If neglected, it can reach a considerable volume. The marginal gingiva is very involved in the tumor either in isolation or with periodontal and alveolar bone. The epulis sits classically on the vestibular gum, rarely on the palatal side. We report a case of palatal giant epulis which posed a diagnostic problem. Case report: This was a 50-year-old patient with a large tumor occupying the entire oral cavity and pushing all nearby organs. This lesion had been evolving for ten years, with a tendency to gradually increase of its volume. The orthopantomogram revealed the destruction of the underlying alveolar bone without signs of tumor invasion. Surgical excision was performed, removing all the tumor in the vicinity of the nasopalatine vascular pedicle. The pathological examination concludes with an inflammatory epulis. Conclusion: The epulis is a benign tumor of the gum, circumscribed, localized preferentially at the neck of one or two contiguous teeth. It occurs more in women, with a predilection for the vestibular side, rarely the palatal side. In the absence of appropriate treatment it can lead to a large tumor, posing a diagnostic problem and causing functional or aesthetic discomfort. Complete surgical excision with histological examination remains the solution. Healing without sequelae is the rule. 展开更多

Research in stomatology(dental medicine)continues to expand globally and is oriented towards solving clinical issues, focusing on clarifying the clinical relevance and potential mechanisms of oral–systemic connections via clinical epidemiology, oral microecological characterization, and the establishment of animal models.Interdisciplinary integration of materials science and tissue engineering with stomatology is expected to lead to the creation of innovative materials and technologies to better resolve the most prevalent and challenging clinical issues such as peri-implantitis,soft and hard tissue defects, and dentin hypersensitivity. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence(AI),5th generation mobile communication technology(5G),and big data applications,“intelligent stomatology”is emerging to build models for better clinical diagnosis and management, accelerate the reform of education, and support the growth and advancement of scientific research. Here,we summarized the current research status, and listed the future prospects and limitations of these three aspects, aiming to provide a basis for more accurate etiological exploration, novel treatment methods, and abundant big data analysis in stomatology to promote the translation of research achievements into practical applications for both clinicians and the public. 展开更多

The multi-piece post-crown technique is more effective in restoring residual root than other restoration techniques.Various types of adhesives have different material properties that affect restoration. Therefore, the choice of adhesive is particularly important for patients. However, the effect of different kinds of adhesives was not too precise by experimental methods when concerning about individual differences of teeth. One tooth root can only be restored with one type of adhesive in experiment. After the mechanical test, this tooth root cannot be restored with other adhesives. With the help of medical imaging technology, reverse engineering and finite element analysis,a molar model can be reconstructed precisely and restored using different types of adhesives. The same occlusal and chewing loads were exerted on the same restored residual root models with different types of adhesives separately. Results of von Mises stress analysis showed that the adhesives with low Young’s modulus can protect the root canal effectively. However,a root canal concentration is apparently produced around the root canal orifice when chewing.Adhesives with large Young’s modulus can buffer the stress concentration of the root canal orifice. However, the root canal tissue may be destroyed because the adhesive is too hard to buffer the load. 展开更多

As with other scientific disciplines, dentistry (stomatology) is progressively growing since 1949 when the new China was founded. Due to the closing of the country to international discourse for several decades, international counterparts know very little about dentistry or stomatology, including the sub-discipline oral and maxillofacial surgery. This paper is aimed to introduce the scope, give a brief history, update clinical and basic research, and discuss the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China. It will hopefully help international colleagues to have an insight into the developmental history, education system, clinical and basic research achievements, as well as the prospective future of oral and maxillofacial surgery in 展开更多

Treatment of head and neck cancer with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy can cause oral damage.Longterm treatment can damage the salivary glands, the oral mucosa, and the maxilla, leading to altered production of saliva and to multiple infections. These lesions can be prevented, limited or avoided by thorough evaluation prior to treatment and by therapeutic followup and preventive measures. The dentist must have strong medical knowledge of the possible short-,medium-,and long-term oral complications of the cancer treatment, and must have knowledge of the protocols for oral management of cancer patients. The availability of a multidisciplinary medical team together with a dentist to attend to the patient prior to the cancer treatment,as well as close communication between team members during and after treatment,is crucial. The aim of the present study was review the stomatological management of head and neck cancer patients treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and summarizing current treatments, therapeutic innovation and tissue regeneration perspectives. 展开更多

Oral and maxillofacial diseases are a group of high-incidence disorders that affect people’s life quality to a great extent, while the wet and highly movable environment of the related regions brings challenges to traditional therapies.Faced with the obstacles of insufficient adhesive strength and ensuing short drug retention time, conventional oral therapeutic agents often have difficulty in achieving their desired efficacy.Oral and maxillofacial wet-adhesive materials have the advantages of excellent wet environment retention, internal stability, plasticity, and clinical potential, thus have become a significant research direction in the field of oral related disorders healing. In the past decade, the development of oral adhesive materials with good wet adhesion has accelerated based on the chemical molecular interaction, physical interlocking, and biological adhesion mechanisms, including biomimetic-inspired materials, naturally derived polymer–based materials and adhesive electrospun fiber films. These fancy wet-adhesive materials can be used for oral mucosal drug delivery, oral vaccination, wound healing, and bone defects treatments.Despite their numerous novel applications,wet-adhesive materials in stomatology still face unresolved challenges from material and biological aspects. Here, advances in designs of oral and maxillofacial wetadhesive materials are reviewed in terms of design backgrounds, attachment mechanisms, and common classifications.Recent demonstrations of wet-adhesive materials for oral and maxillofacial region medical applications from drug delivery to multifunctional tissue treatments are presented. To conclude, current challenges and prospects on potential applications of oral and maxillofacial wet-adhesive materials are also briefly discussed. 展开更多
