Effect of Li and Ti additions on Lα(AI)+Mg2Si pseudobinary eutectic reaction in ternary Al-Mg-Si system has been investigated by thermoanalysis, directional solidification and metallographic techniques in this study. It has been found that Li addition causes decreasing of the volume fraction of Mg2Si, while a little amount of Ti causes to increasing, which is of a great importance to the adjustment of phase constitution and alloy properties. This study examines mechanisms for providing nuclei to equiaxed grains in the welds of pure ferritic stainless steel (FSS). The addition of the alloy element Ti to pure FSS 439 causes the precipitation of TiN, which can benefit the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Meanwhile,the initial morphology of the precipitates, the concentration multiplications of Ti, N, etc. of FSS 439 should be controlled to induce the formation of CET during the short welding process. 展开更多

The mechanical properties of castings depend on the grain size.There is evidence that titanium and boron(Al-5Ti-1B master alloy)affect the grain size of magnesium alloys.Here,the influence of the addition of 0-1 wt.%of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy on the grain size of AZ91 magnesium alloy was investigated.Melting of the alloy was performed in steel and corundum crucibles.To study the effect of cooling rate on grain size,cylindrical samples were cast in steel and fireclay molds.The Al-5Ti-1B master alloy addition did not change the phase composition of the AZ91 alloy.This study demonstrates that the addition of Al-5Ti-1B did not contribute to the grain refinement of the AZ91 alloy,but rather led to its coarsening for samples cast in both the steel and fireclay molds.Increasing the holding time after the addition of the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy from 15 to 110 minutes also did not lead to significant grain coarsening.The mechanical properties of the AZ91 alloy samples slightly improved after Al-5Ti-1B addition. 展开更多

The oxidation behavior of a newly designed Co-Ni-based alloy with varied addition of Ti(1.4 and 2.1 wt.%,hereafterreferred as 1.4Ti and 2.1Ti alloys)was explored in air at 900℃.It is found that an outer oxide layer composed of CoO,anintermediate oxide layer composed of intermittent TiO,plus continuous Cr,W-rich oxides,and an inner oxidized regioncomposed of Al2O3 were formed on the surface of 1.4Ti alloy,whereas the oxide structure of 2.1Ti alloy was composed of Co0 as the outer oxide layer,continuous TiO2,Cr2O3 and WO3 as intermediate oxide layer,and Al2O3 as the inner oxidizedregion.With increasing Ti content.continuous TiO2 films formed in the intermediate oxide layer,which would lead to theformation of compact Cr2O3 and improved oxidation resistancc after 100 h oxidation at 900℃.These observations indicatedthat Ti addition can improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance of Co-Ni-based aloys. 展开更多

By use of self-consistent field Xα scattered-wave (SCF-Xα-SW) method, the electronic structure was calculated for four models of Ti4Al14X (X=Al, Fe, Ni and Cu) clusters. The Ti4Al14X cluster was developed based on L12 Al3Ti-base intermetallic compound. The results are presented using the density of states (DOS) and one-electron properties, such as relative binding tendency between the atom and the model cluster, and hybrid bonding tendency between the alloying element and the host atoms. By comparing the four models of Ti4Al14X cluster, the effect of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom on the physical properties of Al3Ti-based L12 intermetallic compounds is analyzed. The results indicate that the addition of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom intensifies the relative binding tendency between Ti atom and Ti4Al14X cluster. It was found that the Fermi level (EF) lies in a maximum in the DOS for Ti4Al14Al cluster; on the contrary, the EF comes near a minimum tn the DOS for Ti4Al14X (X=Fe, Ni and Cu) cluster. Thus the L12 crystal structure for binary Al3Ti alloy is unstable, and the addition of the Fe, Ni or Cu atom to Al3Ti is benefical to stabilize L12 crystal structure. The calculation also shows that the Fe, Ni or Cu atom strengthens the hybrid bonding tendency between the central atom and the host atoms for Ti4Al14X cluster and thereby may lead to the constriction of the lattice of Al3Ti-base intermetallic compounds. 展开更多

Effects of microalloying Ti and B on the microstructures and low temperature toughness of manual metal arc (MMA) deposits were investi- gated.Weld metals containing 200-300 ppm Ti and 29-60 ppm B deposited by manual coated elec- trodes provided an optimum low temperature toughness.The addition of B in weld metals low- ered the γ→α transformation temperature which promoted the acicular ferrite (AF) transformation. Solid solutioned B suppressed grain boundary ferrite as well as side plate ferrite formation and benefited the acicular ferrite formation.Titanium protected B from oxidizing as well as nitriding and formed Ti-Mn silicate inclusions.Ultra-high volt- age electron microscope analyses showed that TiO structure in the Ti-Mn silicate inclusions was the favorable nucleation site for acicular ferrite forma- tion. 展开更多

Hot strips of low carbon steels with Ti additive [-contain C 0.04 % -0. 07 % , Si≤0.6%, Mn≤0.6%, Ti 0. 060/00- 0.14% (mass percent)] prodvced by EAF-CSP (Electric Arc Furnaces-Compact Strip Production) process were examined by TEM, HREM and XRD. Carbonitrides with different N/C ratio were found in the sam- ples. The varying composition of the Ti-carbonitrides resulted from the supersaturation of Ti and temperature at which the compound was formed. In the tested steel, total mass fraction of the precipitates including cementite, carbonitride and a small quantity of Fe3O4, AO2O3 , Ti2 CS and A1N was about 0. 305 %. XRD results showed that about a quarter of the powder extracted by electrolysis was titanium nitrides, carbonitrides and carbides. Particle arrays formed by interphase precipitation could be observed either in slabs or in hot strips. The dominant reaction mecha- nisms were discussed. Compared with the conventional cold charge process, small amount of Ti addition would be more effective for orecipitation of fine orecioitates in the steels oroduced by CSP process. 展开更多

Al2O3 and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were brazed with Ag-Cu-Ti +B fillers in different brazing conditions. Effects of brazing temperature, holding time and additive Ti content on joints microstructure and shear strength were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and shear testing. Results indicate that TiCu and Ti(Cu,Al) decrease, but Ti2Cu and -Ti2(Cu,Al) increase in brazing seam with increasing brazing temperature, holding time and additive Ti content. Area consisting of Ti3(Cu,Al)30 and TiO near Al2O3 becomes gradually discontinuous from continuity when brazing temperature rises or holding time extends. As Ti additive content increases, TiO is absent near Al2O3, area consisting of only Ti3(Cu,Al)30 thickens. TiB whiskers are in situ synthesized by Ti and B atoms during brazing process. The brazing temperature, holding time and additive Ti content on joints microstructure influence the joints shear strength directly. The shear strength of joints, obtained at 850 ℃ holding for 10 min, reaches the maximum of 78 MPa. According to the experimental results, phase diagram and thermodynamics calculation, the interface evolution mechanism of the Al2O3/Ti-6Al-4V alloy joint was analyzed. 展开更多
