Background:Regular physical activity(PA) is an important behavior in improving sleep health. However, the short-term effects of PA on sleep are still controversial. This study aimed to verify the effect of different intensities of PA practiced in different periods of the day on the subsequent sleep night in a population-based cohort of young adults.Methods::Prospective analyses were conducted for PA performed during the day and its effect on the following sleep night using data from the22-year follow-up of the 1993 Pelotas Birth Cohort in Brazil(mean age of participants-22.6 years).Wrist-worn accelerometry was usedto measure both PA and sleep parameters.Regarding intensity,we analyzed the sleep effect of light PA(LPA),moderate PA,and vigorous PA,stratified by sex.Sleep variables were sleep time window(STW;the difference between sleep onset and sleep end),total sleep time(TST;the sum of minutes classified as sleep in STW),and sleep percent(SP;SP=(TST/STW);expressed in percentage). We performed generalized estimating equations using Stata software.Results::The means of STW,TST,and SP were 443.6 min/day,371.1 min/day,and 84%,respectively.Time spent in moderate PA and vigorous PA in the morning and afternoon was not associated with sleep variables.Among men,10 min/day of morning LPA increased TST by2.56 min/day.Among women,10 min/day of morning LPA increased SP by 0.15 percentage points.Afternoon LPA also increased SP by 0.09 percentage points for women.Night PA seems to have an inverse effect on sleep variables for any intensity and both sexes.Conclusion::The effect of PA on sleep health is intrinsically related to the period of the day in which it is performed. The effect magnitude is different between sexes. For better sleep health,it is preferable that PA be performed during the day. 展开更多

While possessing the knowledge of the value of sleep health, young adults often allow their social schedules to encroach upon sleep time. Since March of 2020, the prevalence of COVID-19 reached a rate where quarantine, shelter in place mandates were employed worldwide. The obvious public health necessity of this action, along with the uncertainty with increasing rates of COVID-19 is compounded by distribution issues related to the vaccine. This literature review presents the factors related to young adult sleep followed by psychological consequences of COVID-19 factors. Several studies identify the need to attend to not only the sleep quality needs of young adult sleep but also the increased number of reporting depressed mood. Suggestions for improvement of young adult sleep given the factors of quarantine and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic are provided. 展开更多

Several reports suggest that college students often have atypical sleep patterns and experience poor sleep quality. We examined the effect of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based intervention program to improve sleep quality and overall mental health among college students. The intervention was delivered in the form of e-mail newsletters. Fifty-three students participated in the intervention group, and another 50 students participated in the control group. The intervention group received a lecture on sleep hygiene;once-weekly e-mail newsletters on sleep health topics (sleep hygiene, stimulus control, sleep restriction, sleep titration, and relapse prevention) and were asked to maintain a four-week sleep diary. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a measure of sleep quality, and the Kessler 6, a measure of psychological distress, were administered before the lecture (as the baseline measurement) and again 16 weeks later (follow-up measurement). PSQI and K6 scores were reduced in the intervention group compared with the control group. A CBT-based sleep health program utilizing e-mail newsletters may work to improve sleep quality and mental health. This program may represent a cost effective way for Japanese students to receive treatment for poor sleep and may also serve to prevent psychiatric problems. 展开更多

Respiratory disorders during sleep have as a general characteristic the alteration of the respiratory cycle while sleeping. The most outstanding characteristic of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA) is the partial (hypopnea) or total (apnea) obstruction of the upper airway that occurs repeatedly during sleep. The OSA is global public health issue. When it is not treated, OSA represents a cost two or three times higher of the institutional resources for health. Studies conducted in different countries indicate that the prevalence of the OSA goes from 2% to 10% in general population. The OSA is a serious sleep disorder that has negative implications on multiple systems of the organism. It is associated with hypertension, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. When OSA coexists with a heart disease or ischemic heart disease, it significantly raises the probability of a heart failure. The use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is so far the most effective method for OSA treatment. Intervention at different levels (physiological, educational and psychological intervention) appears to be important in adherence to CPAP treatment. 展开更多

This study aimed to investigate associations between: (a) psychological distress, self-perceived health status and sleep duration among a large representative general population sample;and (b) patterns of sleep duration, physical activity and Body Mass Index among a subgroup of participants who self-reported as being in good health with low psychological distress. Data collected from six waves of the Nation Health Interview Surveys (NHISs) was employed. The results indicated that both psychological distress and self-perceived health status were strong predictors of sleep duration. Participants with high serious psychological distress scores reported sleeping 7 - 8 hours less often than those in low or moderate psychological distress and were also most likely to sleep for less than 6 hours or 9 or more hours. Similar patterns were observed for sleep duration by self-reported health status. Subgroup analysis including only participants in self-reported excellent or very good physical health with low mental distress scores showed that participants who engaged in higher frequencies of vigorous and strengthening exercises were more likely to sleep less than six hours, and participants with a BMI of 25 or higher were also more likely to sleep less than six hours. 展开更多

Aim: This study was aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and mental health of veterans in comparison with that of their spouses and a control group. Methods: Thirty-seven chemical veterans with moderate to severe injury based on the standards of Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs were selected from Mazandaran province. Then, the spouses of 31 of them were selected and 15 of their close relatives also enrolled in the study as the control group. The three groups were evaluated by GHQ for their mental health and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS software 16 and descriptive and analytic statistical methods. Results: The mean score of mental health in veterans, their spouses and close relatives were 44.13 ± 14.4, 34.19 ± 15.2 and 21.73 ± 17.32, respectively. The mean scores of PSQI test in veterans, their spouses, and their close relatives were 10.94 ± 5.6, 8.7 ± 5.5 and 4.27 ± 1 that the difference was statistically significant among the three groups (P ≤ 0.0001). A positive relationship was seen between mental health and sleep quality in veterans and their spouses respectively (r = 0.4, P = 0.02) and (r = 0.83, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Poor sleep quality in chemical veterans compared to their spouses and close relatives could be due to mental health, rather than chemical effects and chronic lung disease. Therefore, treatment of mental health might be an important step to improve the sleep quality of veterans. 展开更多

People experiencing psychosis are more likely to have low levels of physical activity, high levels of sedation, and sleep problems. Intervention: An eight-week intervention;including the provision of a Fitbit and its software apps, sleep hygiene and physical activity guidance information, as well as three discussion and feedback sessions with a clinician. Participants: Out of a sample of 31 using an early intervention psychosis (EIP) service who took part in the intervention, fifteen participants consented to be interviewed—9 (60%) males and 6 (40%) females, age range: 19 - 51 years, average age: 29 years. Method: In-depth interviews investigating patient experience of the intervention and its impact on sleep, exercise, and wellbeing were undertaken. Thematic analysis was applied to analyse the qualitative data and content analysis was used to analyse questions with a yes/no response. Results: Most of the participants actively used the Fitbit and its software apps to gain information, feedback, and set goals to make changes to their lifestyle and daily routines to improve quality of sleep, level of physical activity, and exercise. Conclusion: The intervention was reported to be beneficial, and it is relatively easy and low cost to implement and therefore could be offered by all EIP services. Furthermore, there is potential value for application in services for other psychiatric disorders, where there is often a need to promote healthy lifestyle, physical activity, and effective sleep. 展开更多

Japan’s aging population rate is increasing and healthy life expectancy has decreases by 10 years shorter than average life expectancy. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship among chronic disease, sleep quality, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and activities of daily living in people over 55 years old who live in the community. Subjects were 161 persons aged 57 to 90 years who were treated with chronic disease in the outpatient department of the A hospital. Exclusion criteria included patients with dementia, cancer and severe heart disease. The survey evaluation questionnaires included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), HRQOL by Short-Form 8 Health Survey (SF-8), and activities of daily living. Variables associated with quality of sleep, HRQOL in univariate analysis with p < 0.05 were entered into multivariate analysis using logistic regression with a stepwise forward selection procedure to determine independent variables and their association with major causes. The logistic regression analysis was done using SPSS software and the post-hoc power of the study was estimated using G*power. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. The risk factor of poor sleep quality was because of history of cancer [odds ratio (OR): 3.53, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06 - 11.77], and insomnia (OR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.55 - 6.79). The risk factors of poor physical HRQOL were motor disease (OR: 2.62, 95% CI: 1.36 - 5.07), respiratory disease (OR: 3.24, 95% CI: 1.27 - 8.26) and having pain (OR: 11.71, 95% CI: 5.35 - 25.66). In addition, anemia was found to be a risk factor of poor mental HRQOL (OR: 4.87, 95% CI: 1.11 - 21.33). The feeling-for-their-body-age (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.15-0.59) was as “younger than actual age” and advanced the risk factor of poor sleep quality. In addition, feeling-for-their-age (OR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.21 - 0.92) resulted in reduced risk factor of poor physical HRQOL. The risk factor of poor sleep quality was due to a patient with history of cancer. The factor for good sleep quality and the good factor for physical HRQOL were indications of feeling younger than the actual age. 展开更多

Introduction: Sleep disorders among professional drivers are a major road safety problem. They cause fatigue and drowsiness at the wheel, which can lead to road traffic accidents and even accidents at work. The aim of this study was to assess sleep disorders among professional drivers of oil tankers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study carried out from 11 April 2020 to 11 September 2020 in the national hydrocarbon company’s fuel depot. All the drivers present at the time were included and accomplished a questionnaire incorporating the commonly scales using to assess sleep disorders, sleep quality and sleep apnoea. Data analysis using R 3.6.1 software enabled to perform univariate and multivariate analyses to identify associated factors. Adjusted odd ratios were used to measure the strength of association. The significance level chosen was p ≤ 0.05. Results: All the 339 respondents were male. A proportion of 33.6% suffered from insomnia, including 12.7% with moderate to severe insomnia, and 18.58% were at risk of sleep apnoea. On the Epworth scale, 26.6% of drivers showed sleep debt and 4.1% excessive daytime sleepiness. The risk factors associated with insomnia were the use of psychostimulants. A history of diabetes and insomnia were risk factors associated with sleep apnoea syndrome. Conclusion: The prevalence of sleep disturbance and insomnia among the respondents were 52.2% and 33.6% respectively. Use of psychostimulants was the identified risk factor. The prevalence of SAS was 4.72%, with diabetes and insomnia as associated factors. 展开更多

Background: Self-assessed health (SAH) is used as a common method of sociology research to understand the implications of self-reported health and the link to social factors like education, income, and occupation. The paper explores the impact of socio-economic and health indicators on self-assessed health in the middle-aged to the senior population in a rural community in Thailand. Methods: Primary data were collected after conducting a randomized sampling for 100 people using direct interviews in two locations within the sub-district of Phai Tha Pho, Thailand. The target demographic was the middle-age to elderly population. A logit model was applied to the collected samples. Results: The study highlights that higher education, income, and sleep are high predictors for positive SAH while high blood sugar level has significant adverse effects on SAH. Detection of metabolic syndrome further indicates degraded overall health perception over time. Conclusion: The study demonstrated the relationship between socio-economic indicators and illnesses alongside individual SAH in rural Thailand. Accordingly, policies have been proposed that include targeted subsidies for healthy food alternatives, promoting work-rest balance at all levels, and an expansion of sub-district education up to secondary school. SAH can be performed regularly and expanded across communities including areas of low-income living due to its low implementation costs. It could also be used as a tool to support the government’s public health initiatives complementing the existing five-year direct health check-up programme. A comparative study of SAH across regions is recommended for future research. 展开更多

In Japan, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a major therapeutic intervention for ischemic heart disease (IHD). Previous studies suggested that an association of the risk of IHD caused by sleep duration was related to factors closely associated with daily activities. However, in Japan, there is no study about this relationship objectively measured using the actigraphy in patients with IHD. Moreover, there is little reported data about sleep condition and early outcomes of patient’s Health-Related Quality of Life (QOL) after PCI. This study determines the correlations between sleep conditions and QOL (measured by SF36 version 2) of 25 patients with IHD who underwent elective PCI. Data were collected seven days after PCI using night-sleep condition. Using Spearman’s rank test, the results revealed positive correlation between vitality score and longest sleep duration (ρ = 0.43, p = 0.031): social functioning (SF) score and duration of night-time sleep (ρ = 0.42, p = 0.037);total sleep duration (ρ = 0.45, p = 0.026), and longest sleep duration (ρ = 0.44, p = 0.024);mental health score and longest sleep duration (ρ = 0.54, p = 0.006). However, negative correlation was found between physical functioning score and arousal during sleep (ρ = -0.44, p = 0.027). Sleep condition was significantly correlated with QOL. In particular, SF score was positively related to night-time sleep. This seems to indicate that SF score might be related to night-time sleep condition. Moreover, the longest sleep durations were correlated with the mental component summary. The results of the study suggest that not only the length of whole sleep durations leads to better QOL, but also the increase the amount of uninterrupted sleep. 展开更多

Background: Preliminary evidence among adults suggests that the ways in which individuals think about their physical activity(PA) behavior is more closely associated with their well-being than self-reported PA. This study therefore aimed to examine whether and how self-reported PA and personal beliefs about suffbcient PA are associated with sleep and psychological functioning in a sample of Swiss adolescents, using both cross-sectional and prospective data. Methods: An overall sample of 864 vocational students(368 girls, 17.98± 1.36 years, mean ± SD) was followed prospectively over a 10-month period. At each measurement occasion, participants filled in a series of self-report questiocnaires to assess their PA levels, their personal beliefs about whether or not they engage in sufficient PA, sleep(insomnia symptoms, sleep quality, sleep-onset latency, and number of awakenings),and psychological functioning(depressive symptoms, quality of life, perceived stress, and mental toughness). Results: Adolescents who believe that they are sufficiently physically active to maintain good health reported more restoring sleep. No differen?ces in sleep were found between adolescents who meet PA recommendationsvs. those who do not. Additionally, adolescents who believe that they were sufficiently physically active also reported better psychological functioning. This close relationship between adolescents5 beliefs about their PA involvement and their sleep and psychological functioning was corroborated in the prospective analyses. Conclusion: Cognitive factors should be studied more intensively when elucidating the relationship among PA, sleep, and psychological functioning in young people, particularly when aiming to develop new exercise interventions targeting psychological outcomes. 展开更多
