The Essence and Implementation of Ideological and Political Education within College English Curricula: A Grounded Theory Analysis

This study adopts the grounded theory approach to critically examine the essence and implementation of Ideological and Political Education(IPE)within college English curricula at Chinese Universities.We analyzed a corpus of 80 award-winning lesson plans from the“Teaching Star Competition”held by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press to establish specific constituents that comprise IPE and identify the instructional methodologies incorporated in the teaching process.The research shows that IPE strategically merges language proficiency training with civic education,aiming to cultivate a strong national identity,solid cultural pride,and global competencies.To be more detailed,the core categories of IPE encapsulate critical thinking,professional ethics,and cross-cultural communication skills,which are based on the innovative use of technological resources and adaptive pedagogical strategies.IPE has also elaborated on the comprehensive assessment mechanisms to measure cognitive and affective outcomes,making it a multidimensional activity.Following a three-stage coding process,this study aims to contribute to this discussion regarding ideological and political education integrated into Chinese higher education institutions.The finding and conclusion in this study drawn for future curriculum developments and reformulation of educational policy suggest ways IPE could better serve in fostering well-rounded individuals capable of contributing to national and global contexts. 展开更多

Reform of College English Curriculum Setup for Non-English Majors: A Case Study of an Ordinary University in China

English learning and teaching has been a hot research topic in China since the coming of the 21 st century. By way of questionnaire surveys and interviews, the research group takes one ordinary Chinese university as a case to study the reform of College English curriculum setup. The paper focuses on study of extended courses, which are the most typical reflections of the reform in this university. In the first stage, 4,330 students are surveyed or interviewed in the pre-research process and another 1,270 participants from Grades 2013 and 2014 in the second stage fmish the questionnaire about the reform. The paper analyses the results of 1,215 valid questionnaires. The analyses and discussions in the research include four aspects, which are participants' overall attitudes towards the reform of College English curriculum setup, current situation of course teaching and assessment, degree of satisfaction with the extended courses and participants' feedbacks and suggestions. In the end of the study the existing problems in the reform are listed and suggestions are given to further reform the College English curriculum. 展开更多

The students should receive the cultivation of the professional knowledge, and at the same time, they must have a certain ability of the cross-cultural communication and the level of the professional English. In addition, the national medium and long-term educational reform and development plan (2010 - 2020) also proposed the strategic requirements to improve the quality of the higher education and the level of the internationalization, to promote the comprehensive development of the students. Because of this, the national big colleges and universities are carrying out the reform of the university English teaching in different degrees, and have achieved certain results. But today, in terms of the direction of the educational reform of the university English, the academic circles are still unable to reach an agreement. For example, to set the university courses in English, some scholars believe that because the English levels of the high school graduates enhance unceasingly, the courses with the language teaching as the main contents cannot meet the needs of the students, which need to be reduced or even eliminated, and should be replaced by the bilingual teaching with the liberal education as the contents. "College English Curriculum Requirements", edited by Department of Higher Education(2007), put forward clearly one of the key points of the national College English teaching reform was to strengthen the application of computer to college English teaching and apply computer-and-classroom-based English teaching mode, improving the previous mode dominated by a single teacher. Most colleges and universities in China have basically achieved the popularity of computer multimedia classrooms and campus networks. However, according to researches(Xia, 2002), most teachers still hold the main role of them in classes as"language interpreter"and"language instructor". Although advanced computer technology has been provided, most teachers feel confused or difficult in using it to assist their English teaching efficiently. As a consequence, computer technology fail to play its role in English classes. Driven by the great development of science and technology, computer has brought about incredible changes in every aspect of social life since 1980 s. In current times, almost every aspect of college students' life has been closely associated with computer. However, in most situations, computer is not taken as a typical language learning tool in their daily life. It is known that most students' English basis is relatively weak in vocational colleges; meanwhile, the way in which they learned English during the middle school period was basically translation- based teaching. Thus they have little or even no interest in English learning at all. In this way, discovering a new and interesting way with the aid of computer to learn English is of essential importance. Based on this, the paper discusses five major aspects under the circumstance of computer-assisted English learning. It is hoped that vocational college English teaching and learning can become more efficient by means of computer technology, finally students' English learning motivation and English competence can be enhanced to a great extent. 展开更多
