However, the association was not well documented in Chinese due to the complexity of Chinese foods. We mainly assessed the dietary patterns and examined their effects on metabolic syndrome among Chinese adults. Four dietary patterns including 'Refined Grains & Vegetables" Pattern, 'Dairy & Eggs' Pattern, 'Organ Meat & Poultry' Pattern, and 'Coarse Grains & Beans' Pattern were extracted. 'Dairy & Eggs' Pattern was associated with a decreased odds of metabolic syndrome in women, and 'Coarse Grains & Beans' Pattern was associated with a decreased odds of hypertension in men. These results provided a scientific basis for future research and dietarv euideline Perfection. 展开更多

Background:Empty nose syndrome(ENS)is an iatrogenic disorder that most commonly presents with paradoxical nasal obstruction.Diagnosis of ENS is based mainly on symptomatology and surgical history.Symptomatic or surgical treatment is typically offered to patients.Case presentation:A 17-year-old Chinese male presented with ENS following inferior turbinate resection. His main symptoms were dizziness and nasal congestion. He was diagnosed with a traditional Chinese medicine syndrome pattern of liver yang ascending.Acupuncture treatment involved needling ST 36(Zusanli)GB 20(Fengchi),PC 6(Neiguan),LI 4(Hegu),LR 3(Taichong),LR 2(Xingjian),GB 43(Xiaxi),DU 20(Baihui),EX-HN3(Yintang),ST 2(Sibai),and LI 20(Yingxiang).Near complete resolution of dizziness and nasal congestion were achieved after 2 treatments. Conclusion:Acupuncture may be used to resolve symptoms of ENS.Acupoint selection and needle manipulation should be based on TCM pattern diagnosis. 展开更多

Syndrome pattern (SP) is a core concept of Chinese medicine (CM) and is used to diagnose and treat patients based on an overall analysis of symptoms and signs. This study aimed to systematically review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using the SP concept and to demonstrate how the SP concept could be applied to the study design of parallel RCTs, considering a gold standard of clinical research. After conducting a brief systematic review by way of a PubMed search, we analyzed how the SP concept was applied to the design of RCT in a CM herbal medicine trial. We then formulated possible research questions, applied the SP concept to answer the research questions, and suggested possible RCT designs to be used for conducting future trials. Fourteen RCTs were included in our systematic review, and three key points of the SP concept were formulated for the design of parallel RCTs: the time point of SP diagnosis between before and after randomization; the relationship between the international classification of diseases (ICD) and SP for the inclusion of target population; and the proper diagnostic method of SP. In this study, we formulated three possible research questions and then suggested perspectives for five possible RCT models arrived at using SP concepts. Future trials applying SP concept to RCTs should overcome the shortcomings of past SP trials, moving CM forward from experience-based to evidence-based medicine. 展开更多

Objective: To explore the correlation between single acupoints used and the recurrence rate of cystitis among cystitis-prone women receiving acupuncture as a prophylactic treatment. Methods: In all, 58 cystitis-prone women were included in the analysis. Customised acupuncture treatments were given twice a week, over 4 weeks. The main effect parameter was the number of cystitis episodes during the 6-month observation time. Residual urine was measured at baseline, 2, 4 and 6 months using portable ultrasound equipment. Sympathetic and vagotone nerve activities were measured by using skin conductance and respiratory sinus arrhythmia, respectively. Results: The main acupoints used for patients with Kidney (Shen) qi/yang deficiency were Shenshu (BL23), Taixi (KI3), Zhongji (CV3), Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Pangguangshu (BL2.8), compared with Taichong (LR3), CV3, BL28, Yinlingquan (SP9) and SP6 for Liver (Gan) qi stagnation, and SP6, CV3, BL28, Zusanli (ST36) and SP9 for Spleen (Pi) qi/yang deficiency patients. The combination BL23 and KI3 were used in 16 women, 13 of which were Kidney pattern related patients. When used, the number of symptomatic episodes were reduced to a third compared with what occurred in the 42 women where this combination was not used (3/16 vs. 28/42, P〈0.05). BL23 application correlated to a significant reduction in residual urine measured a few days after treatment. Patients with the pattern of Spleen qi/yang deficiency had an initial increase in residual urine after treatments. Conclusion: Treating Kidney pattern related patients with the combination of BL23 and KI3 resulted in far better outcome than other points/combination of points for other Chinese medicine diagnoses. The acupoint SP6 may be less indicated than previously assumed when treating cvstitis-Drone women DroDhvlacticalIv. 展开更多

Objective: To analyze the similarities and differences of the applications of "the lung and large intestine being interior-exteriorly related"between the ancient and modern clinical practices, and to reveal the theory meaning.Method: Based on the ancient and modern medical cases database, 245 ancient medical records and 373 modern medical records were studied with the general statistical description and analysis of association rules, and the results were compared to summarize the similarities and differences of the regular pattern of syndrome and treatment on lung-large intestine related diseases in ancient and modern medical records. Results: In modern medical cases, intestinal diseases appeared with the main symptom of constipation due to deficiency of lung qi and qi stagnation of large intestine were always treated by purgation together with replenishing and restoring lung qi. In ancient medical cases, large intestine heat was always caused by lung heat and a variety of diarrhea symptoms appeared. They were always treated by clearing heat and moistening lungs. In addition, the symptom of bound stool caused by qi stagnation of large intestine due to lung qi stagnation was always treated by lowering lung qi to regulate and smooth large intestine qi. And Armeniae Amarum Semen was used by both as a core medicinal herb. Conclusion: Ascending-descending of qi movement is the core of the lung and large intestine relationship. In other words, the lung and the large intestine communicate through qi. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the quality and consistency of recommendations in the clinical practice guidelines(CPGs) for hypertension in Chinese medicine(CM). Methods: CM CPGs were identified from 5 electronic databases and hand searches through related handbooks published from January 1990 to December 2013. Three reviewers independently appraised the CPGs based on the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation(AGREE Ⅱ) instrument, and compared the CPGs' recommendations on CM syndrome pattern classification and treatment. Results: Five CM CPGs for hypertension were included. The quality score of the evidence-based(EB) guideline was higher than those of the consensus-based with no explicit consideration of evidence-based(CB-EB) and the consensus-based(CB) guidelines. Three out of five patterns in the CPGs were recommended by the EB guideline. Tianma Gouteng Formula(天麻钩藤复方) in the EB guideline was recommended mostly for hypertension patients with pattern of ascendant hyperactivity of Gan(Liver)-yang and pattern of yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity in the CPGs. Acupuncture and massage were recommended for Grade Ⅰ and Grade Ⅱ hypertension with severe symptoms weakening the quality of life in the EB guideline. For Grade Ⅰ and Grade Ⅱ hypertension, CM could be used alone, while for Grade Ⅲ hypertension, they should be used in combination with Western medicines. Conclusion: The quality of EB guideline was higher than those of CB and CB-EB CPGs in CM for hypertension and CM should be prescribed alone or combined with Western medicines based on the grade of hypertension. 展开更多
