The quick spread of the epidemic since 2019 together with fast advancing of technology has exposed teachers to online education, including Teaching Chinese as a Second Language(TCSL)classrooms. Some Chinese as a Second Language(CSL)teachers were reluctant to utilize technology tools in their teaching due to the lack of technological knowledge. Thus, this study designed a CSL curriculum with the lens of the TPACK framework(Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge).Nearpod was specifically adopted as a web-based technology tool to support the teaching Chinese language due to its powerful functions provided.Nearpod allows teachers to design interactive activities in multiple ways to facilitate interactions and collaboration in the CSL learning process. This paper aimed to help Chinese teachers improve their understanding of how to effectively integrate technology into CSL teaching.Chinese teachers will develop a deeper comprehension of distance teaching from the perspectives of technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge, enhance students’deeper learning, and promote interaction and collaboration in L2 class. The effective use of the technology can develop language skills in a meaningful context knowledge with the guidance of pedagogical content knowledge. 展开更多

In the context of economic globalization,English has become increasingly essential for students’communication and professional activities, necessitating higher proficiency in speaking and listening. The theory of second language acquisition posits that college English teaching can purposefully guide students’learning and facilitate unconscious language acquisition.By integrating an output-oriented teaching method, students are provided with opportunities to practice and apply English, thereby addressing the traditional issue of“separation of learning and use.”This paper examines the application value of the output-oriented teaching method in college English under the second language acquisition theory and proposes several strategies to enhance college English classroom teaching. The goal is to develop students’linguistic competence and improve their practical English skills. 展开更多

This paper aims to explore how the study of sociolinguistics can benefit teachers, particularly in the context of teaching English as a Foreign Language(EFL)in China. The article will first examine how sociolinguistic knowledge can reshape teachers’perceptions of“English,”focusing on aspects such as English varieties,World Englishes, and Chinese English.Following that, the article discusses the necessity of rethinking current practices in English language teaching, including the nativeness paradigm and the concept of communicative competence based on a reconceptualized view of“English.”Additionally, the discussion will focus on how teachers, informed by sociolinguistic awareness of non-native teachers’identities and teacher agency, can address and resolve existing challenges in EFL teaching. Finally, the article will conclude by summarizing the key issues discussed and highlighting the significance of studying sociolinguistics for language practitioners in China. 展开更多

Teaching and learning a language are influenced by an imagined community involving interaction among members in possible worlds. From an empirical standpoint, relatively little is known about how Chinese language lecturers see their possible memberships to the communities wherein students from different countries participate,or how this perception affects their teaching practice and innovative pedagogies. In order to address this gap, this study explores the teaching lives of four lecturers who teach Chinese as a second language(CSL)to foreign students in China.Drawing upon a three-year longitudinal study of interview data triangulated with journal entries and classroom observation, the findings reveal that lecturers’imagined identities may transform into practical identities due to the idea of treating foreign students as legitimate foreigners but illegitimate Chinese language users, and the intensified pressures and insecurities of being a part-time lecturer. However, the combined efforts of lecturers’perseverance, knowledge and competence, institutional support, available educational resources, and positive evolution of identity may prevent lecturers’imagined communities from collapsing, and possibly facilitate a shift in identification from“struggling teacher”to“determined teacher.”Relevant implications for teaching Chinese and teacher education are discussed. 展开更多

The expanding role of the Chinese language in international communications has become increasingly prominent as China’s comprehensive national power continues to grow, leading to a significant rise in the number of Chinese language learners.Since online teaching is not limited by time and space, its application is widespread. For beginners in the Chinese language, the Chinese characters are both a priority and a challenge. The“Chinese Character Classification,”also known as the“Six Writings,”is the earliest systematic theory of Chinese character structures, and teaching Chinese characters in categories based on the“Chinese Character Classification”is a method that fits the cognition of beginners. In order to teach Chinese characters in a targeted approach, based on the collection and analysis of the common errors of Chinese characters among beginners,(1)this paper proposes that(a)the intuitive method can be applied to teach pictographic characters, indicative characters, and associative compound characters in online teaching;(b)the inductive-deductive method of“basic characters to new characters”can be applied for the teaching of pictophonetic characters and associative compound characters;(c)the learning of character patterns should be approached in a whole-part-whole process, while importance should be attached to the suggestion of the frequency effect with a view to facilitating the online learning of Chinese characters for beginners. The aim of this paper is to provide some practical implications for the online teaching of Chinese characters to foreigners. 展开更多

With the progress and development of society and the continuous advancement of curriculum standard reform, society has higher requirements for students’English skills. The junior high school stage is the best time to cultivate students’communication skills, however, junior high school English classes are currently still based on traditional teaching as the main teaching method, which only focuses on cultivating students’reading and writing skills, thus neglecting the training of listening and speaking skills.Despite its evident benefits, the implementation of the task-based language teaching(TBLT)method in junior high school English communication classes is not without challenges. The current state of these classes reveals a significant gap in the integration of communicative tasks into the teaching process. This gap stems from a variety of factors, including the lack of appropriate resources, insufficient teacher training, and the deeply ingrained reliance on traditional teaching methods. This study will briefly explain the definition and characteristics of the task-based language teaching method, analyze the current situation of junior high school English communication classes, the difficulties of using TBLT in junior high school English classrooms, and the application methods of task-based teaching methods. The teaching method makes up for the shortcomings of English communication classes in junior high schools and improves the quality of teaching. 展开更多

In the field of second language acquisition(SLA),weight has been increasingly attached to the role that a problem-pos ing model of education plays in English as second/foreign language(ES/FL)teaching and learning.By exploring various concepts of the problem-posing approach, also known as critical pedagogy, and its implications for English language teaching(ELT)in the Chinese postsecondary EFL context, the paper makes a tentative attempt to acknowledge the future directions of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context. Therefore, the paper is inspired by the ever-increasing popularity of the critical pedagogical approach in the ESL context. The application of critical orientation in language education derives from critical theories of the Frankfurt School, which centers on Marxist societal beliefs of struggling against social inequalities. With the concept of critical pedagogy drawing increasing attention from language educators and teachers alike in English-speaking countries;non-native English teachers who teach in the EFL context has also begun to focus their attention on the educational philosophy as a means to help transform traditional oppressed status of the Chinese EFL learners. From this perspective, this paper,by investigating the multi-dimensional implied meanings of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context, unraveling how it works as a way of"doing"in second language(L2)teaching and learning, identifying the probable contexts of critical pedagogy and the contesta tions surrounding critical pedagogy, aims to address the significance of implementing critical pedagogy as an effective way of re forming the ailing English education condition in China. 展开更多

FIRST LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AS A MODEL FOR SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: THE TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE APPROACH IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING 被引量:11

Language development in children goes hand in hand with physical and cognitive development. Children learn their first language by imitation, but not always and not only by imitation. There seems to be some "innate capacities" that make children start to speak at the same time they do and in the way they do it. Adults learning a second language usually are controlled more by their motivation. But language input is important for both L1 and L2 acquisition. Though there are differences between CL1 and between CL2 and AL2, the way in which these learners acquire some of the grammatical morphemes is similar. This, together with some other evidence, shows that it is not only children who can acquire language. Adults can also acquire a language. But when adults acquire a language, they should also learn it. Some of the ways in which children acquire their language can be used as a model for L2 acquisition, even for Chinese students whose language is unrelated to English and whose culture is different. Learning the culture of the English-speaking countries will benefit the learning of the language. Like children, listening should also be well in advance of speaking in L2 acquisition. To train listening comprehension skills, Asher’s TPR approach proves more effective. TPR approach is at the moment limited to the beginning stage only. In order for students to gain all the five skills in a second language learning, namely, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and interpreting/translating, other methods should be used at the same time, or at later stages. 展开更多

In this study, we made references to past literatures and developed an e-learning training program for CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) teachers. The class was held from July to August, 2010, in Chinese Culture University (Taiwan), and we designed a performance-evaluation questionnaire with the Delphi method. Three months after the training program was completed, the questionnaire was given to the 30 students of the class, and they were asked to answer questions regarding their use of e-learning in the actual practice. We also asked 5 teachers to conduct experimental e-learning for us to video-record and observe. This effort allows us to discuss the use of e-learning among CSL teachers in Taiwan, come up with a conclusion and suggestions, and use the findings as references for course-planning and policies or research regarding the digital learning of Chinese. 展开更多
