Urban Street Design Based on Spatial Experience

As the living place of urban citizens,urban street space covers the activities of people of all ages and is an important space for citizens to carry out public activities and interpersonal communication.The slogan of“people-orientation”is shouted in the construction process of every city street,but the street space design based on people’s personal experience and people’s psychological feeling is the real peopleoriented design.The design techniques of street space are explored from the perspective of people’s space experience.Starting from the elements of urban street space,according to the attributes of street space and people’s experience path in the space,the paper fi nds out the factors affecting the spatial experience of urban streets,and further explores the strategy of building urban street space.From the perspective of space experience,the design of urban street space is explored,in order to provide reference for the future design of urban streets that meet people’s experience.

Identity and Spatial Experience of Community Youth in Relation to Career Guidance

In order to investigate the self identity and vocational identity among community youth in Shanghai and their associated spatial experience, 4 focus groups, made up of 14 individuals were interviewed. We assigned numbers to indicate each interviewee as well as the general theme of each transcription of the interview. Results are as follows: community youth are in a transitional period in their lives, especially in regards to self concept, family, and how they experience their role in society;there is a notable distance between reality and the ideal career goals;the family space and community space have distinct characteristics for community youth, and there are specific interactive patterns that exist between the two types of spaces. Based on these results, we have introduced several insights into career guidance for this population.

The virtual-real measurement of Chinese garden impression:A quantitative analysis of cognitive experience of Jiangnan gardens with virtual reality experiments

Traditional Jiangnan garden architecture in China offers distinct spatial impressions that hold significance in contemporary architectural expression.Yet,the understanding and analysis of these spaces have historically relied on subjective,sensory experiences,often lacking precise,quantitative research.Consequently,establishing clear logical connections between visual cognition and emotional perception within these spatial experiences has been a challenge.This study introduces virtual reality spatial simulation and quantification techniques,summarizing key Jiangnan garden spatial characteristics and prototypes.It includes a series of virtual reality experiments focusing on cognitive experiences within Jiangnan garden spaces.A comprehensive analysis of isovisit quantitative data,questionnaires,and behavioral information explores the logical relationships between emotional perceptions(calmness,surprise,interest,confusion)and visual cognition qualities(openness,complexity,theatricality)in garden space impressions.This research aims to reveal deeper connections between garden space qualities,visual cognition,and emotional experiences,offering valuable insights for the application of historical traditional spatial features in contemporary architecture.It bridges the gap between sensory experiences and rational analysis,enhancing our understanding of the intricate spatial narratives within Jiangnan gardens.

Influence of architectural heritage on the identity and present-day value of American-designed universities’campuses in Asia

In this study,through case studies of campus architectural heritage,the preservation of architectural heritage on campuses is explored.In addition,the effects of architectural heritage preservation on the identity of campuses are investigated,and the corresponding effects on present-day value and spatial experience are analysed.The case studies involve early campuses planned in East Asia by Henry Murphy,and they feature American designs and building styles.In this study,first,the characteristics of the campuses planned by Henry Murphy are analysed.Next,the characteristics of the preserved architectural heritage at Chosen Christian College are analysed.Finally,with a focus on the preservation of architectural heritage at Shanghai College,the value of architectural heritage and the spatial experience associated with campus development are analysed.Chosen Christian College focused on maintaining the authenticity of buildings,and Shanghai College attempted to consolidate the identity of the campus through maximizing the spatial experience of the architectural heritage group and preserving architectural heritage.Thus,Shanghai College was more influenced by Henry Murphy’s master plan in the development and growth of the campus,and tried to carry on the design concept of the architect and the image of the campus.Conversely,Chosen Christian College was able to retain its original design over nearly a century with the use of all-stone buildings,as Henry Murphy proposed,but no significant trace of the early general plan remains.
