Based on the composite modification technology of the surface of nano Silicondioxide by non-soap emulsion polymerization, it is verified that there are polymer grafted on thesurface of nano silicon dioxide. The modification mechanism and the bonding status on the surface ofnano silicon dioxide after modification were suggested via the results of the infrared spectrum,transmission electronic microscope photograph and X-ray photoelectron spectrum. The hydroxyl formedby hydrolyzing of silane coupling agent reacts with hydroxyl on the surface of nano silicon dioxideto form Si-O-Si bonds by losing water molecules and hence the double bonds are introduced onto thesurface of nano silicon dioxide. The surface of nano silicon dioxide is grafted with polymer throughfree radical polymerization between the double bonds on the surface of nano silicon dioxide andstyrene under the action of initiating agent. The dispersibility of nano silicon dioxide and thecontrollability of surface modification of nano silicon dioxide can be greatly improved by themodification process. 展开更多

Silicon dioxide (SiO2) films were prepared on sapphire (α-Al2O3) by radio frequency magnetron reactive sputtering in order to increase both transmission and rain erosion resistant performance of infrared domes of sapphire. Composition and structure of SiO2 films were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The transmittance of uncoated and coated sapphire was measured using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Rain erosion tests of the uncoated and coated sapphire were performed at 211 m/s impact velocity with an exposure time ranging from 1 to 8 min on a whirling arm rig. Results show that the deposited films can greatly increase the transmission of sapphire in mid-wave IR. After rain erosion test, decreases in normalized transmission were less than 1% for designed SiO2 films and the SiO2 coating was strongly bonded to the sapphire substrate. In addition, sapphires coated with SiO2 films had a higher transmittance than uncoated ones after rain erosion. 展开更多

Ginseng ameliorates pulmonary toxicity induced by silicon dioxide nanoparticles in rats

Objective:To investigate the protective and therapeutic role of ginseng against silicon dioxide nanoparticles(SiO2NPs)-induced toxicity in the lungs.Methods:Sixty male rats were divided into five groups(n=12/group);group 1 was used as a control,group 2 received ginseng,group 3 was treated with SiO2NPs,and group 4 was pretreated with ginseng one week before SiO2NPs,while group 5 was given SiO2NPs one week before supplementation with ginseng.Animals were treated with both ginseng and SiO2NPs orally for five weeks.Real-time PCR was used to measure gene expression.Besides,DNA damage and cell cycle changes were determined by comet assay and flow cytometry,respectively.Histological study was also done to assess the effect of ginseng on SiO2NPs-induced toxicity.Results:SiO2NPs increased lipid peroxidation and decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes.SiO2NPs induced apoptosis in lung tissues as revealed by upregulation of Bax and caspase 3 and downregulation of Bcl-2 as well as the induction of DNA damage.SiO2NPs also caused inflammation as indicated by upregulation of the inflammation-related genes[interleukin 1 beta(IL-1β),tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB),cyclooxygenase 2(COX2),and transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGFβ1)]as well as cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase of lung cells.Moreover,histopathological examination proved the biochemical and molecular perturbations that occurred due to SiO2NPs toxicity.However,ginseng alleviated SiO2NPs-induced toxicity in rat lung.Conclusions:Ginseng has a potent preventive and therapeutic effect and could be used in the treatment of SiO2NPs-induced pulmonary toxicity. 展开更多

Preparation and Characterization of CA-MA Eutectic/Silicon Dioxide Nanoscale Composite Phase Change Material from Water Glass via Sol-Gel Method

This work mainly involved the preparation of a nano-scale form-stable phase change material(PCM) consisting of capric and myristic acid(CA-MA) binary eutectic acting as thermal absorbing material and nano silicon dioxide(nano-SiO_2) serving as the supporting material. Industrial water glass for preparation of the nano silicon dioxide matrix and CA-MA eutectic mixture were compounded by single-step sol-gel method with the silane coupling agent. The morphology, chemical characterization and form stability property of the composite PCM were investigated by transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and polarizing microscopy(POM). It was indicated that the average diameter of the composite PCM particle ranged from 30-100 nm. The CA-MA eutectic was immobilized in the network pores constructed by the Si-O bonds so that the composite PCM was allowed no liquid leakage above the melting temperature of the CA-MA eutectic. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) measurement were conducted to investigate the thermal properties and stability of the composite PCM. From the measurement results, the mass fraction of the CA-MA eutectic in the composite PCM was about 40%. The phase change temperature and latent heat of the composite were determined to be 21.15 ℃ and 55.67 J/g, respectively. Meanwhile, thermal conductivity of the composite was measured to be 0.208 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1) by using the transient hot-wire method. The composite PCM was able to maintain the surrounding temperature close to its phase change temperature and behaved well in thermalregulated performance which was verified by the heat storage-release experiment. This kind of form-stable PCM was supposed to complete thermal insulation even temperature regulation by the dual effect of relatively low thermal conductivity and phase change thermal storage-release properties. So it can be formulated that the nanoscale CA-MA/SiO_2 composite PCM with the form-stable property, good thermal storage capacity and relatively low thermal conductivity can be applied for energy conservation as a kind of thermal functional material. 展开更多

In this work, nanostructured silicon dioxide films are deposited by closed-field unbalanced direct-current (DC) reactive magnetron sputterin technique on two sides of quartz cells containing rhodamine B dye dissolved in ethanol with 10-5 M concentration as a random gain medium. The preparation conditions are optimized to prepare highly pure SiO2 nanostructures with a minimum particle size of about 20nm. The effect of SiO2 films as external cavity for the random gain medium is determined by the laser-induced fluorescence of this medium, and an increase of about 200% in intensity is observed after the deposition of nanostructured SiO2 thin films on two sides of the dye cell. 展开更多

This paper describes a new method to create nanoscale SiO2 pits or channels using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in an HF solution at room temperature within a few seconds. Using aligned SWNT arrays, a pattern of nanoscale SiO2 channels can be prepared. The nanoscale SiO2 patterns can also be created on the surface of three- dimensional (3D) SiO2 substrate and even the nanoscale trenches can be constructed with arbitrary shapes. A possible mechanism for this enhanced etching of SiO2 has been qualitatively analysed using defects in SWNTs, combined with H3O+ electric double layers around SWNTs in an HF solution. 展开更多

To enhance the catalytic activity of copper ferrite(CuFe_(2)O_(4))nanoparticle and promote its application as combustion catalyst,a low-cost silicon dioxide(SiO_(2))carrier was employed to construct a novel CuFe_(2)O_(4)/SiO_(2)binary composites via solvothermal method.The phase structure,morphology and catalytic activity of CuFe_(2)O_(4)/SiO_(2)composites were studied firstly,and thermal decomposition,combustion and safety performance of ammonium perchlorate(AP)and 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine(RDX)with it affecting were then systematically analyzed.The results show that CuFe_(2)O_(4)/SiO_(2)composite can remarkably either advance the decomposition peak temperature of AP and RDX,or reduce the apparent activation energy at their main decomposition zone.Moreover,the flame propagation rate of RDX was promoted by about 2.73 times with SiO_(2)content of 3 wt%,and safety property of energetic component was also improved greatly,in which depressing the electrostatic discharge sensitivity of pure RDX by about 1.89 times.In addition,the effective range of SiO_(2)carrier content in the binary catalyst is found to be 3 to 5 wt%.Therefore,SiO_(2)opens a new insight on the design of combustion catalyst carrier and will promote the application of CuFe_(2)O_(4)catalyst in solid propellant. 展开更多

Simultaneous thermal analysis(STA) was used to investigate the effects of silicon content on the oxidation kinetics of silicon-containing steels under an atmosphere and heating procedures similar to those used in industrial reheating furnaces for the production of hot-rolled strips. Our results show that when the heating temperature was greater than the melting point of Fe2SiO4, the oxidation rates of steels with different silicon contents were the same; the total mass gain decreased with increasing silicon content, whereas it increased with increasing oxygen content. The oxidation rates for steels with different silicon contents were constant with respect to time under isothermal conditions. In addition, the starting oxidation temperature, the intense oxidation temperature, and the finishing oxidation temperature increased with increasing silicon content; the intense oxidation temperature had no correlation with the melting of Fe2SiO4. Moreover, the silicon distributed in two forms: as Fe2SiO4 at the interface between the innermost layer of oxide scale and the iron matrix, and as particles containing silicon in grains and grain boundaries in the iron matrix. 展开更多

Silicon nanowires of high purity and regular morphology are of prime importance to ensure high specific capacities of lithium-ion batteries and reproducible electrode assembly process.Using nickel formate as a metal catalyst precursor,straight silicon nanowires(65–150 nm in diameter)were directly prepared by electrolysis from the Ni/SiO2 porous pellets with 0.8 wt%nickel content in molten CaCl2 at 900℃.Benefiting from their straight appearance and high purity,the silicon nanowires therefore offered an initial coulombic efficiency of 90.53% and specific capacity of 3377 m Ah/g.In addition,the silicon nanowire/carbon composite exhibited excellent cycle performance,retaining 90.38%of the initial capacity after 100 cycles.Whilst further study on the charge storage performance is still ongoing,these preliminary results demonstrate that nickel formate is an efficient and effective metal catalyst precursor for catalytic preparation of high purity straight silicon nanowires via the molten salt electrolysis,which is suitable for large-scale production. 展开更多

In the present work, a Cz-Silicon wafer is implanted with helium ions to produce a buried porous layer, and then thermally annealed in a dry oxygen atmosphere to make oxygen transport into the cavities. The formation of the buried oxide layer in the case of internal oxidation (ITOX) of the buried porous layer of cavities in the silicon sample is studied by positron beam annihilation (PBA). The cavities are formed by 15 keV He implantation at a fluence of 2×10^16 cm^-2 and followed by thermal annealing at 673 K for 30 min in vacuum. The internal oxidation is carried out at temperatures ranging from 1073 to 1473 K for 2 h in a dry oxygen atmosphere. The layered structures evolved in the silicon are detected by using the PBA and the thicknesses of their layers and nature are also investigated. It is found that rather high temperatures must be chosen to establish a sufficient flux of oxygen into the cavity layer. On the other hand high temperatures lead to coarsening the cavities and removing the cavity layer finally. 展开更多

The microstructure and electrical properties of ZnO-based varistors with the SiO2 content in the range of 0-1.00mol% were prepared by a solid reaction route. The varistors were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that the average grain size of ZnO decreases with the SiO2 content increasing. A new second phase (Zn2SiO4) and a glass phase (Bi2SiO5) are found. Element Si mainly exists in the grain boundary and plays an important role in controlling the Bi2O3 vaporization. The electric measurement shows that the incorporation of SiO2 can significantly improve the nonlinear properties of ZnO-based varistors, and the nonlinear coefficients of the varistors with SiO2 are in the range of 36.8-69.5. The varistor voltage reaches the maximum value of 463 V/mm and the leakage current reaches the minimum value of 0.11 μA at the SiO2 content of 0.75mol%. 展开更多

The effect of Al2O3 on the Cu-ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 catalysts prepared by a pseudo sol-gel method has been investigated and these catalysts were characterized by XRD, H2-TPR, XPS, NH3-TPD and CO2- TPD techniques. As revealed by XRD and H2-TPR, the added alumina produces high dispersion of CuO and makes the reduction of CuO difficult. XPS analysis detects a remarkably high Al^3+ enrichment at the surface of calcined samples, along with a decrease of Eb of Cu 2p3/2, which confirms the Cu-Al interaction. Another important role of Al203 would be to incorporate into the SiO2 structure to form the acid-base sites for ether formation. The reaction results shows that the addition of Al2O3 exhibits a promoting effect on the CO2 conversion only when its content is below 1.4%, and an optimal DME selectivity is obtained when 4.0%Al2O3 is added, indicating a better 'synergistic effect' is present between the methanol forming component and the acidic component in bifunctional catalysts. Possible relationship between the catalytic activity and the Cu-Al interaction as well as the surface acidity is discussed. 展开更多

We have developed a simple synthetic method to prepare the hybrid microspheres of CdS nanoparticles on the surface of silica microspheres modified by(3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane(MPS). The--SH groups of MPS can bind with the Cd^2+ ions on the surface of SiO2. When thioacetamide releases H2S, the nanosized CdS particles( 1-6 nm) will successfully be generated on the silica surface under the experimental conditions. The size of the CdS nanoparticles was found to be related to the concentration of Cd^2 + feed and the size of silica spheres, the higher the concentration of Cd^2+ and the larger of silica microspheres, the bigger the size of CdS nanoparticles. Nano-sized Ni particles on TiO2-SiO2 were synthesized by the two methods of photo-assisted deposition(PAD) and impregnation.H2,which is a promising energy carrier,with a low CO concentration was produced by the photocatalytic reforming of glucose(a model biomass) on the Ni/TiO2-SiO2 catalyst.The supported Ni enhanced the rate of H2 production while it suppressed CO selectivity.The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction,X-ray absorption fine structure,transmission electron microscope,and nitrogen adsorption analysis.Both H2 production and CO selectivity were strongly dependent on the preparation method,and PAD-Ni/TiO2-SiO2 was the better catalyst for H2 production with the lowest CO concentration. 展开更多

Fe3O4@SiO2 core–shell composite nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a one-pot process. Tetraethyl-orthosilicate was used as a surfactant to synthesize Fe3O4@SiO2 core–shell structures from prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The properties of the Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@SiO2 composite nanoparticles were studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared Fe3O4 particles were approximately 12 nm in size, and the thickness of the SiO2 coating was approximately 4 nm. The magnetic properties were studied by vibrating sample magnetometry. The results show that the maximum saturation magnetization of the Fe3O4@SiO2 powder(34.85 A·m^2·kg^–1) was markedly lower than that of the Fe3O4 powder(79.55 A·m^2·kg^–1), which demonstrates that Fe3O4 was successfully wrapped by SiO2. The Fe3O4@SiO2 composite nanoparticles have broad prospects in biomedical applications; thus, our next study will apply them in magnetic resonance imaging. 展开更多

Proton plays a key role in the interface-trap formation that is one of the primary reliability concerns, thus learning how it behaves is key to understand the radiation response of microelectronic devices. The first-principles calculations have been applied to explore the defects and their reactions associated with the proton release in a-quartz, the well-known crystalline isomer of amorphous silica. When a high concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2) is present, the proton generation can be enhanced by cracking the He molecules at the positively charged oxygen vacancies in dimer configuration. If the concentration of molecular hydrogen is low, the proton generation mainly depends on the proton dissociation of the doubly- hydrogenated defects. In particular, a fully passivated E~ center can dissociate to release a proton barrierlessly by structure relaxation once trapping a hole. This research provides a microscopic insight into the proton release in silicon dioxide, the critical step associated with the interface-trap formation under radiation in microelectronic devices. 展开更多
