The influence of rare earth (RE) elements on the solidification process and eutectic transformation and mechanical properties of the high-V type cast, high-speed steel roll was studied. Test materials with different RE additions were prepared on a horizontal centrifugal casting machine. The solidification process, eutectic structure transformation, carbide morphology, and the elements present, were all investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The energy produced by crack initiation and crack extension was analyzed using a digital impact test machine. It was found that rare earth elements increased the tensile strength of the steel by inducing crystallization of earlier eutectic γ-Fe during the solidification process, which in turn increased the solidification temperature and thinned the dendritic grains. Rare earth elements with large atomic radius changed the lattice parameters of the MC carbide by forming rare earth carbides. This had the effect of dispersing longpole M C carbides to provide carbide grains, thereby, reducing the formation of the gross carbide and making more V available, to increase the secondary hardening process and improve the hardness level. The presence of rare earth elements in the steel raised the impact toughness by changing the mechanism of MC carbide formation, thereby increasing the crack initiation energy. 展开更多

Novel water-based nanolubricants using TiO2 nanoparticles(NPs)were synthesised by adding sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)and glycerol, which exhibited excellent dispersion stability and wettability. The tribological performance of the synthesised nanolubricants was investigated using an Rtec ball-on-disk tribometer, and their application in hot steel rolling was evaluated on a 2-high Hille 100 experimental rolling mill,in comparison to those without SDBS.The water-based nanolubricant containing 4 wt%TiO2 and 0.4 wt%SDBS demonstrated superior tribological performance by decreasing coefficient of friction and ball wear up to 70.5%and 84.3%,respectively,compared to those of pure water. In addition to the lubrication effect, the suspensions also had significant effect on polishing of the work roll surface. The resultant surface improvement thus enabled the decrease in rolling force up to 8.3%under a workpiece reduction of 30%at a rolling temperature of 850◦C.The lubrication mechanisms were primarily ascribed to the formation of lubricating film and ball-bearing effect of the TiO2 NPs. 展开更多

The critical points and time-temperature-transformation(TTT)curves of the isothermal transformation diagrams for a high-speed steel casting on a horizontal centrifugal casting machine had been determined experimentally in the study. The effects of quenching temperature on the microstructures and properties of centrifugal casting high speed steel(HSS)roll has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), light optical microscopy(LOM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)as well as using tensile, impact, and hardness tests. The results show that the HSS roll has excellent hardenability and its matrix structure can be transformed into the martensite after being quenched in the sodium silicate solution. The retained austenite in the quenching structure increases and the hardness decreases when the quenching temperature exceeds 1,040℃.The tensile strength and impact toughness of HSS roll increase once the quenching temperature is raised from 980℃to 1,040℃. However, the tensile strength and impact toughness have no significant change when the quenching temperature exceeds 1,040℃.The HSS roll quenched at 1,040℃exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. 展开更多

High speed steel (HSS) rolls can replace traditional rolls such as alloyed cast iron rolls and powder metallurgical (PM) hard alloy rolls. The main reasons for the replacement are that the wear resistance of low-cost alloyed cast iron rolls is poor and the cost of high-quality PM hard alloy rolls is very high. By means of centrifugal casting, HSS rolls having excellent wear resistance have been manufactured. The hardness of the HSS roll is 6.5~67 HRC, the range of variation is smaller than 2 HRC and its impact toughness is 15 J/cm2. The wear rate of HSS rolls used in the pre-finishing stands of high-speed hot wire-rod rolling mill reaches 2.5×10-4mm per ton steel. Furthermore, the manufacturing cost of HSS rolls is significantly lower than that of PM hard alloy rolls; it is only 30 percent of that of PM hard alloy rolls. 展开更多

The guide-pieces, which were slide contacting with the rolled-piece, had a high temperature and high speed. The wear was very serious. The results from failure analysis showed that there were three failure forms in the guide-pieces: the first was the wear during heat friction, the second was the heat fatigue under the cycle of deep heating and deep cooling, and the third was the impact rupture. Among them, the wear was the main reason. To the wear of guide-pieces, there were four mechanisms, namely abrasive wear, adhesive wear, fatigue wear and corrosion wear. The failure analysis to the guide-piece laid the foundation for its remanufacturing. 展开更多

Due to its high hardness, good red hardness and excellent wear resistance at high temperature, high speed steel(HSS)is fit for the roll manufacture. In order to overcome the segregation of centrifugal casting of HSS roll,die-cast processes were developed and its effects on the properties of the HSS roll were investigated. It was found that pressure, pressing time and speed are three important factors affecting shrinkage cavity. For pouring temperature of 1 400-1 450 ℃,pressure of 150-160 MPa,pressing time of 120-150 sand pressing speed of 14-16mm/s,a compact HSS roll was obtained, which has no segregation and small working allowance. In the high speed wire rod rolling mill, service life of the HSS roll is 5to 8times longer than that of high nickel chromium infinite chilled cast iron roll. 展开更多

The effects of quenching temperature, cooling pattern, temper temperature andtemper times on the structure and properti-es of high speed steel (HSS) rolls have beeninvestigated. The results show that, when the quenching temperature is lower than 1050℃ thehardness of HSS increases with the quenching temperature increasing in oil cooling, but when thequenching temperature exceeds 1100℃ the hardness decreases. In the conditions of salt bath coolingand air cooling, the effect of quenching temperature on the hardness is similar to the above law,but the quenching temperature obtaining the highest hardness is higher than that in oil cooling. When the temper temperature below 350℃ the hardness of HSS has a little change, when above 475℃the hardness will increase with the temper temperature increasing, and the highest hardness isobtained at 525℃. When the temper temperature continues to increase, the hardness decreases. Twicetemper has little effect on the hardness, but three times temper decreases the hardness. HSS in aircooling has lower hardenability, oil cooling can easily produce crackle, and HSS quenching in saltbath has high harde-nability and excellent wear resistance. 展开更多

The present study aims at developing the high speed steel (HSS) as rollmaterials to replace the traditional roll materials such as the alloy cast iron and powdermetallurgical (PM) hard alloy. The HSS roll billet was formed by centrifugal casting, and the billetwas rough machined alter soften annealing heat treatment, then it was quenched and tempered to getsuitable hardness and toughness. After that the HSS roll was finish machined to the final dimensionof phi 285 mm in the outer diameter, phi 160 mm in the inner diameter and 120 mm in width and itssurface hardness was tested. Finally the HSS roll was used in high speed wire rod mill. The testresults show that a high and homogeneous hardness can obtain on the work surface of HSS rolls, thesurface hardness is 63-65HRC and its variation is smaller than 2HRC. The impact toughness of thiskind of HSS is about 16 J/cm^2. The results of on-line service investigation in high speed wire rodmill indicate that the HSS rolls have excellent wear resistance, the steel rolling quantity per mmof HSS rolls is 3120 t, the service life-span of HSS rolls is 4 times longer than that of highchromium cast iron rolls and it is close to that of the PM hard alloy rolls. The manufacturingburden of HSS rolls is obviously lower than that of the PM hard alloy rolls, it is only 25 percentof that of the PM hard alloy rolls. 展开更多

In terms of energy use and carbon footprint,it is the primary processes of ironmaking and steelmaking that command most attention in our industry. The rolling mills, although energy-intensive by comparison with most industrial finishing operations, are often overlooked when a steel company considers its environmental responsibilities and its energy-saving opportunities. The high gearing of energy consumption of the primary processes over the finishing processes has an important consequence, however. The key to green rolling is as much about yield(and avoiding the remelting of scrap) as it is about direct energy use. This paper uses a project case study, the design and commissioning of the Endless Strip Processing(ESP) plant of Arvedi in Italy to illustrate how modern rolling mills are contributing to a greener steel industry. The relevant technical features include the energy savings implicit in near-net shape casting and in direct rolling, without intermediate reheating, advances in drive and power conversion technologies and the aforementioned concept of energy saving through yield maximisation. Some notable co-operative efforts towards greener rolling are also explained, including university collaborations and in particular the WellMet2050 project at the University of Cambridge. In conclusion, the green credentials of steel usage in general industry are considered and key messages for the engineering community are sought. 展开更多

The present study aims at developing high speed steel (HSS) as roll materialsto replace traditional roll materials such as the alloy cast iron and powder metallurgical (PM)hard alloy, because low-cost alloy cast iron rolls have poor wear resistance and the cost ofhigh-quality PM hard alloy rolls is too high to be accepted by some users. By means of a centrifugalcasting method, HSS rolls with excellent wear resistance have been developed. Its hardness is 65-67 HRC, and its variation is smaller than 2HRC; its impact toughness excels 15J/cm^2. Laser rapid heating was used for thermal fatigue experiments. Thermal cracks and microstructure were observed using metalloscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that thermal cracks initiated from the interface between the matrix and eutectic carbides (including M6C and M7C3 type carbides),and propagated along the interface between the two phases. MC type carbides enriched with vanadium could prevent the propagation of thermal cracks. The presence of rare earth elements decreased the quantity of big eutectic carbides, and proportionally increased spherical and rod-shaped MC type carbide content. HSS0 (0.00% RE) had approximately three times the thermal cracking density of HSS3 (0.12 wt.% RE). Rare earth elements were shown to significantly improve the microstructure and thermal cracking resistance of HSS rolls. 展开更多

Influence of hot deformation and subsequent austempering on the mechanical properties of hot rolled multiphase steel was investigated. Thermo-mechanical control processing (TMCP) was conducted by using a laboratory hot rolling mill, where three different kinds of finishing rolling reduction, and austemperings with various isothermal holding duration were applied. The results have shown that a multiphase microstructure consisting of polygonal ferrite, granular bainite and larger amount of stabilized retained austenite can be obtained by controlled rolling processes. Mechanical properties increase with increasing the amount of deformation because of the stabilization of retained austenite. Ultimate tensile strength (σb), total elongation (σ) and the product of ultimate tensile strength and total elongation (σb-σ) reach the maximum values (791 MPa, 36% and 28476 MPa%, respectively) at optimal processes. 展开更多

Analogizing with the heat conduction process, the entransy dissipation extremum principle for thermal insulation process can be described as: for a fixed boundary heat flux (heat loss) with certain constraints, the thermal insulation process is optimized when the entransy dissipation is maximized (maximum average temperature difference), while for a fixed boundary temperature, the thermal insulation process is optimized when the entransy dissipation is minimized (minimum average heat loss rate). Based on the constructal theory, the constructal optimizations of a single plane and cylindrical insulation layers as well as multi-layer insulation layers of the steel rolling reheating furnace walls are carried out for the fixed boundary temperatures and by taking the minimization of entransy dissipation rate as optimization objective. The optimal constructs of these three kinds of insulation structures with distributed thicknesses are obtained. The results show that compared with the insulation layers with uniform thicknesses and the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum heat loss rate, the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum entransy dissipation rate are obviously different from those of the former two insulation layers; the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum entransy dissipation rate can effectively reduce the average heat loss rates of the insulation layers, and can help to improve their global thermal insulation performances. The entransy dissipation extremum principle is applied to the constructal optimizations of insulation systems, which will help to extend the application range of the entransy dissipation extremum principle. 展开更多

A new technical prototype for producing Fe-6.5wt% Si electrical steel sheets by directional solidification, heat treatment before rolling, warm rolling, and cold rolling was proposed in the present study. The formability of Fe-6.5wt% Si electrical steel before rolling and the reasonable process parameters of this technical prototype were obtained. Experimental results reveal that the formability of Fe-6.5wt% Si electrical steel is improved significantly under the combination of directional solidification and heat treatment before rolling. Fe-6.5wt% Si electrical steel sheets with the thickness of 0.15 ram, bright surface, few edge cracks, and high rolling yield can be successfully fabricated using this technology without any intermediate annealing during the whole rolling. The combination of directional solidification, heat treatment before rolling, warm rolling, and cold rolling can work as a new process for highly efficient and compact fabrication of Fe-6.5wt% Si electrical steel sheets. 展开更多

A cold rolled dual phase (DP) steel with the C-Si-Mn alloy system was trial-produced in the laboratory, utilizing a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator. The effects of continuous annealing parameters on the mechanical properties and microstructures of the DP steel were investigated by mechanical testing and microstructure observation. The results show that soaking between 760 and 820℃ for more than 80 s, rapid cooling at the rate of more than 30℃/s from the quenching temperature between 620 and 680℃, and overaging lower than 300℃ are beneficial for the mechanical properties of DP steels. An appropriate proportion of the two phases is one of the key factors for the favorable properties of DP steels. If the volume fraction of martensite and, thereby, free dislocations are deficient, the tensile strength and n value of DP steels will decrease, whereas, the yield strength will increase. But if the volume fraction of martensite is excessive to make it become a dominant phase, the yield and tensile strength will increase, whereas, the elongation will decrease obviously. When rapid cooling rate is not fast enough, pearlite or cementite will appear, which will degrade the mechanical properties. Even though martensite is sufficient, if it is decomposed in high temperature tempering, the properties will he unsatisfied. 展开更多

In this report, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and textures of warm rolled interstitial-free steel annealed at four different temperatures(730,760,790,and 820°C)were studied. The overall structural features of specimens were investigated by optical microscopy, and the textures were measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD).Nano-sized precipitates were then observed by a transmission electron microscope(TEM)on carbon extraction replicas.According to the results, with increased annealing temperatures, the ferrite grains grew;in addition, the sizes of Ti_4C_2S_2 and Ti C precipitates also increased.Additionally, the sizes of Ti N and Ti S precipitates slightly changed. When the annealing temperature increased from 730 to 820°C,the yield strength(YS)and the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)showed a decreasing trend.Meanwhile, elongation and the strain harden exponent(n value)increased to 49.6%and 0.34,respectively.By comparing textures annealed at different temperatures, the intensity of{111}texture annealed at 820°C was the largest, while the difference between the intensity of{111}<110>and{111}<112>was the smallest when the annealing temperature was 820°C.Therefore,the plastic strain ratio(r value)annealed at 820°C was the highest. 展开更多

Effect of austempering on the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) of hot rolled multiphase steel was investigated. Polygonal ferrite, granular bainite, and a large amount of stabilized retained austenite could be obtained in the hot rolled multiphase steel. Strain induced martensite transformation (SIMT) of retained austenite and TRIP effectively occur under straining owing to austempering after hot rolling, and mechanical properties of the present steel remain at a relatively high constant value for austempering at 400℃. The mechanical properties of the steel exhibited a good combination of tensile strength (791MPa) and total elongation (36%) because the stability of retained austenite is optimal when the steel is held for 20min. 展开更多
