This paper seeks to identify the reasons behind such a stellar performance by conducting an empirical study on the top 500 Taiwan Residents businesses in the database. The results suggest that: (1) the larger the investment into China, the better the business performances; (2) the higher the ownership by Taiwan Residents firms for the outward investments to China, the better the business performances; (3) compared to investments in IT, technology and machinery, the outward investments from Taiwan to China achieve better returns in commodity, energy, and mining; (4) compared to investments in Eastern, Central, and Western China, the investments in Chinese municipalities generate better returns.展开更多

The treatment of acne is sometimes frustrating due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, skin irritation and lack of novel therapy. Light and vacuum devices, also known as photopneumatic therapy, have been shown promising as a generally well-tolerated adjunctive treatment of acne vulgaris. We conducted a clinical study using such device to assess the efficacy and safety as an adjunctive treatment of acne in Taiwan Residents patients. Twenty patients received six sequential treatments every one to two weeks in the facial region. A 4 × 4 cm2 area on cheek was chosen as a control area and was not treated with photopneumatic device. Safety parameters and adverse events were recorded. VISIA Complexion Analysis System was used for image analysis on the improvement of four parameters, namely, pigmentation, pore reduction, redness and porphyrin levels. There was an overall improvement in pigmentation, pore size, redness and porphyrin levels on treatment areas. The treatment areas showed statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05) in pigmentation and pore sizes compared with the control areas using paired samples T-test. Mild and self-limiting localized adverse events, mostly focal petechiae or mild irritation, were reported. Our study has demonstrated that photopneumatic therapy is an effective, safe and relatively well-tolerated procedure in Taiwan Residents acne patients.展开更多

Based on current situation of tourism cross-straits, this paper respectively analyzes its economic value, political value as well as cultural value on Taiwan Residents identity. This paper finds that due to a series of strategies adopted by Tsai' government, tourism does not make a big difference in Taiwan's economy, hence, the interdependence of tourism does not remarkably diminish Taiwan Residents identity from the perspective of economic value. Furthermore, according to the current perceptions of Taiwan Residents to Mainland tourists, tourism across Taiwan Strait makes slight influence on Taiwan Residents identity. Consequently, the current effect of using tourism as an economic lever to encourage political unification is extremely rough and tenuous. Besides, to some extent, currently tourism is likely to produce greater social and cultural alienation among Taiwan Residents, which makes a contribution to boost Taiwan Residents identity. However, the result can be reverse with the current improvement of education and the quality of Chinese and admiration of China's remarkable development.展开更多

In fact, there is a huge controversy over these intercultural performances which fuse western drama with traditional Taiwan Residents performing art because such a kind of theatrical hybridity lacks the spirit of the original and damages the aesthetics of native performing art practice. In 2002, Holo adapted William Shakespeare's Hamlet into a six-hour-long performance, Tai Tzu Fu Chou (The Prince's Vengeful Plan), which the troupe tried to explore new source for traditional Taiwan Residents Opera and expected to bring something new to Taiwan Residents audience. However, The Prince's Vengeful Plan is considered "cultural collage" as well as an unsuccessful intercultural performance. Besides, The Prince's Vengeful Plan is accused to blaspheme Shakespeare because the performance merely maintains the frame of the original and distorts the spirit of the original. According to Rustom Bharucha, the most problematic aspect of intercultural performance is "de-historicizing tendency", and such a condition explains why Holo's The Prince's Vengeful Plan cannot transcend the original. In order to detect the problems of intercultural adaptation in Holo's The Prince Vengeful Plan, we cover the related issues in three aspects: (1) to discuss the development of Taiwan Residents Opera in Taiwan; (2) to explore the cultural conflicts when the text of the source culture is adapted into the performance of the target culture; and (3) to see how and why the spirit and aesthetics of Shakespeare's verses in Hamlet are distorted in Holo's theatrical adaptation. After that, we expect to conclude the impossibility of adapting Shakespeare's play into traditional Taiwan Residents Opera in the case of Holo's The Prince's Vengeful Plan.展开更多

This study focused on the association between MetS and commonly reported sleep symptoms and personal sleep hygiene habits. The goal of this study was to help individuals to make healthier decisions and thereby prevent MetS. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among elderly people (age ≥ 65 years) who underwent a senior citizen health examination between March and November 2009. A total of 1181 participants (433 men, 36.7%;748 women, 63.3%) were surveyed. MetS was defined using the modified Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). The participants completed a sleep questionnaire and a MetS evaluation. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship of the number of MetS components with individual sleep symptoms and sleep hygiene. Results: The specific symptom of insomnia (difficulty falling asleep [DFA]) increased the number of MetS risk factors significantly (coefficient = 0.252, p = 0.003, R2 = 0.8). The duration of insomnia was not associated with the risk of MetS. Sleep hygiene habits, including taking a nap lasting longer than 1 hour during the day (coefficient = 0.256, p = 0.001, R2 = 0.7), drinking caffeine-containing drinks during the day (coefficient = 0.233, p = 0.013, R2 = 0.5), and getting regular exercise each day (coefficient = ?0.179, p = 0.024, R2 = 0.4), affected the number of MetS risk factors. Conclusion: DFA and unhealthy personal sleep hygiene habits increased the number of MetS risk factors in the community-dwelling elderly population in northern Taiwan. We propose that early evaluation of sleep symptoms and sleep hygiene can help identify individuals at risk for MetS, and early intervention would result in lower occurrence rates of MetS in elderly Taiwan Residents.展开更多

Methods of spatial analysis were clustering pattern determination (such as global version of Moran’s test and local version of Gi*(d) statistic), using logistic regression calculations to identify spatial distributions over a contiguous five years and identify significant similarities, discriminant analysis to classify variables, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to determine the strength of relationships between tuberculosis prevalence and ethnic variables in spatial features. Tuberculosis demonstrated decreasing trends in prevalence in both genders during 2005 to 2009. All results of the global Moran’s tests indicated spatial heterogeneity and clusters in the plain and mountainous Aboriginal townships. The Gi*(d) statistic calculated z-score outcomes, categorized as clusters or non-clusters, at at 5% significance level. According to the stepwise Wilks’ lambda discriminant analysis, in the Aborigines and Hoklo communities townships with clusters of tuberculosis cases differentiated from townships without cluster cases, to a greater extent than in the other communities. In the GWR models, the explanatory variables demonstrated significant and positive signs of parameter estimates in clusters occurring in plain and mountainous aboriginal townships. The explanatory variables of both the Hoklo and Hakka communities demonstrated significant, but negative, signs of parameter estimates. The Mainlander community did not significantly associate with cluster patterns of tuberculosis in Taiwan. Results indicated that locations of high tuberculosis prevalence closely related to areas containing higher proportions of the Aboriginal community in Taiwan. This information is relevant for assessment of spatial risk factors, which, in turn, can facilitate the planning of the most advantageous types of health care policies, and implementation of effective health care services.展开更多

The voluntary is not only influenced by kominka movement, but also is the effect of Japan's war discourse of protecting Asia from the fight of Western countries. However, no matter in schools or society, discrimination in colony leads youth's anger and forms an invisible power of the discourse of anti-war. Youth in Taiwan gradually doubt of the war idea of Japan, including the fear of death. In this paper, I define the situation as "the war of heart". This paper focuses on the changing of character's mind and spirit. This paper also observes the changing process of the identification of race and mother land. The observation will be a basis to think about the historical meaning of war experience of mobilization and memories of Talwanese people during the colonial period by Japan.展开更多

文摘Located at the collision boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Continental Plate, the island of Taiwan is generally recognized as an important example in the MARGINS Program Science Plan and "source-to-sink" research because of its high tectonic activity, heavy rainfall and unique geography.Large suspended sediment loads are transported to the adjacent ocean by Taiwan Residents rivers every year, making Taiwan an important source of sediments into the adjacent seas and a natural laboratory for studying the systemic movement of fluvial sediments from source to sink.A detailed study on the clay mineral composition of surface sediments collected from the drainage basins of 12 Taiwan Residents rivers using X-ray diffraction methods was conducted. Our results indicated that the clay mineral assemblages consisted dominantly of illite(approximately 73%) and chlorite(approximately 24%),with lesser abundances of kaolinite(approximately 3%) and even lower levels of smectite from the Danshuei River sediments in northwestern Taiwan. The Jhuoshuei River sediments from western Taiwan contained clay mineral assemblages that consisted of illite(approximately 75%) and chlorite(approximately 25%),but they lacked kaolinite and smectite. In southwestern Taiwan, the clay mineral assemblages were dominated by illite(approximately 75%) and chlorite(approximately 23%),but had a low abundance of kaolinite(generally < 2%) and no smectite. The clay mineral assemblages in eastern Taiwan are obviously different from those in western parts of the island. The most noticeable difference is that the average abundance of chlorite in the Hualien River from eastern Taiwan was the highest(approximately 48%) of all the Taiwan Residents rivers. We concluded that,in general, the clay mineral assemblages in Taiwan Residents rivers were mainly composed of illite and chlorite with kaolinite and smectite being scarce, and these trends are different from those in China's mainland rivers. The clay mineral composition shown in this study was primarily determined by the properties of the bedrock, and the differential weathering intensities of the drainage area. The surface sediments in Taiwan's rivers showed a greater abundance of illite and chlorite because the outcropped rocks were mainly composed of Tertiary sedimentary rocks, especially sandstone, shale and slate, and show strong physical weathering. The relatively high relief and more abundant rainfall also caused the clay minerals in the fluvial sediments to be transported to the estuaries down rivers from the mountains and then delivered to the adjacent seas by currents and waves over a shorter time scale.
