The transient thermal response of a thick orthotropic hollow cylinder with finite length is studied by a high order shell theory. The radial and axial displacements are assumed to have quadratic and cubic variations through the thickness, respectively. It is important that the radial stress is approximated by a cubic expansion satisfying the boundary conditions at the inner and outer surfaces, and the corresponding strain should be least-squares compatible with the strain derived from the strain-displacement relation. The equations of motion are derived from the integration of the equilibrium equations of stresses, which are solved by precise integration method (PIM). Numerical results are.obtained, and compared with FE simulations and dynamic thermo-elasticity solutions, which indicates that the high order shell theory is capable of predicting the transient thermal response of an orthotropic (or isotropic) thick hollow cylinder efficiently, and for the detonation tube of actual pulse detonation engines (PDE) heated continuously, the thermal stresses will become too large to be neglected, which are not like those in the one time experiments with very short time. 展开更多

In this work, wemodeled the brittle fracture of shell structure in the framework of Peridynamics Mindlin-Reissener shell theory,in which the shell is described by material points in themean-plane with its drilling rotation neglected in kinematic assumption. To improve the numerical accuracy, the stress-point method is utilized to eliminate the numerical instability induced by the zero-energy mode and rank-deficiency.The crack surface is represented explicitly by stress points, and a novel general crack criterion is proposed based on that.Instead of the critical stretch used in common peridynamic solid,it is convenient to describe thematerial failure by using the classic constitutive model in continuum mechanics. In this work,a concise crack simulation algorithm is also provided to describe the crack path and its development,in order to simulate the brittle fracture of the shell structure.Numerical examples are presented to validate and demonstrate our proposed model. Results reveal that our model has good accuracy and capability to represent crack propagation and branch spontaneously. 展开更多

According to the Bruggeman theory and Maxwell-Garnett theory, the effective dielectric constant of a two-phase random composite with an interfacial shell is presented. The nonlinearity of the theory is obvious. Especially, the theory is suited to study the dielectric properties of two-phase random composites with a spherical interfacial shell. In this article, the nonlinear dynamic responses of sandwich functionally graded(FG) porous cylindrical shell embedded in elastic media are investigated. The shell studied here consists of three layers, of which the outer and inner skins are made of solid metal, while the core is FG porous metal foam. Partial differential equations are derived by utilizing the improved Donnell's nonlinear shell theory and Hamilton's principle. Afterwards, the Galerkin method is used to transform the governing equations into nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and an approximate analytical solution is obtained by using the multiple scales method. The effects of various system parameters, specifically, the radial load, core thickness, foam type, foam coefficient, structure damping, and Winkler-Pasternak foundation parameters on nonlinear internal resonance of the sandwich FG porous thin shells are evaluated. 展开更多

The vibration characteristics of a functionally graded material circular cylindrical shell filled with fluid are examined with a wave propagation approach. The shell is filled with an incompressible non-viscous fluid. Axial modal dependence is approximated by exponential functions. A theoretical study of shell vibration frequencies is analyzed for simply supported-simply supported, clamped-simply supported, and clamped-clamped boundary conditions with the fluid effect. The validity and the accuracy of the present method are confirmed by comparing the present results with those available in the literature. Good agreement is observed between the two sets of results. 展开更多

The nonlinear vibration characteristics of the piezoelectric circular cylindrical nanoshells resting on an elastic foundation are analyzed. The small scale effect and thermo-electro-mechanical loading are taken into account. Based on the nonlocal elasticity theory and Donnell's nonlinear shell theory, the nonlinear governing equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived by employing Hamilton's principle. Then, the Galerkin method is used to transform the governing equations into a set of ordinary differential equations, and subsequently, the multiple-scale method is used to obtain an approximate analytical solution. The possibility of using Neumann's method to solve the boundary problems for thin elastic shells is studied. The variational statement of the static problems for the shells allows for a problem examination within the distribution space. The convergence of Neumann's method is proven for the shells with holes when the boundary of the domain is not completely fixed. The numerical implementation of Neumann's method normally requires significant time before any reliable results can be achieved. This paper suggests a way to improve the convergence of the process, and allows for parallel computing and evaluation during the calculations. 展开更多

The aim of the present study is to investigate the nonlinear free vibration of spinning cylindrical shells under spinning and arbitrary boundary conditions.Artificial springs are used to simulate arbitrary boundary conditions.Sanders’shell theory is employed, and von Kármán nonlinear terms are considered in the theoretical modeling.By using Chebyshev polynomials as admissible functions, motion equations are derived with the Ritz method. Then,a direct iteration method is used to obtain the nonlinear vibration frequencies. The effects of the circumferential wave number, the boundary spring stiffness, and the spinning speed on the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the shells are highlighted. It is found that there exist sensitive intervals for the boundary spring stiffness, which makes the variation of the nonlinear frequency ratio more evident. The decline of the frequency ratio caused by the spinning speed is more significant for the higher vibration amplitude and the smaller boundary spring stiffness. 展开更多

In this study, the buckling analysis of a Graphene oxide powder reinforced(GOPR)nanocomposite shell is investigated. The effective material properties of the nanocomposite are estimated through Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme.Three distribution types of GOPs are considered, namely uniform,X and O.Also,a first-order shear deformation shell theory is incorporated with the principle of virtual work to derive the governing differential equations of the problem. The governing equations are solved via Galerkin’s method, which is a powerful analytical method for static and dynamic problems.Comparison study is performed to verify the present formulation with those of previous data.New results for the buckling load of GOPR nanocomposite shells are presented regarding for different values of circumferential wave number.Besides, the influences of weight fraction of nanofillers, length and radius to thickness ratios and elastic foundation on the critical buckling loads of GOP-reinforced nanocomposite shells are explored. 展开更多

A new numerical approach is presented to compute the large deformations of shell-type structures made of the Saint Venant-Kirchhoff and Neo-Hookean materials based on the seven-parameter shell theory.A work conjugate pair of the first Piola Kirchhoff stress tensor and deformation gradient tensor is considered for the stress and strain measures in the paper.Through introducing the displacement vector, the deformation gradient, and the stress tensor in the Cartesian coordinate system and by means of the chain rule for taking derivative of tensors, the difficulties in using the curvilinear coordinate system are bypassed. The variational differential quadrature(VDQ)method as a pointwise numerical method is also used to discretize the weak form of the governing equations.Being locking-free,the simple implementation, computational efficiency, and fast convergence rate are the main features of the proposed numerical approach. Some well-known benchmark problems are solved to assess the approach. The results indicate that it is capable of addressing the large deformation problems of elastic and hyperelastic shell-type structures efficiently. 展开更多

The vibration of the layered cylindrical shells filled with a quiescent, incompressible, and inviscid fluid is analyzed. The governing equations of the cylindrical shells are derived by Love's approximation. The solutions of the displacement functions are assumed in a separable form to obtain a system of coupled differential equations in terms of the displacement functions. The displacement functions are approximated by Bickley-type splines. A generalized eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically for the frequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of the spline coefficients. Two layered shells with three different types of materials under clamped-clamped (C-C) and simply supported (S-S) boundary conditions are considered. The variations of the frequency parameter with respect to the relative layer thickness, the length-to-radius ratio, the length-to-thickness ratio, and the circumferential node number are analyzed. 展开更多

Shape sensing as a crucial component of structural health monitoring plays a vital role in real-time actuation and control of smart structures, and monitoring of structural integrity. As a model-based method, the inverse finite element method(iFEM)has been proved to be a valuable shape sensing tool that is suitable for complex structures. In this paper,we propose a novel approach for the shape sensing of thin shell structures with iFEM.Considering the structural form and stress characteristics of thin-walled structure, the error function consists of membrane and bending section strains only which is consistent with the Kirchhoff–Love shell theory. For numerical implementation,a new four-node quadrilateral inverse-shell element,iDKQ4,is developed by utilizing the kinematics of the classical shell theory. This new element includes hierarchical drilling rotation degrees-of-freedom(DOF)which enhance applicability to complex structures.Firstly, the reconstruction performance is examined numerically using a cantilever plate model.Following the validation cases, the applicability of the iDKQ4 element to more complex structures is demonstrated by the analysis of a thin wallpanel. Finally, the deformation of a typical aerospace thin-wall structure(the composite tank)is reconstructed with sparse strain data with the help of iDKQ4 element. 展开更多

The main objective of this study is to investigate the buckling analysis of CCSs reinforced by CNTs subjected to combined loading of hydrostatic pressure and axial compression resting on the twoparameter elastic foundation(T-P-EF).It is one of the first attempts to derive the governing equations of the CCSs reinforced with CNTs,based on a generalized first-order shear deformation shell theory(FSDST)which includes shell-foundation interaction.By adopting the extended mixing rule, the effective material properties of CCSs reinforced by CNTs with linear distributions are approximated by introducing some efficiency parameters.Three carbon nanotube distribution in the matrix,i.e.uniform distribution(U)and V and X-types linear distribution are taken into account. The stability equations are solved by using the Galerkin procedure to determine the combined buckling loads(CBLs)of the structure selected here. The numerical illustrations cover CBLs characteristics of CCSs reinforced by CNTs in the presence of the T-P-EF.Finally,a parametric study is carried out to study the influences of the foundation parameters, the volume fraction of carbon nanotubes and the types of reinforcement on the CBLs. 展开更多

The influence of hygrothermal effects on the buckling and postbuckling of composite laminated cylindrical shells subjected to axial compression is investigated using a micro-to-macro-mechanical analytical model. The material properties of the composite are affected hy the variation of temperature and moisture, and are hosed on a micromechanical model of a laminate. The governing equations are based on the classical laminated shell theory, and including hygrothermal effects. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the shell were both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling was extended to the case of laminated cylindrical shells under hygrothermal environments, and a singular peturbation technique was employed to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect, cross-ply laminated cylindrical shells under different sets of environmental conditions. The influences played by temperature rise, the degree of moisture concentration, fiber volume fraction, shell geometric parameter, total number of plies, stacking sequences and initial geometric imperfections are studied. 展开更多
