This study presents the analytical solution of vertical drains with vacuum combined surcharge preloading. The surcharge was considered to be time-dependent preloading due to its reflection of the real situation. Moreover, the free strain, instead of equal strain hypothesis of the surface, was adopted for the mathematical rigor. Both vertical and horizontal drainages, along with the well resistance were considered.Besides, the time-dependent surcharge preloading was resolved with the impulse theorem which has been presented in the study, and the solutions for pore water pressure and degree of consolidation were derived by applying the approach of separation of variables.Furthermore, the solution is compared with previous solutions and numerical solutions, and the results verify the correctness of the proposed model.展开更多

A new type of electrical prefabricated vertical drain (ePVD) and a new electroosmotic drainage system are suggested to allow the application of the new method. This combined method is then field-tested and compared with the conventional vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method. The monitoring and foundation test results show that the new method induces a settlement 20% larger than that of the conventional vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method in the same treatment period, and saves approximately half of the treatment time compared with the vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method according to the finite element prediction of the settlement. The proposed method also increases the vane shear strength of the soil significantly. The bearing capacity of the ground improved by use of the new proposed method raises 118%. In comparison, there is only a 75% rise when using the vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method during the same reinforcement period. All results indicate that the proposed combined method is effective and suitable for reinforcing the soft clay ground. Besides, the voltage applied between the anode and cathode increases exponentially versus treatment time when the output current of power supplies is kept constant. Most of the voltage potential in electroosmosis is lost at electrodes, leaving smaller than 50% of the voltage to be effectively transmitted into the soil.展开更多

Based on the concentric cylinder shearing theory, considering the changes of pile shape(such as, taper angle and diameters of pile base, etc.), the load-transfer of special-shaped pile was built. The accuracy of the developed simplified approach was verified by numerical simulation model with the same condition. Then, the influence factors, such as, taper angles, the diameter of pile base, surcharge, and pile-soil interface parameters were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the developed simplified approach can calculate NSF of special-shaped pile under surcharge effectively. A limited parametric study indicates that in many practical situations special-shaped piles(such as belled wedge pile shown in this work) offer a design option that is more economical than traditional uniform cross-section piles.展开更多

Due to the increase in growth of urban areas and the limitations in use of flat grounds, many structures are built near slopes and retaining walls. During earthquakes, these structures can apply an additional surcharge on the wall. The intensity and location of the surcharge is of considerable importance on the seismic displacements of the soil wall. In this study, by using the limit analysis and upper bound theorem, seismic permanent displacement of the soil wall under surcharge has been analyzed. Thus, a formulation is presented for calculating the yield acceleration and seismic displacement for different surcharge conditions. The effect of seismic acceleration, surcharge intensity, its location and soil properties is investigated. A parameter called the "displacement coefficient" is proposed, and is a potential modification for Newmark’s sliding-block method.展开更多

The hydraulic boundary conditions at both top and bottom of the consolidating soil are modelled as impeded drainage. The impeded drainage is described by using the third type boundary condition with a characteristic factor of drainage efficiency. Fully drained and undrained boundary conditions can also be modelled by applying an infinite and a zero characteristic factor, respectively. Simultaneous radial and vertical flow conditions are considered, together with the effects of drain resistance and smear. An increase in total stress due to multi-ramp loading is reasonably modelled as a function of both time and depth. A solution to calculate excess pore-water pressure at any arbitrary point in soil is derived, and the overall average degree of consolidation is obtained. It shows that the proposed solution can be used to analyze not only vertical-drain consolidation but also one-dimensional consolidation under either one-way or two-way vertical drainage conditions. The characteristic factors of drainage efficiency of top and bottom boundaries have a potentially important influence on consolidation. The boundary may be considered fully drained when the characteristic factor is greater than 100 and fully undrained when the characteristic factor is less than 0.1. The stress distribution along depth induced by the surcharge loading has a limited effect on the overall average degree of consolidation.展开更多

The method CPCM1 combineschemical stabilization and vacuum preloading (VP), while CPCM2 is similar to CPCM1 but includes boththe application of surcharge and use of geo-bags to provide confinement during surcharge preloading. The key advantage of CPCM2 using geo-bags is that the surcharge can be immediately applied on thechemically stabilized slurries. Two types of geo-bags were investigated under simulated land filling anddyke conditions, respectively. The test results show that the shear strength (cu) of treated slurry byCPCM2 is generally much higher than that by CPCM1. Besides, the use of CPCM2 can significantly reducethe treatment time due to the short drainage paths created by geo-bags. Overall, CPCM2 allows fasterconsolidation and higher preloading that help to achieve higher mechanical properties of the stabilizedslurry. There are consistent relationships between cU and water content of slurries treated by CPCM2.Several important observations were also made based on comparisons of experimental data. 2015 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Parametric analyses including the degree of inclination and the distance between soil and pile are carried out herein. When the displacement of soil on the left side and right side of a pile is identical, deformation of a vertical pile and an inclined pile is highly close in both cases of surcharge load and uniform soil movement. When the couple effect of soil displacement and axial load occurs, settlement of an inclined pile is greater than that of a vertical pile under the same axial load, and bearing capacity of an inclined pile is smaller than that of a vertical pile. This is quite different from the case when the inclined pile is not affected by soil displacement. For inclined piles, P-Δ effect of axial load would lead to a large increase in bending moment, however, for the vertical pile, P-Δ effect of axial load can be neglected. Although the direction of inclination of piles is reverse, deformation of piles caused by uniform soil movement is totally the same. For the inclined piles discussed herein, bending moment(-8 m to-17 m under the ground) relies heavily on uniform soil movement and does not change during the process of applying axial load. When the thickness of soil is less than the pile length, the greater the thickness of soil, the larger the bending moment at lower part of the inclined pile. When the thickness of soil is larger than the pile length, bending moment at lower part of the inclined pile is zero.展开更多

The stress distribution along depth induced by the surcharge loading has a limited effect on the overall average degree of consolidation.

文摘In this paper, the effectiveness, applicability and validity of chemicalephysical combined methods(CPCMs) for treatment of marine clay (MC) slurries were evaluated. 文摘The couple effect of soil displacement and axial load on the single inclined pile in cases of surcharge load and uniform soil movement is discussed in detail with the methods of full-scale field tests and finite element method. When the thickness of soil is larger than the pile length, bending moment at lower part of the inclined pile is zero.

文摘According to the limit equilibrium state of soils behind rigid walls and the pseudo-static approach,a general closed-form solution to seismic and static active earth pressure on the walls, which considers shear and tension failure of the retained soil,is put forward using a variational calculus method. The application point of the active resultant force specified in the proposed method is explained with a clear physical meaning related to possible movement modes of the walls. In respect of the derived nine dependent equations reflecting the functional characteristics of the earth pressure, the proposed method can be performed easily via an implicit strategy. There are 13 basic factors related to the retained soils, walls, and external loads to be involved in the proposed method. The tension crack segment of the slip surface is obviously influenced by these parameters, apart from vertical seismic coefficient and geometric bounds of the surcharge, but the shear slip segment maintains an approximately planar shape almost uninfluenced by these parameters.Noticeably, the proposed method quantitatively reflects that the resultant of the active earth pressure is always within a limited range under different possible movements of the same wall.
