Human activities to improve the quality of life have accelerated the natural rate of soil erosion. In turn, these natural disasters have taken a great impact on humans.Human activities, particularly the conversion of vegetated land into agricultural land and built-up area, stand out as primary contributors to soil erosion. The present study investigated the risk of soil erosion in the Irga watershed located on the eastern fringe of the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Jharkhand,India, which is dominated by sandy loam and sandy clay loam soil with low soil organic carbon(SOC)content. The study used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE)and Geographical Information System(GIS)technique to determine the rate of soil erosion. The five parameters(rainfall-runoff erosivity(R)factor, soil erodibility(K)factor, slope length and steepness(LS)factor,cover-management(C)factor,and support practice(P)factor)of the RUSLE were applied to present a more accurate distribution characteristic of soil erosion in the Irga watershed. The result shows that the R factor is positively correlated with rainfall and follows the same distribution pattern as the rainfall. The K factor values in the northern part of the study area are relatively low, while they are relatively high in the southern part. The mean value of the LS factor is 2.74,which is low due to the flat terrain of the Irga watershed. There is a negative linear correlation between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)and the C factor, and the high values of the C factor are observed in places with low NDVI.The mean value of the P factor is 0.210,with a range from 0.000 to 1.000.After calculating all parameters,we obtained the average soil erosion rate of 1.43 t/(hm^(2)•a),with the highest rate reaching as high as 32.71 t/(hm^(2)•a).Therefore,the study area faces a low risk of soil erosion. However, preventative measures are essential to avoid future damage to productive and constructive activities caused by soil erosion. This study also identifies the spatial distribution of soil erosion rate, which will help policy-makers to implement targeted soil erosion control measures. 展开更多

Soil erosion has been recognized as a critical environmental issue worldwide. While previous studies have primarily focused on watershed-scale soil erosion vulnerability from a natural factor perspective, there is a notable gap in understanding the intricate interplay between natural and socio-economic factors, especially in the context of spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear impacts of human-land interactions. To address this, our study evaluates the soil erosion vulnerability at a provincial scale, taking Hubei Province as a case study to explore the combined effects of natural and socio-economic factors. We developed an evaluation index system based on 15 indicators of soil erosion vulnerability:exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability. In addition, the combination weighting method was applied to determine index weights, and the spatial interaction was analyzed using spatial autocorrelation, geographical temporally weighted regression and geographical detector. The results showed an overall decreasing soil erosion intensity in Hubei Province during 2000 and 2020.The soil erosion vulnerability increased before 2000 and then. The areas with high soil erosion vulnerability were mainly confined in the central and southern regions of Hubei Province(Xiantao,Tianmen,Qianjiang and Ezhou)with obvious spatial aggregation that intensified over time.Natural factors(habitat quality index)had negative impacts on soil erosion vulnerability, whereas socio-economic factors(population density)showed substantial spatial variability in their influences. There was a positive correlation between soil erosion vulnerability and erosion intensity, with the correlation coefficients ranging from-0.41 and 0.93.The increase of slope was found to enhance the positive correlation between soil erosion vulnerability and intensity. 展开更多

Soil erosion is a crucial geo-environmental hazard worldwide that affects water quality and agriculture, decreases reservoir storage capacity due to sedimentation, and increases the danger of flooding and landslides. Thus, this study uses geospatial modeling to produce soil erosion susceptibility maps(SESM)for the Hangu region,Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KPK),Pakistan. The Hangu region, located in the Kohat Plateau of KPK,Pakistan,is particularly susceptible to soil erosion due to its unique geomorphological and climatic characteristics. Moreover, the Hangu region is characterized by a combination of steep slopes, variable rainfall patterns, diverse land use,and distinct soil types, all of which contribute to the complexity and severity of soil erosion processes. These factors necessitate a detailed and region-specific study to develop effective soil conservation strategies. In this research,we detected and mapped 1013 soil erosion points and prepared 12 predisposing factors(elevation, aspect, slope,Normalized Differentiate Vegetation Index(NDVI),drainage network, curvature,Land Use Land Cover(LULC),rainfall, lithology, contour, soil texture, and road network)of soil erosion using GIS platform.Additionally,GIS-based statistical models like the weight of evidence(WOE)and frequency ratio(FR)were applied to produce the SESM for the study area. The SESM was reclassified into four classes,i.e.,low,medium,high,and very high zone. The results of WOE for SESM show that 16.39%,33.02%,29.27%,and 21.30%of areas are covered by low, medium, high, and very high zones, respectively. In contrast, the FR results revealed that 16.50%,24.33%,35.55%,and 23.59%of the areas are occupied by low, medium, high, and very high classes.Furthermore, the reliability of applied models was evaluated using the Area Under Curve(AUC)technique. The validation results utilizing the area under curve showed that the success rate curve(SRC)and predicted rate curve(PRC)for WOE are 82%and 86%,respectively,while SRC and PRC for FR are 85%and 96%,respectively.The validation results revealed that the FR model performance is better and more reliable than the WOE. 展开更多

The Langat River Basin in Malaysia is vulnerable to soil erosion risks because of its exposure to intensive land use activities and its topography, which primarily consists of steep slopes and mountainous areas.Furthermore, climate change frequently exposes this basin to drought, which negatively affects soil and water conservation. However, recent studies have rarely shown how soil reacts to drought, such as soil erosion. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between drought and soil erosion in the Langat River Basin. We analyzed drought indices using Landsat 8 satellite images in November 2021,and created the normalized differential water index(NDWI)via Landsat 8 data to produce a drought map.We used the revised universal soil loss equation(RUSLE)model to predict soil erosion. We verified an association between the NDWI and soil erosion data using a correlation analysis. The results revealed that the southern and northern regions of the study area experienced drought events. We predicted an average annual soil erosion of approximately 58.11 t/(hm^(2)·a).Analysis of the association between the NDWI and soil erosion revealed a strong positive correlation, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.86.We assumed that the slope length and steepness factor was the primary contributor to soil erosion in the study area.As a result, these findings can help authorities plan effective measures to reduce the impacts of drought and soil erosion in the future. 展开更多

Collapsing erosion is a unique phenomenon commonly observed on the granite residue hillslopes in the tropical and subtropical regions of southern China, characterized by its abrupt occurrence and significant erosion volumes. However, the impacts of soil crust conditions on the erosion of colluvial deposits with granite residual soils have only been studied to a limited extent. To address this issue, this study investigates the impacts of three soil crust conditions(i.e.,without crust,10-minute crust, and 20-minute crust)on gully morphology, rainfall infiltration, and runoff and sediment yield during slope erosion of colluvial deposits with granite residues(classified as Acrisols)in Yudu County,Ganzhou City,Jiangxi Province,China, using simulated rainfall tests and photographic methods. The results showed that as the strength of the soil crust increased, the capacity of moisture infiltration and the width and depth of the gully as well as the sediment concentration and yield ratio decreased;at the same time, the runoff ratio increased. The sediment yield in the without-crust test was found to be 1.24 and 1.43 times higher than that observed in the 10-minute crust and 20-minute crust tests, respectively. These results indicate that soil crusts can effectively prevent slope erosion and moisture infiltration, while providing valuable insights for the management of soil erosion in natural environments. 展开更多

As one of typical areas in the world, northern Chinese Loess Plateau experiences serious wind-water erosion, which leads to widespread land degradation.During the past decades,an ecological engineering was implemented to reduce soil erosion and improve soil protection in this area. Thus,it is necessary to recognize the basic characteristics of soil protection for sustainable prevention and wind-water erosion control in the later stage. In this study, national wind erosion survey model and revised universal soil loss equation were used to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces of soil protection in the wind-water erosion area of Chinese Loess Plateau during 2000–2020.Results revealed that:(1)during 2000–2020,total amount of soil protection reached up to 15.47×10^(8) t,which was realized mainly through water and soil conservation, accounting for 63.20%of the total;(2)soil protection was improved, with increases in both soil protection amount and soil retention rate. The amounts of wind erosion reduction showed a decrease trend, whereas the retention rate of wind erosion reduction showed an increase trend. Both water erosion reduction amount and retention rate showed increasing trends;and(3)the combined effects of climate change and human activities were responsible for the improvement of soil protection in the wind-water erosion area of Chinese Loess Plateau. The findings revealed the spatiotemporal patterns and driving forces of soil protection, and proposed strategies for future soil protection planning in Chinese Loess Plateau, which might provide valuable references for soil erosion control in other wind-water erosion areas of the world. 展开更多

Water erosion is a serious problem that leads to soil degradation, loss, and the destruction of structures.Assessing the risk of erosion and determining the affected areas has become crucial in order to understand the main factors influencing its evolution and to minimize its impacts. This study focuses on evaluating the risk of erosion in the Assif el mal watershed, which is located in the High Atlas Mountains. The Erosion Potential Model(EPM)is used to estimate soil losses depending on various parameters such as lithology, hydrology, topography, and morphometry.Geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques are employed to map areas with high erosive potential and their relationship with the distribution of factors involved.Different digital elevation models are also used in this study to highlight the impact of data quality on the accuracy of the results. The findings reveal that approximately 59%of the total area in the Assif el mal basin has low to very low potential for soil losses, while 22%is moderately affected and 19.9%is at high to very high risk.It is therefore crucial to implement soil conservation measures to mitigate and prevent erosion risks. 展开更多

Savanna regions in Nigeria face environmental degradation and barren land, negatively impacting food and agricultural productivity. Inter-rill erosion occurs due to raindrop impact and transport, particularly on hill slopes. A study was conducted using a sprinkler rainfall simulator and plot experiment to study soil erosion processes. Soil samples were collected from four farms in Gidan Kwanu, with varying moisture content. Sand content ranged from 46.0% to 76.20%, silt from 11.30% to 23.50%, and clay from 11.0% to 30.0%. Uncultivated and bare land had a higher average porosity (15.47% and 14.99%), while cultivated land had lower porosity (14.4%). The study found that most people in Gidan-Kwanu primarily practice farming, which is season-dependent and rain-fed. Soil type and texture significantly contribute to inter-rill erosion, with cultivated and uncultivated soil being more resistant to erosion than bare land soil. Biochar has emerged as a promising soil amendment for improving soil structure.Yet,its impact on rainfall-induced soil erosion varies across individual studies. To address this gap,we conducted a statistical meta-analysis of 174 paired comparisons from 45 published studies to integratedly evaluate the impacts of biochar on rainfall-induced soil erosion through biochar and soil properties,as well as experimental conditions.Overall, biochar significantly reduced soil erosion by 27.86%.The response ratio(lnRR)of biochar-induced soil erosion exhibited significant variability across different subgroups.Concerning biochar properties,a more favorable influence was observed in other sources biochar(e.g.,manure and sewage sludge biochar)compared to wood based and crop waste biochar, and those produced at lower pyrolysis temperatures(<500°C).Increasing biochar dosage was not consistently effective. The optimal range was 0.8%–2%,resulting in a 36.07%reduction in soil erosion.Regarding the soil properties,a higher sand/clay ratio of soil significantly enhanced the performance of biochar(p<0.0001).Specifically,an insignificant effect was observed in fine-grained soils, whereas the highest reduction of 52.97%was noted in coarse-grained soils.Moreover,long-term field experiments induced greater reductions in soil erosion with biochar(35.30%)compared to short-term laboratory studies(29.62%and 12.59%).This meta-analysis demonstrates that biochar,as a potential soil amendment, could effectively mitigate rainfall-induced soil erosion by considering a combination of soil properties along with specific biochar properties. 展开更多

The degree to which soil is susceptible to erosion is measured as soil erodibility which can be influenced by different land management options. This study evaluated the dynamics of soil erodibility to tillage and soil amendments in a maize field under five consecutive cropping cycles.Tillage treatments were no-till,minimum,conventional,and grassland fallow(control). The soil amendment treatments used were no amendment(control),NPK,poultry manure(PM),and1/2NPK+1/2PM and these treatments were applied to all the tillage treatments including no-till.The study showed that tillage and soil amendment interactions had significant effects on soil erodibility(p<0.05).The mean erodibility values ranged from 13×10^(−3) to 24×10^(−3) Mg·h·MJ^(−1)·mm^(−1) in the following order:control<conventional tillage<minimum tillage<no-till.For the soil amendments, erodibility varied from NPK>poultry manure=1/2NPK+1/2PM>control(undisturbed grassland).Regardless of the type of soil amendment, the soil erodibility under conventional tillage was significantly lower than that under no-till and minimum tillage systems. The relationship between erodibility and easily measured soil parameters, such as%sand greater than 100μm,%silt plus very fine sand, clay, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, were significant at p<0.05.The higher contribution(86%)of sand and silt to the variation in erodibility indicates that any other indices of erodibility based on particle size distribution, apart from the nomograph, could satisfactorily predict erodibility values. 展开更多

Both soil organic carbon (SOC) and iron (Fe) oxide content, among other factors, drive the formation and stability of soil aggregates. However, the mechanism of these drivers in greenhouse soil fertilized with organic fertilizer is not well understood. In a 3-year field experiment, we aimed to investigate the factors which drive the stability of soil aggregates in greenhouse soil.To explore the impact of organic fertilizer on soil aggregates, we established four treatments:no fertilization (CK);inorganic fertilizer (CF);organic fertilizer (OF);and combined application of inorganic and organic fertilizers(COF).The application of organic fertilizer significantly enhanced the stability of aggregates, that is it enhanced the mean weight diameter, geometric mean diameter and aggregate content (%) of>0.25 mm aggregate fractions.OF and COF treatments increased the concentration of SOC, especially the aliphatic-C, aromatic-C and polysaccharide-C components of SOC, particularly in>0.25 mm aggregates.Organic fertilizer application significantly increased the content of free Fe(Fed), reactive Fe (Feo), and non-crystalline Fe in both bulk soil and aggregates.Furthermore, non-crystalline Fe showed a positive correlation with SOC content in both bulk soil and aggregates. Both non-crystalline Fe and SOC were significantly positively correlated with>2 mm mean weight diameter.Overall, we believe that the increase of SOC, aromatic-C, and non-crystal ine Fe concentrations in soil after the application of organic fertilizer is the reason for improving soil aggregate stability. 展开更多

Organic material combined with inorganic fertilizer has been shown to greatly improve crop yield and maintain soil fertility globally. However, it remains unclear if crop yield and soil fertility can be sustained in the long term under the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers. Three long-term field trials were conducted to investigate the effects of organic amendments on the grain sustainable yield index(SYI), soil fertility index(SFI)and nutrient balance in maize–wheat cropping systems of central and southern China during 1991–2019. Five treatments were included in the trials: 1) no fertilization(control);2) balanced mineral fertilization(NPK);3) NPK plus manure(NPKM);4) high dose of NPK plus manure(1.5NPKM);and 5) NPK plus crop straw(NPKS). Over time, the grain yields of wheat and maize showed an increasing trend in all four fertilization treatments at the Yangling(YL) and Zhengzhou(ZZ) locations, while they declined at Qiyang(QY). The grain yield in the NPKM and 1.5NPKM treatments gradually exceeded that of the NPK and NPKS treatments at the QY site. The largest SYI was recorded in the NPKM treatment across the three sites, suggesting that inorganic fertilizer combined with manure can effectively improve crop yield sustainability. Higher SYI values were recorded at the YL and ZZ sites than at the QY site, possibly because the soil was more acid at QY. The key factors affecting grain yield were soil available phosphorus(AP) and available potassium(AK) at the YL and ZZ sites, and pH and AP at the QY site. All fertilization treatments resulted in soil N and P surpluses at the three sites, but soil K surpluses were recorded only at the QY site. The SFI was greater in the 1.5NPKM, NPKM and NPKS treatments than in the NPK treatment by 13.3–40.0 and 16.4–63.6% at the YL and ZZ sites, respectively, and was significantly higher in the NPKM and 1.5NPKM treatments than in the NPK and NPKS treatments at the QY site. A significant, positive linear relationship was found between SFI and crop yield, and SYI and nutrient balance, indicating that grain yield and its sustainability significantly increased with increasing soil fertility. The apparent N, P and K balances positively affected SFI.This study suggests that the appropriate amount of manure mixed with mineral NPK fertilizer is beneficial to the development of sustainable agriculture, which effectively increases the crop yield and yield sustainability by improving soil fertility. 展开更多

Biological soil crusts(BSCs)play crucial roles in improving soil fertility and promoting plants settlement and reproduction in arid areas. However, the specific effects of BSCs on growth status and nutrient accumulation of plants are still unclear in different arid areas. This study analyzed the effects of three different BSCs treatments(without crust(WC),intact crust(IC),and broken crust(BC))on the growth, inorganic nutrient absorption, and organic solute synthesis of three typical desert plants(Grubovia dasyphylla(Fisch.&C.A.Mey.)Freitag&G.Kadereit,Nitraria tangutorum Bobrov, and Caragana koraiensis Kom.)in the Minqin desert-oasis ecotone of Northwest China. Results showed that the effects of three BSCs treatments on seed emergence and survival of three plants varied with seed types. The IC treatment significantly hindered the emergence and survival of seeds, while the BC treatment was more conducive to seed emergence and survival of plants.BSCs significantly promoted the growth of three plants, but their effects on plant growth varied at different stages of the growth.Briefly, the growth of G.dasyphylla was affected by BSCs in early stage, but the effects on the growth of G.dasyphylla significantly weakened in the middle and late stages. However, the growth of N.tangutorum and C.koraiensis only showed differences at the middle and late stages, with a significant enhancement in growth.Analysis of variance showed that BSCs,plant species, growth period, and their interactions had significant effects on the biomass and root:shoot ratio of three plants.BSC significantly affected the nutrients absorption and organic solute synthesis in plants.Specifically,BSCs significantly promoted nitrogen(N)absorption in plants and increased plant adaptability in N poor desert ecosystems, but had no significant effects on phosphorus(P)absorption. The effects of BSCs on inorganic nutrient absorption and organic solute synthesis in plants varied significantly among different plant species. The results suggest that BSCs have significant effects on the growth and nutrient accumulation of desert plants, which will provide theoretical basis for exploring the effects of BSCs on desert plant diversity, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem management measures in arid and semi-arid areas. 展开更多

Shotcrete is one of the common solutions for shallow sliding. It works by forming a protective layer with high strength and cementing the loose soil particles on the slope surface to prevent shallow sliding. However, the solidification time of conventional cement paste is long when shotcrete is used to treat cohesionless soil landslide. The idea of reinforcing slope with polyurethane solidified soil(i.e.,mixture of polyurethane and sand)was proposed.Model tests and finite element analysis were carried out to study the effectiveness of the proposed new method on the emergency treatment of cohesionless soil landslide.Surcharge loading on the crest of the slope was applied step by step until landslide was triggered so as to test and compare the stability and bearing capacity of slope models with different conditions. The simulated slope displacements were relatively close to the measured results, and the simulated slope deformation characteristics were in good agreement with the observed phenomena, which verifies the accuracy of the numerical method.Under the condition of surcharge loading on the crest of the slope, the unreinforced slope slid when the surcharge loading exceeded 30 k Pa,which presented a failure mode of local instability and collapse at the shallow layer of slope top.The reinforced slope remained stable even when the surcharge loading reached 48 k Pa.The displacement of the reinforced slope was reduced by more than 95%.Overall,this study verifies the effectiveness of polyurethane in the emergency treatment of cohesionless soil landslide and should have broad application prospects in the field of geological disasters concerning the safety of people's live. 展开更多

Soil nitrogen(N)is the main limiting nutrient for plant growth, which is sensitive to variations in the soil oxygen environment. To provide insights into plant N accumulation and yield under aerated and drip irrigation,a greenhouse tomato experiment was conducted with six treatments, including three fertilization types:inorganic fertilizer(NPK);organic fertilizer(OM);chemical(75%of applied N)+organic fertilizer(25%)(NPK+OM)under drip irrigation(DI)and aerated irrigation(AI)methods.Under Al,total soil carbon mineralization(C_(min))was significantly higher(by 5.7-7.0%)than under DI irrigation.C_(min)in the fertilizer treatments followed the order NPK+OM>OM>NPK under both AI and DI.Potentially mineralizable C(C_(0))and N(N_(0))was greater under AI than under DI.Gross N mineralization, gross nitrification, and NH_(4)^(+)immobilization rates were significantly higher under the AINPK treatment than the DINPK treatment by 2.58-3.27-,1.25-1.44-,and 1-1.26-fold,respectively.These findings demonstrated that AI and the addition of organic fertilizer accelerated the turnover of soil organic matter and N transformation processes, thereby enhancing N availability. Moreover, the combination of AI and organic fertilizer application was found to promote root growth(8.4-10.6%),increase the duration of the period of rapid N accumulation(ΔT),and increase the maximum N accumulation rate(V_(max)),subsequently encouraging aboveground dry matter accumulation.Consequently, the AI treatment yield was significantly greater(by 6.3-12.4%)than under the DI treatment.Further,N partial factor productivity(NPFP)and N harvest index(NHI)were greater under AI than under DI,by 6.3 to 12.4%,and 4.6 to 8.1%,respectively.The rankings of yield and NPFP remained consistent, with NPK+OM>OM>NPK under both AI and DI treatments. These results highlighted the positive impacts of AI and organic fertilizer application on soil N availability,N uptake, and overall crop yield in tomato. The optimal management measure was identified as the AINPK+OM treatment, which led to more efficient N management, better crop growth, higher yield, and more sustainable agricultural practices. 展开更多

The C factor in Universal Soil loss Equation reflecting the effect of vegetation on soil erosion by water is one of the important parameters for estimating soil erosion rate and selecting appropriate land use patterns. In this study, the C factor for nine types of grassland and woodland was estimated from 195 plot-year observation data of six groups of soil erosion experiments on Loess Plateau. The result indicates that the effects of woodland and grassland on soil erosion keep approximately uniform after two or three years' growth. The estimated woodland C factor ranges from 0.004 to 0.164, and the grassland C factor ranges from 0.071 to 0.377, showing that the effect of woodland and grassland on soil conservation is greatly better than that of cropland. The study results can be used to compare or estimate the soil loss from land with different vegetation cover, and are the useful references for land use pattern selection and the project of returning cropland to forest or grassland. 展开更多

Similar to soil loss by erosion, soil nitrogen (N) loss by erosion in small catchments is affected by vegetation coverage. The practice of comprehensive management for catchments mainly by adjusting cropland, grassland and woodland areas was widely adopted to reduce soil and water loss in catchments of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Three experiments under natural and artificial rainfall conditions on N loss by erosion for a model catchment and for an actual catchment in Zhifanggou of Ansai County in China was performed to determine the relationships between comprehensive management and N loss by runoff in small catchments. The results for vegetation coverage of 60%, 40%, 20% and 0 show that runoff loss of ammonium, nitrate, and total N were 87.08, 44.31, 25.16, 13.71 kg/km(2); 85.50, 74.06, 63.95, 56.23 kg/km(2); and 0.18, 1.18, 1.98, 7.51 t/ km(2), respectively. Due to reduction in the size of cropped area on steeply sloping land, soil N loss by erosion in the catchments was decreased by 15.8% as compared with that in 1992, i.e., from 8 758.5 kg in 1992 to 7 562.2 kg in 1998. Whereas, catchments act as a filter for ammonium and nitrate in rain, the catchment filtering effects on nitrate is remarkably higher than that on ammonium. The enrichment of < 20 mum aggregate in sediment results in the enrichment of organic matter and total N in flood sediment. Greater vegetation coverage can effectively decrease soil erosion and total N loss. However, soil mineral N loss increased as vegetation coverage increased. 展开更多
