METHODS: This study included 106 eyes of 58 patients with dry eye. The lipid deficiency type was defined as the LLT baseline 〈75 nm. The LLT and BR were measured at baseline and 1, 5 and 15min after the instillation of 0.1% or 0.3% sodium hyaluronate (SH) eye drops by using the LipiView ocular surface interferometer. RESULTS: In the lipid deficiency group, the LLT increased from baseline at 1rain post instillation. The LLT after the instillation of 0.1% SH was significantly higher than that after the instillation of 0.3% SH (P〈0.001). The LLT returned to baseline at 15min post instillation of 0.1% SH and at 5min post instillation of 0.3% SH. In the non-lipid deficiency group, the LLT decreased from baseline at lmin and returned to baseline at 5rain for both treatments. The BRs were not significantly different at different time points for both treatments. CONCLUSION: SH eye drops induce a short-term increase in LLT of patients with lipid deficiency. A low concentration of artificial tears have a stronger effect than a high concentration of artificial tears on the increase in LLT. in comparison, SH eye drops induce a transient and slight decrease in LLT of patients without lipid deficiency. A low concentration of artificial tears might be better for patients with lipid deficiency.展开更多

Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of 20 patients who had DALK in one eye over a three-month period. LTMH, CTFT, and CCET of the operated eyes and the unoperated fellow eyes were measured using high-definition optical coherence tomography(HD-OCT). Correlations between three OCT assessments and age, time following surgery, graft size, bed size, and the number of residual sutures were analyzed. Results: Compared to patients with keratoconus, patients with other corneal conditions had significantly higher CCET in the fellow eye(P=0.024). For all patients, CCET in the operated eye was significantly negatively correlated with the number of residual sutures(R=-0.579, P=0.008), and was significantly positively correlated with time following surgery(R=0.636, P=0.003). In the fellow eye, a significant positive correlation was found between age and CCET(R=0.551, P=0.012), and a significant negative correlation between age and CTFT(R=-0.491, P=0.028). LTMH was found to be significantly correlated between operated and fellow eyes(R=0.554, P=0.011). There was no significant correlation between LTMH and age, bed/graft size, time following surgery, or residual sutures(all possible correlations, P0.05). Conclusions: Patients with keratoconus tend to have a thinner central corneal epithelium. Corneal epithelium keeps regenerating over time after DALK. DALK did not induce a significant change in tear volume compared with the fellow eye. Postoperative tear function might depend on an individual's general condition, rather than on age, gender, bed/graft size, time following surgery, or residual sutures.展开更多

文摘Eyelid surgery is widely and extensively used in facial plastic and reconstructive surgeries. There are many categories of eyelid surgeries, the most common of which include blepharoplasty, ptosis surgery, and eyelid reconstruction. In many cases, these procedures are combined, and there are many different techniques for each type of operation.Upper eyelid blepharoplasty usually includes the excision of skin, preseptal orbicularis oculi muscle, and orbital fat.Common methods of lower eyelid blepharoplasty are the skin-muscle flap, the skin flap, and the transconjunctival.Ptosis surgery is mainly divided into three types:transcutaneous, transconjunctival, and sling surgery.Surgeons often used the Hughes or Cutler-Beard Bridge Flaps in eyelid reconstruction.Different types and methods of surgery have their own advantages and disadvantages, and postoperative complications may occur. Therefore, postoperative complications of eyelid surgeries, such as dry eye symptoms, should be taken into serious consideration.Relevant literature involving these complaints can be found in PubMed by searching the terms“dry eye”,“eyelid”,“surgery”,and other related keywords. Moreover, various ocular surface and tear film alterations may be detected using the Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI),tear film breakup time,Schirmer test, fluorescein staining, and lissamine green staining after various eyelid surgeries. As dry eye disease is prevalent in the general population,it is more urgent to figure out what we can learn from these complaints.Further exploration in this field may help surgeons to choose a better surgical method and give an accurate evaluation of the postoperative effect.
文摘AIM: To evaluate the quantitatively changes in lipid layer thickness(LLT) when 3% diquafosol eye drop is used for dry eye patients using the tear film interferometer. METHODS: A total 124 participants(32 males, 92 females;mean age, 28.9 y) diagnosed with dry eye disease(DED) received topical instillation of 4 ophthalmic solutions in one eye: diquafosol, normal saline, 0.1% sodium hyaluronate and 0.3% gatifloxacin, in a masked manner. LLT was measured using an interferometer at baseline and 20 min after the instillation of each ophthalmic solutions.RESULTS: Changes of LLT after instillation(nm, mean± standard error) were as follows: 12.6±2.0 for diquafosol(P<0.001), 1.2±2.2 for normal saline(P=0.301), 1.5±2.0 for hyaluronate(P=0.495), and 0.5±3.2 for gatifloxacin(P=0.884).CONCLUSION: Topical instillation of diquafosol increases tear film LLT in DED patients. Diquafosol 3% eye drop might be effective treatment option of evaporative DED with meibomian gland dysfunction.
文摘Objective To explore the therapeutic effects and mechanism of dry eye syndrome treated with acupuncture therapy. Methods Thirty cases (60 eyes) of dry eye syndrome were treated with both local and distal acupuncture. Jingrning (睛明 BL 1), Cuanzhu (攒竹 BL 2), Tatiyang (太阳 EX-HN 5) and Quchi (曲池 LI 11) were selected; tear secretion quantity, break up time of tear film (BUT) and expression of tear film mucin were observed before and after treatment. Results Tear secretion quantity was increased and break up time of tear film was prolonged after acupuncture therapy, indicating the significant differences (both P〈0.05); meanwhile, the expression of tear film mucin was increased [(0.67 ± 0.1) ng vs (0.89 ± 0.23) ng, P〈0.05]. Conclusion Acupuncture can promote the expression of tear film mucin, enhance the stability of tear film and remarkably improve the symptoms of dry eye.
文摘Background:To investigate the effect of eye rubbing on keratometry(K),aberrometry, tear film break-up-time(TFBUT)and anterior chamber depth(ACD).Methods:Volunteers without any corneal pathology or dry eyes were randomised to rubbing in one eye and the fellow-eye was control.Eye rubbing was performed for 2 min.Primary outcomes studied were anterior and posterior K changes.Secondary outcomes were changes in TFBUT,axial length(AL)&ACD,K changes in various zones, asphericity and aberrometry.Pre and post rubbing K,aberrometry,ACD and TFBUT were assessed in a predetermined sequence. The relationship of the above parameters to axial length(AL)was also assessed.Astigmatism was analysed using vector analysis. Results:Pre versus post rubbing, anterior flatter K further flattened(42.51±1.52 D vs.42.36±1.53 D,p=0.003)and the changes to J0 vector in central cornea(−0.16±0.26 D vs.-0.27±0.33 D,p=0.038)suggested change to against-the-rule(ATR)astigmatism.There was significant change in Z^(+2)_(2) polynomial following rubbing. We found a positive correlation between axial length and change in posterior K(r=0.335,p=0.020).The TFBUT reduced following eye rubbing(15.3 s vs.13.9 s,p=0.0001).There was a positive correlation between AL and increase in ACD post rubbing(r=0.300,p=0.038).There was a positive correlation between ACD and change in mean posterior K(r=0.305,p=0.035).Conclusions:In healthy eyes, following eye rubbing, there is a significant change in TFBUT and central anterior K changes towards ATR astigmatism.Longer eyes had more changes in posterior K and ACD.Whereas, eyes with deeper ACD showed more steepness of posterior K.

文摘Objective: To assess the lower tear meniscus height(LTMH), central tear film thickness(CTFT), and central corneal epithelial thickness(CCET) after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DALK). Postoperative tear function might depend on an individual's general condition, rather than on age, gender, bed/graft size, time following surgery, or residual sutures.
文摘Dry eye disease(DED),primarily classified as multifactorial ocular surface disorder, afflicts tens of millions of individuals worldwide, adversely impacting their quality of life.Extensive research has been conducted on tear film analysis over the past decades, offering a range of tests to evaluate its volume, health, and integrity.Yet,early diagnosis and effective treatment for DED continue to pose significant challenges in clinical settings.Nevertheless,by recognizing key phenomena in DED such as ocular surface inflammation, hyperosmolarity, and tear film instability, this article provides a comprehensive overview of both traditional and recently developed methods for diagnosing and monitoring DED.The information serves as a valuable resource not only for clinical diagnosis but also for further research into DED.
文摘<strong>Background:</strong> Dry eye is characterized by tear film instability, decreased tear volume and a high Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score. Face masks have been linked to dry eye complaints in recent studies. <strong>Purpose:</strong> To evaluate the changes in tear-film status and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score following prolonged use of face mask. <strong>Design:</strong> Cross-sectional study. <strong>Method:</strong> Patients between 18 to 70 years using masks regularly for at least 2 hours/day for at least 5 days/week from different eye-care centres in Dhaka were included. All subjects were divided into 4 groups. Mask use lasted approximately 2 hours/day in Group 1, 4 hours/day in Group 2, 6 hours/day in Group 3 and 8 hours or more/day in Group 4. Evaluation of symptoms, tear- film stability and tear volume was done by Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores, Tear-film Break-Up Time (TBUT) and Schirmer-1 test. Average of right & left eye’s Tear-film Break Up time (TBUT) and Schirmer-1 value were noted. <strong>Results:</strong> Total 100 patients were enrolled (n = 100). The TBUT (p < 0.001) and Schirmer-1 measurement (p = 0.01) were significantly lesser and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score were significantly higher in patients using face-masks for longer time (p < 0.001). <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Patients who wore masks for prolonged time had tear film instability, reduced tear volume and higher Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score.
