By comparing the results of these two experiments, significant increases of 5%, 27%, and 24%, were found in the subpolar Southern Ocean when excluding the OSC in the IOS calculation for the ocean surface stress, upwelling, and downwelling, respectively. Excluding the OSC in the IOS calculation also visibly strengthens the total mechanical energy input to the OSC by about 16%, and increases the eddy kinetic energy and mean kinetic energy by about38% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, the response of the meridional overturning circulation in the Southern Ocean yields respective increases of about 16% and 15% for the upper and lower branches;and the subpolar gyres are also found to considerably intensify, by about 12%, 11%, and 11% in the Weddell Gyre, the Ross Gyre, and the Australian-Antarctic Gyre, respectively. The strengthened ocean circulations and Ekman pumping result in a warmer sea surface temperature(SST), and hence an incremental surface heat loss. The increased sea ice drift and warm SST lead to an expansion of the sea ice area and a reduction of sea ice volume. These results emphasize the importance of OSCs in the air-sea-ice interactions on the global ocean circulations and the mass balance of Antarctic ice shelves, and this component may become more significant as the rapid change of Antarctic sea ice.展开更多

The concentrations of CO2 in surfacewater of the survey regions would mostly present lower than those in the atmosphere. A significant biologicaldriving force could also been observed in summer waters in both of the above oceans. Air to sea CO2 fluxes were alsocalculated to compare oceanic uptake capacity of CO2 in both oceans with the world oceans using Liss, Wanninkhof, and Jacobss methods. The averaged CO2 fluxes of air to sea in the western Arctic Ocean or in the MSIZ of theSouthern Ocean doubled that in the world oceans.展开更多

The disequilibria between thorium-234 and its parent uranium-238 in upper layer was used to derive the averaged residence time of thorium-234, which decreased along with the latitude to the south and a minimum value, 1 - 8 d for particulate thorium-234 and 29 - 48 d for dissolved thorium-234, appeared at the medium latitude station, and the export fluxes of thorium-234 were calculated too and 'a maximum value, 0. 35 -0. 63 Bq/(m^3 · d) for the particulate thorium-234 and 0. 44 -0. 65 Bq/ (m^3 ·d) for the dissolved thorium-234, appeared at the same station. The export fluxes of particulate organic carbon at different water columns were derived by two methods with irreversible scavenging model, and the averaged values were 104. 7 mmol/ ( m2 · d ) ( E method) and 120. 6 mmol/( m2·d ) ( B method ), respectively, indicating that a relatively high new production would exist in summer in the Prydz Bay where it will play a potential significant role in sequestering the absorption CO2 to deeper ocean.展开更多

The results showed that there was marked feature of spatial zonation in the sea areas investigated. In the Prydz Bay and its adjacent continental shelf, the biomass and productivity of phytoplankton were high; those of continental slope and open ocean area were obviously low. The nutrient concentration had opposite distribution trend, due to the consumption of phytoplankton. It mainly affected by the vertical stability of water column, grazing pressure of zooplankton, temperature and light etc. The results of size-fractionation showed that the average contribution of netplankton to total chlorophyll a in studied sea areas was 52.2 %, those of nano- and picoplankton were 29.4 % and 18.4 %, respectively. The average contribution of netplankton to total primary production was 52.4 %, those of nano- and picoplankton were 28.7 % and 18.9 %, separately. It is same as previous conclusion that the contribution of picoplankton to productivity is slightly larger than that to biomass of phytoplankton communities. The average new production and f-ratio were 230.6 mg/ (m(2.)d) and 0.43, respectively.展开更多

Both eddy kinetic energy(EKE) and eddy detection algorithm are used to study the eddy properties in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. Consistent with previous works, the maps of the EKE illustrate that higher energy confines to the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone(APFZ) and decreases progressively from west to east. It also shows that the most significant increase in the EKE occurs in the western and central parts of the Pacific sector, where the baroclinicity of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(ACC) is much stronger. Statistical eddy properties reveal that both of the spatial pattern and interannual variation of the EKE are primarily due to the eddy amplitude and the eddy rotational speed, rather than the eddy number or the eddy radius. In general, these results furtherly confirm that anomalous westerly wind forcing associated with the positive Southern Annular Mode(SAM) index enhances the Southern Ocean eddy activity by strengthening the eddy properties.展开更多

Using the field data obtained in these surveys and the results from remote sensing and numerical models, Chinese physical oceanographers have investigated the water masses, fronts and circulation patterns in the Southern Ocean. The results of nearly 30 years of research are summarized in this paper. Most oceanographic observations by Chinese researchers have been con- ducted in Prydz Bay and the adjacent seas. CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth) data, collected during the past 20 years, have been applied to study several features of the water masses in this region: The spatial variation of warm summer surface water, the northward extension of shelf water, the flow of ice shelf water from the cavity beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, the upweUing of the Circumpolar Deep Water, and the formation of the Antarctic Bottom Water. The circulation and its dynamic factors have been analyzed with dynamic heights calculated from CTD data as well as by numerical models. The structure and strength of the fronts in the southeast Indian Ocean and the Drake Passage were investigated with underway XBT/XCTD (Expendable Bathythermo- graph/Expendable CTD) and ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data. Their interaunual variations have been determined and the factors of influence, especially the atmospheric forcing and mesoscale oceanic processes, were studied using remote sens- ing data. The dynamic mechanism of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) was analyzed by theoretical models. The transport and pattern of the ACC have been well reproduced by coupled sea ice-ocean models. Additional details of ACC variability were identified based on satellite altimeter data. The response of the ACC to climate change was studied using reanalysis data. Prospects for future research are presented at the end of this paper.展开更多

The highest lipase secretion of this strain is observed at 5 degreesC and this temperature is also for optimal growth. Tween 80 and olive oil enhance secretion of lipase. The optimal temperature and pH for lipase activity are 35 degreesC and 7.5 degreesC respectively. At 0degreesC, the lipase still has 37% relative enzyme activity. The lipase shows high thermolability, more than 50% activity lost after incubation at 60 degreesC for 15 min. EDTA has no effect on lipase activity, indicating the lipase activity is independent of divalent cation. In contrast, the lipase activity is inhibited drastically by Cu2+ and Zn2+.展开更多

Research in chemical oceanography constitutes one of the primary missions of the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CH1NARE). This paper reviews nearly 30 years of Chinese Antarctic expeditions, focusing on the major progress achieved in chemical oceanographic research. Specifically, the sea-surface distributions and air-sea fluxes of CO2 and N20 are considered, and the transport, flux, and budget of organic matter are investigated based on isotopes in the Southern Ocean, especially in Prydz Bay. In addition, the nutrient distribution and deep-water particle export in Prydz Bay and the study of aerosol heavy metal characteristics are considered. Finally, the prospects for future Chinese Antarctic chemical oceanographic research are outlined.展开更多

A validation shows that identified cyclone tracks are in good agreement with a available analyzed cyclone product. The climatological characteristics of the Southern Ocean cyclones are then analyzed, including track, number, density, intensity, deepening rate and explosive events. An analysis shows that the number of cyclones in the Southern Ocean has increased for 1979-2013, but only statistically significant in summer. Coincident with the circumpolar trough, a single high-density band of cyclones is observed in 55^-67~S, and cyclone density has generally increased in north of this band for 1979-2013, except summer. The intensity of up to 70% cyclones in the Southern Ocean is less than 980 hPa, and only a few cyclones with pressure less than 920 hPa are detected for 1979-2013. Further analysis shows that a high frequency of explosive cyclones is located in the band of 45^-55~S, and the Atlantic Ocean sector has much higher frequent occurrence of the explosive cyclones than that in the Pacific Ocean sector. Additionally, the relationship between cyclone activities in the Southern Ocean and the Southern Annular Mode is discussed.展开更多

In the South Indian and Atlantic Oceans, there is a subtropical dipole pattern slanted in the southwest-northeast direction. In the South Pacific Ocean, a meridional tripole structure emerges, whose middle pole co-varies with the dipoles in the South Indian and Atlantic Oceans and is used in this study to track subtropical Pacific variability. The South Indian and Atlantic Ocean dipoles and the subtropical Pacific variability are phase-locked in austral summer. On the inter-decadal time scales, the dipoles in the South Indian and Atlantic Oceans weaken in amplitude after 1979/1980. No such weakening is found in the subtropical South Pacific Ocean. Interestingly, despite the reduced amplitude, the correlation of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic dipoles with E1 Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are enhanced after 1979/1980. The same increase in correlation is found for subtropical South Pacific variability after 1979/1980. These inter-decadal modulations imply that the Southern Hemisphere participates in part of the climate shift in the late 1970s. The correlation between Southern Hemisphere SST and ENSO reduces after 2000.展开更多

Fe was the most abundant of the analyzed trace metals, with an average concentration of 28.824 ng.m3. V and Zn concentrations were also high, and their average concentrations were 5.541 ng.m^3 and 2.584 ng.m^-3, respectively. Although sea spray significantly influenced the marine aerosol particles measured (Na had the highest concentrations of the analyzed elements, with an average concentration of 2.65 μg.m^-3), multivariate analyses (enrichment factor and principal components analysis) indicated that most of the elements were not associated with oceanic sources. Over the Southern Ocean, Fe, Cd, As, AI and Cr in the aerosols mainly originated from crustal sources, while Cu, Pb, V and Zn originated from crustal sources and anthropogenic emissions. The enrichment factors (EFcrust) for most elements (Fe, Al, As, Cr, Cd, Cu and V) were much lower in the northern latitudes, indicating that when the sampling occurred closer to land the concentrations of these elements in aerosols were strongly affected by terrestrial crustal sources.展开更多

In both sites, the waters were divided into four layers: surface layer, subsurface layer, N2O maximum layer, and deep water. Simulations were made to find out the most important factors that regulate the N2O distribution patterns in different layers of both sites. The results showed that in the surface water, N2O was more understaturated in the ISSO than the BSB. This phenom- enon in the surface water of ISSO may result from ice melt water intrusion and northeastward transport of the Antarctic surface water. Results of the rough estimation of air-sea fluxes during the expedition were (-0.34±0.07)-(-0.64±0.13) μmol/(m2·d) and (-1.47±0.42)-(-1.77±0.51) μmol/(m-2·d) for the BSB and the ISSO, respectively. Strongly stratified surface layer and temperature minimum layer restricted exchange across the thermocline. The N2O maximum existed in higher concentration and deeper in the BSB than the ISSO, but their contribution to the upper layer by eddy diffusions was negligible. In deep waters, a concentration difference of 5 nmol/L N2O between these two sites was found, which suggested that N2O production occurred during thermohaline circulation. N2O may be a useful tracer to study important large-scale hydrographic processes.展开更多

文摘Nitrification,a central process in the marine nitrogen cycle, produces regenerated nitrate in the euphotic zone and emits N_(2)O,a potent greenhouse gas as a by-product.The regulatory mechanisms of nitrification in the Southern Ocean, which is a critical region for CO_(2)sequestration and radiative benefits, remain poorly understood. Here,we investigated the in situ and dark nitrification rates in the upper 500 m and conducted substrate kinetics experiments across the Indian Sector in the Cosmonaut and Cooperation seas in the late austral summer. Our findings indicate that light inhibition of nitrification decreases exponentially with depth, exhibiting a light threshold of 0.53%photosynthetically active radiation.A positive relationship between dark nitrification and apparent oxygen utilization suggests a dependence on substrate availability from primary production.Importantly,an increased NH_(4)^(+) supply can act as a buffer against photo-inhibitory damage.Globally, substrate affinity(α)increases with depth and transitions from light to dark, decreases with increasing ambient NH_(4)^(+)and exhibits a latitudinal distribution, reflecting substrate utilization strategies. We also reveal that upwelling in Circumpolar Deep Water(CDW)stimulates nitrification through the introduction of potentially higher iron and deep diverse nitrifying microorganisms with higherα.We conclude that although light is the primary limiting factor for nitrification in summer, coupling between substrate availability and CDW upwelling can overcome this limitation, thereby alleviating photoinhibition by up to 45%±5.3%.

文摘This work evaluates the performances of climate models in simulating the Southern Ocean(SO)sea surface temperature(SST)by a large ensemble from phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5 and CMIP6).By combining models from the same community sharing highly similar SO SST biases and eliminating the effect of global-mean biases on local SST biases, the results reveal that the ensemble-mean SO SST bias at 70°-30°S decreases from 0.38℃ in CMIP5 to 0.28℃ in CMIP6,together with increased intermodel consistency. The dominant mode of the intermodel variations in the zonal-mean SST biases is characterized as a meridional uniform warm bias pattern, explaining 79.1% of the intermodel variance and exhibiting positive principal values for most models. The ocean mixed layer heat budget further demonstrates that the SST biases at 70°-50°S primarily result from the excessive summertime heating effect from surface net heat flux. The biases in surface net heat flux south of 50°S are largely impacted by surface shortwave radiation from cloud and clear sky components at different latitudes.North of 50°S,the underestimated westerlies reduce the northward Ekman transport and hence northward cold advection in models, leading to warm SST biases year-round.In addition, the westerly biases are primarily traced back to the atmosphere-alone model simulations forced by the observed SST and sea ice. These results disclose the thermal origin at the high latitude and dynamical origin at the low latitude of the SO SST biases and underscore the significance of the deficiencies of atmospheric models in producing the SO SST biases.

文摘The mechanical influences involved in the interaction between the Antarctic sea ice and ocean surface current(OSC)on the subpolar Southern Ocean have been systematically investigated for the first time by conducting two simulations that include and exclude the OSC in the calculation of the ice-ocean stress(IOS), using an eddy-permitting coupled ocean-sea ice global model. These results emphasize the importance of OSCs in the air-sea-ice interactions on the global ocean circulations and the mass balance of Antarctic ice shelves, and this component may become more significant as the rapid change of Antarctic sea ice.

文摘This study assesses the capability of a coarse-resolution ocean model to replicate the response of the Southern Ocean Meridional Overturning Circulation(MOC) to intensified westerlies, focusing on the role of the eddy transfer coefficient(κ).κ is a parameter commonly used to represent the velocities induced by unresolved eddies. Our findings reveal that a stratification-dependent κ,incorporating spatiotemporal variability, leads to the most robust eddy-induced MOC response, capturing 82% of the reference eddy-resolving simulation.Decomposing the eddy-induced velocity into its vertical variation(VV) and spatial structure(SS) components unveils that the enhanced eddy compensation response primarily stems from an augmented SS term, while the introduced VV term weakens the response.Furthermore, the temporal variability of the stratification-dependent κ emerges as a key factor in enhancing the eddy compensation response to intensified westerlies. The experiment with stratification-dependent κ exhibits a more potent eddy compensation response compared to the constant κ,attributed to the structure of κ and the vertical variation of the density slope. These results underscore the critical role of accurately representing κ in capturing the response of the Southern Ocean MOC and emphasize the significance of the isopycnal slope in modulating the eddy compensation mechanism.

文摘Based on the Ocean Reanalysis System version 5(ORAS5)and the fifth-generation reanalysis datasets derived from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ERA5),we investigate the different impacts of the central Pacific(CP)El Niño and the eastern Pacific(EP)El Niño on the Southern Ocean(SO)mixed layer depth(MLD)during austral winter. The MLD response to the EP El Niño shows a dipole pattern in the South Pacific, namely the MLD dipole, which is the leading El Niño-induced MLD variability in the SO.The tropical Pacific warm sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA)signal associated with the EP El Niño excites a Rossby wave train propagating southeastward and then enhances the Amundsen Sea low(ASL).This results in an anomalous cyclone over the Amundsen Sea.As a result, the anomalous southerly wind to the west of this anomalous cyclone advects colder and drier air into the southeast of New Zealand, leading to surface cooling through less total surface heat flux, especially surface sensible heat(SH)flux and latent heat(LH)flux, and thus contributing to the mix layer(ML)deepening. The east of the anomalous cyclone brings warmer and wetter air to the southwest of Chile, but the total heat flux anomaly shows no significant change. The warm air promotes the sea ice melting and maintains fresh water, which strengthens stratification. This results in a shallower MLD.During the CP El Niño,the response of MLD shows a separate negative MLD anomaly center in the central South Pacific. The Rossby wave train triggered by the warm SSTA in the central Pacific Ocean spreads to the Amundsen Sea,which weakens the ASL.Therefore, the anomalous anticyclone dominates the Amundsen Sea.Consequently, the anomalous northerly wind to the west of anomalous anticyclone advects warmer and wetter air into the central and southern Pacific, causing surface warming through increased SH,LH,and longwave radiation flux, and thus contributing to the ML shoaling. However,to the east of the anomalous anticyclone, there is no statistically significant impact on the MLD.

文摘The data were collected during Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Expeditions in the western Arctic Ocean and themarginal sea ice zone (MSIZ) of the Southern Ocean, respectively in the boreal summer from July to September of1999 and in the austral summer from December of 1999 to January of 2000. The averaged CO2 fluxes of air to sea in the western Arctic Ocean or in the MSIZ of theSouthern Ocean doubled that in the world oceans.

文摘Dissolved and particulate thorium-234, particulate organic carbon in the upper 150 m of water columns from five stations in the Prydz Bay, the Southern Ocean were determined during the 22nd Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (from November 2005 to March 2006 ). The export fluxes of particulate organic carbon at different water columns were derived by two methods with irreversible scavenging model, and the averaged values were 104. 7 mmol/ ( m2 · d ) ( E method) and 120. 6 mmol/( m2·d ) ( B method ), respectively, indicating that a relatively high new production would exist in summer in the Prydz Bay where it will play a potential significant role in sequestering the absorption CO2 to deeper ocean.
文摘The paper deals with the studies on the cell abundance, the composition of dominant species, size fractionated biomass and productivity of phytoplankton, new production, the environmentally restricted mechanism in the Prydz Bay and the adjacent Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer 1998/1999. The average new production and f-ratio were 230.6 mg/ (m(2.)d) and 0.43, respectively.

文摘Mesoscale eddies play a key role in the ocean dynamics of the Southern Ocean, and eddy response to the climate changes has also been widely noted. In general, these results furtherly confirm that anomalous westerly wind forcing associated with the positive Southern Annular Mode(SAM) index enhances the Southern Ocean eddy activity by strengthening the eddy properties.

文摘Oceanographic surveying has been one of the key missions of the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition since 1984. Prospects for future research are presented at the end of this paper.
文摘A strain of psychrophilic bacterium, 2-5-10-1, which produces low-temperature lipase, is isolated from the deep sea of Prydz Bay in Southern Ocean. In contrast, the lipase activity is inhibited drastically by Cu2+ and Zn2+.

文摘Between 1984 and 2016, China executed 33 Antarctic cruises with the icebreaker R/V Xuelong, which have provided opportunities for Chinese scientists to investigate the status and changes of the Southern Ocean. Finally, the prospects for future Chinese Antarctic chemical oceanographic research are outlined.

文摘A new climatology of cyclones in the Southern Ocean is generated by applying an automated cyclone detection and tracking algorithm (developed by Hodges at the Reading University) for an improved and relatively high- resolution European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts atmospheric reanalysis during 1979-2013. Additionally, the relationship between cyclone activities in the Southern Ocean and the Southern Annular Mode is discussed.

文摘Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis reveals a co-variability of Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Southern Hemisphere (0°-60°S). The correlation between Southern Hemisphere SST and ENSO reduces after 2000.

文摘Atmospheric trace metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Fe, V, and Cr), As, A1 and Na in marine aerosols were studied over the Southern Ocean during the 28th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition. The enrichment factors (EFcrust) for most elements (Fe, Al, As, Cr, Cd, Cu and V) were much lower in the northern latitudes, indicating that when the sampling occurred closer to land the concentrations of these elements in aerosols were strongly affected by terrestrial crustal sources.

文摘Time-series of chlorophyll-a(CHL),a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, and various satellite-derived climate indicators are compared in a region of the Subantarctic Southern Ocean(40°-60°S,110°-140°E)for years 2012-2014.CHL reached a minimum in winter(June)and a maximum in late summer(early February).Zonal mean CHL decreased towards the south.Mean sea surface temperature(SST)ranged between 8℃and 15℃and peaked in late February.CHL and SST were positively correlated from March to June, negatively correlated from July to September.CHL and wind speed(WIND)were negatively correlated with peak WIND occurred in winter.Wind direction(WIRD)was mostly in the southwest to westerly direction. The Antarctic Oscillation index(AAO)and CHL were negatively correlated(R=−0.58),indicating that as synoptic wind systems move southwards,CHL increases, and conversely when wind systems move northwards,CHL decreases.A genetic algorithm is used to calibrate the biogeochemical DMS model’s key parameters.Under 4×CO2(after year 2100)Regional mean SST increases 12%-17%,WIND increases 1.2ms−1,Cloud Cover increases 4.8%and mixed layer depth(MLD)decreases 48m.The annual CHL increases 6.3%.The annual mean DMS flux increase 25.2%,increases 37%from day 1 to day 280 and decrease 3%from day 288 to day 360.The general increase of DMS flux under 4×CO2 conditions indicates the Subantarctic regional climate would be affected by changes in the DMS flux, with the potential for a cooling effect in the austral summer and autumn.

文摘Nitrous oxide (N2O) distribution patterns in the Bering Sea basin (BSB) and Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (ISSO) were described and compared. N2O may be a useful tracer to study important large-scale hydrographic processes.

文摘In-situ observation is restricted by the strong wind and waves in the Southern Ocean.A Westerlies EnvironmentalMonitoring Buoy(WEMB)was firstly deployed in the Southern Ocean during China’s 35th Antarctic Expedition, facilitating further understanding of the oceanic environmental characteristics of this region. With the develop-ment of technology and the improvement of data processing methods, the accuracy of satellite altimeter productsis constantly improved, thus making it possible to inspect and evaluate the in-situ observation data.Based on theL3 products of multiple satellite altimeters, this paper analyzes and corrects the significant wave height(SWH)data of WEMB by means of data matching, error statistics, and linear least-squares fitting.Through this study, the authors obtained the following results. The effect of gravitational acceleration changes with latitude on SWHaccuracy is fairly small.Due to the low response of WEMB to high-frequency waves, there is a systematic devia-tion.A feasible correction method is therefore proposed to improve the SWH accuracy of WEMB.The temporalvariation of the corrected SWH is highly consistent with that of the 10 m wind during the observation period, and its average value reaches 3.8 m.

文摘Fifty-seven bacteria were isolated from Southern Ocean (Indian sector) water samples which were collected from different latitude and longitude of the ocean. All the isolates were able to grow at 4℃, 20℃, 37℃ and tolerable NaCI concentration up to 13.5% (w/v). 29 out of 57 isolates were identified using 16S rDNA amplification and the sequences were submitted to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). All the isolates were classified by using Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) and found that isolates belongs to Proteobacteria and Bacteriodes. The average G+C content was 56.4%. The isolates were screened for the presence of extracellular enzymes, viz. amylase, catalase, urease, esterase, lipase and protease. The disc diffusion method is used to screen antibiotic production by the isolates against four pathogenic bacteria, viz. Salmonella typhimurium (NCIM 2501), Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2122), Bacillus subtilis (NCIM 2193), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM 2036). Nine out of 29 were found to be antibiotic producer.
