Static stretching (SST) is applied in various fields to not only increase muscle flexibility but also reduce stress. Additionally, conscious slower breathing (CSB) predominates parasympathetic activity, causing a relaxing effect. These results indicate that combining SST and CSB may be more useful in reducing stress. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of this combination remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of the combination of SST and CSB on autonomic activity and stress in adult women. Methods: Eleven healthy Japanese adult female participants performed SST with nonconscious natural breathing for 20 min. The same participants performed SST in combination with CSB (2 s inspiratory and 4 s expiratory) for 20 min on another day. Salivary cortisol and chromogranin A levels were measured before and after stretching as stress markers of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system. The coefficient of variation of the R-R interval (CVR-R) and high-frequency component (HF), which reflect parasympathetic nerve activity, and heart rate and low-frequency component (LF)/HF ratio, which reflect sympathetic nerve activity, were measured before, during, and after stretching. Results: SST decreased cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, CVR-R, HF, or LF/HF ratio. The combination of SST and CSB increased CVR-R and HF levels in addition to decreasing cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, or LF/HF levels. Conclusion: These results indicate that the combination of SST and CSB may increase parasympathetic activity and reduce stress. However, future randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes should support this conclusion.展开更多

Thus, the studies on machining deformation rules induced by residual stresses largely depend on correctly and efficiently measuring the residual stresses of workpieccs. A modified layer-removal method is proposed to measure residual stress by analysing the characteristics of a traditional, layer-removal method. The coefficients of strain release are then deduced according to the simulation results using the finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the residual stress in a 7075T651 aluminium alloy plate is measured using the proposed method, and the results are then analyzed and compared with the data obtained by the traditional methods. The analysis indicates that the modified layer-removal method is effective and practical for measuring the residual stress distribution in pre-stretched aluminium alloy plates.展开更多

In this work cis-polybutadiene samples were swollen in a poor solvent, CHCl3/EtOH (1/1 v/v), for different times. It was found that both the initial modulus and the stress peak on stretching decreased in magnitude with increasing swelling time and the peak disappeared entirely after 1 hour of swelling. On further swelling the initial modulus increased somewhat and a small stress peak re-appeared after swelling for 2 h. The disappearance of the stress peak after swelling is interpreted as the result of disruption of cohesional entanglements present in the initial rubber sample. The re-appearance of a small stress peak and the increase of modulus on further swelling are interpreted as being of the same nature as the phenomenon of anti-plasticization. It is the result of forming some new cohesional entanglements of larger binding energies through longer range chain segmental motions excited after the disruption of the previously existing cohesional entanglements in the rubber. Thus an understanding of the stress peak on stretching a high molar mass rubber and the phenomenon of anti-plasticization on molecular level has been put forward.展开更多

The micropolar model introduced by Eringen is used to describe the working fluid. The transformed self similar ordinary differential equations together with the associated boundary conditions are solved numerically by an algorithm based on quasi-linearization and multilevel discretization. The effects of some physical parameters on the flow and heat transfer are discussed and presented through tables and graphs. The present investigations may be beneficial in the flow and thermal control of polymeric processing.展开更多

Nevertheless, the effects of different unloading positions and unloading times have not been investigated. In this study, unloading-reloading tests on three materials (AL6061, HSLA and Q195) were conducted. The stress exhibits a rapid rise momentarily upon reloading and stabilizes afterward while the post stress-strain curve deviates up or down from the monotonic tensile curve. The ductility is enhanced by the unloading-reloading process in general. Different unloading positions and unloading times have different degrees of influence on the stretching of these metals. The effect of loading conditions on a medium manganese steel was further studied. The functions to modify the post stress-strain relationship after unloading-reloading were established.展开更多

Both strong and weak concentrations of microelements are taken into account. Suitable transformations are employed for the conversion of partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. Solutions to the resulting problems are developed with a homotopy analysis method (HAM). The angular velocity, skin friction coefficient, and wall couple stress coefficient are illustrated for various parameters.展开更多
