Herein,we employ the threshold energy neutron analysis(TENA)technique to introduce the world's first active interrogation system to detect special nuclear materials(SNMs),including U-235 and Pu-239.The system util...Herein,we employ the threshold energy neutron analysis(TENA)technique to introduce the world's first active interrogation system to detect special nuclear materials(SNMs),including U-235 and Pu-239.The system utilizes a DD neutron generator based on inertial electrostatic confinement(IEC)to interrogate suspicious objects.To detect secondary neutrons produced during fission reactions induced in SNMs,a tensioned metastable fluid detector(TMFD)is employed.The current status of the system's development is reported in this paper,accompanied by the results from experiments conducted to detect 10 g of highly enriched uranium(HEU).Notably,the experimental findings demonstrate a distinct difference in the count rates of measurements with and without HEU.This difference in count rates surpasses two times the standard deviation,indicating a confidence level of more than 96% for identifying the presence of HEU.The paper presents and extensively discusses the proof-of-principle experimental results,along with the system's planned trajectory.展开更多

In order to present basic guidance for system calibration of split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) with the special shape striker,wave characteristics and dynamic responses of SHPB under striker impact were analyzed.Stre...In order to present basic guidance for system calibration of split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) with the special shape striker,wave characteristics and dynamic responses of SHPB under striker impact were analyzed.Stress generated by the special shape striker tends to have a half-sine waveform and has little wave dispersion during its propagation.Impact velocities of the special shape striker and peak values of generated stress still have linear relation but with a different coefficient from that of cylindrical strikers.From stress histories on the surfaces of the input bar impacted by the special shape striker off-axially and obliquely,it is found that the misalignment impacts usually trigger wave distortion and amplitude decrease,which can be used to identify the poor system adjustment.Finally,the system calibration of SHPB with the special shape striker can be classified into four steps:system adjustment,wave distortion identification,measurement calibration and transmission calibration,where the measurement calibration factor and transmission calibration factor are elaborated and redefined.展开更多

The SEAS has been practiced for three years and results show that the SEAS more efficiently utilizes local time and space resources and gains more econo- mic, ecological and social benefits. Queue detection systems have been used in traffic management in work zones and have also been recommended for traffic control for special events like sports and conventions. However, they have not been tested in the f...Queue detection systems have been used in traffic management in work zones and have also been recommended for traffic control for special events like sports and conventions. However, they have not been tested in the field. This paper presents the results of tests for a queue detection system at two special events in Las Vegas, Nevada. The system consisted of two vision detectors, radio frequency communications and one changeable message sign. Two aspects of the system were evaluated: the effectiveness of the system in reducing speeds and the cost and effectiveness of its deployment. In the tests, traffic data such as queue length and vehicle operating speeds were collected and analyzed to see whether motorists respond congestion related message on the changeable message sign when they did not perceive the congestion. By this approach, the motorists’ true responses to the system were identified. The results indicated that motorists did make positive responses to the messages provided by the system. However, it was found that the system may not be cost-effective because significant costs would be incurred in purchasing, installation and maintenance of the system. Recommendations were provided to utilize existing message signs and detectors to provide the same information to motorists as a queue detection system does.展开更多
