Research work on rural landscape planning was conducted at Nanhua State Farm, which is located in the south of the Leizhou Peninsula, Guangdong Province. Based on its soil nutrient status, rainfall and mean yield of major crops, the soil suitability and land adaptability were evaluated. An artificial neural network was introduced as an alternative for modeling the landscape planning. A model was developed using back propagation as the learning procedure, the sigmoid function as the transfer function and 6 patch types and its number of three phases as input factors. Three optimum planning schemes were selected by using the model.Strategies were proposed for improving diversity and heterogeneity, productivity and sustainability within the system through the planning scheme. 展开更多

Traditional rural homegarden agroforestry system in the Chengdu Plain of China, called“Linpan”in Chinese, integrates the ecological functions of the landscape with human production activities.Studying the driving mechanisms of rural landscape changes in the Chengdu Plain is of great significance from stakeholders’perspective.Taking the Pidu Linpan Farming System(PLFS)in the suburban area of Chengdu(designated as one of China-Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems in 2020)as a case, this study combined remote sensing image analysis, oral history interviews, and focus group interviews to elucidate the driving forces of landscape changes in the PLFS.The results show that tourism development, traffic accessibility, economic demand, and agricultural heritage protection measure are the main driving forces promoting the stability and maintenance of the traditional homegardens. In contrast, population ageing, land circulation, centralized residence, climate change, and living and recreational need are the forces leading to adverse changes in the traditional homegardens. In addition, these driving forces have led to the gradual abandonment of traditional agricultural activities and critical issues related to rural landscape planning and management. The current research indicates that infrastructure construction and increased traditional agricultural income are considered as the best practices of local stakeholders, promoting the development of the protected homegardens of heritage sites and tourist destinations. Finally,we put forward some suggestions to improve and maintain the traditional rural landscape:(1)establishing a benefit-sharing mechanism;(2)establishing a training system with traditional technology and culture;(3)strengthening infrastructure construction;(4)promoting the development of the agricultural industry;(5)improving the cultural quality of farmers;and(6)establishing a management system with legal effects. This research can provide a basis for the formulation of rural landscape planning and the orderly and healthy development of agricultural heritage in Chengdu Plain. 展开更多

In recent years, the study of production-living-ecological space has progressively expanded from urban to rural areas. With the onset of a new era in rural development, diverse requirements for rural landscapes have emerged.Consequently, rural landscape planning in this new era is incorporating the three-pillar conception of sustainability.Island villages, with their distinct natural ecology and marine resources compared to inland villages, offer unique conditions, resulting in the production of diversified landscape types with significant development potential.Despite the limited attention given to the domestic development of island villages, this paper delves into the analysis of the three-pillar conception of sustainability and explores landscape protection strategies and renewal modes specific to island villages. To illustrate these concepts,East Xiaoqing Island Village in Rushan City,Weihai City serves as a case study. 展开更多

According to the World Heritage Convention, rural landscapes are evolving cultural landscapes and their heritage and management is a major international concern. The proposal of‘UNESCO World Heritage Sustainable Tourism(WH+ST)’has enlightened different arguments about protection and utilisation of the value of rural landscape heritage. The Outstanding Universal Value(OUV)of rural landscapes results from the interaction of nature and humankind.Local community residents are critical for the sustainable tourism development of rural landscape heritage.Landscapes would lose their authenticity and integrity without participation of community residents. At the same time tourism is promoting the economic development of communities, tourism will affect its natural environment and social culture in varying extents.Because of such impacts, rural landscapes are subject to the risk of becoming overly commercialised. In this sense, the discussion will focus on how to achieve balance among the various forces stemming from protection of the OUV of rural heritage, economic development and sustainable community-based tourism. This paper is based on field research at the World Heritage Hani Rice Terraces at Azheke Village(Yunnan Province,China). At this site, the agricultural landscape, architectural design, rural culture, and social traditions have confronted challenges because of the rapid development of the tourism industry soon after designation as a World Heritage Site in 2013.The planning was carried out in respect of three key problems:(1)How to motivate community residents’sense of recognition and honour of the heritage value?(2)How to create the manner and approach for the community residents to participate in rural sustainable tourism?and(3)How to improve the social residents’interests in the course of developing rural heritage tourism?Specific planning measures and suggestions have also been proposed in hopes that community residents take the initiative to protect, utilise and undertake the OUV of the Hani Rice Terraces. 展开更多

The application of digital technologies has greatly improved the efficiency of cultural heritage documentation and the diversity of heritage information.Yet the adequate incorporation of cultural, intangible, sensory or experimental elements of local heritage in the process of digital documentation, and the deepening of local community engagement, remain important issues in cultural heritage research. This paper examines the heritage landscape of tunpu people within the context of digital conservation efforts in China and the emergence of emotions studies as an evaluative tool.Using a range of data from the Ming-era village of Baojiatun in Guizhou Province, this paper tests an exploratory emotions-based approach and methodology, revealing shifting interpersonal relationships, experiential and praxiological engagement with the landscape, and emotional registers within tunpu culture and heritage management. The analysis articulates distinctive asset of emotional value at various scales and suggests that such approaches, applied within digital documentation contexts, can help researchers to identify multi-level heritage landscape values and their carriers. This methodology can provide more complete and dynamic inventories to guide digital survey and representation;and the emotions-based approach also supports the integration of disparate heritage aspects in a holistic understanding of the living landscape. Finally, the incorporation of community participation in the process of digital survey breaks down boundaries between experts and communities and leads to more culturally appropriate heritage records and representations. 展开更多

The term‘cultural landscape’has many different meanings for different people throughout the world. It has been widely circulated since the international recognition of cultural landscapes extended to World Heritage prominence in 1992 with three categories of cultural landscapes of outstanding universal value defined as the‘combined works of nature and of man’.However, the application of World Heritage Cultural Landscapes(WHCLs)encountered difficulties in China. This paper reviews the history of nature-related World Heritage conservation in the country, examines the cross-cultural confusion of World Heritage practice from Chinese traditional cultural perspective of culture and nature relationship to address to the international bewilderment about China’s two-decade absence from WHCLs.The paper also reviews the efforts taken by China to dispel the conceptual confusion, what has been inspired by and contributed to the WHCLs in the recent years. Finally, the paper examines what China and WHCLs can mutually benefit from each other based on the common concerns of sustainable development and harmonious human-nature relationship in the future. 展开更多
