On Poetic Advertisements Translating by Functional Equivalence in Skopostheory

A hot issue was once the advertisement translation as a pragmatic one. But it is surprising how little attention has been paid to a new kind of advertisement-poetic advertisement, which has caught a great significance in the world of business.In this paper it attempts to do a poetic translation study by Nida's theories that stand for the German functional translation school. Through the research for some translation cases, it is found that the theory functional equivalence is feasible for representing the poetic beauty, the readers' acceptability and the functions of advertisements. What is shown thereby is that the theory functional equivalence can work as guiding principle in the translation of English poetic advertisement.

A Study on the C-E Translation of Travel Guides of Henan Scenic Spots from the Perspective of Skopostheory

Travel guides are not only important windows for foreign visitors to obtain information on China's scenic spots, but also main mediums for spreading Chinese culture. By comparing and analyzing the differences between Chinese and English travel guides, this paper, combined with the case of Henan scenic spots, makes a study of the translation principle, translation strategy and translation methods of travel guides from the perspective of Skopostheory.

On C-E Translation of Tourism Public Signs in the Light of Skopostheorie

On English Translation of Public Service Advertisement in China Daily From the Perspective of Skopostheorie

Nowadays China has turned out to be the second largest economy in the world,appealing foreigners to pay more attention to China.As we all know,China Daily(the English version)enjoys the most authoritative English newspaper at home,mainstreaming economy,environment,society and so on.Public service advertisement(afterwards PSA represents it)reflects China’s current situation and also raises public awareness.As a result,it is enormously important to study English translation of PSA in China Daily.Guided by Skopostheorie,this paper aims at discussing the present studies of PSA at home and abroad and making a detailed study of PSA through adopting proper English translation strategies,hoping to provide some experience in this field.

The C-E Translation of Cultural Elements in Tourist Materials from Skopostheorie

The thesis mainly disucsses two problems caused by cultural differences,namely cultural default and language conventions in tourist materials.To deal with these translation dificulties,a variety of methods including explanation,adding,analogy and comparison,deletion,paraphrase and adaptation are put forward to realize the intended function of the target texts under the guidance of Skopostheorie.

Equivalence can be said to be the central issue in translation although its different approaches have caused heated controversy.However,as early as the 1970s,the Skopostheorie emerged in Germany,and it seemed to challenge the equivalence theories.Although Nida and some linguistics raised some negative problems of this theory,it still rapidly became famous around the world,This article will mainly compare and analyse Skopostheorie and Baker's translation equivalence approach.First,it will give a simple overview of these two approaches.Second,it will discuss the relevant strengths and weaknesses of these two approaches in relation to their usage.Finally,it will discuss combining these two approaches in the same translation.

Video Game Title Translation Functional Translation Theory Perspective

The video game plays an important role in inter-cultural communication studies. However, few have ventured the field of E-C translation of video game titles. Within the frame of Skopostheorie, this paper focuses on the three translation strategies brought up by the functions and features of video game titles. When preserving the structure and meaning of the original title is possible, literal translation should be used. However, the fact that some translators ignore the context of the title causes rigid translation. Transliteration is recommended when the title is the name of a person or place because the meaning of the title is hard to be preserved by the other two strategies. Since there are cultural differences between China and western world, when literal translation and transliteration cannot present the meaning of the title, free translation should be used. Translators should bear the content and game play of the game in mind in order to free themselves from the formal equivalence for a properly translated title. Free translation does not mean translators can do the translation as whatever they want in the name of Skopos, they should avoid arbitrary translation. The aim of this paper is to help people to understand more about the E-C translation of video game title as well as the practical translation strategies and Sino-western inter-cultural communication.

Skopostheorie and the Application to English-Chinese Film Title Translation

This paper aims to explore the film title translation(FTT) from English to Chinese with an attempt to adapt Skoposthoerie as a guiding theory. Although usually short, film titles have a significance influence on box-offices. However, generally in China, FTT lacks a guiding theory. In fact, FTT is a purposeful activity. Among numerous translation theories, Skopostheorie is appropriate for FTT because, unlike previous theories, it enables the translator to employ various translational strategies to realize the main skopos. Its distinctive feature is"The end justifies the means". Generally, the main purpose of FTT is to attract the target audience(the Chinese audience) to watch the movie. This essay mainly classifies FTT into partial and total literal translation and free translation and, under the guidance of Skopstheorie, tries to probe into different strategies for different title types. In the introduction part, research background is presented. ChapterⅡ is devoted to the overview of Skopostheorie. Chapter Ⅲ is an overview of English film titles. As the core of this essay, Chapter Ⅳ focuses on the application of Skopostheorie to FTT. In order to realize vocative function, which is to call upon the audience to watch movies, intratextual coherence should be achieved. And abundant target film titles are adapted to explain that different strategies are employed for different titles. The conclusion is that Skopostheorie can play an active role in guiding FTT and in terms of Skopostheorie, FTT is in essence a process of renaming and recreation with certain strains to realize its vocative function.

On Children's Literature Translation from the Perspective of Skopos Theory——A Case Study on Harry Potter

The translation of the children's literature,as a branch of literature bears its own distinctive features,which is an attractivefield to study.The flourishing contemporary western translation theories provide new perspectives for the translation studies.Among thetheories,Skopos theory raised by German scholars is unique.It was developed by Hans Vermeer,which has provided theoretical supportfor children's literature translation.The thesis attempts to discuss the translation of children's literature from skopos theory with a casestudy comparing the two Chinese versions of Harry Potter.This paper focuses on whether the two Chinese versions pertain to specificgroup of readers like children and whether they are attractive enough to cater to children by way of choosing simple words,sentences,etc,which underscores that Han's Vermeer skopos theory counts a lot in children's literature translation.By its guidance,the transla-tion of children's literature will arouse more children's interest.

Study on Translator’s Subjectivity from the Perspective of Skopostheorie

With globalization,cultural exchanges among various countries have become increasingly in-depth.As akind of art,films play an important part in cultural communication and exchanges,and because of the introduction of alarge number of foreign films and television shows,more and more audience need subtitle translations to help them un-derstand the plot and cultural connotation of those films.Skopostheorie focuses on the purpose of translation,which is basically consistent with the aim of subtitling translation in order to convey a more comprehensive cultural informationfor the audience with specific cultural background.Meanwhile this paper chooses the film Pride and Prejudice to ana-lyze the characteristics of subtitle translation from the perspective of Skopos theory and to summarize the particulartranslation skills or strategies from this movie.

An Analysis of Strategies of Transaltion of Chinese Advertisement into English from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

With the development of economic globalization, the circulation of commodities within the international market is playing a more and more important role. On the Subtitle Translation of Forrest Gump from the Perspective of Skopostheorie

According to Skopostheorie raised by Hans Vermeer,translation purpose is the key factor for translation,and target re⁃ceiver is the most essential factor for translation purposes.Therefore,translators should follow three rules of Skopostheorie,i.e.skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie,this study took the subtitle translation text of Forrest Gump,analyzed the subtitle translation from the view of the director and his intention,and expectations of target audience,and analyzed the subtitle translation and translation strategies from the perspective of three rules of Skopostheorie.This study found that the Skopostheorie applies to the subtitle translation,and it can improve the quality of subtitle translation,better meet the needs of target audience and promote the spread of Forrest Gump in China.
