Sokoto Emirate was one of the three(later four)constituent emirates in colonial Sokoto Province,Northern Nigeria.The others being Sokoto,Gwandu,Argungu,and Yauri Emirates.It is located at the northwestern most part of...Sokoto Emirate was one of the three(later four)constituent emirates in colonial Sokoto Province,Northern Nigeria.The others being Sokoto,Gwandu,Argungu,and Yauri Emirates.It is located at the northwestern most part of Nigeria.The Sokoto Emirate covers the present day Sokoto and Zamfara states of Nigeria.During the British colonial administration,native authority(NA)system was a model of local government administration created under the“indirect rule system”.It was a system where by the pre-colonial traditional leadership institutions were modified and allowed to function in the local government administration introduced by the British.This paper assessed the role played by traditional leadership institutions in addressing security challenges during the British colonial administration of Sokoto Emirate.In particular,the role played by the NA in arresting Mahdist uprisings,and other related extremist religious movements on the one hand,as well as rural banditry,armed robbery,theft,among other security challenges in the emirate,are highlighted.The paper further argued that some of the roles played by the traditional leadership institutions in successfully addressing those challenges are still relevant in addressing the problems of insurgency on the one hand,and some of the recent emerging security challenges,in northwestern Nigeria,such as cattle rustling,rural banditry,kidnappings,robbery,and other related challenges.展开更多

BACKGROUND We invented Endoscopic Ruler,a new endoscopic device to measure the size of varices in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.AIM To assess the feasibility and safety of Endoscopic Ruler,and evalua...BACKGROUND We invented Endoscopic Ruler,a new endoscopic device to measure the size of varices in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.AIM To assess the feasibility and safety of Endoscopic Ruler,and evaluate the agreement on identifying large oesophageal varices(OV)between Endoscopic Ruler and the endoscopists,as well as the interobserver agreement on diagnosing large OV using Endoscopic Ruler.METHODS We prospectively and consecutively enrolled patients with cirrhosis from 11 hospitals,all of whom got esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD)with Endoscopic Ruler.The primary study outcome was a successful measurement of the size of varices using Endoscopic Ruler.The secondary outcomes included adverse events,operation time,the agreement of identifying large OV between the objective measurement of Endoscopic Ruler and the empirical reading of endoscopists,together with the interobserver agreement on diagnosing large OV by Endoscopic Ruler.RESULTS From November 2020 to April 2022,a total of 120 eligible patients with cirrhosis were recruited and all of them underwent EGD examinations with Endoscopic Ruler successfully without any adverse event.The median operation time of Endoscopic Ruler was 3.00 min[interquartile range(IQR):3.00 min].The kappa value between Endoscopic Ruler and the endoscopists while detecting large OV was 0.52,demonstrating a moderate agreement.The kappa value for diagnosing large OV using Endoscopic Ruler among the six independent observers was 0.77,demonstrating a substantial agreement.CONCLUSION The data demonstrates that Endoscopic Ruler is feasible and safe for measuring the size of varices in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.Endoscopic Ruler is potential to promote the clinical practice of the two-grade classification system of OV.展开更多
The subwavelength confinement feature of localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) allows plasmonic nanostructures to be functionalized as powerful platforms for detecting various molecular analytes as well as weak ...The subwavelength confinement feature of localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) allows plasmonic nanostructures to be functionalized as powerful platforms for detecting various molecular analytes as well as weak processes with nanoscale spatial resolution. One of the main goals of this field of research is to lower the absolute limit-of-detection(LOD)of LSPR-based sensors. This involves the improvement of(i) the figure-of-merit associated with structural parameters such as the size, shape and interparticle arrangement and,(ii) the spectral resolution. The latter involves advanced target identification and noise reduction techniques. By highlighting the strategies for improving the LOD, this review introduces the fundamental principles and recent progress of LSPR sensing based on different schemes including 1) refractometric sensing realized by observing target-induced refractive index changes, 2) plasmon rulers based on target-induced relative displacement of coupled plasmonic structures, 3) other relevant LSPR-based sensing schemes including chiral plasmonics,nanoparticle growth, and optomechanics. The ultimate LOD and the future trends of these LSPR-based sensing are also discussed.展开更多
AIM:To measure in vitro diameter of imitational varices using a self-made endoscopic scale and confirm its accuracy and clinical feasibility.METHODS:A catheter was introduced into the endoscopeaccessory channel and at...AIM:To measure in vitro diameter of imitational varices using a self-made endoscopic scale and confirm its accuracy and clinical feasibility.METHODS:A catheter was introduced into the endoscopeaccessory channel and attached to a zebra wire guide that was used as a stylet.The wire guide was fixed onto the tip of the catheter by a soft and thin string.By gently advancing the stylet into the catheter,the width of the opening loop at the tip of the endoscope approximated the diameter of the imitational varices.Measurements performed in vitro using this self-made endoscopic ruler were compared to measurements of simulative varices.RESULTS:At the handle,the sleeve moving distance ranged from 5 to 14 mm.There was no obvious proportional relationship between the sleeve movement distance and endoscopic measurement ruler.The results indicated that the gap between the endoscopic measurement and actual measurement of the object size tended to close.The in vitro measurement of the diameter of the simulative varices showed that the two kinds of measuring methods were not significantly different with respect to their accuracy(P=0.8499).CONCLUSION:In vitro experiments confirmed that using a self-designed endoscopic ruler to measure the diameter of simulative varices was objective,accurate and feasible.展开更多

We discuss the po...In this article we continue the consideration of geometrical constructions of regular n-gons for odd n by rhombic bicompasses and ruler used in [1] for the construction of the regular heptagon (n=7). We discuss the possible factorization of the cyclotomic polynomial in polynomial factors which contain not higher than quadratic radicals in the coefficients whereas usually the factorization of the cyclotomic polynomials is considered in products of irreducible factors with integer coefficients. In considering the regular heptagon we find a modified variant of its construction by rhombic bicompasses and ruler. In detail, supported by figures, we investigate the case of the regular tridecagon (n=13) which in addition to n=7 is the only candidate with low n (the next to this is n=769 ) for which such a construction by rhombic bicompasses and ruler seems to be possible. Besides the coordinate origin we find here two points to fix for the possible application of two bicompasses (or even four with the addition of the complex conjugate points to be fixed). With only one bicompass one has in addition the problem of the trisection of an angle which can be solved by a neusis construction that, however, is not in the spirit of constructions by compass and ruler and is difficult to realize during the action of bicompasses. As discussed it seems that to finish the construction by bicompasses the correlated action of two rhombic bicompasses must be applied in this case which avoids the disadvantages of the neusis construction. Single rhombic bicompasses allow to draw at once two circles around two fixed points in such correlated way that the position of one of the rotating points on one circle determines the positions of all the other points on the second circle in unique way. The known case n=17 embedded in our method is discussed in detail.展开更多
A fast radial scanning probe system was constructed for the Keda Torus eXperiment(KTX)to measure the profiles of boundary plasma parameters such as floating potential,electron density,temperature,transport fluxes,etc....A fast radial scanning probe system was constructed for the Keda Torus eXperiment(KTX)to measure the profiles of boundary plasma parameters such as floating potential,electron density,temperature,transport fluxes,etc.The scanning probe system is driven by slow and fast motion mechanisms,corresponding to the stand-by movement of a stepping motor and the fast scanning movement of a high-torque servo-motor,respectively.In fast scanning,the scanner drives the probe radially up to 20 cm at a maximum velocity of 4.0 m s-1.A noncontact magnetic grating ruler with a high spatial resolution of 5μm is used for the displacement measurement.New scanning probe can reach the center of plasmas rapidly.The comparison of plasma floating potential profiles obtained by a fixed radial rake probe and the single scanning probe suggests that the high-speed scanning probe system is reliable for measuring edge plasma parameter profiles on the KTX device.展开更多
