Purpose: The late Don R. Swanson was well appreciated during his lifetime as Dean of the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago, as winner of the American Society for Information Science Award of Merit for ...Purpose: The late Don R. Swanson was well appreciated during his lifetime as Dean of the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago, as winner of the American Society for Information Science Award of Merit for 2000, and as author of many seminal articles. In this informal essay, I will give my personal perspective on Don's contributions to science, and outline some current and future directions in literature-based discovery that are rooted in concepts that he developed.Design/methodology/approach: Personal recollections and literature review. Findings: The Swanson A-B-C model of literature-based discovery has been successfully used by laboratory investigators analyzing their findings and hypotheses. It continues to be a fertile area of research in a wide range of application areas including text mining, drug repurposing, studies of scientific innovation, knowledge discovery in databases, and bioinformatics. Recently, additional modes of discovery that do not follow the A-B-C model have also been proposed and explored (e.g. so-called storytelling, gaps, analogies, link prediction, negative consensus, outliers, and revival of neglected or discarded research questions). Research limitations: This paper reflects the opinions of the author and is not a comprehensive nor technically based review of literature-based discovery. Practical implications: The general scientific public is still not aware of the availability of tools for literature-based discovery. Our Arrowsmith project site maintains a suite of discovery tools that are free and open to the public (http://arrowsmith.psych.uic.edu), as does BITOLA which is maintained by Dmitar Hristovski (http:// http://ibmi.mf.uni-lj.si/bitola), and Epiphanet which is maintained by Trevor Cohen (http://epiphanet.uth.tme.edu/). Bringing user-friendly tools to the public should be a high priority, since even more than advancing basic research in informatics, it is vital that we ensure that scientists actually use discovery tools and that these are actually able to help them make experimental discoveries in the lab and in the clinic. Originality/value: This paper discusses problems and issues which were inherent in Don's thoughts during his life, including those which have not yet been fully taken up and studied systematically.展开更多

This paper is to comb the developmental history of internet emoticon and endeavor to give some hints on its future research. In this review, 88 papers are collected from the database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI). A visualization analysis is made to quantify the research hot topics and frontier, key words, author and institution with the aid of CiteSpace III. In terms of cited literature and co-cited literature, CNKI metrological visualization analysis is employed to delve into the overall trends. The results reveal that internet emoticon research has been closely related to various domains and its interdisciplinary characteristics is not in full swing.展开更多

Historical literature has both the nature of history and literature.The content is vast,the thoughts are rich.Plus,it has many values such as literature,history and philosophy.They also have accumulated a profound nat...Historical literature has both the nature of history and literature.The content is vast,the thoughts are rich.Plus,it has many values such as literature,history and philosophy.They also have accumulated a profound national culture.Various language teaching materials in the basic education stage are often carefully selected from the classic biography and the quality is fruitful.Learning these works while understanding history can enhance students’“construction and application of language”,“development and promotion of thinking”,“appreciation and creation of aesthetics”and“understanding and inheritance of culture”as core literacy has important meaning.However,there are misunderstandings in the teaching content of current historical works such as the teaching of historical essays,the narration of narrative analysis,the interpretation of historical reading,the lack of literary aesthetics,the analysis of facial analysis,the labelling and other errors directly lead to a boring and less interesting classroom teaching of historical works.Therefore,classroom teaching is difficult for students to produce affinity in Chinese history literature[1].The classroom teaching of historical literature urgently needs to return to the regression standard of living in order to restore the historical life situation and construct experiential teaching content.Thus,only in this way can it be possible to build a foundation for understanding and let students walk into historical works.This article takes an excerpt from the“Records of the Grand Historian?Xiang Yu Exposition”in the“The Feast at Hong Gate”which stated,“he calls for me,a brotherhood was form”as an example,how to appreciate the character language by restoring the historical life situation with a life perspective.展开更多
