is challenging.Due to the complicated fracture system in the Tarim Basin, the conventional AVO inversion method based on HTI theory to predict fracture development will result in some errors. Thus,an integrated research concept for fractured reservoir prediction is put forward in this paper.Seismic modeling plays a bridging role in this concept, and the establishment of an anisotropic fracture model by Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) is the key part.Because the fracture system in the Tarim Basin shows complex anisotropic characteristics,it is vital to build an effective anisotropic model.Based on geological, well logging and seismic data,an effective anisotropic model of complex fracture systems can be set up with the DFN method. The effective elastic coefficients, and the input data for seismic modeling can be calculated. Then seismic modeling based on this model is performed, and the seismic response characteristics are analyzed. The modeling results can be used in the following AVO inversion for fracture detection. 展开更多

Numerous hydrocarbon accumulations are found in ramp crest shoals worldwide and therefore this depositional setting has a high potential of being the hydrocarbon reservoir. In this paper, we combined digital outcrop geology and traditional geological mapping to build an outcrop-based geocellular model of the ramp-crest shoal complex of the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation in the Eastern Sichuan Basin. The outcrop model serves as an analogue for the subsurface reservoir of the Feixianguan Formation and illustrates the complexity of the lithofacies types, stratigraphic architecture, and reservoir heterogeneities at a scale below conventional subsurface data resolution. The studied ramp -crest shoal complex consists of thirteen types of lithofacies that can be grouped into three facies-groups corresponding to subtidal intraclastic shoal, sub- to inter-tidal oolitic shoal, and tidal flat depositional environments respectively. The stratigraphic architecture of the shoal complex shows mostly a strong progradation of the high energy facies associated with an overall decrease of accommodation space associated with relative sea level still stand. Two reservoir facies associations have been recognized. The first one consists of supratidai dolomudstone and upper intertidal partially dolomitized oolitic packstone with anhydrite or nodules. These facies were deposited above the high energy oolitic grainstones and occurs as thin-bedded and laterally continuous layers, characterized by high porosity and low permeability. The second reservoir facies association is composed of intertidal crystalline dolomite and subtidal intraclastic bindstone that occurs stratigraphically below the oolitic grainstones. These deposits consist of massive laterally discontinuously beds, and are characterized by high porosity and high permeability. Both types of reservoir facies tend to be stacked vertically and migrated laterally with the progradation of the shoal complex. The construction of the outcrop-based 3D geological model provide a description and quantification of the facies distribution within a robust stratigraphic framework and the style and amount of reservoir heterogeneities associated with a ramp-crest shoal complex reservoir such as the one found in Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation and Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation in Sichuan Basin or other ramp-crest reservoir worldwide. 展开更多

Fracture network connectivity and aperture (or conductivity) distribution are two crucial features controlling flow behavior of naturally fractured reservoirs. The effect of connectivity on flow properties is well documented. In this paper, however, we focus here on the influence of fracture aperture distribution. We model a two dimensional fractured reservoir in which the matrix is impermeable and the fractures are well connected. The fractures obey a power-law length distribution, as observed in natural fracture networks. For the aperture distribution, since the information from subsurface fracture networks is limited, we test a number of cases: log-normal distributions (from narrow to broad), power-law distributions (from narrow to broad), and one case where the aperture is pro- portional to the fracture length. We find that even a well- connected fracture network can behave like a much sparser network when the aperture distribution is broad enough (c~ 〈 2 for power-law aperture distributions and σ ≥ 0.4 for log-normal aperture distributions). Specifically, most fractures can be eliminated leaving the remaining dominant sub-network with 90% of the permeability of the original fracture network. We determine how broad the aperture distribution must be to approach this behavior and the dependence of the dominant sub-network on the parameters of the aperture distribution. We also explore whether one can identify the dominant sub-network without doing flow calculations. 展开更多

Accurate fluid flow simulation in geologically complex reservoirs is of particular importance in construction of reservoir simulators.General approaches in naturally fractured reservoir simulation involve use of unstructured grids or a structured grid coupled with locally unstructured grids and discrete fracture models. These methods suffer from drawbacks such as lack of flexibility and of ease of updating. In this study,I combined fracture modeling by elastic gridding which improves flexibility, especially in complex reservoirs. The proposed model revises conventional modeling fractures by hard rigid planes that do not change through production. This is a dubious assumption, especially in reservoirs with a high production rate in the beginning. The proposed elastic fracture modeling considers changes in fracture properties, shape and aperture through the simulation. This strategy is only reliable for naturally fractured reservoirs with high fracture permeability and less permeable matrix and parallel fractures with less cross-connections.Comparison of elastic fracture modeling results with conventional modeling showed that these assumptions will cause production pressure to enlarge fracture apertures and change fracture shapes, which consequently results in lower production compared with what was previously assumed. It is concluded that an elastic gridded model could better simulate reservoir performance. 展开更多
