It has a more aggressive behavior as compared to classical squomous cell carcinoma warranting surgical inter...Spindle cell carcinoma of head and neck, a subtype of squamous cell carcinoma is a unique and rare neoplasm. It has a more aggressive behavior as compared to classical squomous cell carcinoma warranting surgical interventions with wider surgical margins. Immunohistochemistry along with routine histopathology is essential in establishing the diagnosis of spindle cell carcinoma. We at Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, a regional institute for treatment and research, hereby report 40 cases of such lesion with clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study. Out of total 40 cases included in the study group most of the cases were in the age group of 40 to 60 years. Commonest site of presentation was nasopharynx and buccal mucosa. 14 cases of the oral cavity (buccal mucosa, alveolus, oral tongue and hard palate) were treated with surgery. All the cases with disease of the larynx and hypopharynx were treated with radiotherapy and cases involving the nasopharynx received radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In the surgery group recurrence rate was found to be 71.4% and metastasis rate was 21.4%. Biopsy specimens were subjected to histopathological examination followed by immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemical analysis show concurrent presence of malignant epithelial and sarcomatoid spindle cell components by co-expression of cytokeratin (CK) and vimentin to various degrees.展开更多

Methods: The expression of elF-4E and p53 in 32 cases of SCC was detected by immunohistochemical SABC method. Results: The positive rate of elF-4E and p53 expression was 93.8% and 56.3% in SCC, and the levels of eIF-4E and p53 were significantly higher in SCC than those in the normal skin tissue (P 〈 0.05). Conclusion: Both elF-4E and p53 were useful markers in SCC, but the specialty and sensitivity of the eiF- 4E protein was high in SCC.展开更多

The aim of our study is to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of 17 cases of...Objective: Lung carcinoma with spindle and (or) giant cell (LCSG) is a rare epithelial malignant tumor. The aim of our study is to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of 17 cases of LCSGs. Methods: Among 421 patients underwent resection of lung carcinomas, 17 cases of LCSG were studied for clinical, gross and histological parameters. Follow-up information was obtained and analyzed to clarify prognostically significant parameters. Results: The LCSG patients consisted of 15 males and 2 females, with the age ranging from 45 to 78 years (median, 58 years); 5 cases of stage Ⅰ, 3 of stage Ⅱ, 9 of stage Ⅲ by pathological TNM staging; 2 cases of exclusively spindle cell carcinoma, 5 cases of lung carcinoma with spindle cell, 10 cases of lung carcinoma with giant-cell carcinoma. Cough, chest distress, or chest pain were the most common presenting symptoms, occurring in 15 patients (88.2%). Of 5 patients in stage Ⅰ, 4 were alive and free of relapse for more than 5 years. The difference in survival was statistically significant between LCSG and squamous cell carcinoma patients (median survival, 36 vs. 61 months; P = 0.027). Lymph node metastasis and carcinoma with giant cell were the hazardous factors impacting postoperative prognosis of LCSG patients. Conclusion: LCSG patients in early stage may have an optimistic outcome. Lung carcinomas with giant cell displayed multiple cell components in histopathology, and poor outcome due to more lymph node involved.展开更多

It is extremely rare in the gastric remnant. Here, we report a case and review the literature in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of SCC of the gastric remnant.Methods We report a case of SCC of the gastric remnant in a 71-year-old male Chinese patient who presented with epigastric pain, acid regurgitation, and belching and who underwent Billroth II gastrectomy more than 38 years ago.Results Physical examination showed no obvious abnormalities. Laboratory data were within normal limits, except for anemia. Pathology of the mass showed a protruded tumor measuring 5.0 × 5.0 × 2.5 cm at the anastomotic edge of the gastric remnant that infiltrated through the full wall of the stomach; this was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin [CK(-)], leukocyte common antigen(LCA)(+), synaptophysin(+), CD56(+), and Ki-67(+ > 50%).Conclusion SCC of the gastric remnant is extremely rare, although the pathology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of SCC are similar to those of gastric SCC. Although the standard treatment of SCC of the gastric remnant remains unclear, effective surgical resection and subsequent multiagent chemotherapy should be performed for long-term survival. Our case shows the efficacy of tegafurgimeracil-oteracil-potassium capsule chemotherapy. Examination of a large series is required to determine the optimal treatment strategy for SCC of the gastric remnant.展开更多

Chromosomal aberrations are detected in ~50% of cases of de novo MDS cases and the most common chromosomal abnormalities of this entity include complete or partial monosomy of chromosomes 5 and 7, partial deletion of 20q and 12p, trisomy 8, and 11q23 aberrations. A few primary and/or secondary MDS cases combined with other cancer have been reported. Case Presentation: We report here an adult MDS associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). G-banding and array-proven multicolor banding (aMCB) revealed an unbalanced translocation der(7)t(1;7)(q21;q21), which led to 1q partial trisomy and 7q partial monosomy. Immunophenotype of this case was consistent with refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB-2) according to World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Conclusions: As far as we know, this is the first adult MDS case associated with SCC and an unbalanced translocation t(1;7). Our patient received first cycle of azacitidine treatment and he showed bilateral pleural effusion as a secondary event. This toxicity is not limited to the first cycle as in previous MDS cases;our case is the first one to shown this toxicity as a secondary event of azacitidine treatment. As less than 10 cytogenetcially comparable cases without SCC were reported before in male MDS, we carefully conclude that this cytogenetic aberration may be a hint on a new gender associated MDS subgroup.展开更多

The effects of growth factors and calcium concentrations present in different culture media on induction of terminal differentiation were investigated for four different epidermoid carcinoma cell lines, Hela, KB, A431...The effects of growth factors and calcium concentrations present in different culture media on induction of terminal differentiation were investigated for four different epidermoid carcinoma cell lines, Hela, KB, A431, and SCC-25, and their responses determined relative to those elicited by normal human keratinocytes subjected to these culture conditions. Differentiation status was determined cyto-chemically by a validated keratin protein staining method, and by autoradiographic analyses. Growth and differentiation promoting factors that influenced the direction of integrated control of growth and differentiation in normal human keratinocytes were found to be effective for some cell lines but not others. The factors examined were 1) high density arrest in serum-free and serum-containing media, 2) media shifts from high density culture in serum-containing media to low density growth factor-depleted or supplemented serum-free medium, and 3) the concentration of calcium in the media. The extent and degree of differentiation achieved varied among different cell lines depend on the presence or absence of serum, EGF and insulin protein growth factors. Certain growth media appear to sponsor keratin protein, cyto-chemically-detected differentiation, and evidence of quantal mitotic division in low density HeLa cell and SCC25 cell cultures. Epidermoid carcinoma cell lines retain limited capacity to commit to early stages of cell differentiation.展开更多
