This paper focused on Japan who was as a new colonial government in Taiwan under Japanese rule,during the period of which took official buildings or urban planning mainly of a series of Western European-style architecture as a ruler’s cultural identity and a modern Taiwan policy.However,in the context of East Asian modernity,the basic colonial not only mixed Eurocentric,but also included Japan Center and the interaction between the two.Therefore,the scope of research and discussion shall have regarded to the non-Western,non-white nature of the Japanese Empire,and its colonial/modernity construction is another new model.Taiwan Governor-General’s Residence as the Governor-General’s residence for Japanese government combined administrative office,daily living,and social life,showing a symbol of Japan’s colonial ruling class,and a hostel to greet Japanese royal family and the nobility from time to time.As a mansion of both Western Baroque and Japanese style,its architectural design has class meaning,therefore it featured with a class-separation building,also combined the leisure of Western high society.The associated festivals at that time included tea party,fairs and royal family welcoming pilgrimage,the part of which with a strong political implication.This paper mainly uses the images of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Residence during the Japanese rule period and the literature at that time to restore the mixed taste and Japanese-Western style of Taiwan at that time.The Japanese colonists ruled the complex interactions of different ethnic groups in Taiwan.

The Sandwich Man:A Representative Rhetoric of Ressentiment toward the Empire in Taiwan Residents New Wave Cinema

The Sandwich Man(1983),the groundbreaking work of Taiwan Residents New Wave Cinema,had a significant impact.The movie are made up of three short films The Sandwich Man(Hou Hsiao-hsien),Xiaoqi’s Hat(Tseng Ch’ang-hsiang),and The Taste of Apples(Wan-ren),are typically seen as tales of modernity from the countryside to the city,but also contains native Taiwan Residents imperial ressentiment,particularly the ressentiment toward the American Empire in The Taste of Apples and the social sentiment of being wounded by Japan that haunts Xiaoqi’s hat,while The Sandwich Man attempts to seek to position themselves in their role.

Regeneration and anti-migration of sand waves associated with sand mining in the Taiwan Shoal

Sand waves in the Taiwan Shoal are characterized by two distinct spatial scales. Giant sand waves have a length of2 kilometers with height between 5 m and 25 m, whilst small sand waves is less than 100-m long with height less than 5 m between giant sand wave peaks(crests). A series of five high-resolution multi-beam echo-sounding surveys between 2012 and 2020 in the middle of Taiwan Shoal indicated that artificial dredging on the giant sand waves had caused sand wave reform and evolution. Overall, the removal of giant sand waves significantly affected the migration of small sand waves adjacent to the dredging site, with the latter on both sides of the former appear to migrate towards the dredging pit. Moreover, in the dredging area, new sand waves emerged with wavelength much smaller than the original giant sand waves, while the convergent pattern of the small sand waves tends to store and form the giant sand waves, which might spread far beyond the survey period.

Spatial distribution pattern of seafloor hydrothermal vents to the southeastern Kueishan Tao offshore Taiwan Island

Investigations of the diffusion activities both within and outside the seafloor hydrothermal vents, as well as related mineral genesis, have been one of the key focuses of ocean biogeochemistry studies. Many hy- drothermal vents are distributed close to the southern Okinawa Trough on the less-than-30-m deep shallow seafloor off Kueishan Tao, northeast of Taiwan Island. Investigations of temperature, pH and Eh at four depths of hydrothermal plume were carried out near Kueishan Tao at the white （24.83°N, 121.9°E） and yellow （24.83°N, 121.96°E） vents. An 87 h of temperature time series observation-undertaken near the white vent showed that tide is the main factor affecting the background environment. Based on the observed data, 3-dimensional sliced diffusion fields were obtained and analyzed. It was concluded that the plume diffused mainly from north to south due to ebb tide. The yellow vent＇s plume could effect as far as the white vent surface. From the temperature diffusion field, the vortices of the plume were observed. The Eh negative abnormality was a better indicator to search for hydrothermal plumes and locate hydrothermal vents than high temperature and low pH abnormalities.

One-year real-world outcomes of ranibizumab 0.5 mg treatment in Taiwan Residents patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy： a subgroup analysis of the REAL study

AIM： To assess the effectiveness and safety of ranibizumab 0.5 mg in Taiwan Residents patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy（PCV） by performing a retrospective exploratory subgroup analysis of the REAL study.METHODS： REAL was a 12-month, observational, prospective, non-interventional phase IV post-marketing surveillance study conducted at 9 centers in Taiwan. The study collected data as part of the routine patient visits from the medical records of patients with neovascular agerelated macular degeneration treated with ranibizumab 0.5 mg according to local standard medical practice and local label and/or reimbursement guidelines. The presence of PCV at baseline was determined using indocy received prior tanine green angiography. RESULTS： At baseline, PCV was diagnosed in 64 of the 303 enrolled patients（21.1%）. Of these, 41 patients（64.1%） hadreatment; 15（23.4%） patients had received ranibizumab. The intent-to-treat population included 58 patients; 47（80%） who received ranibizumab and 11（20%） who received ranibizumab plus photodynamic therapy（PDT; 9 patients received once, 2 patients received twice）. Bevacizumab was used as a concomitant medication in a similar percentage of patients who received ranibizumab（43%, n=20） or ranibizumab plus PDT（45%, n=5）. In patients who received ranibizumab, visual acuity（VA） at baseline was 50.1±12.9 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study letters, and the gain at month 12 was 1.1±17.8 letters. In patients who received ranibizumab plus PDT, VA at baseline was 51.4±15.9 letters, and there was a marked gain in VA at month 12（14.0±9.2 letters, P=0.0009）. In the intent-totreat population, the reduction in central retinal subfield thickness from baseline at month 12 was 69.6±122.6 μm（baseline： 310.8±109.8 μm, P=0.0004）. The safety results were consistent with the well-characterized safety profile of ranibizumab.CONCLUSION： In real-world settings, ranibizumab 0.5 mg treatment for 12 mo results in maintenance of VA and reduction in central retinal subfield thickness in Taiwan Residents patients with PCV. Improvements in VA are observed in patients who received ranibizumab plus PDT. There are no new safety findings.

First report of furuncular myiasis caused by the larva of botfly,Dermatobia hominis,in a Taiwan Residents traveler

A case of furuncular myiasis was reported for the first time in a 29-year-old young Taiwan Residents traveler returning from an ecotourism in Peru.Furuncle-like lesions were observed on the top of his head and he complained of crawling sensations within his scalp.The invasive larva of botfly,Dermatobia hominis,was extruded from the furuncular lesion of the patient.Awareness of cutaneous myiasis for clinicians should be considered for a patient who has a furuncular lesion and has recently returned from a botfly-endemic area.

Experience of Photopneumatic Therapy in Taiwan Residents Acne Patients

Acne is a disease of the pilosebaceous unit affecting both teenagers and adults. The treatment of acne is sometimes frustrating due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, skin irritation and lack of novel therapy. Light and vacuum devices, also known as photopneumatic therapy, have been shown promising as a generally well-tolerated adjunctive treatment of acne vulgaris. We conducted a clinical study using such device to assess the efficacy and safety as an adjunctive treatment of acne in Taiwan Residents patients. Twenty patients received six sequential treatments every one to two weeks in the facial region. A 4 × 4 cm2 area on cheek was chosen as a control area and was not treated with photopneumatic device. Safety parameters and adverse events were recorded. VISIA Complexion Analysis System was used for image analysis on the improvement of four parameters, namely, pigmentation, pore reduction, redness and porphyrin levels. There was an overall improvement in pigmentation, pore size, redness and porphyrin levels on treatment areas. The treatment areas showed statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05) in pigmentation and pore sizes compared with the control areas using paired samples T-test. Mild and self-limiting localized adverse events, mostly focal petechiae or mild irritation, were reported. Our study has demonstrated that photopneumatic therapy is an effective, safe and relatively well-tolerated procedure in Taiwan Residents acne patients.

The Impact of Tourism Across the Taiwan Strait on the Taiwan Residents Identity

Nowadays, the search for identity in Taiwan has been more significant today compared to the past because political parties have been attempting to use Taiwan Residents identity to impact the political loyalty, the democratization as well as language. Based on current situation of tourism cross-straits, this paper respectively analyzes its economic value, political value as well as cultural value on Taiwan Residents identity. This paper finds that due to a series of strategies adopted by Tsai' government, tourism does not make a big difference in Taiwan's economy, hence, the interdependence of tourism does not remarkably diminish Taiwan Residents identity from the perspective of economic value. Furthermore, according to the current perceptions of Taiwan Residents to Mainland tourists, tourism across Taiwan Strait makes slight influence on Taiwan Residents identity. Consequently, the current effect of using tourism as an economic lever to encourage political unification is extremely rough and tenuous. Besides, to some extent, currently tourism is likely to produce greater social and cultural alienation among Taiwan Residents, which makes a contribution to boost Taiwan Residents identity. However, the result can be reverse with the current improvement of education and the quality of Chinese and admiration of China's remarkable development.

Between Loss and Gain: Translating the Taiwan Residents Praise Ballads on the Pescadores into English

The“praise ballad”is a specific type of local folk literature handed down from generation to generation in traditional agricultural and fishing societies by means of chanting in the local vernacular dialect.It was composed and sung to express the villagers’emotions,thoughts and feelings.The content of the praise ballads sung on the Pescadores is largely and tightly connected to the hardship of fishing life because the Pescadores are surrounded by the salt waters and savaged by the Northeast monsoons.When the author of a praise ballad narrates his/her personal feeling or mood towards a particular living condition,he/she appeals to an intense emotion regarding the daunting adversity of fishing on the open seas,which is called“begging the sea”in the local Taiwan Residents dialect.Although praise ballads play a decisive role in the promotion of Penghu cultural tourism,the unique folk chansons are facing a vital predicament,namely,they are being forgotten by the people of our time and have been gradually sinking into absolute oblivion.Based on Hung Min-Tsung’s authoritative work on and collection of local Penghu praise ballads,the research seeks to examine the“loss”and“gain”in the English translations of some representative local praise ballads collected in Hung’s book.Can the original message and flavor of a praise ballad be fully retained in a Taiwan Residents-English translation via the mediation of the Chinese language?Can a Taiwan Residents-Chinese-English translational grand tour manage to faithfully render the original beauty,charm and humor of the Pescadorean songs of the old times?What can be regained and what are lost in the English translation?These are the questions the paper endeavors to investigate.

SOME PROPERTIES OF THE INTEGRATION OPERATORS ON THE SPACES F(p,q,s)

We study the closed range property and the strict singularity of integration operators acting on the spaces F(p,pα-2,s).We completely characterize the closed range property of the Volterra companion operator I_(g)on F(p,pα-2,s),which generalizes the existing results and answers a question raised in[A.Anderson,Integral Equations Operator Theory,69(2011),no.1,87-99].For the Volterra operator J_(g),we show that,for 0<α≤1,J_(g)never has a closed range on F(p,pα-2,s).We then prove that the notions of compactness,weak compactness and strict singularity coincide in the case of J_(g)acting on F(p,p-2,s).

A Critical Assessment of Professor Todd Ryan’s, “Philo on the ‘Incomprehensible Nature of the Supreme Being’ in Dialogues 2”

I begin my comments by acknowledging that Professor Ryan is correct when he states early in his paper that Philo makes common cause with Demea by arguing that philosophical reflection can yield no knowledge of the nature or essence of the divine being. Ryan asserts that Philo’s defense of this claim, as set out in the third and fourth paragraphs in Part 2, has not received the attention it deserves from commentators. This, according to Ryan, is surprising, since, if Philo is successful here, he will have effectively shut down the project of natural theology, before it can even begin. Ryan goes further, citing my work, Scepticism and Belief in Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1986) to say that Philo’s challenge receives no direct answer from Cleanthes. Instead, Cleanthes proceeds directly to formulate his version of the Argument from Design. Ryan concludes his introductory remarks by asserting that, in these two paragraphs, Philo offers not one, but two, distinct arguments for the conclusion that we can achieve no strictly philosophical knowledge of the nature of God. He then proceeds to flesh out these two arguments, and attempts to show that neither of Philo’s objections is ultimately telling against Cleanthes’ experimental natural theology.

Coexistence of urinary tuberculosis and urothelial carcinoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Taiwan has a high prevalence of tuberculosis and urothelial carcinoma.However,the simultaneous occurrence of both disorders in one patient is uncommon.Tuberculosis and urothelial carcinoma share some common risk factors and could demonstrate overlapping clinical manifestations.CASE SUMMARY Herein,we report the case of a patient who presented with fever,persistent hematuria,and pyuria.Chest computed tomography scans revealed a bilateral upper lobes cavitary lesion with fibrosis.Severe hydronephrosis of the right kidney and renal stones and cysts in the left kidney were observed.Initial microbiological testing was negative;however,a polymerase chain reaction assay of the urine confirmed a urinary tuberculosis infection.The patient was started on an anti-tuberculosis regimen.Ureteroscopy performed to resolve obstructive nephropathy revealed the incidental finding of a left middle-third ureteral tumor.Examination after biopsy and transurethral resection of the bladder tumor indicated urothelial carcinoma.The patient underwent laparoscopic nephroureterectomy,with bladder cuff excision for the right kidney and ureter,and holmium laser ablation of the ureteral lesion to preserve the left kidney and ureter.He has remained stable after the procedures.CONCLUSION Although establishing a causal relationship between tuberculosis and cancer is difficult,medical personnel should consider their correlation.

Embryonic Development and Eclosion Season of New Species Berastagia (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) from Taiwan

This paper describes a new species of the snout moth Berastagia tainanica sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) from Taiwan. From 2009 to 2016, a biology study was conducted on population dynamics and embryonic development. Spring season is the peak of the eclosion of overwintering larvae or pupae. The average longevity of adult was 14.8 ± 6.2 days (N = 174), the average number of eggs laid was 259 ± 3 eggs/moth (N = 2), the hatching rate of eggs was 95.4% (N = 262), and the average hatching time of eggs was 99.6 ± 18.6 hours (N = 68). The average body length of males was 5.64 mm ± 0.91 mm (N = 30), and the average body length of females was 6.28 mm ± 0.84 mm (N = 30). This finding indicates that female snout moths are larger than males (Global R = 0.058, P = 0.012). The snout moth eclosion rate was 16.9 moths/100 pods in the first year (2010/2011, N = 2,224 pods) and 10.9 moths/100 pods in the second year (2014/2015, N = 6,382 pods). The pod borer rate was 31.8% (N = 707) and the seed borer rate was 41.2% (N = 3,628) in the first year, whereas the pod borer rate was 76.2% (N = 6,382) in the second year.

Fuzzy cluster analysis of water mass in the western Taiwan Strait in spring 2019

The classification of the springtime water mass has an important influence on the hydrography,regional climate change and fishery in the Taiwan Strait.Based on 58 stations of CTD profiling data collected in the western and southwestern Taiwan Strait during the spring cruise of 2019,we analyze the spatial distributions of temperature(T)and salinity(S)in the investigation area.Then by using the fuzzy cluster method combined with the T-S similarity number,we classify the investigation area into 5 water masses:the Minzhe Coastal Water(MZCW),the Taiwan Strait Mixed Water(TSMW),the South China Sea Surface Water(SCSSW),the South China Sea Subsurface Water(SCSUW)and the Kuroshio Branch Water(KBW).The MZCW appears in the near surface layer along the western coast of Taiwan Strait,showing low-salinity(<32.0)tongues near the Minjiang River Estuary and the Xiamen Bay mouth.The TSMW covers most upper layer of the investigation area.The SCSSW is mainly distributed in the upper layer of the southwestern Taiwan Strait,beneath which is the SCSUW.The KBW is a high temperature(core value of 26.36℃)and high salinity(core value of 34.62)water mass located southeast of the Taiwan Bank and partially in the central Taiwan Strait.

Higher Education in Taiwan:An Observation Through the Perspective of English Language Teaching

Globalization has developed into an ideological discourse that drives change,because of the perceived immediacy and need to adapt to a new world order.It has a significant impact on the political,social,economic,cultural,and educational aspects.A visible transition has also been occurring in higher education.The world has grown extremely competitive because of the expending of globalization.Universities all over the world have to enhance their competitiveness through Englishization in higher education.Taiwan is experiencing educational reforms in higher education,in a way in which it is similar to other Asian nations,in order to maintain its competitiveness in the world.This article focuses on how globalization exacerbates competitiveness around the world,particularly in the educational sectors.The aim of this study is to review and to define how globalization is affecting higher education and in what way it has an impact on education policy in the context of Taiwan’s higher education.The effects of globalization on global citizenship will also be examined,in order to give a full reflection.
